I just started on a vaginal estrogen & my vagina hasn’t felt this healthy in years. I’ve only been on it a short while but notice a difference already. Also, my mom suffered for years with UTI’s & I never knew it was due to lack of estrogen. She lived on antibiotics for years & after a while, they stopped working. It breaks my heart to think there was help out there for her. She died two years ago & still had a UTI. Thank you for this information. I’m sharing this with all the females in my life.

Yes, isn't it outrageous that our mothers have suffered so much for very preventable things? I am very angry at this, I don't know if I can ever forgive or forget those doctors who didn't treat her. She lived a miserable menaupouse. Angry at what doctors are still doing with millions of women. They are still spreading LIES after LIES after LIES, scaring women with cancer instead of helping them losing excess weight or stop smoking, and other BIGGER causes of cancer. Shocking!

Today I have been changed forever by listening to this and other podcast relating to GSM. I have been suffering for 10 years with frequent UTIs and vaginal atrophy! I was prescribed vaginal estrogen years ago, but I was afraid of cancer risk and only used it very sporadically. The light has now come on.
I have an appointment tomorrow with OB/Gyn. Thanks!

I went through crazy urinary symptoms that would last a few months, go away, come back. I saw so many doctors beginning at age 44 for this problem and not one of the doctors suggested perimenopause as the cause, but it makes so much sense!

Thank you so much for this extremely educational and enlightning conversation between two brilliant women!
As I am listening here from Germany I'm so delighted that it is possible to learn about latest research both from the US and the UK (which thanks to Dr Newson's hard work starts to spread all over the planet).
I just wish I had found information just a few months earlier so that I would have been able to help my 83-year old mum with her health problems so much better and quicker! She died a year ago and I still miss her so much😢. This generation (who had to live as little children through WWII) suffered so much as teens, in pregnancy and childbirth, but also at the end of their lives with UTIs. I cannot make it up for my mum and my mother in law who died 2 years ago (always having bladder issues too 😢), but I can try to help spread the information in my circle of friends, among peri- & menopausal women and also my doctors.
And even though I have just found your podcast a few days ago, I have already been forwarding your very educational but also entertaining conversations around... THANK YOU so much again!🎉❤

So much time and money was wasted going back and forth between my GP and urologist for years! Still not much relief just using estradiol cream alone. Now I know What I suffer with is GSM and most notably the vaginal opening is actually bladder tissue. That’s a big deal! It explains so much.
This video was the Eureka moment for me! Thank you. Armed with info from two incredible female doctors, I now have hope again that I can get to not just some relief but “crosses “fingers” actual enjoyment again. 😊

Doctors, THANK YOU for this discussion. My 81-year-old Mom has been in the hospital twice for UTIs in the last few years. The first time required weeks of home physical and occupational therapy when she was released. I finally convinced her to make an appointment with my urogynecologist to ask about vaginal hormones. I know from personal experience you’re not exaggerating when you say this treatment can be lifesaving. I shudder to think what would have happened to my mom if I had not been with her to get her to the ER when these infections happened.

This all makes my blood boil!
My mom suffered terribly with GUSM, it caused her early death at 74.😢
Prevention of this has been my no1 reason for using HRT (I take the LOT- oestrogen spray, mirena coil, vagifem AND testogel.)
Menopause awareness is improving but this is the missing piece of the jigsaw…. I’m joining your mission to spread awareness.
Am running a series of posts on my Facebook support page this week on GUSM so 3000+ women on there will be getting this message.

OUCH! how could any sane person "hate" you , Dr. Newson? The nastiness online from hateful souls who are anonymous, or simply invisible, is somehow hurtful even though none of it is earned, and all of it bespeaks the turmoil and hate within the ones who spew it. It takes us a long time to accept this and to refuse to accept the responsibility for deserving any of it. I hope your drive courage, and skills to do so much good will overcome the costs of sometimes being the vulnerable target of those troubled souls. Bravo for your site, Dr. Rubin, on which you tell us about the one star an anonymous left you without any explanation. Your response was elegant, and I hope you were not too bruised! Thank you both, for this interview. I hope you will do more together, perhaps by focusing on specific topics within HRT.

You are absolutely right - UTIs can kill. I suddenly got very sick one morning with chills and high fever, maybe a slight pain in my lower belly, but nothing much. No urgency or frequency. After ibuprofen I still didn't feel well, so we went to the ER and my fever was only down to 103.6. I was in and out of awareness, I heard them say she is in or has sepsis and started thinking, this is it. I might die here. The pumped me full of every antibiotic known to man and I started to feel a bit better. Then they sent me home! Then called me back in in the early next morning because they'd discovered it was a UTI and wanted to focus treatment. I went back in and they kept me in the hospital. If I had just stayed home either of those times, I could have died of sepsis. The doctor asked me to please take the estriadol that had been prescribed to me in the past. I told her I was afraid of cancer. She said, "Your chances of another sneaky UTI killing you are a thousand times higher than you getting cancer from a .01% cream in your vagina."

Just started on vaginal estrogen @ 63. 10 years post menopause. For many years I have told my doctors that I was up 4-8 times a night to urinate. Not one doctor suggested vaginal estrogen. I had to ask my doctor for it after watching doctors on UA-cam. Crazy that is our healthcare in the US. After about a month I am to about 2 times a night up to urinate and I’m getting 5-6 hours of solid sleep. FYI I did try testosterone topical, not vaginal, about 11 years ago for vaginal pain during sex. It was awful. They never got it balanced and I gave up. Doctors never gave me different options.

Mirena is NOT progesterone. It is PROGESTINS. Synthetic chemicals that act very differently on the body to bioidentical progesterone. They are not the same.

GP in UK will not prescribe - you have to go private or get referred to a consultant and they’ll only prescribe for low libido.

My UK GP refused testosterone for my symptoms due it being for gender transitions were a priority. Maria Caulfield Minster for Women has called for submissions for further studies on testosterone and perhaps the other treatments you mention here (UK Parliament Oct speech 2023) - Could you work with her, prompt companies like Besins Healthcare or other Pharmas what do HRT products?

You may have to up your patch dosage of Estradiol, and take micronized progesterone orally or as an IUD. And possibly ALSO include a vaginal estradiol cream/gel.

So true that even the terminology used trivialises women's health issues. Also both the language and treatment are often focused solely around the ability to have penetrative intercourse with a male partner, not the holistic wellbeing of the woman.
