out of all the videos i've seen, this one is by far the most helpful and is so underrated! good tips and i'll try this when i do my next water change! (in two days)
I litterly have a 5 gallon tank and I don't want to do a water change while adding my aquarium salt. It will take Soo much time. So is there an easier way to reduce nitrate level or do u think I can add a little in my aquarium even tho I don't do a water change
I have a 55gallon tank. I added one tablespoon for every three gallon-roughly 16 tablespoon dissolved. Removed about 30 gallons and added the salt water and raised the temperature to 84 degrees. I hope this helps. I get nervous when I raise temperature in a tank but read that the raised heat would kill any bad stuff causes the fin rot and red dot on head. I will get back with you after a week.
My Betta (Mercury) is going through some bad fin rot at the moment and I keep seeing different ways people think work and it’s getting a little confusing, but your video go to the point and I’ll try this and see what happens. I think he’s on the same level of severity as your fish and in the same tank too
And make sure the water is warm! Betas are tropical fish, and if they don’t have a heater it can really stress them out. This was the main cause of my betas sickness. Nice video!
Nice aquarium! And thanks for helping me out with my bettas fin rot, he’s doing great now, his beautiful fins are even longer than before, I can’t thank you enough 😊
It's so hard for me to tell if my Betta's fins are growing back because he is a cellophane betta and his fins are already clear XD This was a really helpful video
saying fin rot can start off with the tips of fins looking tattered isn’t always the case! that can be new fin growth starting too! a lot of people get that confused with fin rot.
Thank you so much! This was the most informative video I’ve found so far, it confirmed all my research. You’re so underrated, you definitely deserve more attention💕
In addition, I would also try to remove the sharper decorations like your plastic plants and the sharp edged rock which can tear and cause damage to the fins. If using plastic plants, try to use the very soft smooth edged ones or use live plants, which are the best! Hope this is of some help also! :)
Julie Bublick these plastic plants were the very smooth kind, I made sure of that when I bought them because I had had Bettas before this and knew their fins are very delicate! I did remove this rock, and put in live plants because of my own interest in plants (I’m a succulent fan) if you watch some of my more recent videos I show the new rock house which is smooth and also all of the live plants!
I have a Halfmoon betta, and recently his fins have been looking torn, so I tried your method, a 50% water change, then dissolve some aquarium salt into water and add it. I hope this helps him, thank you for this video!
You should definitely keep an eye on him to see if anything in his tank is tearing his fins. Injured fins can get fin rot easier. Watch his fins when he swims around where does he go a lot? My betta swam near the water intake part of my filter a lot and his fins were drawn to it, it turned out that the strength of the intake was stronger than his fins so parts of the fins broke off when he swam to close to it. I just put a filter sponge over the intake, it seems to be working. I also read that fake plants and rocks can have edges that are sharp enough to tear fins. To test this I read that you take some silk stockings and rubbing them along the decorations and if they tear than they are too sharp and probably hurting your betta. Silk fake plants are a safer bet for a betta and I read that you can rub smooth jagged edges of fake rocks. Check all these things carefully.
Katelyn Kelly yeah i have done all of those things! At the time of this video that rock piece was still in there, i have taken it out now. However my betta came home from the pet store with finrot so i dont think it was the result of anything in my tank. In this video he still had some rot but had started making slow progress, within a couple weeks his fins were completely healed! And he is doing well today
Bridget Taylor I have the Aqueon submersible 10 watt mini heater and it’s keeps my 3.7 gallon tank at 79 in the winter, and about 82 in the summer. That is while my house is in between 68-73 degrees. I’ve had mine for about a year and it’s still working great!
I recently bought a male crown tail off petsmart. I put him in with my halfmoon double tail in my 6.5 gallon tank with a divider. What I didn’t notice though was the fin rot since he’s a really dark shade of red and purple-ish. but a couple of days go by and as I’m doing a water change I noticed how weird his fin was. Turns out I bought a fish with fin rot, now I’m scared he will contaminate my other fish. I’m buying an hospital tank as soon as I round up the money. Your video really was helpful, thank you.
George Pacific yeah I’ve found that a lot of pet store fish have fin rot starting at the pet store because they’re in cold bowls and stressed, so then when you bring them home they’re stressed more and the rot shows up. Good thing you noticed early! It should clear up
Betta Fix is more a vitamin than a medicine( it’s preventative). Good job with the aquarium salt. API also carries Fin & Body cure...General Cure.... these treat bacterial and fungal infections, from fin rot to parasites. I’ve learn to treat fish when I bring them home from the pet shop. Ich-X is another product I use.
jopalo31675 Betta Fix, melafix and pimafix- basically anything ending in fix is terrible - I found out from many credible sources that it can hurt your Bettas gills making it hard for them to breath. Don’t worry I tried all that in the beginning to. I haven’t had luck with salt for him, I have been giving him Metheleyne Blue baths and just did my second round of kenaplex I hope it works
Dominique Capri I hope all is well... thanks I never heard that. It’s good to know... I myself have never used any of the “fixes”... the first time my bettas ever had fin-rot was due to my new home being cold in the winter. The bettas I rescued were in small tanks with a small heater. I since moved them to a larger tank( after I treated them). They are fine now.
A good adjustable heater that never lets the water cool down and indian almond leaves did a great job in curing my male betta in about a week. He almost died to a short temperature fluctuation due to an underpowered heater in a 10g tank. Indian almond leaves are natural antibacterials that don't have any lasting negative effects on the fish's immune system. Yeah they tint the water over time a bit but bettas just love them.
API Melafix also works well, Ive used it for my angelfish and it cured it in three days. Aquarium salt is also a great choice! By the way great video, keep it up!
