  • Mike's had another 'good idea' and the Hornby Magazine team are building a new narrow gauge model railway. Join Mike Wild and Richard Watson as they embark on the 'quick' project to model a Ffestiniog theme narrow gauge layout inspired by the arrival of Bachmann's first ever ready-to-run 'OO9' Double Fairlie 0-4-4-0T in just 8ft x 2ft 6in.

Another great video - the two of you work very well together in the videos and it comes across as relaxed and friendly. It was useful to see Mike's techniques for the build, and I can begin to see the attraction of the Fairlie - having initially dismissed it because it is narrow gauge. Richard's video of the real locomotive was really enjoyable too - some wonderful steam sounds in there. I'm looking forward to the second part. And, as with a number of others, I'd like to thank the Hornby Magazine crew for another superb year of magazine articles and reviews, not to mention the videos too. Have a happy Christmas and New Year.

Great work Mike and Richard. A really useful video encouraging modellers to make the break into narra gauge, If I can be constructively critical for a moment, and having been brought up in Corris as a child, Welsh narrow gauge railways are very much not flat on an a piece of ply or MDF. I suspect Mike started off with the flat boards as a very quick start to the project, but it would probably have been more appropriate to design the depth under the trackbed / formation prior to decking the boards. This is primarily because the typical Welsh narrow gauge lines tend to climb hills and mountains with embankments and bridges under the track as much as cuttings above.
Having said that, a really nice job and you should be really pleased. The sky appears to be the limit for RTR 009 at the moment, and although the Beyer Garretts are large and complex machines, I really wouldn't be surprised to see an RTR product in the next couple of years. The Festiniog Fairlie will pave the way for many more products I am sure.

I'm building an N gauge 1960s layout. I don't have that much space, so its only 8 x 2.5 ft. But when I saw Bachmann's Autumn release video, I HAD to have one of these double Fairlies *breathes in and out of brown paper bag*. Still not got much room, so I have got a 2x2 ft board and I'm going to see if I can make a tiny little first radius model. Mike mentioned he has something similar. I've got my inspiration from Peco's Your Guide to Narrow Gauge Railways. Fantastic to see you do a video on this.

I never liked the Double Fairlie's, but then my father never liked firing them back in the 60's. His favourite was Blanche, and then Prince (as a kid I had my first footplate rides on them). When Bachmann produce models of them I will be among the first to get them (and Prince should be in green as he was in the 60's).

I have a small OO9 track as part of my OO layout and I have to agree with Mike about the tight radii. I ended up using set track on the tightest parts as I was afraid of bending the flexitrack that much and causing the problems he describes. Great video,

Can you make your content inclusive and accessible by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning? it is sadly very hard to watch relying only on the auto captioning (Im Profoundly Deaf)
