I got into the Teardrops late, through being a fan of Julian Cope's late-80s solo work. So I missed this on TOTP first time round. Very funny. Troy looks great ... I met him years after the Teardrops, he was working at York's Theatre Royal, lovely guy.
Despite only having a few hits, these were one of the best bands of the era.....could have been as big as Duran Duran with the right backing, but Julian Cope was far too individual and his own person to be packaged by a corporate record company.
Great song, and a lovely man too, and who else could get away with a chorus, that a tuneful sheep could sing? In fact he's quite fond of sticking a few discrete "Baa ba ba ba bahs" into his songs, Gotta love that man!
My friend died exactly when this was released (Sept 81) , so it's always had a deep emotional linkage for me. So glad Cope was there as an outsider to the whole Electro/Romantic movement............although his "band" clearly didn't get it in any way shape or form judging by their crap dress sense. Great song
julian got on the number 14 bus i was travelling on in norris green in liverpool when the band were at height of their fame in 1980s...was so weird..all the oldies on the bus had no idea who he was..lmao.
How many of the Teardrop's tunes have you posted this comment on? I've seen it on at least three. I'm not going to give you the 'thumbs down' bollocks because I think it's true. They did some good tunes, I'm fairly nuetral and they were a bit poncy.
On their return to the UK, the five-piece Teardrop Explodes recorded the song "Passionate Friend" (which was allegedly about Cope's brief recent relationship with Ian McCulloch's sister, further increasing the friction between Cope and his former bandmate). Released as a single, it reached No. 25 in the UK chart and gained the group another Top of the Pops appearance (in which Cope performed wearing a ripped pillowcase he’d made into a T-shirt, later claiming to have been tripping on LSD throughout the performance).
ariesleorising me too, I have loved it since it first came out when I was a teenager! Gonna turn 50 in 2 weeks and I can't find it on you tube that is playable, how did you manage to see it?xx
Troy Tate dressed like Doctor Who. Bass Player dancing like Andy McClusky, the Teardrop dream was coming to it's too rapid end. I loved their music wholeheartedly - oh to be 16 again !
druggies see drugs everywhere and that is their downfall. JC's influences are quite diverse but not acid based. He is far to clever for that kind of self-harm.
Sure, I agree. I love his music, he could be a 3 headed monster and still would The Bard to me. Really, even his recent stuff is amazing, and it's been a while since Fried... Anyone hear "Soon to Forget Ya"?
Gotta love Julian Cope though, intya? funny, I wasn't that into Teardrops at the time, 'cos it was a bit Gay, wuddn't it, but I got right into JC with Fried, and I love it, Autogedden, all of the early Teardrop stuff, that was some of the most perfect pop ever written. And what a Fahckin' Hippy that Nu-Rom Pop boy turned into! Right when it wasn't that cool to be a Hippy, too. Gotta admire the blokes Charisma though. So laid back, he's limbo!
Cope hated totp...the TEXP were fantastic, ive still got all the singles from TEAR 1 TO TEAR 88...plus the original kilimanjaro, before the zebra cover re-issue...anyone else have that?...never seen another copy since 1982!!
I doubt this was the legendary TOPT Cope was allegedly spaced. Balfe was apparently playing pretend trumpet too but he is not there in this either. Myth and legend....... Still TTE were the nuts!
It didn't lighten mine but I put the matches away .;) The uplifting singles from Teardrop Explodes fell into the gloom of 82. Pity that TE did not stay together for a year or two more , I think the UK music scene would have been better for it. Dont believe the 'lsd' story Copey watches for the cameras moving and lipsyncs perfectly. if i'd been trippin the lights and the audience would have been a big distraction :-D
bushmustdie2 - The Teardrops also had a posthumous album of previously unreleased songs called "Everybody wants to shag...The Teardrop Explodes". (No, I'm not making that title up!)
I saw Ian McCulluck about 5 years ago, and I always thought he was too up himself, so I asked him for his autograph, and while he was writing it, I said, (to wind him up tho,) Yeah, can you just write, to Paul, from Julian, and he looked at me and stopped writing, and said, "who the fuck do you think I am?" so I said Julian Cope, innit? and he done a right flouncy little hissy fit, and went off, all sulky, and I laughed fuckin tits off, my tits off! But it was funny!
Me too. Worst photograph on an album cover EVER. The 80s hairdo's on this TOTP clip are beyond fabulous. Can't decide which is worse, Julian's or Gary'!
@scrambang Yes, "Treason" is a stroke of genius. I'm not a fan of "Reward" myself, though that seems to be one of their bigger hits. However, I do recommend "Tiny Children" and "When I Dream."
@ duxame...just an opinion. Aren't we here to give opinions? File this with overrated stuff such as: Orange Juice,The Smiths, Section 25 and Birthday Party
God! The tune's great... but the look is even worse than Simple Minds... a sort of down-market Bowie! Better to stick to my L.P.s and forget the video...
I loved the Teardrop Explodes and that still must be the best name for a band ever!
Julian Cope - legend!
One of the best singers ever...and most underrated. His newest Black Sheep is a startling, surprising return to form and his best in almost 20 years.
Happy memories of my childhood teens days of 1981! Great record....I've never knowingly heard it on any commercial airwaves since!
omg - remember hanging out in Erics -Teardrop, Mighty wah,
Echo and the bunnymen - good times!!!
I remember this back in "81. Fresh out of Liverpool poly for art & design. Printed textile design. Living back home in London.💖🌹🦋💕🇬🇧
unique song writing talent and excellent lyrics.
Julian Cope was completely out of his gourd in this performance.Brilliant.

