I've been a paint by number enthusiast for decades. There was a crisis in recent years by an influx of unethical companies stealing both established producers sets and artists work to produce inferior products for a very cheap price. It was so bad it actually ran one of the best producers out of the business (Plaid). Be very careful where you get your sets from. Legitimate producers get permission and reimburse artists for their work.. if you see duplicate sets to others or licensed characters it is a big red flag. Another red flag are brands who show an image of the original art instead of an image of the completed kit. The best in the business at this time are Simplicity (paintworks) from the US and Schipper from Germany. You can buy directly from them or go through a reputable distributor (herrschners.com is one of the best in the US, they will only sell legitimate sets). I do not suggest Royal and Langnickel, while they are legitimate their quality is terrible. This is one case where you generally get what you pay for, it costs money to not only pay for the rights to the image but to create and test the patterns, as well as produce quality paint. A good paint set will have very light numbers and lines so you can cover them easily, unlike the issues you saw with your canvas. They also have high quality matte paint with a smooth finish and good opacity, and plenty of it with the ability to get more if there is the rare problem such as a dried out pot or shipping incident. A large set can take many hours to complete so it's worthwhile to get a good one, by the time I'm finished with one it looks like a traditional painting. It's a great hobby if you like intricate work. I know many tips and techniques so feel free to ask if you like.

It was a niche hobby for many years and the loss of one of the best was heartbreaking (among other artists they partnered with Thomas Kincade and his sets were just jawdropping). I noticed below you had mentioned this set being too detailed.. I would suggest looking at some of the basic beginner sets from Simplicity, while much less detailed they have exactly the same quality as the large ones and many are really cute. Once completed you can use blending/mixing/detailing techniques to jump them to the next level if you wish. I didn't even know paint by number on canvas was a thing, but it totally makes sense! I don't know about you, but I DID get into coloring books for a while. Bought a book with a bunch of nature and animal-themed art, got a few handful of Touch markers in every color of the rainbow, and just went to town. It's nice to not have to worry about the creative process, turn your brain off and just color some neat-looking line art. Let us know how it went!

Thanks! I'll have to think if I want to get different paints to make sure I don't run out, because I don't want to put in many hours and then have to repaint it all because I can't find a matching color XD
i used to do paint by numbers as a kid and always found it disappointing. they sets often came with a bad brush, worse than the ones here and they would always come with the wrong colours and they were also small pots. And on top of that they were also really detailed but still marketed ad kids. This looks interesting might have to have another go!
This set is definitely an improvement over the sets from 20-30 years ago. I just wish I has a less detailed one, lol. Too many details is not good for my attention span
We just had a late Christmas delivery which was an awesome surprise. Hubbs got us a paint by number of Emie and Bear to paint together (so much black hahah).
this video reminds me that I had one set of painting by number from a long time ago.. I might give it a try ^^ your video also reminds me of watercolor coloring book, seen them on online store, but never bought one... (fifiolin)

You shouldn’t have to budget in for additional paint. I’ve done many diff PBN from different vendors and have never ran out of paint! 👍🏼👍🏼
