not everyone on the street is a pro mma fighter/bjj black belt, you'd be surprised just how many people do not know how to fight, aikido is not for fighting other pro fighters, it's for self defence. The question you should be asking, is could seagal defend himself if he were attacked on the street, and not by some pro fighter. He is simply incredible, after watching more and more of his videos like this and listening to him speak, I am growing more and more respectful of the martial arts and of people like him everyday
He is an unregulated fighter like Bruce lee once said when a fighter comes to fight you he comes with the intent to kill you so kill him first. fighting is not about respect. fighting is about doing whatever to take you down even if it means bitting. Fighting is about getting your opponent out of his comfort zone but at the end of the day he will still kick butt. So give him some props
I'm impressed with the speed and skill of the little Japanese guys in dresses diving, twisting and flipping themselves over at the mere thought that someone might touch them. Aikido is certainly the most skilled of all martial arts when it comes to flipping yourself onto the ground and lying there as if you are in pain.
I'm sure Aikido isn't really effective in real life, would be nice to see a UFC fight with a fighter that only knows aikido, this way we can see how it faires against another martial art. But my reason for the comment, I think they flip in purpose because otherwise you could get your arms broken and twisted. I looked at the video and some of the moves they have to flip, otherwise it would break their arm.

I used Aikido many times in a real life situation, while working as a cop , and I can say aikido is 100% real, and works in real life application. I've used it against knife attacks, real attacks on the sides of the road, and against 3 people at once. and I can say that aikido is one of the reasons I made it home. so knock if you want to. but I can say for sure I'm happy to be a 2 Dan in it and was a able to use it when needed.
Aikido and Hapkido come from the same roots in Japanese jujitsu and have much in common, despite the fact that Aikido is from Japan and Hapkido is Korean. The Korean peninsula was under Japanese military occupation from 1910-1945, and during that time, martial artists from both cultures freely intermixed and influenced one another. Upon learning the Japanese arts, the Koreans who founded Hapkido integrated their own methods, borrowing freely not only from such arts as Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do but Chinese traditions as well. As a second dan black belt in hapkido, I have had the pleasure of training with many practioners of aikido over the years and they are always a pleasure to work with. There are many valid and time-tested martial arts traditions; choose one which suits you and your needs. Make sure you are doing something you find enjoyable and challenging and with people you like - because attaining mastery takes many hours of hard training, disciplined study and devotion. Learn from anyone you can - and have an open mind. It is humbling when one realizes that the very best martial artists in the world - people at the very pinnacle of their art - still do not feel themselves complete as martial artists or people; they are always striving to improve themselves, learn something new and help others along the way.

