    Hey Chris, this is a really great, inspirational video for many wannabe cruisers. I did what you did - bought dirt cheap, but I did a restoration on my 50'MY and spent about $40,000 in total, and it can easily bring me quite a bit more than I paid because you are right, you make the money on the purchase, not the sale at the end. That said, from experience, 95% of new buyers will never be able to match what you did simply because they won't have the knowledge or experience to avoid all the costs you avoided. They can purchase the boat, and yes, 30% is not that difficult to knock off most boat purchases, especially if you pay cash and buy "as is." But all the costs you didn't pay, like: hauling out, survey, the refit and repairs, etc., maintenance over time, etc. will have to be paid because they won't be able to overhaul an engine, or do even a fraction of the things you can mechanically do. Still, this was a very informative video, and well appreciated, but new buyers need to be aware of their actual costs.

    Chris. Great, helpful videos. Thank you. So please take this the right way. I have a 32 footer on the South Coast. In my experience you have underestimated real world boat ownership costs by a factor of 10. Readers should understand your experience is at the edges of what is possible and will not be achievable by 80% of people.

    Excellent info! I was watching you guys for a few years, but then UA-cam decided to not show me your new videos anymore and I lost contact. Just watched this one, didn’t know you had sold your boat and purchased a new one. I’ve been in Aircraft Sales all my life, 45+ years in the business, I’ve also bought & sold boats and other assets for customers of mine. Everything you say is 100% on point. It’s very easy to spend a ton of money on a boat, RV or airplane, and then lose a ton of money a few years later when you sell it. It’s way more challenging, and also way more satisfying, to buy at a price that protects one’s investment when it come to selling it in the future. And of course doing as much of the work yourself can add a ton of sweat equity into your investment. I’ll be getting on your mailing list, and wish you three all the very best going forward, cheers ⛵️👍🏻😁
    PS: Very cool to hear that your DIY anti-fouling was a success, I remember watching the video when you put that on, always wondered how that turned out. Are you going to be selling the recipe? ... 😁🙏🏻

    First of all id like to say a massive than you for the time and effort you have put into producing this ...I was going to say gold but rather diamond mine of informtion. I am in a serios position of thinking zbout taking the first steps into boat ownership...this has answered more questions during the duration of the video than months of trying to find answers. as a fellow Brit...thank you. yes I would love to hear about cheap mooring fees especially if it is for the UK...where I am on the south coast, most marinas want £4k plus for a 38 foot boat per year. I also want to liveaboard...some marinas dont like this. I have looked at all sorts...marinas to swing moorings...nothing seems reasonable.
    do you have a website I can make contact on for further private conversations?

    I'm a new subscriber. I am 66 years old. I grew up near the ocean in San Pedro & San Diego, CA, USA. I crewed a great deal in my youth but never owned a boat myself and did almost only racing. However, as part of the crew, I sailed the open ocean to Catalina Island and back numerous times. I decided to purchase an inexpensive boat about a year ago (Catalina 27 up to a Catalina 32 size and price range as they are still very popular in California and many are fixer-uppers.). I have run into two big problems: 1.) The cost of a slip is crazy in the marinas near me (San Diego) and most will not let you work on your boat in the slip. 2.) There appears to be no alternative to "1" other than putting the boat On The Hard, but the same issue of cost is there. So, in other words, boats can be found and purchased in the price range of $2,500-$6,500.00 US Dollars very easily at the size and type I am looking for. But, there seems to be no way to own them or work on them where I live. How does someone own in Southern California without paying the price of the boat two or three times each year just in slip costs? A trailer-able boat size is too small for what I want to do.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  8 місяців тому

      I'm afraid the only easy answer I can think of is for you to 'vote with your feet' and buy a boat somewhere more affordable and less restrictive. Or buy a bargain boat which is in good condition (they do exist) and sail her South soon afterwards... Best regards, Chris 👍

    Great advice Chris, best one is - you only make money on the purchase price of the boat, very true. I bought my boat for -38% of asking price as the owner had just bought a bigger boat and had 2 in marina, in 3 wks time the next 12 months marina fee's were due for old boat.

