    One thing I love about Iceborne's themes for some of the returning monsters is that they add a part of the village theme of the game that that monster is from. So the part added to Glavenus' theme in Iceborne was a part of Bherna Village's theme

      It is really well made and a good nod to fans of the older titles, but it hinders the flow of the certain theme, wich makes the theme itself less impactfull in my opinion. The aggrasive design, and the portraits as the main monster of the game, makes a short action pact theme from Generations way more fitting for Glavenus in my Opinion. The more advantures and symphonic parts are really good executed, but they just dont fit an aggrassive, fire breathing and armored blade-tail-dinosaur!

      @@anigodzapex9384 I feel like this is intentional. Glavenus in Generations is envisioned as a brutal and threatening village destroyer
      In World Glavenus is already a well known monster and the hunter guild classified it as a regular brute wyvern with a blade
      It still is a very strong and dangerous monster, but it's better understood and not as scary to the people anymore
      But also the danger of Glavenus is better understood, so the brass delivers the same punch and tries to even amp it up a notch, while the little Bherna theme reminds of the history this monster had

    I really find this section 2:52 7:32 makes Glavenus' theme stand out(on both versions). It sounds so heroic and inspiring rather than threatening, it makes your heart swell with excitement and really gives Glavenus this feeling of being more of a rival hunter than a monster. That 'calm before the storm' is more like a moment of clarity in which in the middle of the fight both challengers suddenly realize that they're having fun and it becomes a contest that both could walk away from feeling like they've made a friend or at least met a kindred spirit rather than an enemy.
    Giving him a greatsword that he sharpens and focuses for a charged slash and spit that has a delayed explosion(barrel bombs) really makes it fairly clear he's meant to be more than a monster, a reflection of the player themselves.

      You have no idea how much I loved reading this comment because this is exactly what I feel when fighting Bazelgeuse when his heroic opera starts near the end of his theme, it sometimes even feels like he's your Partner in Hunting instead of an invading monster because that heroic music plays in the background while you and Bazelgeuse hunt down the monster on your Assigned Quest lol

    I agree that I think if I could fuse the higher intensity of the GU theme with the musical dynamism of the World theme it’d be the best Glav theme, even though I know the world version tries to make up for the lack of base it still feels too soft/not punchy and aggressive enough for Glavenus to me. I just wish the GU theme wasn’t so One-Note though.

    There are actually drums in the World version of the song, it's just that instead of the drumset of the Generations version, they used orchestral drums, which blend a lot better with the underlying strings and make it harder to pick them out.

    1:25 This is one of my main complaints about the recent MH osts, they got rid of the freaking drums. Monster Hunter music has always had a very iconic and intense percussion going on in the background. I've noticed that World and Rise have, for the most part, eliminated the "oomph" that Monster Hunter music used to have. While I DO like gen V's music in their own right, I still miss my funky boom boom drums, man

    • @GoldenLeafsMovies
      @GoldenLeafsMovies 2 дні тому

      Rise does contain some of that extra "oomph" (especially with Teostra) I think it has to do with the portable/older technology aspect. Most of the older games were made for portable machines so they needed the music to sound strong on the tiny speakers compared to modern TV's where music can be more subtle (it's why I think it's still around in Rise since it was made for the Switch which has tiny speakers).

    I'm actually surprised about your verdict because not only do I know the general consensus people have regarding the Glav Theme in World but I was also watching the tier list stream when you were ranking the Glav theme and remember how much you said you disliked it...
    That being said I share your opinion since I've generally liked both themes for different reasons, but I will say that the World Version lacks the energy and punch that the Generations Version had, I initially disliked the World Version when I first heard it but it has grown on me over time since, and now this video has given me a new found appreciation for it so there is that as well.

    My favorite part of the Glavenus theme is the one-bar trumpet(?) solo (2:52) right before the climax. The original version wins by default because the World version changed both its instrumentation and its rhythm (even if it's just splitting the first note into two, it makes the World version sound more stiff) (7:30).
    The Generations version also gets extra points for nostalgia because the climax of the theme usually lined up perfectly with my first mount (as an IG main), which added to the excitement and made it extremely memorable for me.

Most if not all of them have extra parts added here and there, and there are videos that compile the themes played each year. What easily sets the Generations version apart from the World version personally is the ingenious construct with the rate of progression. The Generations version literally behaves like the nature of a sword. Starts off dull, sharpens up, and strikes back at full power. Just like Glavenus when you're fighting it.
    This outstanding detail is what World completely left out on and it's honestly disappointing that they went for something more quieter and less dramatic with less of an impact compared to what the original greatly excelled at. But this is just my opinion.

  • @squiddler7731
    @squiddler7731 2 роки тому +1

    I think the big thing with the glavenus theme in world is the bit where the song hits it's peak. In generations like you said yourself, it's the best part of the theme, and when it peaks it really hits max energy and intensity. In world though you hit that same part of the theme, but this time it's immediately much more low-key and subdued, and when you think it's about to pick up in the next verse the energy drops even more.
    I never played iceborne, but I always wondered if that was an intentional choice due to the theme also being used for acidic glavenus. SInce that subspecies does kinda feel like a more low-key and precise version of glavenus (trading away the fire for something less flashy and favoring precise tail stabs over massive overhead swings)