-Wrist locks works my friend (not in all scenarios of course) but works. And is not only Aikido, but a lot of martial arts and self defense systems (like Krav Maga, BJJ, etc) have wrist locks. Of course, you can't base all your martial skills only on that (you need to know how to proper puch, kick, fight in the ground, etc) in order to be a complete fighter, but wrist locks works (in certain scenarios, as ground fighting tecniques doesn't work in all scenarios) and Aikido specialized in wrist locks. It's like Wrestling: it doesn't teach you how to punch and how to kick, it only specialized in projection techniques, but I don't see people complaining about that. -The "3 guys run at you" is just an exercise. It's good to improve foot work, self autolocation, and to learn how to be focused in all that surround you, not missing what happen behind and around you. Of course in real life scenarios, the attacking gang won't attack you like in pre staged Aikido exercises, but the skills you gained before in the Aikido dojo, are good and you can complement them with other things. I practiced Aikido for 5 years and it helped me a lot. In one situation 4 guys try to hurt me and I used this skills (footwork, repositioning, peripheral vision etc) to evade being surrounded, wrist locked one guy (kotegaeshi), punch another guy (basic Aikido atemi), tus creating a gap and run the hell out looking for help. Maybe if I have to fight in an 1vs1 with these guys, Aikido woldn't be enough and they would beat me like a sand bag, but Aikido give me the skills not to be a "Rambo" or a "Steaven Seagal main protagonist", but to create a gap and run away. By the way, forgive me if I typed something wrong, english is not my mother tongue.
@@akumabakemono1447 I have nothing against wrist LOCKS because those are painful. But a wrist throw ain't a thing. Somebody grabs my wrist and I'm going to punch them in the face. It takes two hands for a good wrist lock. Good luck protecting your head why trying to bend my wrist a bit lol
Justin Holmes I’m surprised nobody has explained this to you yet. Yeah the running straight ahead thing is absurd, but the flipping... If these guys DON’T flip, their joints will get broken. These students are trained to do this to avoid having something snapped. Simple as that. Seagal is doing these techniques with speed and power. Try to remain stationary while a strong lock is applied to your joints will result in an injury. Students can’t learn shit if their always getting injured, hence, the flips to avoid something snapping.
Have a look at other 'masters' online, doing demos, etc. etc. Steven Seagal is the only Aikidoka I have seen that applies strength and power to his technique yet appears more graceful than anyone I have seen. People might give him slack for being overweight now, and being a has-been, but man oh man he is the best aikidoka I have ever seen anywhere. My hat off to SS.
The only way that you would be able to make this comment is train for 5 years, hard, and then have your techniques fail,…. Yes martial arts is evolving, but that is just an ignorant, blanket statement.
Great fighting style. For those who think its fake because the throws look strange, Just remember these guys are also trained how to land without breaking their bodies. If just one of these Aikido moves are applied correctly without you falling right it's likely your arm, or skull would crack. These guys are practicing. and don't want their bodies destroyed demonstrating how 1 proper Aikido move, could obliterate your opponent.
Hahahaha, break your skull on those mats? They aren't being thrown, they are throwing themselves, in a real fight as he is turning your wrist you can punch him in his undefended jaw, even if he breaks it, he's laying on the ground and you can stomp him out. I've seen this shit up close. I went to Aikido classes at 18 and could easily smash Everyone there including the instructor with my boxing and I was no champion boxer. They also have no defense against low kicks or takedowns. They have a wristlock, that's it. A whole bunch of fancy setups for a wristlock. It takes a few hours to really get it down, then you have learned all you need from Aikido.
@@mateosmind751 You did this out of Japan. In there you will be fractured for sure. Aikido techniques come from Aiki- jujitsu and works from thousand years. You visited a weake dojo.