@@gabyolive5686 If u dont do ur waterchanges on time, that can cause it not to work, make sure u do ur waterchanges. Try doing atleast 50% waterchange and then use melafix, or the waterchange might fix the finrot
Well it has been a week since I wrote here about fin rot situation. I have four goldfish w/a pleco in a 55gallon. The goldfish seem brighter orange and are swimming. No one sitting in an area. I also have decided to feed flakes to my goldfish in the morning. In the evening they get lettuce or peas. I changed the water today-about 25 gallons and put 8 tablespoons of dissolved salt. Temperature is at 79 now. Still monitoring this and trying to keep the tank free of ammonia.
I’m a little confused because I believe my Betta has fin rot - although, his tank is clean, filtered, heated, and I do 25-30% water changes weekly. Oh, and the tank is 5 1/2 gallons. He seems healthy besides fin rot, eats well but I don’t think I’m over feeding him..? But I’m going to treat him now for fin rot and hopefully he gets better ❤️💖 thanks so much for the video!
Misty Skies hm yeah it’s hard to say considering your tank conditions sound pretty good, I’d say if it looks like a couple clean tears it might be from tank decor but if the fins have a more raggedy look it’s probably fin rot. You probably won’t have to treat for very long because it sounds like you take good care of your tank so if it is fin rot it should heal up quickly.
Amanda Lauf Yes, I do believe it’s fin rot. All his decorations are either soft or smooth and his fins look more raggedy than clean torn. And I’m really hoping he does heal up quickly! I appreciate the reply :)
There’s not too many doctors that will see fish, and if they do it would be expensive. If you wanted another opinion, your best bet would be putting him in his bowl and taking him to a pet stores fish dpt and asking them about it.
im a bit late but my betta has had fin rot for the last few months i tried everything it has slowed down a lot but its not getting better thank you for the info so now i am going to increase the dosage of salt for his treatment that he currently is in
i've been using salt in my 18L for 3 weeks now, the fin rot started getting better then the red dots returned. i'm at 2 tbsp now, i did a 25% water change yesterday and added IAL and stress coat. the red dot is gone but his tail looks shorter, if by tomorrow nothing changes i'm gonna use fin&body cure and see what happens :( thank you for this video, i wish our bettas a long healthy life.
Hi! Thank you so much for this video, it’s really helpful and I’m about to try this for my betta. So, you do a 100% water change and add the appropriate level of aquarium salt. Then the next day you do a 50% change and add the appropriate level to salt. And then you leave it for ten days? Or you keep changing out 50% every day for the ten days? Thanks so much! I’m worried for my little guy :/
You will keep changing it out 50% each day for 10 days! Clean warm water is the best healer for fin rot. Best wishes! I hope this works for your little guy!
This was really helpful but I have a couple questions. What do you do after the 50% water change on the second day or am I missing it? You said you shouldn't do the salt in the water for over 10 days. Are you suppose to be doing 50% water changes every day through days 10 and then do a complete water change?
Shay_1961 Yes! Yeah 50% each day until day 10, then do a complete water change, making sure the temperature is the same, and your filter media is either cycled, or if you don’t cycle your tank that the filter media is fresh/clean according to he manufacturer’s recommendations for changing it out (I.e. change the carbon filter once a month)
I need some help a few days ago my Betta was living in a 1 gallon bowl and noticed he basically had no tail at all so I went out to the store and bought him a 5 gallon tank for him along with a new plant and rocks it’s day 3 with the new tank hoping that his tail will grow back but so fare nothing he is happy and swims fin just no fluff like Bettas should have I’m concerned and don’t know what to do
LpsgAlAxY pup good choice on getting the 5 gallon for him! Do you have a filter and a heater? Those are both really important, they’ll keep the water clean and warm which will help fin regrowth. Also, API Stress Coat is a great helper in fun regrowth because it creates a slime coat in the water. Don’t be alarmed that the fins haven’t started growing back yet, it’s a slow process, you probably won’t start seeing new tissue until it’s been about a week. As long as he’s not getting worse, you’re doing something right! :)
My Betta Squirt so my Betta died yesterday sadly 😭😔 and I don’t know what caused it he stopped eating and started swimming frantically at the top of the surface than float down to the bitten and stay their for the whole day pls if you know what caused it pls tell me because I don’t want it to happen to the new Betta I’m gonna get 😭😭
LpsgAlAxY pup I am so sorry to hear that! 😔 that sounds like ammonia poisoning, they will swim around frantically and dart when that happens, and eventually they basically suffocate or get septic shock because of the high ammonia levels. Before getting a new Betta, I suggest doing some reading on the nitrite cycle and cycling a tank because that will make sure you have stable water conditions when you put the new betta in. A quality filter and heater are key, Bettas, or any fish for that matter, will definitely not live long without them and the proper water conditions. I hope this helps and I hope that your next betta will live a long happy life!!!
GH0ST66661 I am not familiar with Betta Revive, it honestly depends on how long the medication is active in the water how often you’ll change the water and redose. Sorry I don’t have an answer for that one!
I have my betta in a 5 gal tank with moderate fin rot. So if I had 1.5 tbspn into his tank, and do a 20% water change everyday for the 10 days do I just add back in the the small portion of salt I took out? Or do you only recommend 50% changes? And I do this for 10 days straight correct? What are the first signs of improvement to look out for and how many days did it take to see improvement? Thanks so much for ur video!