wow these guys are pretty awsome, im now happy im getting guitar lessons from their guitarist
Which one Alan or Troy ?
I'm sure I was on holiday when this was a hit . Driving around and hearing this and OMDs Souvenir and Tainted Love on the radio all the time too.
Great days, when music was interesting
saw Julian Cope in L.A. in 1986 - awesome.
Despite only having a few hits, these were one of the best bands of the era.....could have been as big as Duran Duran with the right backing, but Julian Cope was far too individual and his own person to be packaged by a corporate record company.

I just discovered this band. How comes I missed them ? They were a piece missing in my huge music collection !!!
My friend died exactly when this was released (Sept 81) , so it's always had a deep emotional linkage for me. So glad Cope was there as an outsider to the whole Electro/Romantic movement............although his "band" clearly didn't get it in any way shape or form judging by their crap dress sense. Man, I loved these guys...
I bought Wilder before the first record, and became a Cope fanatic when he went solo. This is my favourite TE classic!
Great song!
julian got on the number 14 bus i was travelling on in norris green in liverpool when the band were at height of their fame in 1980s...was so weird..all the oldies on the bus had no idea who he was..lmao.
the most perfect song ever
Mmmm not sure about that but it’s a great tune from a great band nevertheless 🎙👍
Great memories of being a student in Liverpool endlessly playing this on my Walkman
A well held together performance for someone twattered on LSD
wonderful
the video set is whackadoodle but it was the 80's, Julian is brilliant, he looks adorable
I can't believe I'm 61 now,and I was just 20. Student at what was Liverpool polytechnic now John Moore's university.
Happy 63rd to Druid Dude!!
this was a great music form the early 1980's how many albums did he make? i nknow he west solo for a while
Hang on to it Carlos!!! it could fetch millions... hha!!
GREAT GREAT band !!! Original sound as it gets ....
Teardrop Explodes were such a great group and good to see in concert.
Julian Cope is such a brilliant and very under-rated singer.
Gloria bendita, perfección pop la de teardrop explodes.
absolute classic and perhaps their best song
Reward,Treason(it’s just a story),Passionate Friend can’t split them🎙😎👍
@kosmischesynth ..did these guys tour with Hall n Oats once ? :-P
How many of the Teardrop's tunes have you posted this comment on? I've seen it on at least three. I'm not going to give you the 'thumbs down' bollocks because I think it's true. They did some good tunes, I'm fairly nuetral and they were a bit poncy.
music perfection my favourite song everxxx
+jake888999 great great song. Would certainly be in my top 10
Courtney hung out with the Teardrops...in his book Head-On when he speaks of the character 'The Adolescent', well, that's her.