I would love to meet him I person before I die. I love is films as soon as they are released I will buy them. They are worth w
Aikido is one of the most impressive forms of martial arts in my honest opinion. Using someones own momentum against them, and controlling their body completely with the use of locking joints
I have a lot of respect for anyone who goes through many years of training to try and perfect a style of martial arts. Because he has done a lot of pretty badly made films, Seagal is open to ridicule...he is not the only one...Seagal is older and overweight...so are most of us as we get older. Most of us got into martial arts because of Bruce Lee movies...phenomenal at what he did...would he be as good now? Probably not. The older you get, you lose a bit of speed, toughness...etc. Most professional fighters, whether boxers, MMA or any martial art would probably tell you this happens. Is any style better? Brazillian Jiujitsu had bragging rights 20yrs ago or so. Very few MMA fighters adopt one style, so the argument is pointless. Who is better? A gun will kill all of us very effectively, if someone knows how to aim and shoot well. I would not challenge Seagal to a fight, nor any martial arts teacher, I have practiced under, as I respect that they have taken the time to teach me what they know. Most have day jobs; some who have business "moxy" and can make this a full time job...but most do this out of respect for those who taught them and feel the need to pass the legacy onto others. I feel many demonstrations seen on videos, especially UA-cam, are those who see something from these people, whether you wish to call them sensei, master, teacher, or mentors, or simply those who are effective at self marketing. Call it adoration, or respect...but they have grasped something that most of us who still practice martial arts wish to achieve. If it is MMA dominance, or street fight reputation, or Hollywood stardom, or simply confidence they can get out of a dangerous situation... that is for each individual to decide. As I have seen in previous comments, ask anyone who is good at fighting, challenge them to a fight...you will probably lose. It won't matter what style you do...the better fighter usually wins...those who fight more, are usually better than those who do not. If you have to fight many, or your life depends on it...fight dirty...and run like hell! Whatever works to get you away from danger is ultimately the goal of any martial arts. The reputation any martial artist, regardless of style, is usually from those who have rarely fought anyone.
Looking at it from another angle, I’m sure if any of those opponents could have taken him down they would have. It would have solidified their reputation in the martial arts world. When people accuse Steven of being fake they are really accusing hundreds of opponents of being fake and taking a dive. Sure, he’s old and fat now but so am I. I wouldn’t want to have faced him in a dark alley.
It is 100% legit. Aikido is a traditional form of martial arts in Japan, and operates by using a persons momentum and body weight against them. I thought Steven Seagal was a fake until I became friends with someone who was a black belt in Aikido who assured me he is the real deal. If you watch the video carefully, what he is doing in most of the throws is using a wrist lock to stop the person and make their upper body go the way he wants, while their lower body is still moving in the original direction, and then he flips them around their center of gravity.
Sensei Gozo Shioda has said that Atemis (strikes) make up over 50% of Aikido. That's why in Yoshinkan an Atemi is given before initiating the technique. So instead of trying to grab someone's hand during a fight, it's a good idea to learn how to strike and move. That way, when someone grabs your wrist or body, you can apply your aikido technique. I'd also recommend Judo for physical strength. A good aikido practitioner must be physically strong (judo) and know how to throw a punch (boxing).
Seagal is great, I dont get all the bashing, he drilled this stuff over and over for many years and he mastered it, if he gets a hold of your wrist you better flip or he'll break it.
I've worked in the music industry for 7 years and protected the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and various other performers. I've utilized Aikido in the real world on multiple occasions. I agree with most of what said in the video however the Tactical aspect of where you physically stand always has a play in the movement and the dynamic. I've fought on Hills I fought on steps and I fought on inclines on multiple occasions. Now people always like to misconstrue when they say to fight. I never went in with the intention of fighting, but the intention of ending a conflict. I should make that very clear. When it came to intervening in situations I've looked at saving two lives, the guy getting kicked in the head, and the guy going to do a life sentence for something stupid.
I have personally trained with a few aikido black belts, and if you don't let your body flip and fly like this your shit is getting broke!! One of these men actually held government contract's and trained certain speacial forces for more than one country. He was so fast and smooth he made it look effortless, trust me it's one hell of an art to defend against
That is some of the sickest shit I have ever seen! I had no idea he was actually that good. I don't know jack about Aikido, but he looks as good as some of the other Aikido masters I've seen on UA-cam.
This is awesome, not only are the techniques solid to begin with but he is insanely good. Some friends of mine used to say jean claude van damme would kick his ass. I have never seen how that would be remotely possible.
I have to say this is a great video,I've always had alot of respect for master sensei seagal,he's dedicated his life to the martial arts just as I have,I'm a high level black belt in several disciplines including Aikido & I've now been a master sensei myself for the past 20 years! I've met master sensei seagal & talked with him, trained with him, went over techniques, sparred,& we watched each other's demonstration's! I have to say I see/hear alot of people poking fun, insulting him & that's very disrespectful & that's a big NO,NO in old school martial arts! This man has accomplished alot in his life and deserves respect!. Keep it flowing master sensei seagal,#Respect!
@@piraliraza its not meant for MMA, never was. Why would anyone who understand aikido ever put themselves in the position of having to fight for their life or for money? that goes completely against aikido and the whole point of it which is to avoid fighting, thus win without having to fight.

