I know dammed lovers out there wouldnt necessarily agree but Phantasmagoria - what a great and massively under-rated album. Bout time it was re-released
Yes, they went more gothic, and earlier than other Goth bands too, I'm guessing about '78 and definitely by the Black Album in 1980. I tend to think of them as the original Goths.
Many fans of The Damned are selecting their music on "Punk years" and "The gothic years". But not me. I like every album they made. So i like "Damned Damned Damned" as much as i like Phantasmagoria or Anything.
I haven't gone through the whole collection yet, but I'm looking forward. I just did a review of their The Black Album. There's a real mix of Punk and Goth from song to song, even within songs. Easy to pick out where Dave's writing the lyrics.
The piano intro to this is still bloody fantastic. Nice quirky goth lyrics & I agree its pacing & melody sounds similar to Madness with a large pinch of Spanish salsa on the trumpets...The Damned were never shy of wearing their musical influences on their black satin sleeves...;)
@@alvaronoldor2462 Literally a year late, but isn't Cuba in the Caribbean? Doesn't that mean that technically Salsa did not originate from South America?
For who states back in the days want to have lived, I as an 80s kid are now able to watch the old shows and MV and have way more access to the music we loved back then and still do.
I'm so glad Dave held that torch a good enough distance from his head. With all that hairspray, his head would've gone up like a rocket, and he and Michael Jackson would've been laying next to each other in the burn ward.
I love this song. It randomly pops into my head and I can't help but sing it, even if just a mutter. David Vanian is my favorite front man and will always be. ❤

Looks like there are a couple of actors from Timebandits in the video. Derek Deadman at 1:35 who played Robert and I think at 1:39 it's Mike Edmonds who played Og, though I could be wrong on that one. Both have been in loads of other things too. The song is based on the cartoon character "Grimly Feendish - The Rottenest crook in the World!" an incompetent master criminal.
Saw them last night in Detroit, they were damned awesome. Unlike other bands from the original punk era, they are getting better and better. They tore the place up.
When I first became Goth around 1980 or 1981 I looked to listen to different bands later on. I got the cassette tape of this album and I didn’t really catch the vibe of the music at that time now as a middle-aged individual I appreciate much much more.
bbbBatBoy!-Salutatations to who uploaded this gem-to my eternal embarrassment At time I was way too uptight to fully appreciate them-I was to rigid in my Bauhaus/iggy devotion
Sounds like they had a copy of 'The Who Sell Out' kicking around. The 'Bad Bad Bad Boy' part reminds me of the 'Love Love Love' part of 'Our Love Was'. Two brilliant UK bands in any case.
@TheSnowballEarth Interesting observation, and apt. XTC is one of my ALL-TIME favorite bands. Andy Partridge is a complete genius. Thank you, I'm off to my Itunes XTC section, now :)
A few familiar faces in there from the world of TV, Derek Deadman of Never the twain and John Dair who was crusher in Porridge. Also popped up in the housemartins video happy hour.
Despite the contrary, I found this particular album by The Damned to be fun.... Especially during the height of my goth days (yes I know they are punk, I enjoy those albums too), this one is just so much fun with great songs!
I kept thinking "oh Christ, he's going to set his hair on fire." I love really love this song, the baritone with the harpsichord. The video is hilarious, tho. So stupid! I love it. So hammy, so dated, and still awesome. And I love that Dave HAD to have that (actual) torch, even when it's blocking his face. Tragedy, cuz... wow. That is a pretty man. I get the feeling he insisted on having it in every shot. Imagine having to relight that thing for every take. Best Punk ever. Gonna go listen to more of their Goth now.
Imagine an alternate universe where Sid Vicious DOES become the singer of the damned. Now how does your New Rose major punk hit video sound! All jokes aside this is some great content!
superb track, bought the single back in the day (85 was it?)... had a lovely double sleeve from what i remember. This should have been huge but barely scratched the charts
Their most recent albums have combined their gothic rock with their original punk rock, with a bit of prog rock for good measure. Definitely check out Grave Disorder.
I went to school with the current drummer of The Damned, apparently. Well, if he stayed in the sixth form, which I don't know if he did. It doesn't matter, as I wouldn't recognise his face. But what I wanted to mention was - that Dave Vanian (not his real name) reminds me a lot of Lord Tony Hadley of Cheesy Pop Records. Both wore strange outfits in the early 1980s.
They got some stick off purist fans when the E.P. was released, but I'm still whistling it 40 years later! Great song, great band...great comic character!
but, vanian took the look of the hairstyle and clothes from classic victorian and british gothic style ,,and from vampires like christopher lee and lily munster,,

Phantasmagoria is a masterpiece!
I'm a huge Damned fan, and I love Phantasmagoria!
Phantasmagoria was my first music cd i've ever bought - forever in love with them!
One of their best ever. Pop music.
It wasn't underrated when it was released
The most underrated punk band ever!
AGREED!!! They were also the first punk band in existence. Nobody seems to recall that. We owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to the Damned.
They are totally brilliant but I could never understand why they were seen as punk. 'Curtain Call' is the least punk song ever, for example.
Yes, they went more gothic, and earlier than other Goth bands too, I'm guessing about '78 and definitely by the Black Album in 1980. I tend to think of them as the original Goths.
Friskymaus, not the first by at least a decade
@@nineteenthly try "Neat Neat Neat" or "New Rose" then.
It has always reminded me of The Beatles, like a gothic Beatles song.
One of their best.
Maxwells silver hamer
Ric Peters That thought crossed my mind when I heard it in 1985.
I hear more early Who, pre-Tommy, and the Kinks.
I thought exactly the same 👍🏻

Strawberries is my favorite. The last full length they did with Visconti (Evil Spirits) is their best since Phantasmagoria IMO.
Michael Graves agreed. I just love the Damned in its entirety, period.
This is one of my favourite songs of theirs. Dave looks so good in this video. Still looks good now too.
Oh, yes. He does, indeed. ;D
BEAUTIFUL MAN ALWAYS🖤
He's also a great person I met him in 97 was great to chat to

Spanish salsa? Salsa is not Spanish, it´s from South America...

LYRICS
Grimly fiendish
Plays the game that never pays
Sung out loud but never prayed
Grimly fiendish
Wears a coat that's black and long
He doesn't know that it's all wrong
Simply fiendish
A child caught in a grown up world
No lies convince the court
Once a week
I could be
Found on the faces all the frowns
Hide and seek
Tried so hard
To justify that crime could pay
Just for today
Bad lad, bad boy
(X8)
Let me get the story straight
You never gave me a break
It's a case of give and take
You didn't make me good you just painted me green
You made me part of your forgotten dreams
Grimly fiendish
We'll send you just where you belong
Where the children can't be found
Hide and seek
Tried so hard
And justify that crime could pay
Just for today
Bad lad, bad boy
(X8)
