- Riding various fish shapes has been a decades-long obsession for surfer-writer-filmmaker Andrew Kidman. He’s taken them on test tracks from the Outer Hebrides to La Jolla, Jeffreys Bay to Long Island. In the print edition of TSJ 24.1, Kidman writes about these travels and the value of fully exploring a single board design-noting the influence of the surfers he’s met along the way.
“As surfboard shapers continue to look for some kind of new design to spruik,” Kidman explains, “it’s worth noting that San Diego shapers like Skip Frye, Steve Lis, Larry Gephart, Steve Pendarvis, and their cohort have spent years honing this one design.”
In this short clip, Kidman strings together some archival footage of his Frye-shaped twin-fins being put through the motions.

Please more fish content in the Journal! Thank you!
I rode Lis fishes during the 70s, and at one point needed a new board and couldn't get one from the Green Room, so I had Skip Frye shape a fish along similar lines. It was a good board, but not in the same class as Stevie's stuff.
A Lis fish has an ability to turn square off the bottom and then project speed down the line that you have to experience to believe. They need a steep wave to do their best, but that's true for kneeboarding in general.
I had a single fin fish in the 70s, I seen a guy at point (P.B.)
ride one of these a long time ago when I lived there . Really cool . .
nice trippy 70s style surf video
Lucky enough to ride skip Frye's boards in San Diego late 70s! Aloha from Hawaii
Another unique shaper from the late 70's when I was living in Sunset Cliffs was John Belik
yes, I've seen his boards. Does he still shape?
Beautiful boards are perfect for northern NSW beachies.
Best board ever
Beautiful
different, i liked it
PMo purple tint ?
My favouritest colours ever.
This has gotta be the worst surf film I’ve ever seen. Just abstract clips of nothing. Not a single watchable wave
Great music horrible photography.
Ugliest boards ever