It works against people who can't fight or don't know how to but yea, bending down and begging them not to kill you is probably more affective if they're trained
What people don't understand when they watch these videos is that the flips you see is so the guys don't break a wrist or worse. Aikido is about using the momentum of your opponent for your advantage, while mastering it won't look like the demonstration per-say, it is still a very deadly form of martial art
Max Headroom I've had people try the thumb lock or the wrist gimmick that Seagal uses to put people on their knees, all I had to do was pull my hand away. I truly don't think Seagal would be able to do it any better. Also, people say he uses his opponent's momentum against them but what I see is little guys running up to him and pretty much placing themselves in a position to be flipped and jumping to aide him during the flip . Never really seems like an attack at all..I have to say, without a doubt, aikido is bullshit.
It works in street fights! Two different fights and I broke the attacker's arm with simple moves in both fights! It works but takes a long time to master it!
How old are you? You're actually taking the time to let younger people believe that all of this flippity floppity shit is real? Giving people the false sense of security that this is an effective martial arts, just because the worst actor in the world practices it. Should be ashamed of yourself for your stupid comment
Aikido's usefulness has been proved countless times throughout the ages. Not in competitions, but in real life. Back in Japan, before the second world war, "dojo challenges" (where someone from one dojo would show up unannounced and ask to fight the strongest guy, to prove their style was better) were still common, and Aikido had it's fair share. Likewise, Aikido is practised widely by the police, private investigators, army, and more, in Japan.
@@el34glo59 what makes you think the skills used in competition don't work in street fights? There's thousands of videos in the internet of combat sport athletes easily dominating street fights.
Some people don't understand the MMA is not real world combat. At least not since the first few years of UFC when the only rules were no eye gauging and no nut shots. Of course Seagal would have a hard time with MMA. MMA is dominated by ground fighting arts because that's what the rule set tends itself for. In a real fight though, Aikido is for the most part more practical. Oh and flipping isn't for show. It's so they don't break. All that energy has to go somewhere. Either flip or get something broken.
+Chris Mason (KurisuDesu) Shush, you have no idea what you are talking about. Every street fight ends up on the ground so having knowledge in BJJ or Wrestling is crucial for defending yourself. Aikkido is for the fat, awkward, un-athletic martial artists wannabes.
+Eeyore I been in a lot of street fights. More than 3 seconds on the ground and I would not be typing homes. One on one fights commonly go to the ground I agree. Especially when both guys are not skilled fighters. many years growing up in a fighting city Boston and ground fighting wich I do have skill in has helped 0. Useless in the streets, hood, bar room brawl. I have gone against people armed with pool sticks and multiple opponents and skills used here have been way more useful. Again speaking from experience. I respect mma but for the streets I seriously laugh my ass off at mma fan boys.
deadlylyrx I get the reason for the flips but I have been doing martial arts for about 15 years, spanning all kinds of TMA and MMA and I have to say in all the disciplines i have practiced Aikido is among the least effective (Still better than krav maga and kung fu) What really irks me is when the least effective martial arts practitioners over compensate and claim that their martial art is the most deadly/superior. Aikido has good philosophy and is a wonderful life style undoubtly, but it is by no means useful for street fights.
+deadlylyrx I agree i would laugh at MMA fan boys yet i would not laugh at MMA fighters or think for one minute they are not some of the best fighters in the world. Those men an women work on every aspect of combat to become some of the most well rounded fighters to ever compete. Some may prefer a ground game some may enjoy stand up it just depends on the fighters style. I do understand what you mean by a hood fight because if you go to the ground you will be mobbed or beat down with weapons.
I've studied it off and on, never really stayed with it but can't never get completely away from. Part of me that thinks it's baloney but another that sees a lot more to it. A high degree of balance awareness, for yourself and the opponent. The ability to avoid direct attacks by redirection, etc, etc. I used aikdio in several situations a police officer. Some of which very much like the moves on here except the guy didn't go flying but he did fall. Check out "Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere."
Ohooooh mercy, this is funny. I haven't laughed this hard in months. I keep thinking of that move you used see in cartoons, where the two bad guys would rush in simultaneously, but the cartoon character would duck and their heads would smash together. XD
