Airbnb's Joe Gebbia: The Intersection of Art & Business | Chase Jarvis LIVE

  • Joe Gebbia is best known as the co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Airbnb, a company you’ve probably heard about once or twice - valued at $31 billion at the moment (yep - that’s billion with a B). But this isn’t his first rodeo - he’s been a passionate advocate of design and an entrepreneur since his childhood, channeling that passion into everything from his college side hustle of selling his specially seat cushions for the uncomfortable stools in his art classes to various earlier online businesses, designing a furniture line called Neighborhood, and his current project, Samara, Airbnb's internal design studio.
It wasn’t easy putting this episode together - as you can imagine Joe is a busy guy - but I am so, so glad we did because this one is FIRE - his career is basically one big proof point of all the things we talk about on this show. But the one thing that I think Joe really embodies is the idea that stamina wins. That so many of his successes have come from simply persisting when others would have given up - from literally refusing to take no for an answer and just grinding until it happens. I know you’ve heard this so many times, but there is a reason why: it’s the damn truth! And if you weren’t a believer before today, I think you will be after listening to this.
    Enjoy!

Wow, just WOW. I've watched most if not all of your interviews here, Chase, and this one is officially my favorite. I think aside from grit and passion, it's GENEROSITY and OPENNESS that stand out as qualities that make Joe and his work just remarkable. Generosity and openness not just to other people but to one's self, to one's own ideas - that spirit and deep belief that things can happen and that you can make it happen. I think those qualities are present in you and your work as well, and those are two things I definitely am taking away and keeping with me from this interview. This one was a game-changer for me. Thank you!!!

It's been a while since I've been able to dedicate such a long session to watching these interviews from you Chase, but man am I so glad I chose this one! I have no doubt that many more are equally as great, but this just instantly connected in such a special way compared to so many other interviews I see with other people in similar positions. Thanks for opening up your platform to bringing out beautiful stories from amazing people ✌️

Glad you were able to check it out. What about the podcast? Sometimes a bit easier to listen on the go. Great to see your name pop back up in the feed 🤗👊🏼

Yeah man, they’re so great! Been slowly getting through the podcasts lately on the flights I’ve been taking. Been picking shows at random and every single one has delivered something great along the way! If I’m ever about in Seattle/SF, I’d love to sit in on one of the interviews if that’s ever a possibility?

Wow. I LOVE this interview! I've listened to so so many of these interviews -- thank you, Chase -- and am completely enthralled by Joe's mindset and ability to constantly stare "NO" in the face with hope and creativity. And a smile. I need that. Gotta find that part of my spirit that I've buried. I know it's in there, ha!

Wow. That was excellent! And I think the word that you were both looking for was "resourceful". He's the kind of guy who can, and will, build both the hat and the rabbit to pull out of it! ;)

As he talked about the "stranger danger" bias, I wish he would have been asked about the racial bias that happens within AirBNB. I've experienced it FIRST hand and I tell you what, it's an upsetting experience to go through.

Good work Chase! This was very inspirational interview of a man, who just bends his own believes into reality - One way or another way. And the result is a great Success! Everyday we can ask ourselves: what is the next action, or step we can take to get closer to our goals.