    Thanks for the video Chris, Yes a video about mooring, anchoring, marinas would be appreciated, as you’re aware the UK is normally expensive in Marinas. How do prices compare to Italy for a 10m yacht?
    It would be useful if you could also cover looking forwards and your strategy to FT cruise in Europe in 2021 onwards. Knowing that UK citizens will then only be able to stay a maximum of 3 months in the Schengen Area and must then leave for an equal period to reset the clock. Assuming you are not already an Italian citizen, are you planning to cruise the mid and eastern med then head to a non Schengen country? It would be an interesting topic to cover and provoke discussion and would be applicable to North Americans too. Cheers John

      Hi John, the mooring cost video is online as of today and it covers the cost in And around La Spezia. As for the second question I would like to reply with a quote, which is even more relevant today than it was when you wrote your comment: “When freedom is outlawed only outlaws will be free.” There are always ways around things, and at a certain point in time we must be prepared to stand up for our God given rights: if not for our sake, then for the sake of our children. I hope you understand what I mean by reading between the lines. These are extraordinary times we are living in. Chris

    Hi Chris,
    I've been a small Patreon of your channel for some time now and really appreciate the time and effort you take to explain your boat projects and show us your adventure. I liked this vblog and it was eyeopening that your boat costs came out so low. Obviously mooring/marina fees were not included but I assume you're comparing this from the point of view of a live-a-board cruiser and if they were not on a boat they'd have rent/mortgage costs anyway.
    As you mention, it takes a very long time to make your videos so you can't cover every angle however I think you could have taken a slightly different approach. You quite rightly state at the start that you know your way around a tool box and that you have a lot of boat trading experience. This puts you very much at one end of the cruiser boat owning spectrum and not very realistic for the vast majority.
    The other end of the spectrum is someone who may only buy one boats in their life and are not at all DIY minded. Costing their likely outlay over the 4.5 years of owning that yacht might give show how great a job you did. Also having someone in the middle who wants to service their engine but not tackle any complicated jobs might give a good idea for the average cruiser?
    Please don't take this as a criticism, I just wanted to share my thoughts on what was, as always, a very interesting watch.
    Thanks
    Dean

    Hi Chris, you always have such a nice spin and lots of useful advice on everything and I totally agree, you don't need the most fancy boat equipment.
    I'm curious what more you have to say about the sales paperwork, other than the obvious bill-of-sale, e.g. what about the critical proof of VAT paid -- which authorities may ask you to present. My plan is to buy a used boat in EU, but without previous boat buying experience, what documents should I absolutely minimum require from the boat dealer? Proof of ownership? Sellers liabilities where the boat may be a security until all payments done?
    VAT is an interesting subject now with Brexit, if it would require an costly UK import to EU, and thus possible may cause lot's of custom/tax problems?.
    E.g. a used boat which is register in UK by a British owner, but the boat is located and moored say in Italy - is this VAT considered as paid, or will this be an import issue to Europe, if an EU citizen purchase this boat. I.e. do you have to pay 22% VAT again in Italy due to boat registration/owner ship?
    Can we expect, because of this, that used boats in UK will become a UK-market only thing due to Brexit -- maybe this was the idea with Brexit ;-)
    If you have the time, but this is absolutely not required - I'm just curious - what you would come up with in an episode on mooring costs.
    This episode was kind of an eyeopener episode. My questions may be "food for thoughts" in some coming episodes from you. Cheers

    Where you need pure sinewave inverter is when using inductive load, like power tools or kitchen appliances with motors. It might work for a while but don't be surprise if smoke is coming out of it. I like this video, it is useful information. Unfortunately, I'm shopping for a catamaran and they are very popular and there no deal on them. Monohull is where the deals are.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  4 роки тому

      I have run power tools for years from cheap inverters (angle grinders, drills, vacuum cleaners etc.) with no problem so it can definitely be done, despite what higher ticket inverter manufacturers (or purchasers) will have you believe.
      Car, house, monohull, catamaran it doesn’t matter: there is always a deal to be done if you know how to negotiate. Of course if you enter into a negotiation believing there is “no deal to be done” you sabatage any chance of getting one and this becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. Cheers, Chris

    Hi Chris, great video! I say this with the experience of a life on a boat, including the last 10 years spent annually at least 1/3 on board. I confirm that what you claim is certainly possible, but it is not within everyone's reach ... Do not underestimate the fact that your competence is not common and is worth all your savings and much more ... Having said that I would like to add that mine experience has been very positive in the countries of northern Europe (in particular NL and UK) where the nautical culture and respect for boats is much more developed. To conclude, the saying is absolutely true: "whoever buys well will sell well", in all fields and certainly in the nautical sector. Your valuable advice may be useful to many newbies who intend to start a life experience on a boat. Greetings to the whole family.

