When the side steps were off, it would have been a good idea to remove the plastic sill covesr to inspect the condition of the sills near the rear arches. Love these cars.
I see a lot of comments to delete EGR, please for the love of god don’t do that, get engine carbon cleaned. Also worth thinking about having your auto gearbox oil flushed, an amazing transformation on drivability my friend. Good luck.
Delete the egr and mapped out . Best decision I made when I had l322 3.6tdv8 , smoking stopped and got alot better mileage. Also when you change the fuel filter, get liqui moly diesel purge and pour the whole can into the fuel filter then fit back onto the car. Diesel purge is the awesome stuff and sorting and Injector issues and hesitation. I used to run a can every other fill up. Inspect the underside of the gear box and check if it's the original sump should be a sticker stating lifetime filter , make sure you do a oil and filter change on the gearbox and it will run so much better ! My l322 used to give me nearly 40mpg on a long run! I've just bought a 4.4SVD8 L405 and the engine is so much more refined and economical with a 8 speed box. But I still prefer the L322!
Would like a compare maybye a couple of weeks on supermarket fuel , then a couple of weeks on say Esso synergy premium diesel after you get the egr done reckon could make a interesting video.
