Thank you so much for this video, it certainly helped. We had replaced the rubber gasket but was never told about the seats. Had to pull back out and replaced the seats. Found parts at Ace Hardware like you said, now no more running water when it is supposed to be turned off.
This little ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.
@@dustyguy I sure did, exactly the valve I have, it’s not just that, you did it like you were talking to your friends, not like you were trying to be a Hollywood Star, Refreshing,,
AWESOME video. First time American Standard handle removal. What's the handle removal tool named? (The first tool you used in this video after the screw driver.) Couldn't make out the name you called it when you pointed it out in your Plumbers toolbox. I will need to buy one ASAP. Hopefully a local plumbing supplier has them. Thank you for your time!
Same EXACT thing happened to me. I thought I would get away with a washer but NOOOOOOOOOOO. I ended up going to a plumbing supply and it was a little more than 30 bucks
At 2:38 the nut that holds the seat in place is loose, tighten it up some more . If you have it tight then you may have 2 washers on the seat nut and it not bottoming out. let me know if that works
valve and seat s-965-4 and s-953-3 . Take the old ones with you, there are a few different ones. This is at Ace Hardware and if they don't have it they can order it
That is the seat that is part of the stem. If you purchase the stem you will also receive the seat also. or at some plumbing stores you can purchase just the seat. Beware there is a right turn and a left turn
Most of the time it's the hot water side. replace the rubber washer and see if that changes it. or turn off the water to the hot water heater and see if thats stops the leak.
The little screw that holds the rubber in backed out on mine. Saved me a lot of time and money, thank you!
Great video. My house was built in 1944, and thanks to you I was able to replace the valves. THANKS!
glad you watched the video and fixed it yourself

You sold me at "gotta get this bugger-bear right in there". Nice to hear good instruction from a good ole boy.
Thanks for the tips. I was working on the same type of faucet stems tonight. Very helpful.
your welcome. Glad it helped you
I just loved this video! Thanks for filming it,!!
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it

@@madcow5150 Thank you for that comment
That was a fine tutorial. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Your welcome and thanks for watching and subscribing
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS IS THE KIND I HAVE. GOD LESS YOU. JANICE
thank you let me know if you have any thing else
Thanks for this video. Have you ever had the seat barrel get stuck inside? My hot side is frozen in place
Yes I have it takes a 4 square carbide easy out to get it out. I'll look for mine and send you a Pic.
Not 4 square , a square carbide easy out
Something like this.
Drill Hog® Square Easy Out Set Screw Extractor Straight Lifetime Warranty
This is on ebay
@@dustyguy thank you very much. I'll check it out
What size shower valve socket did you use?

Go to any hardware store and ask for a tub handle puller
Thank you for your video, the foam is a good idea!
Your welcome
Working on this same bathtub valve. Replaced washers and can't get any cold water out of valve.
Check the seat it maybe jambed in place
Same EXACT thing happened to me. I thought I would get away with a washer but NOOOOOOOOOOO. I ended up going to a plumbing supply and it was a little more than 30 bucks
I can surely believe that. These are some old faucets that a person can't find parts anymore. When you do they're expensive
Where did you get the faucet covers? I need a set
I shouldve specified ....Will all Standard American shower trim kits fit Standard American Shower Valves?
Thanks for sharing, I did the same for our tub/shower. Have you tried removing the diverter valve?
I replaced the valve stems and the diverter needs replacement too. Have you removed/replaced yours?
You leave out information like do you have the thing all the way open or do you have it all the way closed when you screw it in. Open !
should be open when installing it back into the valve. I'll make that clear on the next video. Thanks for the information
Are all American Standard shower valves compatible with each other ?
Thanks, Gerry from San Diego,CA
No. Take the stem and parts to Ace Hardware or a local plumbing supply to get the correct parts.
My handle just keeps spinning, what am I doing wrong? I thought I had everything in right.
At 2:38 the nut that holds the seat in place is loose, tighten it up some more . If you have it tight then you may have 2 washers on the seat nut and it not bottoming out. let me know if that works
i only have 1 washer on my seat and ii is still spinning. don't think i have it seated right.
My landlord is refusing to fix our shower because “it’s too old and they don’t make parts for it anymore”. But I see she’s probably wrong!
Go to Ace Hardware for most of the parts you need , you may have to get stems from a plumbing supplier
What is the part number for the new valve and seat?
valve and seat s-965-4 and s-953-3 . Take the old ones with you, there are a few different ones. This is at Ace Hardware and if they don't have it they can order it

At 3;28 in your video, you pull another part out of the wall stem. That's also a part of the valve ??
That is the seat that is part of the stem. If you purchase the stem you will also receive the seat also. or at some plumbing stores you can purchase just the seat. Beware there is a right turn and a left turn
dusty guy,
Definitely a good thing to know.
Thx very much .. Tim B.
I believe they call the seat a ‘Barrel’ in these kind of designs.
thanks

Where do you get your handle remover?
lowes or home depot or any plumbing supply store buy a good one, some handles are on tight.
ask for a tub faucet handle remover.
My cold water side is leaking so I replaced the whole valve and the seat but for some reason my faucet still leaking. Anyone has a solution?
Most of the time it's the hot water side. replace the rubber washer and see if that changes it. or turn off the water to the hot water heater and see if thats stops the leak.
Let me know
Good video, but did the guy ever hear of plumbers putty? Much better than using foam to seal the hole between the tile and escutcheon.
Good look
Why not stuff it with plumbers putty
you could , probably will fall behind the wall later