My betta has fin rot and I am new to this so I have been doing a lot of research on how to treat this. My question is... So on day 1 you did a complete water change with full amount of aquarium salt(fully dissolved) and conditioner (my tank is 2.5 gal) then on days 2-10 you do a 50% water change adding = amount of dissolved salt and conditioner, is this correct? Thank you for this video, fingers crossed my Ezra will health well! I have also ordered indian almond leaves.
How is she doing? Please get her atleast 5 gallon tank , filter ,heater and weekly water changes atleast, I prefer 2 times a week because I've have 5 gallon tank.
hi I have a question. if the fin rot comes back after using Stresscoat and aquarium salt, should I resort to an antibiotic or should I retry the aquarium salt?
Charlie I did this a year ago, so if I remember correctly I believe I did alternating 50% and 100% water changes...because sometimes 100% every day can be too stressful for them
I've done everything. I've changed the whole tank and am using the salt and my Ross is just getting worse. I don't even know how he keeps hanging on. I'm heartbroken because I don't know what eles to do.
I’m sorry to hear that. My betta went through a bout that wasn’t curing up with salt, so I then did a Kanaplex treatment. I have a video on this as well. That being said, not all fish will be cured by either treatment. Your fish may have a different disease or something going on internally. I would encourage you to keep researching, search the online fishkeeping forums, that is what helped me figure out how to treat my fish the best I could. I hope your fish gets better soon! Is your tank heated to at least 78 degrees? Is your betta pineconed at all? This is bloating where the scales protrude outwards, and is the first sign of Dropsy.
I use spring water for my betta. He is now suffer from fin rot. I am now using aquarium salt but it doesn't seem to be working. Can I still us the stress coat in his tank, along with the salt?
Teena Bynum It will probably take at least a week before you start to see any fin regrowth. The important thing is that the rot isn’t getting any worse, that it’s not progressing. Do you have a filter and a heater? Do you treat the water with anything like Stability or Quick Start or any type of beneficial bacteria additive like that? Adding one of those things is very important because it keeps harmful bacteria in check, and reduces the chances of fin rot in the first place.
@@amandalauf5113 yes I have a heater and filter. The people at the pet store said that I don't need to add any kind of treatment because I used spring water. I do check the water quality often and everything is fine. So I'm not sure why he have fin rot. He literally stays at the bottom of the tank and he is not as active like he use to be.
Caroline Yes, but 10 days regardless of it has stopped or not. More than 10 days of that amount of salt for a betta can damage their kidneys. I saw the rot stop after a few days, and regrowth started at the end of the 10 days, but this will be somewhat different for each fish depending on how bad the rot is.
My fish is already improving after doing this for one day- I tried everything else and his tail just kept shrinking but after using the salts it stopped. Thank you so much again for making this video ❤️
Adelaide Bea So sorry to hear that. Sometimes the bacteria is a resistant kind and medication is needed. I have another video about using Seachem Kanaplex for fin rot, go check that out. It worked for me and generally works for a lot of people. Kanaplex is on Amazon for $10 and there are directions on the packaging on how to use it, as well as many UA-cam videos about it. Good luck!
Hi amanda, my betta fish got a fin rot and its almost half of the tail already taken i tried beta fix but it didn’t work..! I will try salt but how many days should i changed water.? Anyway, my tanks size is 2 galloon. Thank you. Pls reply
Hello! I just got a betta fish 5 days ago and I just now noticed his fins aren’t flared out like your Bettas fins are ,my betta Slinky’s fins look torn and they aren’t full, today it looks like he’s loosing a bit of color and the bottom tips of his fins have a little bit of white at the end and I’m wondering if this is fish rot? He’s been pretty active and he’s currently in a 1 gallon tank and I’m gonna move him to a 5 gallon tank in a few days and I’m wondering if I should do the treatment in his one gallon tank or do it in his new tank? This is my first betta and I wanna make sure he’s happy and healthy!:) Other than the fin rot he seems pretty happy
So since you said his fins look like theyre torn, but he is still active and acting normally, i would say its probably the very beginning of fin rot. It is probably a result of him being stressed from going from his little bowl that he lived in at the pet store, to a new tank with new water conditions. What I would suggest before starting a salt treatment would be seeing if clean, warm water will do the trick. So I would do a complete water change of your 1 gallon now, and then move him into the 5 gallon asap with a proper filter, heater, Stress Coat, and API Quick Start. The filter will help cut down ammonia, Stress Coat will coat his fins and help to repair them, and the Quick Start is live benficial bacteria to start the nitrogen cycle, and make sure that bad bacteria dont take over the tank. Watch him for a couple days after that and see if his condition improves. If it doesnt, then I would move him back into the 1 gallon for the salt treatment (its easier to treat in a smaller tank). The reason im not suggesting the salt treatment right away is because sometimes minor fin rot is simply a result of the fish being stressed and it will resolve on its own with clean, warm water. See how it goes and dont be afraid to ask more questions!
It is the Imagitarium 3.7 gallon from Petco. It originally had a black separator wall for filtration but it wasn’t working very well so I took it out, and ended working out nice because it made more room for my betta to swim around in
Roblox with Gaming girl yes you can, a small hang on the back filter will do just fine for a half gallon tank. You will have to do some research as far as which kind to buy, there’s tons!
I bought a Betta fish 3 months ago and I didn’t think I needed a filter but watching a lot of Betta fish videos I am going to use the one I have but I feel like the current is way to strong I have the 5 gallon top fin glass fish aquarium and I don’t know how to make the current not as strong I also think he has fin rot, at the beginning I maybe thought he was just supposed to be like that bus his fins look like someone cut them into small pieces I am going to buy a heater tomorrow and some aquarium salt, any way I can make the current not as strong? And any tips u can give me?
