Thanks for sharing! Excellent job. Very helpful to have your experience as a reference. At 12:21 time …is there a cap on the open shift rod at the front end of the bus? (on the end you cleaned super well)
No, there is no cap that I'm aware of. I wonder if there was originally? It seems like a good idea to keep water and other things out of there. Good question!
Excellent video! I am hoping that my gear shift issues are the same and a simple fix like this, I have looked all over online for a similar issue and this is the first tutorial I have found! Thank you, liked and subscribed, look forward to more helpful VW bay window hints and tips.
Awesome, thank you for the great feedback. I'm glad you found the video helpful...and I hope you are able to get shifting improvement by replacing yours. I was just glad I didn't have to replace the rear one, as that involves dropping the engine. I figure I'll do that the next time I have to remove the engine for any reason. Best of luck with your project!
Thank you! I’ve just taken mine apart and ordered a new fwd shift rod bearing (the old one was pretty much gone). I would have continued procrastinating this project without your video.
Actually… an impact driver works excellent for stuck bolts. But use common sense and patience. Short, light bursts, both directions; loosen, tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen… gradually increase the force and time as you focus more on loosening the bolt. Bam! Mission accomplished
Just got my 74 Safré Custom Camper Riviera going. Going to be towing my 65 ghia with the van down to the beach to camp for a few days. Park the 74 van and set up the side tent and then cruise around town in the ghia.
Need to do this job on my '78. Gears are really hit-and-miss. All good though. As I was watching I was contemplating digging an inspection pit. :-) Think I'll be spending a bit of time under my Bay.
Here is a link to what Wolfsburg West carries. They carry high quality parts and I have been very happy with them. This one is for 74-79 models, but they carry others as well. Good luck! www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211711182
I just looked at my 72 bus and it doesn't look like your setup, can't see a hole for a coupler. Bentley manual says, on 72 models only, the flexible coupling is installed on a seperate extension rod that is bolted to the end of the rear shift rod.
Thanks for posting this. Very helpful 😊
No problem, happy to help!
Thanks a mil! I didn't have that bushing either. This explains why I was having a hard time going through the gears.
Makes all the difference in the world!

Very good details, thank you very much.
Of course, I'm happy to help out!

Nice...I hope it came out well! It's interesting how the old ones can just kind of fall apart...I couldn't even tell how long mine was gone.
Thank you for the video. You did a very good job with it. Quite helpful.
Awesome, thanks for the great feedback. I'm glad you appreciated the video!
Thanks! Another really helpful video!
Glad to hear it, I appreciate the feedback!
Says he is worried about broken bolts, then grabs an impact gun!!!!! LOL
Ha! Good point. Probably not the best choice of tools....

Excellent video, it was a big help. Thank you for taking the time to do that! :-)

Nice! That sounds like a good plan! How does the ghia tow behind the bus? Pretty good? Are you running a larger than stock motor to be able to tow?
Liked your video. I have found after dousing bolts with penetrating oil, use a 1/4” drive to listen.
Nice! I'll definitely try that next time...thanks for the advice!
Great Job! Just had this very issue with my 21 window last week. I have a mechanic fixing it for me but its nice to know exactly what is being done.
I hope it came out satisfactory! I'm super happy with the improvement it made with mine.
Just what I was after great little video very well explained top man keep up the great work. 😊👍🏻👌🏻
Mahalo nui! Thanks for the feedback!

I have a 74 too! Need as much collaboration and info as I can find. Thank you for the post!
Absolutely! Glad to help! I hope to have more videos for you at some point soon!
Great video, thank you. Can you share the part number if you still have it?
So sorry, I don't have that part number anymore. I did order this part through JBUGS, they had it in stock. Best of luck!
Anyway you could leave a link where you found the part. I’m looking on bud depot and all of the ones I think might be it do not have pictures

So from your salutations, what island are you on? My son is on Maui and would love to connect with other bus enthusiasts
Aloha! I live in California now...but I lived on the Big Island for years, Kona side. I hope to go back someday, but for now I'm on the mainland.
Thank you
Absolutely, glad to help!
forgot to say it helped. Thanks.
No worries! Glad it was helpful to you.

redo the video closer to the mic.
Yeah, sorry about the low volume level. I need to invest in a external microphone. It would be helpful with that!
Just turn the volume up man