Still love this song after all these years!
ariesleorising me too, I have loved it since it first came out when I was a teenager! Gonna turn 50 in 2 weeks and I can't find it on you tube that is playable, how did you manage to see it?xx
Lee Morris I'm not sure. It just played.
What's the difference between a cow and the Teardrop Explodes?
One has horns at the front and a c**t at the back, the other has a c**t at the front and ..........
you just can't stop singing in with that chorus - it could lighten the mood of an arsonist
This is fantastic! I love the Teardrop, and what a great tune! We want more! (well, if you've got it). Cheers!
Troy Tate dressed like Doctor Who. Bass Player dancing like Andy McClusky, the Teardrop dream was coming to it's too rapid end.
I loved their music wholeheartedly - oh to be 16 again !
They were out of their minds of LSD during this Top of The Pops recording.
I'm reading Head On
A Don't Think So
Ever Taken Acid, Love Teardrop Explodes Tho x
druggies see drugs everywhere and that is their downfall. JC's influences are quite diverse but not acid based. He is far to clever for that kind of self-harm.
@@annuvynarawn392 little do you know. He's written about it in his book.
You have to love Julian.
Fecking Ace!!
Julian Copious amounts of acid
oh...take that back. jeff Hammer is on the piano.i didnt even notice ther was one under there.

Sure, I agree. I love his music, he could be a 3 headed monster and still would The Bard to me. Really, even his recent stuff is amazing, and it's been a while since Fried... Anyone hear "Soon to Forget Ya"?
SO passionate.
And on trumpet, Mr. Tony Levin
Superb
The zig zag set is brills
someone needs to change julian's droopy drawers
All very '60's. 😍😍
This song and Reward put the teardrop explodes firmly on the map.and I don't just mean Liverpool.
LOL...I've got one !!
So am I. You make it sound like a BAD thing!
The Laughing Boy.
@scrambang
Oh, we were all so eagerly awaiting your judgement. So now we know.
Does anybody have Colours Fly Away on vid?
I'm glad they have poor fashion sense. Makes the music all the better.
wtf is the guy with the blue guiter doing ..lol
Great Song !
@kosmischesynth I'm looking at his eyes right now, at around one minute into the video, and he *does* look high...
Where is that deluxe edition of Wilder? Kilimanjaro got the deluxe redux; Wilder is easily as good!
@selffamily1 Ha! I was totally joking but based on your comment I'm starting to wonder if that really IS him...
I doubt this was the legendary TOPT Cope was allegedly spaced. Balfe was apparently playing pretend trumpet too but he is not there in this either. Myth and legend....... Still TTE were the nuts!
ah the summer of 81 the summer of RIOTS
OK, so I'm off by about 3 years. You weren't supposed to take it literally. It was the spirit of the joke. Good sarcasm though.:-{D=
Funny thing about the bass player. Cope in his diaries hated the way he'd try to upstage him by flailing around
It didn't lighten mine but I put the matches away .;) The uplifting singles from Teardrop Explodes fell into the gloom of 82.

Bassist thinks he's in Duran Duran.
Vote for Ron Paul for peace in the usa and get the hell out of this war.
Get out of Iraq
Vote Ron Paul
bushmustdie2 - The Teardrops also had a posthumous album of previously unreleased songs called "Everybody wants to shag...The Teardrop Explodes".
(No, I'm not making that title up!)
Never heard this song before. Quite catchy. Why does it make me think of Wombles....
yeah and he's full of acid and out of his mind....great book.
Good sarcasm on YOUR comment. Just thought that I needed to clarify.:-{D=
Fucking classic!
at first i thought it was jim carey parodying a rock star
Thank you for your comment!
2:20 and that kids, is how I met your mother.
They were tripping on acid during this performance
Me too. Worst photograph on an album cover EVER. The 80s hairdo's on this TOTP clip are beyond fabulous. Can't decide which is worse, Julian's or Gary'!

he is on lsd really keeping it together cant say I could do thatx
Julian, gay?
I'd ask Dorian.
Erm, anyway this is supposed to be about the music...
Maybe he thought it was a Duran Duran audition
Who else but Julian Cope could go onstage barefoot and in leather jodphurs and look cool?
Hehe, one of Courtney Love's favorite songs. Would you believe that? Teardrop is so much better.
I'm sure the noncy looking band bacame modern romance ???
@lewisner Check my channel. I was a major Adam Ant fan autumn '81 and these guys caught my attention : ) I HATED Prince Charming lol
@ duxame...just an opinion. Aren't we here to give opinions?
File this with overrated stuff such as: Orange Juice,The Smiths, Section 25 and Birthday Party
At 2.48 its the melody from rooling stones, as tears go by.
oh and Fischer z(yuck!) also lol
God! The tune's great... but the look is even worse than Simple Minds... a sort of down-market Bowie!
Better to stick to my L.P.s and forget the video...
Great song despite the awful clothes & the look of the band.
having a rough time with this band. only song that's grabbed me is "Treason".
i'm gonna say this band was a bit overrated, sorry!
What utter drivel.
