I own 5 of these trucks (Mad Force/USA1) with two being electric. I've owned my Mad Force Nitro for almost 5 years. Some things to note:
1-There are no and has never been any documented factory clutch settings for the shift points. Both of my nitro USA1's are still brand new and I guess I could document the settings before I do the breakin which won't be for awhile.
2-The clutch settings of one individual may not work for another because engine tune affects how the trans shifts based on RPM. Doesn't hurt to try but that should be kept in mind. I like to run lean and mean so my engines scream a bit more.
3-The trans gearing on these trucks is a rather close ratio and sometimes the 2nd to 3rd gear shift can easily be missed! Meaning, you don't hear it.
3-Yes, my Savage XL trans needs to be removed in order to adjust the 2nd gear shift point. The 3rd gear shift point can be done via the access hole in the trans case.
The best advice I can give is to disable the 3rd gear and concentrate on adjusting the 1st to 2nd gear. You can disable the 3rd gear by cranking the shift screw all the way down so the engine has to scream in RPMS to shift or, as in the case of my Savage, turn the clutch backwards. When 1st to 2nd is to your liking, move on the adjusting the 2nd to 3rd. These trans are very easy to adjust. You can leave the 2nd gear adjustment screw pretty loose, like 2 turns in from flush and it should shift pretty early then tune it in to your liking.
Remember, the engine should be fully heat saturated before making adjustments. If you adjust the clutches before the engine is fully heat soaked, your shifting will change as the engine gets hotter.
I may make a video of my experiences with this platform as it seems to be lacking any real information. For example, Hybrid is upset about the clutch bell needle bearings, I'm still on my ORIGINAL ones, you gotta lube them with bearing oil and spin the clutch bell every once in awhile when it sits. People are scared of doing that because they think the oil will get on everything/clutches. A little oil goes a long way, dry the excess. This platform has been around since about 2001! It's old but SOLID. I will never get rid of mine. That box is a keeper too!

Thank you so much for the help and insight! I did try locking the 3rd gear before but still wasn't hearing the 1-2 shift, even if I accelerated slowly. I will give it another try today though, I'm about to go hit the road and see how this performs after the rebuild.
The new 3-speed cam I ordered for the pin had it's grub set at 3 turns counterclockwise from being fully bottomed out. I'm hopeful that might be the factory settings, so going to try 3 turns out for 1-2 cam and 2 turns out for 2-3 cam. I'll be sure to post an update video!
Thanks again for all the advice!

@@TurokRC Worse case, just be aggressive with the 2nd gear and leave it far out from the bottom. These adjustments are like nitro engine tuning and a little goes a long way. I'd rather have it shift early and go from there as it's easier for me to adjust. Remember, let the engine get nice and hot, that should be about 75% of the tank but you need to actually run the truck, just don't let it idle. Best of luck and I hope you report back when it's working. Hearing these things shift through all 3 gears is so addictive!

Hi Turok. Great and interesting video. I have some good and interesting info for you about the USA-1 3-speed transmission. I see the problem and why. The design inside is almost exactly the same as the Traxxas Jato 2-speed transmission but with one design flaw difference compare to the Jato. I just took a look inside the original gear of my Traxxas Jato. Compare to the Kyosho gears the Traxxas gear dont use any plastic to cover the pins and that is why the Kyoshos gears causing problem. They are depend on that plastic is there to cover the pins because the pins are not close enough to do the hooking job by them self. Kyosho should have design it so the pins do the hooking directly by have the pins just a little futher back so those clutch Shoes/hooks can hook on the pins just like Traxxas 2-speed gear. I have had no problems at all with my 2-speed transmission. It have never break apart. Kyosho has done this bad design on purpose to make money on spare parts gear or they have bad designer who should get fired. The only solution as I see it is, either buy metal gears for the USA-1 or that Kyosho redesign the original gears. Hope this info was of help to you or anybody.

Oh that weird sprocket you thought was a tool, is probably the lower chain sprocket. Now all three of my gears are missing teeth. 2 and 2.5 turns would not allow shifting either. 4 seems to work but things were inconsistent. Ugh.

Not sure I can be any help but I own a kyosho gt 2 and its known for having 2nd gear stripping. The new parts you shown share the same for my car which was ig109b. The letter b just means that kyosho revised the material to be thicker. It did somewhat solve my issue, but see my 2nd gear chipping off. So my sense is that its the manufacturer fault from the gecko. Did kyosho even check their quality control before releasing this dam thing? What's the dam rush kyosho!!

Irregardless of your grub screw settings, your gears will continue to fail. It's a design flaw Kyosho worked out on their GT2 platform. The revised dual shoe clutch type transmission of the race spec GT2 eliminated the failing gear cam strike plate on the inside of the gear as you experienced. In addition, the roller bearing was also eliminated from the initial transmission design they had in the GT1., which is the same one you have in your truck. It's shocking to see this 20+ year old transmission in a "New" truck. I thought they would have put the upgraded GT2 transmission in there. I had this same 2 speed transmission in a electric HPI RS4mt in 1998. When I upgraded the motor to a high power modified I noticed the gear cam strike plate began getting worn. The exact same thing happened in my Kyosho GT2. When I upgraded the engine, the cam gear strike plate started failing much faster. I then upgraded to steel gears, which fixed the problem., until I upgraded my transmission to have the 2 shoe clutch type.
I think the problem is exaggerated because of the large tires as well. It seems as thought the truck needs a slipper clutch where the chain drive is, to save the gears., but that's just my 2cents.

I posted an updated video with it working, strangely I've now been using the same gears for about 10 tanks and it's been shifting beautifully through all gears. I believe I had a bad batch of roller bearings/ 2-3 speed cams. I've now replaced both 2&3 speed cams, both needle bearings, as well as a few stripped gears. I've got a set of metal gears on the way and will post a video of the install when it arrives.