      Thank you Mauro, I agree with you. However, it is always possible for someone to get stuck in and start learning new skills, rather than always relying on others to do work. The first time I removed an engine from a car when I was a teenager I wasn't 100% certain that I could finish the job unaided. I believed I could do it so I went ahead and tried. I did get the job finished, and the next time I had to do this [buying old cars has the upside of teaching you maintenance skills at the cost of some oily weekends and evenings lying on the ground fixing things!] I knew I could do it.
      What I mean is we all have to start somewhere. The boat owner who pays someone to do oil & filter changes is turning down the opportunity to start their journey towards being able to maintain & repair their own engine. This boat owner may earn more in his/her day job than the person they pay to do the oil change, so from a purely financial stance it is absolutely logical to sub-contract this work. But if they instead choose to learn something new and do this work themselves, then that skill will stay with them for life and also sets them on the path towards self-sufficiency.
      We are always striving for freedom in life. We like to be self-reliant and I like to think that if someone dropped us off in a wilderness somewhere, they could come back to find us 10 years down the line and we'd be happy as Larry (if a bit dishevelled looking!) We hope we can encourage other people to get stuck in and do more of their own boat work, because as well as saving money it also gives you an understanding of your boat and therefore equips you to deal with whatever emergency might crop up at sea - when help may not be available and the buck stops with you.
      We send you and your family our best wishes and hope that wherever you are you have the freedom of the sea before you!
      Un abraccio,
      Chris, Rossella ed Emma :-)

      @@SailingBritaly Dear friends, thank you for the long and detailed reply. I appreciate it and I totally agree with you. The vast majority of sailors (not occasional) that I have met and known have the same aptitudes as us. Only in this way can you live free at sea on a boat (or have a lot of money, but then you are not free ...). Over the years, however, I have realized that our philosophy of life on board is not practicable by everyone, often and trivially as many discover they have two left hands (I don't know if it can be said in English ...) and give up: sometimes wisely. Having also practiced in very theoretical fields, I can confirm that what you say is also reflected in these contexts. What unites the whole is the will and the curiosity to travel unknown roads that then light up day after day giving us freedom, which for me is synonymous with happiness. A dear greeting from a happy old sailor.

    Hi Chris, yes to savings on a mooring and marina costs video.
    I think one of the most important things in keeping costs down as you are doing is tracking how money is being spent and the running total.
    On the subject of the survey, if you have a mechanical/electrical background and you know your way around a yacht I think its perfectly acceptable to do your own survey. After all, most people would quiet cheerfully spent £15,000 on a second-hand car without a survey. I think to a degree we have been convinced by the marine industry into thinking they are necessary.
    Now if I was spending £100,000 on a yacht or a car would I purchase without a survey...Umm.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  4 роки тому

    The biggest cost for most of us is mooring/marinas/parking. The supposition, still today is that if you own a boat you must be rich. I have an 18' trailer sailer which I keep at a sailing club on an inland lake, this costs me nearly £800 per year and £150 for insurance. Incredible when you think the whole boat only cost less than £3K. ps I just ordered the Nigel Calder book. Have got solar panels, an electric motor to install and an outboard to rebuild. Can't wait to get to Greece and acquire a real yacht, trouble is, my wife won't go near a sailing boat so will have to buy an apartment first (which means a very cheap boat for me) Thanks for the vids, very informative.

    • @SailingBritaly
      @SailingBritaly  3 роки тому

      Hi Stephen,
      thank you for your comment.
      This is true for most boats - mooring fees are often the biggest expense (excluding extensive refits, but even in this case the costs of mooring will supercede these costs over future years). I must admit If I had a trailer sailer in the UK I might be tempted to find a farmers field near a boat ramp somewhere, but of course that adds a whole extra set of complication regarding tide times etc. so in the end inland waters may make more sense so that time available for sailing is maximised.
      You can't go wrong with any of Nigel Calder's books, they are gold mines for boat owners.
      Good luck for your future boating plans and have a look at my boat buying course before you start your search as I believe the investment in this would pay for itself many times over, even on a relatively cheap boat purchase. In the meantime enjoy your current boat: the smaller they are, the more fun you have!
      Cheers and God bless,
      Chris

    Yes Chris, please make a video about HMRC personal income taxes for liveaboard Brits - i.e. what happens if you live/travel/work on your boat for 183+ days in a tax year? I haven't seen anyone do a video about that. UK has some interesting laws for crew working on ships/mega-yachts, but I'm sure that can also apply to people who work from their laptop on their online business or UA-cam channel, while "liveaboarding" on their own vessel.