Emilia R the heater will definitely help! Honestly the rot could just be because of stress and being in cool temperature water. I have a makeshift “baffle” on my filter (not the one pictured in this video, I now have a Fluval one), my baffle is a filter sponge that I put in the outtake so that the water flow isn’t so strong coming out. If you google filter baffles, many people come up with makeshift ones, you’ll be able to find one that works for your setup.
Emilia R I would just wait and see what the clean warm water will do for him. Do a water change and tank clean (algae, etc), put in the filter and heater, and he might just perk up and the rot will probably stop. I’d say wait a week after you all of that before you start a salt treatment. If a few days go by and the rot progresses really quickly, he stops eating, or any other abnormal behavior/symptoms happen, then start the salt even if a week hasn’t gone by.
Question how often do the water change with salt. I been doing 30 or 50 water change every 3 days with salt and every 3 or 4 weeks a 80 percent with salt. I just get a cup put there 20 % water from tank water aside in a bowl. I have betta in another bowl with its water. I Clean out tank completely. Clean the rocks , house plants.. then replace clean water with the water condition with salt back into the tank , then I add the 20% that I had on the side , lastlythe betta back. Its been two weeks doing this. Am I doing this correctly? ... if yes, fin rot is still there. He only has it on the tips. But don't want it to spread even more. How long before we will see results? P.s.. I think he is happy because always making bubbles nest by his heater.
L Mendoza that sounds like a great routine you have been doing for your betta! You should definitely start cutting back on the salt now a lot, and completely phase it out within the next week because Bettas can get organ damage from being in salt water for too long as they are not saltwater fish. There’s been research done that they can supposedly survive in brackish water, but that would be in the wild, not from a pet store. Now that the rot is only on the tips, you should start seeing some fun regrowth as long as you keep the water clean and warm. Fin regrowth is slow, only a little bit every week but they will grow back!! I have a video showing my Bettas complete recovery from fin rot if you would like to see how his fins regrew.
@@amandalauf5113 So, if I should start cutting back on the salt . Do I do it in the water change? Or in the completely 80 % water change? Like I said , it's been doing this with the salt treatment for two weeks and haven't seen change at all. Or I don't know maybe Im not adding enough salt?🤔 Because I'm afraid to harm betta and plants🤔 I do a 1/4 teaspoon of salt on the 80% water change and 1/8 teaspoon of the 30% water change because we have a 1 gallon tank at this moment working on getting him a bigger tank.
L Mendoza cut back in both the every 3 day changes and the 80% changes. Regardless of how much salt you’ve been putting in, it’s been 2 weeks and Bettas need a break before another salt treatment. Honestly he could be somewhat stressed from the water changes and salt, salt treatment isn’t a one size fits all treatment, every fish will react differently. He could also be stressed by something else in the water parameters, like high ammonia and nitrites, or pH, or if the temperature isn’t warm enough (should be 78-82). Clean and warm water is key to getting rid of fin rot.
There was a clear glass lid on this tank! I no longer have this tank, but I always have tanks with glass lids as some bettas do try to jump out sometimes
hey my Betta Fish has fin rot and I started treating him with medication, but this morning I went to feed him and he had a chunk missing from his tail, way bigger than the other rotting parts, the chunk that's missing is almost to his body, what should I do? im gonna keep medicating, but what if he gets body rot? I'm using stress guard and an air pump, its heated at 79 and filtered, he has a silk plant, two live plants and a coconut hideout.
no_name_one_day what medication are you using? It needs to be one that targets gram negative bacteria because that is the most common bacteria responsible for fin rot. Also, did you do a water change before you started medicating?
@@amandalauf5113 I did 50 % water changes for three days, it kept getting worse, so then I started medication, which is tetra life guard and im using api stress coat (Petsmart had no variety at all). before medicating I tried aquarium salt and it didn't help (Dissolved) . (also thanks for replying quickly) Update: on the bottom/ sort of middle section of his tail I see regrowth, but on the top its still rotting, and there's like a very light white patch on his body, but I don't think its body rot cos he still has a lot of his tail... also he's eating fine and being very active and responsive when I come near the tank. btw pH it at 7.5. thank you!
no_name_one_day okay! So it’ll take at least a week to see some progress, it’s a slow progressing rot and regrowth, so it’s good you’re starting to see some regrowth already and that he’s still active and eating normally! The white patch in his body, what does it look like? I ask because oftentimes fin rot can be accompanied by a fungal infection called Ich as well
Your heater shouldn't be submurged fully in this is a total different video but there is a minimum water line on the heater your heater will not work if it's wet on the inside
matthew LeBlanc This particular heater had directions to fully submerge it. It has worked ever since I installed it and continues to work. It’s an Aqueon 10W.
So did you add salt everyday? Or did you just add salt when you did water changes? When the ten days are up did you do a really big water change, Like 90% to get the salt out. I’ve had my fish for 3 years but this is the first time he has gotten fin rot so I’m unsure. Thank you!!
TJ Definitely do not add salt every day! Salt does not evaporate with water, so even if some of your tank water evaporates the same amount of salt you first put in will still be in the water. Only add more salt when you do water changes and you are able to measure the amount of water and salt that you took out. At the end of the ten days I’d say see how he’s doing...maybe do a 50% water change first (without adding more salt because you’re ending the treatment) and continue to do 50% changes. Generally any larger percentage than that is too stressful on a fish.
gabymarki Generally speaking yes, I now have live plants and have used salt and they’ve been fine, but I know that some plants are sensitive to salt so I would check and see if your plants are some of those
What is battyrat? I just got my beta less than 2 weeks ago and He does have something black on the tip of his tail , I believe I have been feeding him too much also but I will use the method with salt and stress coat first.
