I can really relate to this. Gossip was rampant in the community where I lived as a teenager. When people told lies about me, my parents blamed me, not because they believed the lies, but they were angry at me for being the subject of gossip. I was like, screw everyone, let them say what they like. But I was a kid, not a single mom in a coal mine town in the 1980's. I didn't have to deal with the effects of it on my kids like she does.

@@abcdabcdabcd317 I did . I went away to school and never looked back. Eventually my parents fessed up that the community sucked, and once my youngest sibling left for college, they moved out of the town too.

hate to say it but she was right to slap the hell out of him. Nowadays if your kid talks to you like that and you did what she did, you'd get your kids taken away.

It’s not so simple she lied to him the entire time about his father I know it’s a difficult discussion for her but making excuses for him can be a very bad thing

How she lost the Oscar in 2006 to Reese Witherspoon for a canny ‘impersonation’ of June Carter is one I will never understand... should’ve been her (Charlize) 2nd Academy Award

    • @kbanghart

Cuz Reese is excellent as well. Remember, many actors deserve to win every year, just because only one wins for the Oscars doesn't mean the others are any less.

Reese was excellent in that movie. Not all serious movies deserve the Oscar.

I'd have given it to Felicity Huffman for Transamerica.

Because the Oscars were promoting Harvey Weinstein and others abusing women and libeling victims and they do not promote movies about sexual abuse and harrassment by energy companies and teachers.

Calli Weininger Charlize Theron is a pig and a hypocrite. And the woman who plays Bobby Sharp's wife (Jacqueline Write) blocked me on Twitter when I asked her about the women harassing the men on set. m.ua-cam.com/video/1MvpIkznPmI/v-deo.html

Whew chile!!!!! She should have just let him go on with his friend. So disloyal and disrespectful and he had a good mother at that. Smh. Ain't it crazy how the lies of one evil narcissistic person can cause so much chaos in a innocent good hearted person's life. This is one of my favorite movies based on a true story she was so brave.

This movie was filmed in my home town in Minnesota when I was in 5th grade. I remember the hole elementary got to go watch them rehearsal during hockey scenes at our indoor rink. All of us sitting way back in the stands watching them act was pretty cool

I was in 5th grade as well when this movie was filmed. I was an extra, and it took a couple days to film these scenes. I wasn't actually in any of the movie, but it was cool to watch!

I originally auditioned for the roll of Bobby's wife. In the end, they switched me over to Stacy's Mom a few days before shooting, in NM. Wish I had the juicier one for my reel!

I agree. Her performance in Monster was great, but her performance in North Country was magnificent. What kind of annoys me is that this is such an underrated film. I have asked so many people if they have seen it and they all tell me that they have never even heard of it. This was such a powerful scene as well. My heart totally broke for her in this scene.

People like you are the reason people keep shelling out Oscar bait movies. I'm not saying this is one, but it seems to fit the same criteria

If the shock doesn't paralyse you, which is unlikely I grant you, the best thing a person who's being verbally abused in public can do, is to just walk. Away from the abuser or toward them, but whichever one it is, head held high and ideally laughing at them or drowning out their words with your own.

One of my favourite movies but i never understood this scene. in US parents can get arrested for letting their kids sleep in a stroller outside a shop, but it is totally okay to take other peoples home to stay for the night without talking to their parents...in this case i get the impression that the girls parents and her dont even know each other.
That is very strange to me. my son has his close friends and it would be absolutly fine if he wanted to stay overnight ,i expect them to start doing that very soon, but it would never happen that one of his friends just told me he was staying at their house tonight and even if it did and i ,of course, came to get my kid ,their parents would be just as mad as me.
Imagine how embarrassing it would be to have a kid staying and having their parents come knocking on the door because that kid just left without explenation or asking if it was okay..

Hey Movieclips, could you include the scene where Sean Bean's character has a heart to heart with that stupid son of hers? That was the best scene in the film.
P.S.: I forgot Woody Harrelson was in this too. It's been a long time. I was just watching Three Billboards Outside Edding, Missouri, my personal favorite of 2017. Good to see he rejoined McDormand for that one.
