I appreciate Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of the opera in the 2006 film.

Very nice! And the translation is singable and mostly faithful to the original German.
Yvonne Kenny is a revelation. I had heard her voice in several fine recordings of various operas but never seen her acting before. Donald Shanks is always a treat, and the ensembles are consistently well balanced and effective, which is so essential to this piece.
The Queen puts a bit too much lower-jaw-flutter into her vibrato, but almost all coloratura sopranos do.

How can you tell any of that given the abysmal sound quality?

The Metropolitan Opera’s translation is wonderful too.

A fantastic production! As a Freemason I think this is the most Masonic of the various productions I've seen. The only thing which ruins it on UA-cam is the constant interruptions from adverts - roughly every 10 minutes and in many instances right at an important dramatic moment!!

I am extremely interested in freemasonry and i would love to hear why you believe this is the most masonic performance from the ones you've seen. please elaborate in detail!

I agree. That would drive me insane! Nothing ruins a video more than some idiot breaking in at a critical point to scream at you about toilet paper! Try upgrading to You Tube Premium. No ads.

If the channel holder sets the advert points less severe, the interruptions would be more tolerable without having to pay YT's ransom.

That's the reason why I bought youtube premium to do away with the ads. Glorious uninterrupted performance!

Powerfully presented. Hearing the English translation was edifying a better understanding of this opera. I also loved the visuals of the Sydney Opera House.

The Monostatos player is amazing, intriguing character as well.

I honestly pity him due to him doing blackface instead of something different with his portrayal of Monostatos. I mostly blame the director for that move...

Thanks for sharing. Duel: Salieri - Mozart 7.02.1786., Schönbrunn. Emperor Joseph II, who liked to organize competitions between composers and operas, for the "Festival in Honor of the Governor of the Netherlands" ordered one-act comic operas on the same theme: "Theatrical Backstage" by: Salieri and Mozart. Mozart - German libretto by Gottlieb Stefani - "Der Schauspiel Director", and Salieri - Italian libretto by Giambattista Casti - "Prima la musica e poi le parole". In Salieri's opera Eleonore was sung by the famous Anna Storacci and &. Salieri's work won and proved the superiority of Italian buffo over German Singspiel. Mozart remained on the level of Gassmann's "Opera Serie" in 1769. In "First Music and Then Words" Salieri improved Gassmann's satire on capricious singers and impresarios and & - now it is "divertimento teatrale" - the creative process of the birth of opera; conflict of topos: buffo and opera series, conflict of music and drama. In the sea of ideas Salieri gives - the embryo idea of the Queen of the Night, the embryo idea of Papagena... Magic Flute 1791., is a "mosaic" created from musical ideas: Wranitzky: "Oberon, Koenig der Elfen" 1789.; Soler: "L'arbore di Diana" 1787. "Der Stein der Weisen, oder die Zauberinsel"1790. (The Philosopher's Stone, or the Enchanted Isle) is a singspiel in two acts, jointly composed by Johann Baptist Henneberg, Benedikt Schack, Franz Xaver Gerl, Emanuel Schikaneder, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1790. The libretto was written by Schikaneder. The opera has several important parallels to Mozart's The Magic Flute, which premiered a year later.

1:01:41 I'm sorry I was used to the cartoon version of The Magic Flute with Papageno's lyrics of "Very well, what the hell... Nothing ventured, nothing gained!" when trying out the magic bells for the first time. I wouldn't accept any other translation 🤣🤣🤣

The most difficult and beautiful aria of Pamina : Ach ich fühle's received a unique translation which is even better than the original German version. The German version is also far more difficult to sing., especially the word Liebe (love) in the high notes.

Yvonne Kenny has an amazingly beautiful and vibrant voice. This and any other low soubrette parts, like Susanna in Figaro, are parts I hope that she would have eventually pursued.

It is a horrible idea to translate the text without listening. This is especially true of Bergman's film, which is a peek at the performances, but they sing in Swedish.

Gran Wilson’s tenor is natural and unforced. Much as I remember it the first time I heard him in Washington Civic’s production of The Gypsy Baron, where he displayed amazing and numerous high Cs.
Tamino doesn’t s allow for those kinds if vocal fireworks, which makes me wonder why he didn’t continue in those higher tessitura roles. Maybe he did and I just didn’t know about it.

One of the four Drottningholm inspired Mozart productions. Having been an OA subscriber for 50 years I wondered who Mr Wilson was. Back in 1986 OA, or Australian Opera as it was then was almost completely a repertoire company with local singers. Mr Wilson here is the only non-Australian I think. A once great company, the third busiest in the western world with up to 17 operas a year. Now reduced because of the young not understanding opera, basically. Like all companies finding it hard to attract audience without resorting to star drawing power, musicals and the usual potboilers. And Sydney needs a proper opera theatre still!
