  • Finally! It's time for Lord of the Rings and an exploration of Tolkien's beautiful map of Middle Earth. Initially I thought this would be an easy video to prepare - just rewatch some beautiful fantasy movies, right? - but instead this turned into the biggest mess of open wiki tabs I've had so far 😅 The amount of info and detail and history for this world is just staggering, and I feel like I've barely managed a little glimpse of it all.
    Deutsche Version folgt am Wochenende!
The beautiful map is from Aguirreart on Etsy:

And a video on Tolkien's map that I found very interesting is this one here by Mapster:

Yeah because it's also educational. It's definitely one of the best and well produced, too. Someone is behind the camera, which you don't see a whole lot of (Moonlight Cottage sometimes does that, I think). There's also not a ton of fancy props or set design. Simple, too the point relaxation and you can learn something other than skincare information.

The one map to rule them all. I know how much there is to unpack when just describing the map. This was impeccably done. You reduced major concepts into bite sized, easily digestible pieces. It really puts into perspective the effort you must put in to all of the rest of the videos.

@@MelangeASMR You did very well. It is an enormous topic considering Tolkien wrote historical fiction that for me incorporates his own views on numerous aspects of how he understood prehistory. He was a multiple linguist who researched deeply into many mythologies. I think a large part of why he wrote his works as fiction is due to his own awareness of the suppression surrounding prehistory. By doing so he brought prehistory into the minds of the masses without them having to consider whether it was true or not - it is just a story is all the had to consider. And they flocked to the movies and read his books profusely as a result primarily because the fictional stories catalysed the ancestral memory within them. So whilst there may be embellishments in his stories they seem to me to strongly contain numerous aspects of prehistory that otherwise suppression prevented being told via non fiction. Others have tried similar but Tolkien applies this historical fiction expertly. Your integration of his stories in your ASMR map of Middle Earth expose is superb and really helps bring to life Tolkien's stories that explore into the roots of humanity. Very well done.

I think you said once that you were a big fan of Rotting Christ? Knowing only your ASMR presenter personality, I could not imagine that same voice screaming along to those vocals at a concert. I guess the general vibe of ASMR just makes it surprising, even to someone who should not find it so. The episode I was waiting for! Amazing and very relaxing to watch. You were worried that you'd get something wrong but there's only one thing I can nitpick ;) Quenya and Sindarin weren't divided geographically, like you said that one was spoken in Mirkwood and the other one in Rivendell. Instead, Quenya was an older language, used in Valinor before the elves arrived at Middle Earth, while Sindarin is a more modern language developed in the First Age in Beleriand. Sindarin is the most common and widespread elven language, while Quenya is usually used in more official or even ceremonial manner - something like Latin in our world. But other than that, you got all the information right, you can be proud of yourself :) Definitely one of my favourite videos on your channel.

They were fantastic. They're also responsible for the fact that I would trek several hundred miles out of my way rather than ever take a shortcut through an abandoned mine, and the fact that I know wanting something so badly that I feel like I couldn't live without it is probably a really^10 bad sign and I should pay attention to it ASAP. 😂

I love that you did your research into the history of Middle Earth. It's clear that you at the very least looked some stuff up, if not actually read some the deeper lore beyond the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. The part that stood out to me was actually the part when you first start talking about the Shire. When you said that "This is the where the story starts for most of us." For some reason that stuck out to me, I think because if you asked me where the story of Middle Earth starts, I probably wouldn't say in The Shire. I'd probably say with the Ainulindalë. I know that answer that probably doesn't make any sense to normal people who don't read fictional history books for fun, but it's where the story begins in my mind. In the Timeless Void with Illuvatar, then the creation of the Ainur with the Flame Imperishable, and then the creation of Eä (the universe) and Arda (the world) through the Music of the Ainur. And the Discord of Melkor. Can't forget about that part.
Why I felt the need to type that all out at 1:45 in the morning? Good question. I don't need sleep. I need Lord of the Rings maps and lore, and to explain the creation of Middle Earth to people who didn't ask in a comment that started out as me just saying that I appreciated the effort put into this video. Sleep is for the weak! I need more LoTR stuff!

It was a pleasurable experience listening to you speak on an aspect from LOTR books.
I am not really an avid fan and know very little about LOTR except that it was a trilogy movie some years gone. Nevertheless your voice tone, level, and pace makes whatever you speak on in your ASMR videos quite soothing to my ears and mind.

Indeed Tolkien first created languages, but then he understood that languages can become alive in myths. So he stared to create mythes which can tell the story of his worlds with the help of created languages. Magical imagination and a huge work done