@@amandalauf5113 I am thinking not because it is only the very tip of his tail. I have a 3.5 gallon topfin tank and did a 100% water change with treated water to see if that will help , He is all red my grandson named him Blaze . I am taking daily snapshots with my phone so I can document.
I have a betta fish named Gus and I also had a really bad filter and just changed it a couple days ago, and Gus got fin rot which was really scary for me considering I’ve never had him get sick before, and I was just wondering, when you said to make sure you only add the amount of salt you took out muring the partial water change, how much is that? Do I just out half of what I put before?
Hannah Marshall So that means that if for example you put in 4 tablespoons of salt for your tank and you did a 50% water change, that means you removed 2 tablespoons of salt from the tank. So then you would mix 2 tablespoons into the new water, and put that into the tank bringing your total amount of salt back up to 4 tablespoons. Depending on the gallon size of your tank you might have to do some fractions math, but overall you just want to get as close as you can to the right amount.
I just bought aquarium salt and I'm kind of scared to put it in because inlove my fish and what if I overdose and the salt dries out all the water and let my fish suffocate?? I know the right thing is to put it in but I'm just a little scared, I eventually will put it in and I heard you used bettafix? Well everything with the name 'fix' in it has oil and if you put oil in your tank, your betta will eventually suffocate because they need to breath the air and oil covers the air completely
Vampgirl Playz You just have to be confident in your math that you mixed in the right amount, and that you replace only the amount that you removed after each water change. Yes I did use Bettafix for a small amount of time, and it had no effect at all on my betta, good or bad. Some really experienced fish keepers use Melafix on occasion in small controlled amounts as it can be beneficial in some circumstances. The main thing to focus on when treating any kind of disease in a fish is that you are confident in what you think the disease is before you start treatment. Don’t do a “catch all” treatment if you’re not sure what is wrong with your fish. If you know your fish has fin rot, there are a lot of options that fish keepers use to combat it, and this is just one of them. As long as you follow the directions and dosing for the salt on the box, dissolve the salt completely before adding it into the tank, and only replace the amount of salt that you removed after each water change, you won’t have to worry about overdosing. Good luck! 😊
I agree with that if you are using chlorinated treated tap water. I am not. I have completely untreated straight from the ground well water from a private well. I’ve changed the water several times and even rinsed out my filter media using my well water and nothing happens to my small tank ecosystem. But I definitely would not do all of that if I had tap/city water.
Your fish looks like my fish. Plastic plants are not suggested for sure. I see the decor in your tank looks rough, please test it. As for the aquarium salt, it dehydrates the bacteria. You don’t need to change the salt, it doesn’t get weaker, it keeps working in the water. If you have to do a water change, then you add salt for the amount of water you extracted.
This video is from 2-3 years ago. I no longer have plastic plants as I wanted to transition to live plants for aquascaping, but after my betta’s fins healed from the rot, he lived happily with plastic plants and no further tears for the rest of his life. And yes, I am aware of how to change the salt, as I did this whole video on it and explained how to replace salt with water changes.
Michaela Banana From what I researched salt baths aren’t recommended unless your betta isn’t eating or is pineconed or another serious condition...salt baths are very stressful for them.
Thanks!! It’s an Imagitarium 3.7 gallon from Petco. Originally it had a black wall in the back as a filtration compartment but it wasn’t working very well so I took it out.
GH0ST66661 Do not keep adding salt, no multiple doses in the same water!!!! You have to do a water change first, then you re-add the amount of salt that you just removed. For example, if you do a 50% water change, when you put in the new water, you’ll dose that water with 50% of the original salt dose.
The Crafty Slime Girl You took out 50% of the salt you put in 😀 the salt doesn’t evaporate, it remains in the water. So when you go to add back the 50% of water (new water) you will put in 50% of the original salt dose for your tank. So you have to replace what you took out.
Amanda, so the first time i put in the salt. i putted in 1/2 of the salt! so do you mean i add half of 1/2 salt to the tank, the next time i do a 50 percent water change?? Please answer ASAP😀Thank you very much!
folks over at reddit/r/bettafish can help out in detail on bettas is anyone has any other questions about bettas that they cant answer! They helped me with live plants.
Kayley Boo You need to dissolve the salt in a separate container of water. Then once it is completely dissolved, you put that water into the tank (if the fish is in during this part that is okay) The granules of salt will chemically burn the fish so the salt needs to be completely dissolved before you add that water into the tank.
well depending on the severity of the fish you can use 1-2tsp do 50% water changes every day for 10 days then stop for a few days then start again. keep going until full recovery which usually takes 2.5 months.
This one is from Petco. It is the 3.7 gallon Imagitarium tank. Originally it did have the back filter compartments, but I hated them so I had my boyfriend use a utility blade to remove them. The glue wasn’t hard at all, so you could pull off the plastic pieces and then use the blade to remove the rest of the glue from the glass. The tank doesn’t come with a hang on the back filter, so the one in the video is a Tetra Whisper, but now I have the smallest Fluval hang on the back. It works great, much better than the Tetra Whisper.
GH0ST66661 Joel Allgeier I got it at Petco, its the Imagitarium 3.7 gallon, however I ripped out the separator that it came with (it originally has a back of the tank filtration compartment) because I found that their filtration design wasn't working. So I got a Tetra Whisper filter (the one shown in the video at the time I made the video) and it works much better than the pump/filter system the tank came with. A couple months ago the air pump died, but it lasted over a year which is pretty good for a small filter like that. Now I have a Fluval hang on the back filter. I also painted the back of the tank black, which I do in one of my other videos.
