  • DUNSTER | Exploring the medieval village of Dunster Somerset
Dunster, a captivating medieval village nestled within the embrace of Exmoor National Park, is more than just a pretty face. Steeped in history, Dunster boasts a unique blend of architectural wonders, charming shops, and a timeless atmosphere that transports visitors back in time.
Presiding over the village is the magnificent Dunster Castle. Originally a Norman fortress from the 11th century, it gradually transformed into a Victorian country house under the watchful eye of the Luttrell family, who have called the manor home for over 600 years. The castle, now managed by the National Trust, stands as a sentinel, whispering tales of jousting knights and noble families.
Step off the main road and delve into the heart of Dunster. Cobbled streets, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, meander past a delightful array of thatched cottages, each one seemingly plucked from a storybook. Independent shops brimming with local crafts and unique treasures line the streets, while charming tea rooms offer a delightful respite to indulge in a quintessential cream tea. At the heart of this vibrant village scene stands the iconic Dunster Yarn Market. This hexagonal structure, a focal point for trade since medieval times, served as the center of the Exmoor wool trade. Today, it continues to be a bustling hub, adding to the unique character of Dunster.
But Dunster's charm extends far beyond its captivating streetscape. History buffs will find themselves enthralled by the well-preserved architectural gems that dot the village. The remains of a Benedictine priory stand as a testament to Dunster's religious past, while the Packhorse Bridge, a sturdy structure still in use today, evokes a bygone era where goods were transported on the backs of horses.
For those seeking a touch of tranquility, the dramatic landscapes of Exmoor National Park beckon just beyond the village limits. Explore the rugged coastline of West Somerset, where towering cliffs meet sandy beaches and the salty sea air invigorates the soul. Venture further inland and discover the rolling green hills, a haven for England's diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for majestic red deer roaming freely or Exmoor ponies grazing peacefully in the meadows. Dunster serves as the perfect base camp for exploring this captivating wilderness.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a charming escape, Dunster offers something for everyone. With its rich tapestry of history, captivating architecture, and stunning natural surroundings, this enchanting village guarantees an unforgettable experience.
