Vanos gears, it's common on all M62Tu motors. It doesn't affect functionality just an annoying sound.

The S62 engine with the manual tranny is the swap people make.

Only prefacelift ones had v8 manuals, at least here in Eu market. Not sure if its with m60 or m62 (non vanos) tho. But personally i believe that auto suits this large limousine better.