Lots of ignorant comments. Studied aikido for years. And was good at randori. Secret is not that people are good acrobats helping Seagal look good. Secret is they are giving a lot of energy (momentum) in their attacks. Randori works well on the street where people aren't trained and have often had too much to drink. Where aikido is weak is in MMA, where there are compact attacks with no overextension. Also on when it goes to the ground, wresting (greco-roman not WWF) will serve you better than aikido. MMA is dominated by jujitsu due to its short attacks, ground work and submissions. One-on-one Seagal would win virtually every bar fight he was ever in and no MMA fights. He would dominate many karate forms if he was in his prime. But remember what the Gracies did? Took all comers and dominated. Ukemi of his students is world class, but no one gives these kinds of committal attacks in MMA. Still not bad for a "soft" martial art.
Uber Genie Finally a sensible comment. yes, anyone fighting for real is not going to leave a hand outstretched, releaxed and openhanded even if they weren't expecting it to be grabbed. While I appreciate that's only a way to practice it is still an integral part of the attack simulation that aikido is based around and it does not simulate a real attack. I admire and respect aikido and it has it's place as per comment above, but it's not a 'fighting' art. As for Seagal, it's like Rickson Gracie said, his mental approach and philosophy are of a genuine martial artist and for that he should not be knocked. He is however untested in the public eye so nobody is in a position to comment on his effectiveness. (yes he possibly had one or two scraps at his dojo to establish his gaijin credibility in the early days, anyone run a dojo who hasn't had that?).
+TheFilthdog You have to have A LOT of scraps, to use your words, to gain credibility enough to be the first non Japanese in history to run a dojo in Japan, so, if that story's true, that alone tells us a lot about Seagal's fighting background... . Seagal in his prime is not fake, he's the real deal. Then of course they made him a movie star and exagerated. As for ground fighting Aikido is not top, but it does give some good bearings until you are not laying back against the floor. And then again ground fighting is not all and is not even so practical in real life especially on the street. We could say the same about BJJ: it's not practical standing up facing a good boxer or ma puncher as long as he stands up and throws punches at you.... . So...what? To each one his own. Aikido is not a "fighting" art you say, ok maybe only because it's a... defensive art, but sure not because it's not effective in fighting. Sure most times in a real fight the arms are not that outstretched and relaxed, but you can still grab them and adjust your grip soon, it' just not going to be so clean direct and easy as it looks in a demostration. It's roughly the same with Judo when there's no kimono at hand's reach to grab the opponent and many tecniques look impossible, but some aren't impossible, just less immediate. And once in a position, if a guy doesn't roll over or follow through a certain leverage like a uke does even too well, provided the tecnique is done correctly and with max energy and grip, he can get seriously hurt. If not a broken joint, a twisted one. Same as in a submission leverage in BJJ without tap out. Have you ever fought a good Aikido guy to tell anyway? What ma do/did you practice? Sure Aikido already after 2 years of good training from a guy with enegy and mobility is effecive against the average guy throwing haymaker punches dwelling close to me long enough. It takes way more training to make it work with the professional using jabs in a straight line of course....
Your comments make many intelligent points. Bear in mind that the effectiveness of arts like aikido is limited for use in MMA for the simple reason that if small joint locks and some of the other methods were allowed in the ring, many of the fights would end much too quickly to be entertaining. Done properly, a simple innocuous-looking finger or wrist lock can disable a much larger opponent - but who wants to watch that? That's part of the reason MMA prohibits these methods; they are very effective in the real world on the street, but are not suitable in the ring. Many practioners of aikido, hapkido and jujitsu add other methods to their repertoire to enhance their abilities to fight at all ranges, and under all conditions - on the ground or standing. Seagal never fights on the ground in his movies, at least not the ones I have seen. How's his ground game? I don't know. I think that if he was young and still in his prime, he would embrace BJJ and other innovations - but that's just me. I don't know. When I look at his repertoire, Seagal seems pretty well-rounded apart from his ground game. He's clearly studied wing-chun and some of the other striking arts, because he has very quick hands and strikes and kicks well - especially for so large of a man. Even at his age, I wouldn't want to go up against him.
It kills me how MMA guys have to go to every single Aikido video and talk shit about! I mean damn, are they that insecure with themselves? They spout off about how it would never work in a real fight or mma fight. Cuz a mma guy would never grab your wrist or anything like. But yet they train everyday to avoid being pinned down and yet still get pinned down. So don't talk shit about a trained fighter would know better than to grab your wrist, cuz they know better than to get pinned down but yet they still do! The truth is, any martial art is only as good as the practitioner!!
That's absolutely not true. The reason other martial artists shit on Aikido isn't to be bullies and take up space in someone's schedule, it's to inform inexperienced people of how Aikido is not realistic so they don't get scammed and waste their money. That is why. It isn't to brag about 1 martial art being better than another, it's to protect people from giving their money away to non sense.

