Roar is Ableton's new distortion device but that only scratches the surface of this incredible effect. Roar can be any one of the following type of audio effects: a saturator, a compressor, an eq, an envelope follower, a delay, a randomizer, a filter bank, a waveshaper, a bit reducer, a sample rate reducer, a source of uncertainty, a noise generator, a band splitter, and more. On top of it all, Roar places modulation sources at the helm to animate various parameters that traditionally we're left static.

Trent Reznor: The Synth
Working on an industrial EP now and it is really cool how Roar fits that. I was afraid we will not get anything as good as Trash 2 for that, now I'm not afraid anymore.
You are hands down the best Ableton and production content producer around.
Man, I can already see someone like Lorn going crazy with Roar!
total NIN vibe👁️
Best video I've seen on Roar yet! Had no idea about some of the inner workings of the plugin.
The only thing Ableton forgot to add: a phase switch so you can flip it which is like super nice when blending it with the dry signal. The thing that Tchad Blake uses a lot.
Anthony again delivering the best music production content in the game.
dude they made the Mick Gordon filter, this is tight
I kinda love brown (noise) mode. ROAR is pretty badass. Thanks for the demo/lesson, Mr. T!
Feedback à la mode! From Roar to Soar! And the fluffy noise textures to absolute apnea! ,,, WAKE what! Another great instructional vid Anthony! So glad I've taken your courses!
Excellent presentation Anthony. Roar is definitely one of my favorite additions to Ableton.
right on Anthony!! Great tutorial
Another great video my man. Most informative Roar deep dive yet. I am sufficiently overwhelmed
What a great video. Thank you so much for these insights.
Fantastic and independent! Learned a ton from this! Rad work sir!
Loved this!! Thanks bud
Thanks so much for this. Your videos are so deep.
Insane vid mate! Thank you 👏
Thank you!!!! This is awesome!
lol that intro, exposure to high levels of saturation turned him into the joker
hahaha this intro though 🤪🔥That track is so sick btw. Love it! 🙌Thanks for the presets man😃
Great pointers all! Roar is one of the things I'm most excited for in 12. I already have it downloaded, just haven't had time to dig in yet.
Great one thanks, a lot to be explored further !
Great video. I'll watch it again when I'm twiddling to try get an understanding of what's happening 👍
ha ha ha.......break out of that straight jacket. Best intro of any of your many amazing tootz. I love the device too
lmao now that's an intro. You rule dude, congrats on 100k!!
Thank you maestro!
Very informative. Thank you
Very cool! Thanks so much.
Dosio advice from the man himself
Really nice explanation Anthony, thanks :)
truly love all of your videos. roar has been a blast. currently watching this now and loving it. i wonder if any of the filters and such will be added to auto filter in the future. until then. roar has been on damn near each track for me. love it on guitars and bass especially.
Your best intro yet
BRUTAL!!!! THX!
awesome! very helpful!
AWESOME!
10:44 the yoi speedrunners are gonna love this
I heard so much potential in this section
i made a few videos on roar, but i only covered a few ways i was using it, and after that i decided to wait. Its such a complex device capable of so many things i was like....i need to spend more time on this to really find crazy ways to use it hahaha But essentially, since i got it, i've pretty much been using it on everything, and its become the majority of my sound design. Even if youre not getting a ton of distortion out of it, its incredibly useful and crazy flexible.
its incredibly helpful to have info on the inner workings of it. I tried to test it and see what i could find, but i really wanted the devs to hand out some tips and tricks so this is excellent
Thanks alot! :)
The Color compensate, the Feedback Gate toggle, things like these should be available on every effect.
Also volume match or gain compensation.
Subbed, good shit
Under the hood baby…leggo…also the vast majority of channels are just for marketing, which is ok too for various reasons, but you cut through the chafe w/this type deep dive. 🤙🏽😎🖤
roar alone is worth the price to upgrade given there are less capable VSTs out there that cost the same. 12 is an incredible update and paves the way for even more exciting updates, given the new UI possibilities etc they introduced as well. Probably required a bunch of rewriting.
This is easily one of the best guides to roar there is, and everything anyone needs to get started doing crazy sound design. Still baffled how much I get out of raw with just a rhythmic sine wave and some octave shifts.
Thanks, this was awesome. Still, I hope they'll add:
1) Separate feedback section for each of the stages
2) visualisation of how the modulations affect the parameters, like when you use the mod devices (value stays, mod ring moves round it)
Holy fucking shit, what it did to that drum set… what a beast
A nice swiss pocketknife. But I still lose sometimes the control by using it. But anyway it's usefull.
very NIN.
that is crazy
I thought there was a hair on my phone
At this point I may as well unsubscribe from every other Ableton production channel haha - seriously, no other video on Roar comes anywhere close to the quality and depth of yours!
Oh, and what an intro!! That evil twin Ynohtna is dangerous 😂
its like the Soundgoodizer but only NIN, noice
bzzzzzzeeeeuuuuwwwwwmmm!
cheers, you have opened the can for me - I’d like Ableton to add a few more features to make it into a west-coast synth.
What is a west coast synth? 🤯
@@ItsWesSmithYo These kinds of synths used wavefolding (a kind of distortion) to add harmonics (timbre) to a sine plus a special kind of gate that also acted as a low-pass filter. The Korg Volca modular is a recent example.
@@jolondixon2311 cool, never heard that term, thanks
This device is the only thing making me want to skip a bill and upgrade from 10
lol, the other Wes
Is it possible to have multiple envelope followers for the frequency ranges in the envelope section? Idea is that the mid and high bands audio signal reacts to their specific envelope mapped to the amount knob. Saturn 2 does this pretty nicely and you can set the envelope to only react within a specific band. Was seeing if Roar could replace this, but it just looks like one envelope follower that you can specify the range of
If you run out of any modulator, you can simply add one via the midi effects. You can add as many envelope followers as you like
When I opened the download file I see it as a folder. I don't see in my Audio Effects list how do I fix this and I am also missing Wavetable preset
Should I even buy Rift? This sounds super nice, its what Ableton's been missing for years.
I find most folks who learn what ableton stock devices can actually do, they tend to buy less and less plugins. Most all plugins are repackaging similar functionality with fancy user interfaces when it’s usually just a combination of common effects found in daw stock devices.
🤟
The original loop wasn't boring though, it was pretty good.
A bit clean and bland.
Roar proved that sometimes its about sound design to make something interesting
every time I think I know everything about Live Anthony comes up with the video and.... i feel like an idot...
You should be the new face of ableton, I can't stop reading the manual with the other guy's accent and I find it highly distracting
Promo*SM 😓
This was ROARSOME! sorry
Great video. I'll watch it again when I'm twiddling to try get an understanding of what's happening 👍