Sorry to comment again haha so a few of my Bettas have fin rot, and so do I need to to daily 100% water changes? As well as do I need to turn the filter off and heaters? Also with the stress coat, I have a 2 gallon, how much would I put in for that?
Are all of the bettas in the same tank? (Females) if so then yes 100% each day because multiple fish make more waste than one. If not, then no, alternate every other day between 100% and 50%. From what i saw 100% every day was too stressful for my betta, so i started alternating and that worked. No!!!! Dont turn off the filter and heaters!! Keep those going because theyre helping keep the water warm and clean which keeps the betta comfortable. It says on the back of the bottle that you do 1 mL per 5 gallons. If you were not using it to repair fins: 0.5 mL (5 ÷2=2.5 which is close enough to 2 gallons) for Stress Coat its okay if youre not completely exact. Using it to repair fins: 1 mL (it says on the back to double your normal dose if youre using it to repair fins) Keep in mind youre going to have to do some math because you need to replace the amount of stress coat that you took out each time you do a water change. So for 100% changes, you would put in 1 mL. For 50% changes, you would put in 0.5 mL. 1 mL is the smallest circle in the cap.
Amanda Lauf hey! If I’m doing a 50% water change? Do I need to add in more salt? Bc for the salt ive mixed it in a separate tiny bowl so the salt is already dissolved once I put it in the water. When I do the 50% change, doesn’t it take out the salted water?
@@ashtontruelove yes! Yeah for the amount of water you take out, you have to replace that lost salt when you add the new amount of water. So since you took out 50% of the water (50% of the salt) you have to replace 50% of the salt when you add the new water. And yes dissolve it first before you put it in the tank as the salt crystals can give the fish a chemical burn if theyre not fully dissolved.
I just bought the salt today but I'm still kinda confused. do I do the treatment in the same tank she's in already, or put her in a separate one solely for the treatment? and if I keep her in the same tank should I clean it completely and do 100% water change to put in the treatment, and from there switch from 50 to 100 ???
Marcella Cuorvo So ideally (according to professional people who are very involved in aquatics) you would put your betta in a “quarantine” tank (I know, ironic considering the reality of our world right now .) That would be the ideal case so that you wouldn’t kill the cycled tank’s good bacteria. However, this treatment will still work if you don’t have a quarantine tank. Before starting treatment, yes do a full clean and water change, you want to start fresh.
Amanda Lauf Amanda Lauf I know haha that's what I keep thinking everytime I hear they need to be put in quarantine lol. The tank I have right now is 2.5 gallons, and the other only one I have is a tiny one from a Betta starter kit from years ago. this is why I wanted to keep her in the tank she's in right now since the other one wouldn't be comfy. i'm going to clean the tank right now, should I take everything in it outside (the fake plants, gravel and decor) and just put her in with just the water heater and filter? also I bought moss balls and live plants, should those go in when the treatment is done?
Marcella Cuorvo Yeah I agree that the 2.5 gallon would be best! It’s up to you whether or not you’d like to keep the fake plants, gravel, and decor in during treatment or not....what I did was clean everything including the gravel thoroughly and put them back in for the treatment. I have heard that bettas know their familiar surroundings, so it might be less stressful for them if their normal decor is in there. I would go ahead and put the live plants and moss balls in when you start the treatment, live plants act as natural filters and will help a lot in keeping the water clean! I have all live plants in my tank now and it has made a huge difference in the water quality.
Amanda Lauf okay thank you so much this has helped a lot!!!! I'm going to do all that right now, I hope her fins get better they were so pretty when I got her :(
Emily Underwood With each water change you will replace the amount of stress cost lost in that water change. Directions for amount is on the back of the bottle.
My betta fish tail had very serious fin rot and i dont know what to do! I tried salt! Also how much salt should I add to a 0.5 gallon tank😆😃Thanks. Will a betta fish die if it has very bad fin rot?
Editing hacks With TCSG Bettas can die if the rot progresses to the body and becomes body rot. As long as it stays isolated to the fins it should be okay. To figure out the correct dosage, read the directions on the back of the salt container and do the math for your gallons. For example, if it said “10 tablespoons per 10 gallons “ that would mean you dose 1 tablespoon per gallon. In your case, that would mean 1/2 tablespoon. That is just an example. Read the dosage on the container that you have.
Editing hacks With TCSG I have 4 Bettas and a 30 gallon tank with different fish and unfortunately 9 months ago when getting into the hobby petsmart told me nothing about cycling a tank so it’s been a major process for me. Anyways I learned that Bettas are pretty much doomed from birth from the way their shipped here, kept in tiny cups and then people all over are keeping them in these tiny tanks. I have 2 males which are much bigger then my 2 females and I have them each in 10 gallon tanks and my tiny females are both in gallons just to give you an example. I have an aqua clear filter , their one of the best in my opinion and a heater where I control the temp and keep it around 82... also get the api master test kit - unfortunately they don’t include the LIQUID test kit for KH but get that’s because it’s very important to make sure you PH is minimum 7 and stays there so checking your KH will assure you don’t have fluctuations in your PH will can also cause fin rot / tear. My betta had gotten some fun rot when I first got him and I tried everything and nothing worked until I found api general cure and api fin and body - AMAZING products. I would use seachem prime for conditioner begquse not only does it act as a conditioner but it also locks up ammonia nitrites and nitrates so if you want to switch your guy to a bigger tank and do a fish in cycle check out this forum this guy saved my life. fishlab.com and he explains how to do fish in cycle but it’s simple. You basically only need the master kit and prime. Test everyday until you see ammonia which won’t be long. Dose with prime everyday and keep testing until ammo reaches 2ppm in which you will do a 50% water change keep using prime and how test for ammo and nitrites once nitrites are present your going to add the 2 together to get your prime dose (for example .50ppm ammo and 2ppm nitrites that’s 2.50ppm so you would put in the equivalent of 2 dosages of prime: once ammo and nitrites reach 4ppm 50% water change keep dosing and test for nitrates. Once they appear your nearing the end and you should keep testing for about a week to make sure ammo and nitrites are at 0. But prime is your best friend. I’ve have my betta Timmy 9 months and he’s the healthiest boy ever!!! Let me know if you have any questions
Moua I would suggest researching that, but I’m thinking it probably would not be safe. Any type of marine/sea salt is harmful to freshwater fish. Aquarium Salt is formulated differently and is a completely different type of salt that is safe for freshwater fish.