But if mma is your goal you need to train everything. In a street fight you can be a jack of all trades because even though you don't excel in 1 area, you'll still dominate the average person in every area since you're trained and they're not.

I do hapkido man and i want to know whats the difference between the two? Is hapkido better? Are they the same? Im a yellow belt in hapkido
+david mason Hapkido is way more lethal and effective. Stay in Hapkido if you value your life.

I wrestled enough years to know people don't just flip over when you twist their wrists and they don't run at you waiting to get clothes-lined.

Aikido is one of the most impressive forms of martial arts in my honest opinion. Using someones own momentum against them, and controlling their body completely with the use of locking joints
Do you still think this in 2023?
@bluepandaman
Yes , OP is still blinded by martial arts fantasy.
Impressionnant Steven Seagal ! 💪💪👍👍👍🙏
Steven Seagal then and now, He's still fast and a true master of aikido. Plus, a badass.
this is my first day on the internet and I think he should be God Emperor of the World!

I’m feeling stupider just being here.
Trevor Rogers same it’s full of ppl who wasted their time training Aikido and are trying to justify their fuckup online.
Some of the movements look hokey, but some look legit.

Those are some great actors.
Such a Nice form of dance, hey do The aikido dance with me
Seagal is great, I dont get all the bashing, he drilled this stuff over and over for many years and he mastered it, if he gets a hold of your wrist you better flip or he'll break it.
No he didn't. Makes stuff up as he goes, just like taking credit for Silvas mma training. He's a compulsive liar.
The reason these men are falling like that is they're trained to so they're not injured in the throw.
Very effective against people running at you with their hand out asking for an autograph.

Aikido is fake
+deadlylyrx I agree i would laugh at MMA fan boys yet i would not laugh at MMA fighters or think for one minute they are not some of the best fighters in the world. Those men an women work on every aspect of combat to become some of the most well rounded fighters to ever compete. Some may prefer a ground game some may enjoy stand up it just depends on the fighters style. I do understand what you mean by a hood fight because if you go to the ground you will be mobbed or beat down with weapons.

amazing, the best thing i've ever seen !
XD
25 years studying with the Masters in Japan to become that which Seagal make's look easy.

Your so right ! People underestimate him so much
Uber Genie Finally a sensible comment. yes, anyone fighting for real is not going to leave a hand outstretched, releaxed and openhanded even if they weren't expecting it to be grabbed.
By the looks of it....Steven would be the best bull matador in the world
It kills me how MMA guys have to go to every single Aikido video and talk shit about!
@@bane3991 nah it is that cause its not a scam mma isnt life being a jack of all trades isnt being a master at anything, all the time you spend learning all these styles you could stick to one or two and go far with them, his comments are for comments like yours
@@fidgipl In order to go far in mma you have to train all the disciplines.
If you're trying to be a kick boxer and you waste your time in judo than yeah, it's a waste to be a jack of all trades. But if mma is your goal you need to train everything.
In a street fight you can be a jack of all trades because even though you don't excel in 1 area, you'll still dominate the average person in every area since you're trained and they're not.
Something like Aikido isn't going to work on a resisting fighter. Aikido assumes a guy will just let you grab their hand and flip them.
Mma is for cavemen
you the best steven seagal
aikido means The word "aikido" is formed of three kanji:
合 - ai - joining, unifying, combining, fit
気 - ki - spirit, energy, mood, morale
道 - dō - way, path
but the secret is abandon yourself and trust the human instinct to move
Steven Seagal knows aikido, karate, judo and many other words.

Don't understand why Segal gets so much stick when it looks like to me that Aikido is going to be the martial art that is gong to save your ass on the street these days with knife crime and all that. He's got quite the finesse here, quite the art form.
Exactly
I was actually approached by an aikido black belt yesterday because a kickboxing/ bjj school was closed!! He described what he does as what Jason Bourne uses!! I'm still going to checkout his school today despite what some of these internet martial artist have to say lol!
Have you been living under a rock? Its so damn obvious why he gets hate
oh yeah! Yes! that is true. I have been taking it for a year. It is an amazing art.
Master of the dance, master of the choreography, master of Hollywood action 90s movies

Seagal has trained in several martial arts and developed his own style, from experience when he was challenged several times in japan etc.... he's an amazing aikidoka and an outstanding martial artist.