    I’ve never really liked Iceborne’s version.
    It feels wrong in so many ways, most of which have to do with how little it fits glavenus as a monster.
    Orchestrals, light tones and undertones, and the appearance of Sad and Happier chords feels off and out of place.
    Glavenus is not only a flagship of generations but it is the final flagship, and when you do fight it, there’s no sense of worry from the villagers or sadness from anyone, it’s a triumphant moment, you’re here, finally this threat of the fated four can finally end!
    What Defines Glavenus is the drums and heavy beats that the Generations version has and the Iceborne version tends to lack, after all, those Drums and Heavy beats have a meaning that the orchestral parts of Iceborne’s theme just couldn’t possibly convey.
    Tension is high, but heroism is higher, this is a duel between two experts of their craft, glavenus the heavy bladed warrior, and the cunning, more illusive hunter.
    Generation’s version doesn’t hide that fact, Iceborne’s does… and like the chords it plays, it’s quite sad to see.
    Before people completely miss what I’m trying to say, let me explain it a little more… differently.
    The music in generation’s version complements the Embodiment of Barbaric combat that glavenus is, Iceborne’s version is way too preppy, and way too elegant for lack of better term, for glavenus.

    I highly recommend white fatalis (Including frontier), varusaburosu (nuclear diablos basically) and shantien (air god dragon thing) all from monster hunter. Shantien and varusaburosu are frontier. Also nightmare king grimm and sisters of battle (hollow knight)
    Also you were hoping for monster mix themes, check out "A" and "Dravonista" they have awesome mixes and medleys!

    while by no means bad or lesser, i think the World version is less fitting for the fight itself. a lot of the calmer segments you pointed makes it feel like you're in a sort of eye of the storm, per se - where the percussion is pretty much gone.
    in these games, i've always compared fights to a sort of dance between the monster and the hunter, where you have to think about where you're going to be positioned every step of the way, make sure you don't rush ahead, and make sure you don't get your toes stepped on. the monster's unique track typically represents the monster itself, in some way. their aesthetic and personality shines through.
    the quick changes of tone in the original version of the track do more than enough to paint a good image of glavenus' fight in my head. especially in world, he is a monster that makes you stay on your toes, always paying attention, with very short moments where he changes his stance, or he prepares a big attack, and you have to scramble to get out of the way as fast as possible, before he immediately continues his onslaught.
    but the new version's lack of percussion in some areas, to me, makes it feel like there is a long period during which you're safe to collect yourself, which doesn't match my view of the fight. instead of representing the monster itself, it feels more like it's showing a scenario - of which glavenus is the focus, certainly. but it feels like the theme is recontextualized, so to speak.
    i don't know if i'm making sense, hahah.

    I preffer the original version over the World iteration, all the already existing themes were butchered in World, some less than others but the fact is that all of them lost their punch rather than just gaining nuance and flavor with an orchestra, the Teostra them specially lost its drive, the point of the monster themes is to motivate you to stay in the fight and give it all, the same happened with the Nargacuga theme, is one of my grapes towards World, but it is still in my top 3 of MH games (with their respective expansions) and I started playing them from generation one.

    For now (haven’t watched yet), only talking on the title: a lot of world versions of themes lack some percussion, only to add it in during mounts. I think the only track I recognize as better than other versions (imo) are bazel’s.
    Post-view edit: Hm, maybe it isn’t lacking in percussion. But the music does change during a mount. Maybe I ought to boot up a world glavenus and see if this is the version I hear, or if it has the percussion or other aspect dialed back. Playing music for the sole act of listening to it will be different than playing music to respond to some sort of interactivity, and if this is the ost, I can’t imagine why they’d hold back from the “complete version.”

    • @jessecarlsheppard536
      @jessecarlsheppard536 2 роки тому

      I’ve seen discussions where people were generally disappointed in world’s music as a whole, but then when it occurred to them that the music changes during the mount, they actually liked the mount version better, and especially wished the basic music was just that (especially since they usually didn’t mount monsters much anyway).
      As someone who feels like gaming has a unique niche where music can change based on a context, influenced by the player, I appreciate the attempt. After playing world/iceborne for over 3,000 hours, I’m not sure I consider a mount to be the best criteria to amp up the music… but they experimented, and it wasn’t necessarily received in an ideal way. They didn’t ruin the tracks by any means, but when it’s a returning theme, and people notice it being held back, I can understand the letdown. And there’s only so much you can add to a track without being overbearing.

    My first time fighting Glavenus was in Iceborne, it was my first time hearing "The Scorching Blade", and when it got to the epic part I knew right then and there that he was destined to be my favourite rival monster.
    My first battle with him, I was pretty nervous since I had no clue about Glavenus' moves and attacks, so the beginning parts were perfectly emulating my initial concerns.
    Then came the calm part, and I had witnessed almost all of his attacks. I started to get some hints of how to properly deal with this guy.
    Then came the epic part, and it felt like yin and yang, especially as my hammer clashed with and broke his tailblade. Right then and there, Glavenus was cemented as my favourite monster in the entire series.
    I gave the original version a listen, and I will say that it ain't bad. The overall tone feels like a fight for survival. But the Iceborne version feels like a heroically emotional clash between mortal rivals, and that's why I love it more.

    Have you played the first 3 tomb raider games? They are a goldmine for music with a "classical" aspect to it. My favorite is venice violins from tomb raider 2, theres a cover from Oliver Moya Bueno that is just amazing.
    I would love to donate to you to review some classic tomb raider songs, the compositor Natan McCree is a genius. Unfortunately Im struggling economically. However the classic tomb raider fandom is EXTREMELY passionate to this day, it is the most passion ive ever seen from a fandom. If you make a tomb raider classic related video surely a lot of newcomers will appear and maybe some will donate for more tomb raider reviews
