This was a simple, low key performance, but the music quality and atmosphere are emotionally touching and very enjoyable. Dorothea Roschmann sets a very high bar for Pamina...i always have doubts when others take the role, but i found the soprano in this rendition very good. All in all, excellent, and not too flashy.

Thank you for posting this fantastic performance! Everything about is brilliant, including the choreography and dancing. There is also a superb Don Giovanni from Concertgebouw conducted by JEG with Rodney Gilfry as Giovanni and Ildebrando d'Arcangelo as Leporello from 1994. www.youtube.com/watch?

My only complaint: as they did not have a pit, that wonderful "Papageno Papagena" was somewhat drowned by the orchestra. The singers were too close. The conductor should have placed them a little further forward or behind rather. Soloists are usually placed in front of the orchestra, but I think the acoustics here just weakened the volume of the two singers, but otherwise the conductor did great, as did everyone else. The good thing is though, we see a more historical setup, before they had the pits we do today, which I liked.

In my opinion it was only Papagena who sounded a bit weak and particularly out of pitch. Probably unwell.

Remember, there is always an intermission. Here it was when the screen went dark, but it is the discretion of the conductor/orchestra board. If there are three acts, it's usually after Act 2, though I think this one is only two acts. Always take advantage of the intermission, 15-20 minutes. One reason is the musicians need to rest. Also, people to stretch their legs. It is long, but people had longer attention spans back then.
