  • Part 1 of our brand-new video series offers you an introduction to the world of Digital Sound for model railways. In this new four part series, we will explore what digital sound has to offer and how to install and use decoders from Hornby, ZIMO and ESU.
This brand new four-part video series features:
PART ONE: Digital Sound Introduction - FREE to view on UA-cam and keymodelworld.com
In part one Mike Wild and Jonathan Newton talk through the basics of digital sound as well as demonstrating factory sound fitted locomotives, exploring their functions and how they can be controlled using a digital handset.
PART TWO: Hornby Triplex Sound - FREE to view on keymodelworld.com with a free member account
In part two we start our trilogy of sound installation features by working with the new Hornby Bluetooth Triplex Sound chips. During part two we show how to add an 8-pin chip to a Hornby Class 60, a 21-pin chip to the LMS 'Turbomotive' and a Next18 chip to a TT:120 scale 'A4' 4-6-2 taking you through every step of the journey including sound uploads.
PART THREE: ZIMO digital sound - Available exclusive on keymodelworld.com with a Premium Subscription
In the third part of our series we move to look at the ZIMO sound decoder family and their capabilities as we install a PLUX22 decoder in a Bachmann Class 40 with factory speakers and then show how a 21-pin decoder, an upgrade speaker and basis stay alive can be added to the Hornby BR '9F' 2-10-0.
PART FOUR: ESU digital sound - Available exclusive on keymodelworld.com with a Premium Subscription
In the fourth and final part of our series, the ESU LokSound sound decoder family gets our focus as we show how to install a Next18 decoder in a Bachmann narrow gauge locomotive, a Locoman Sounds ESU chip in a Bachmann BR '5MT' 4-6-0 and a Class 68 sound profile in the Dapol model.
A Premium Subscription to Key Model World starts from £3.99 a month and includes full access to all previous video series, exclusive layout tour videos, more than 6,000 modelling articles, back issues to 2015 and - new for 2024 - discounted travel on Railway Touring Company main line steam tours.

Cheers for this, if not covered later on would you consider looking at the DCC operation of signals, points lights etc 👍

That won't be covered here in Series #1 however we are planning Series #2 where we will definitely go into those kind of details 😊

If this is intended for a complete beginner to DCC and sound, I think you should illustrate the talk with examples of the items you are discussing and diagrammes of how they connect together. A picture is worth a thousand words.

@@j3xk72r9 Diagrams are not easy for everyone to understand. Part 1 is intended as an introduction, not an installation guide. Part 2 shows in detail how to fit the Hornby TXS decoder to a model and get it connected. It is all done on video with multi-cameras so you can see everything in detail. If you're after a diagram yourself, there are probably many that can be found on Google, however we have aimed to keep this as simple for people to understand and follow as possible 😊

Can a dcc model train still run on older dc power system just to run it without the sound/light effects?

Blimey you were going at 100mph. DCC is a massive learning curve for someone brought up on DC. Ive been digital for 13 years. Still learning after many blown decoders etc. Nearly all DCC ready locos require body or tender off jobs and careful alignment of decoders. If you have poor eyes/shakey hands you better fork out for fitment by someone else. Just a simple demo of how to fit a decoder and running against a dc loco would have sufficed. Easy to drop into the technical stuff when you are way past the preliminary stage. Dont get me wrong I love DCC but went thru alot of perseverance to get where I am now. Just slow down for the novice please.

Hi there. Part 1 was an introduction without installation. Parts 2, 3 and 4 are where we go into slow detail of how to fit the chips, speakers and stay alives. Make sure you subscribe to Key Model World to watch the next 3 parts to learn it all in full detail 😊

Hope your going to cover the the locos that are being sold as sound locos for top money but have a very poor sound quality, due to the lack of speaker space. I'm sure you know which these are. I've bought a few and have been very disappointed. These are being sold as factory sound fitted. What a rip-off.

They will never do that. Remember the manufacturers and advertisers own them.
