SHREEVER 94 yeah it’s still a classic. A gba and a flash cart and you’re golden, there are heaps of fantastic games to get through and it’s more portable than any handheld since
@@bug-kong N3ds is more portable imo. little bigger, still easily pocket-sized, but much better battery & backlight (extremely important for portable gaming, honestly), super easy to install cfw, capability of emulating Ps1+everything older, as well as having built-in VC emulation for nes, snes, gb, gbc, gba, etc. natively which usually surpasses third-party emulation in accuracy, ends up making it a much better device for portable gaming imo. nothing really beats a hacked vita, though
It's hard to overstate how remarkable the GBA version of THPS2 was at the time. There's three times in my life that I have been blown away by a game in the sense that playing it for the first time really felt like we had entered a brand new era in gaming from a technological standpoint. THPS2 for the GBA, THUG2 Remix for the PSP (it was basically a portable PS2 game and I was in awe of that fact), and GTA3.
Correction god Speedy had this to say about the MIDI soundtracks: "The sound engine might use MIDI, but it's likely it's some sort of tracker format since it uses the GAX Sound Engine and was composed by Manfred Linzner who has a history of making Amiga music." :) any excuse to plug Speedy's channel: ua-cam.com/channels/ee6OxuVy7crcYavcA2ibAw.html also lmao check this out ua-cam.com/video/KtEeo2RVOOU/v-deo.html for the full UNCUT xindictive rant also an amazing thumbnail and gif of me at the end ty ❤
Those were some really playable games for the time, I remember everyone going nuts over them. The low res models are goofy but probably also allowed much more frames of animation over full sprites
Played the holy hell out of 2 3 and 4 on the GBA. I really liked how the foreground would go slightly transparent when you were below the edge of bowls and quarter pipes, that was really helpful. Also the way you "snapped" to stuff when pressing the grind button helped out a lot with the isometric perspective wonkyness. Some of the points requirements in career were pretty damn unforgiving though.
Thug 2 was the only one i had played growing up I'll be honest. But hey it taught me about the Ramones since it had a watered down rock n roll high school.
I bought the DS version on Sk8land back in the day. It’s a really good game. It feels like a continuation of the PS1 games. I still play it every now and then.
You ever play the DS versions of American Sk8land and Downhill Jam? Haven't played them in bloody years but I remember them being pretty good for the time!
I always thought the player character in all these games were just a sprite that was drawn for all the possible angles you could be facing like Sonic 3D. Learning that they were actual 3D models after all this time is like a revelation, and going back to it now it's extremely obvious to me that they're models. It's just like woah man.
Well then, I wish I saw this earlier today. I was looking at underground in a shop but ended up getting Avatar instead. It looks like something I would actually enjoy.
I got THPS2 and Castlevania Circle of the Moon at launch with a GBA. Amazing games, amazing times. Although I do remember having to get the lighting exactly right to play Castlevania. It was ridiculously dark and murky
wow, weirdly enough, that reminds me of the spyro gba games. and jet set radio on gba. also, once the portable tony hawk videos are finished, also, the handheld versions of the ea big games like ssx and burnout would be interesting.
I have played all of these extensively except Downhill Jam. Tony Hawk 3 is definitely the best of all of them. I beat the game 100% with every character and even got all the gaps. It was a blast. I probably put a good 80+ hours into THPS3. The secret unlockable level was a fun reward too.
I had THPS2 the Christmas it came out and brought it to school when we got back. I remember my classmates were blown away that it looks so similar to the PS1 version. At the time it was the most impressive thing anyone had seen on a handheld.
you should have thrown in Jet Set Radio gba onto this video as a bonus or something since it was also by VV and runs on a similar engine to the pro skater and underground engine etc...
this might sound completely nuts but i've been consistently been playing thps2 since i got it. it's by far my favourite, not only because the environment appears to be constructed with polygons instead of the prerendered ugliness of the ones after, but the level design is way stronger for allowing more "realistic" lines that make sense to me as a real-life skateboarder. i've put hundreds of hours in free skate mode, it's the best way for me to destress, zone out, take a break, etc. ...
"as an adult I just don't have the time" is always a good excuse when you're doing this solely for a youtube video, proving you have all the time in the world.

Ah man so many memories of Thug 2 on the GBA. I remember it never registering me completing the final goal and getting so frustrated. I tried picking it up recently and oh boy. Kinda wack lol. Good video though. I like seeing more of personality shine through. The self aware moments are great
I was never a big fan of the THPS series, but when I first played the GBA version of 2, it seriously blew me away. In some ways, I liked it MORE than the Playstation counterpart, and I certainly think it's a much more noteworthy technical marvel!
This was a great video and I love to see these games get some attention. When I was growing up I played the crap out of THPS4 and THUG1 on my GBA. Later on I played them on PC and consoles, and they were good, but these versions never appealed to me as much as the isometric GBA games. I genuinely think THPS4 and especially THUG1 are among the best games on the GBA and the very best of the Tony Hawk games on any console. I've never felt a desire to revisit the 3D PC and console games, and yet I still go back and replay the GBA games sometimes, and it's always delightful for me. They have such a unique kind of charm that no other games I know of have replicated.
Tony Hawk Downhill Jam was part of my childhood. I remember I got a Gameboy micro because I didn't want to share a GBA with my sister and I got the game with it. I played it nonstop for years and I have very fond memories of it. I'm sure that if I played it now I would hate it though.
I had THUG2 on GBA as a kid and played the shit outta it. When you're doing DS, I have a feeling you're gonna love Sk8Land. Wasteland was fantastic on PS2 and there was no way they were gonna do it justice on the handheld so making a parallel universe spinoff was a solid idea. I recently played it again (was the first DS game I purchased) and it still remains a kickass game. You can even record your own voice for when you do an awesome combo and another sample for when you bail.
Back in the day, I didn't had a home console, so my first approach to the series was with Pro Skater 2 on GBA. It was great! Also love Underground 2, but for the soundtrack more than anything else.
Controlling the guy just felt so good in these games, they had a fine engine and just had to build the games (maps, objectives, progression) around it.
I picked up THPS4 for $8 earlier this year at Half Price Books. Haven't played it much yet, but if it's as good as you say, maybe I ought to make the effort.
Imo the gbc Tony Hawk was better
Edit: nvm I replayed it
It totally is, tho

Does gba gamedev still alive?!
You can still find it online. It hasn't been updated in a long time but it doesn't really need to be. Go get it and make something cool!
Are you from 2003?
Got anything for us to try?
Heh, I tried to make a home brew gba game, a little rpg. Unfortunately while testing it I kinda bricked my gba...

You should have checked out Jet Grind Radio on GBA. It’s not a Tony Hawk game, but the gba port uses a modified THPS2/3/4 GBA engine
He should also check out the GBA port of Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure, which also looks to use the same engine.