out of all the videos i've seen, this one is by far the most helpful and is so underrated! good tips and i'll try this when i do my next water change! (in two days)
Thank you!!! Yeah i tried to include the most info that i could, especially things that i had researched but that werent in other peoples videos
Amanda Lauf do you think that 4 teaspoons for 2.5 gallons is good?
Amanda Lauf my fish’s fin rot looks a little worse than the fish in this vid btw
I’ve been using the aquarium salt for about 2 weeks now and I’m seeing tissue growth. Thanks!
Can I ask you how much you put into the tank? And for how long? Thanks.
Ben Dover 5 Gal tank 2 tbsp every water change he’s fully healed after 2.5 months
@@jailanrayvon434 Okay thank you. Sorry another question when do you change the water? Every week other day just curious. Thanks.
I think he’s on the same level of severity as your fish and in the same tank too
Okay! Yeah give it a try, theres definitely many different ways to treat...i was confused at first too, its trial and error. Let me know how it goes!
Just_Abbey_JFC im sure stress coat will halp kinda and remove some stress
What tank do you have?
Did he recover?
And make sure the water is warm! Betas are tropical fish, and if they don’t have a heater it can really stress them out. This was the main cause of my betas sickness. Nice video!
Yeah i had a heater from day 1 that ive had him, i always keep it at 80
Nice aquarium! And thanks for helping me out with my bettas fin rot, he’s doing great now, his beautiful fins are even longer than before, I can’t thank you enough 😊
ΠΔΔJ MCCUΣ that’s great to hear!!! ☺️
It's so hard for me to tell if my Betta's fins are growing back because he is a cellophane betta and his fins are already clear XD This was a really helpful video
I just uploaded a video showing my Betta's full recovery from fin rot if anyone would like to see how the fins look when they've grown back!
Thank you for the info! You're saving fish all over the world! 😀
That tank is SO clean!
saying fin rot can start off with the tips of fins looking tattered isn’t always the case! that can be new fin growth starting too! a lot of people get that confused with fin rot.
Keep me updated on how that goes! Mine's fins are brown and torn and definitely needs some help. I wanna see how this works lol
My new beta (Comet) is going through some fin rot at the moment and I want to get him a heater to help with that. Any recommendations?
Bridget Taylor I have the Aqueon submersible 10 watt mini heater and it’s keeps my 3.7 gallon tank at 79 in the winter, and about 82 in the summer. That is while my house is in between 68-73 degrees. I’ve had mine for about a year and it’s still working great!
Amanda Lauf ok thank you!
Bettas should ALWAYS have heaters!
What does product code means like api stress coat product codes are 85A, 85B, 85C. What does A, B , c mean .
API Melafix also works well, Ive used it for my angelfish and it cured it in three days. Aquarium salt is also a great choice!
By the way great video, keep it up!
ive been using Melafix for a couple months and it hasnt helped at all. I dont know what to do.
@@gabyolive5686 If u dont do ur waterchanges on time, that can cause it not to work, make sure u do ur waterchanges. Try doing atleast 50% waterchange and then use melafix, or the waterchange might fix the finrot
@@caddyguy5503 okay i will try. Thank you!
Do you put the salt in every day within those 10 days? And also this helped me a lot thank you so much!!. Also do I change the water every day???
Misty Skies be sure t ask dococotrs abot the fin rot
There’s not too many doctors that will see fish, and if they do it would be expensive. If you wanted another opinion, your best bet would be putting him in his bowl and taking him to a pet stores fish dpt and asking them about it.
What a beautiful aquarium decoration :)
im a bit late but my betta has had fin rot for the last few months i tried everything it has slowed down a lot but its not getting better thank you for the info so now i am going to increase the dosage of salt for his treatment that he currently is in
I was impressed with this video presentation and the information that was given. Thank you, Amanda Lauf.
i've been using salt in my 18L for 3 weeks now, the fin rot started getting better then the red dots returned. i'm at 2 tbsp now, i did a 25% water change yesterday and added IAL and stress coat. the red dot is gone but his tail looks shorter, if by tomorrow nothing changes i'm gonna use fin&body cure and see what happens :( thank you for this video, i wish our bettas a long healthy life.
update?
Hey very informative video. Trying this out with my betta. Can you please provide the details of the filter amd pump you are using.
@@amandalauf5113 thank you! And after the 10 days do I not use any salt going forward?
@@dorothyzittel3285 Correct! From what I’ve read, using salt for over 2 weeks is damaging to betta’s kidneys.
How many times do you add the aquarium salt in the tank? Is it just once? Someone plz help
What is the name of your filter?
Were you adding in new salt everyday for the 10 days or just the first two
I have a 5 gallon tank so if I’m supposed to do 2 tsps for every gallon would that mean that I would do 9 tsps ??
How often were you doing water changes during this process and were they all 50% changes?
100% water change? Didnt that crash your cycle?
My Betta Squirt ok thx 😊
My Betta Squirt thx so much I will forever miss squiggles my Betta
My betta is in a 1 gal in his hospital tank. Do I keep adding a full dose of betta revive? Or do I empty the tank then re dose? Thanks
GH0ST66661 I am not familiar with Betta Revive, it honestly depends on how long the medication is active in the water how often you’ll change the water and redose. Sorry I don’t have an answer for that one!
Amanda Lauf ok how about the salt. Did you just keep adding it or did you do water changes then add another full dose? Thanks so much.
If I only have the salt is it okay?
hi I have a question. if the fin rot comes back after using Stresscoat and aquarium salt, should I resort to an antibiotic or should I retry the aquarium salt?
How often do I do water changes?
I really love your tank. where did you get it?
Do you have any guesses as to what went wrong?
Are you doing the 50% water change every day??
Charlie I did this a year ago, so if I remember correctly I believe I did alternating 50% and 100% water changes...because sometimes 100% every day can be too stressful for them
What does it mean when the tips of his fins are white ? His fins are shredded looking but im not sure what the white tips mean
White tips on the fins indicate fin rot
I love your betta’s tank decorations. Where did you get them? Also are the plants silk?
After the 10 days do you do a 100% water change
Awesome video! My bettas fins are brown and don't look full of color and look unhealthy. Would this be fin rot?
I use spring water for my betta. He is now suffer from fin rot. I am now using aquarium salt but it doesn't seem to be working. Can I still us the stress coat in his tank, along with the salt?
How long have you been using the salt?
And yes you can use stress coat at the same time
@@amandalauf5113 4 days
Teena Bynum It will probably take at least a week before you start to see any fin regrowth. The important thing is that the rot isn’t getting any worse, that it’s not progressing.
Do you have a filter and a heater? Do you treat the water with anything like Stability or Quick Start or any type of beneficial bacteria additive like that? Adding one of those things is very important because it keeps harmful bacteria in check, and reduces the chances of fin rot in the first place.
Ok. Thank you
@@amandalauf5113 yes I have a heater and filter. The people at the pet store said that I don't need to add any kind of treatment because I used spring water. I do check the water quality often and everything is fine. So I'm not sure why he have fin rot. He literally stays at the bottom of the tank and he is not as active like he use to be.
What are the doses of aquarium salt for each severity level?
Is it necessary to change the water every day for the next ten days?
So you just continuously changed the water every day 50% and added back the salt for 10 days until it stopped?
Good luck!
How many rounds did you do? And how much did you space them out
Hi amanda, my betta fish got a fin rot and its almost half of the tail already taken i tried beta fix but it didn’t work..!
Amanda Lauf Okay thank you I will move him to the new tank asap!
I really like that tank! What tank is it?
It is the Imagitarium 3.7 gallon from Petco. It originally had a black separator wall for filtration but it wasn’t working very well so I took it out, and ended working out nice because it made more room for my betta to swim around in
Can you put a heater and a filter in a 0.5 gallon tank? Please answer ASAP!😀Thanks
What size should the filter be if i only have a 0.5 gallon tank?
Roblox with Gaming girl yes you can, a small hang on the back filter will do just fine for a half gallon tank. You will have to do some research as far as which kind to buy, there’s tons!
Tank is too small. Bettas need at least 5 gallons.
Amanda Lauf Thank you for responding I am going to try it out and see how it goes! Should I still use the method with aquarium salt for the fun rot?
Emilia R I would just wait and see what the clean warm water will do for him. Do a water change and tank clean (algae, etc), put in the filter and heater, and he might just perk up and the rot will probably stop. I’d say wait a week after you all of that before you start a salt treatment. If a few days go by and the rot progresses really quickly, he stops eating, or any other abnormal behavior/symptoms happen, then start the salt even if a week hasn’t gone by.
Amanda Lauf ,What heater do u use? I have seen a lot but most of them have bad reviews
Emilia R It’s an Aqueon, one of the lower watts like 10, 15, or 20, I can’t remember exactly which wattage it is
Question how often do the water change with salt.
Tank size?
Does ur fish ever jump out of the tank? I heard they jump out if u don’t have a lid for the tank
Amanda Lauf thank you so much for your help! He is already looking better with the salt treatment!!
Do u need to do water changes during the salt treatment or after?
mr sharp do during. If you just keep adding salt without doing 100% water changes it’ll kill your fish since Bettas are freshwater fis
Can I do this if my fish tank has real plants?
gabymarki Generally speaking yes, I now have live plants and have used salt and they’ve been fine, but I know that some plants are sensitive to salt so I would check and see if your plants are some of those
Great video.
What is battyrat? I just got my beta less than 2 weeks ago and He does have something black on the tip of his tail , I believe I have been feeding him too much also but I will use the method with salt and stress coat first.
Pamela Niboonkit I’m not sure what your question is, I think the word autocorrected.
You’re sure the black is not part of his coloring?
@@amandalauf5113 I am thinking not because it is only the very tip of his tail.
I have a 3.5 gallon topfin tank and did a 100% water change with treated water to see if that will help , He is all red my grandson named him Blaze .
I am taking daily snapshots with my phone so I can document.
Also, his fin isn't tearing or tattered yet.
Amanda Lauf thanks so much for the quick reply 🙃 I followed the steps ☺️
Did you add the dechlorinator into the tank water or just for water changes?
Edily When I do a water change I add the dechlorinator every time and it is safe to add directly into the tank water
Amanda Lauf Alright thank you! I might try this method
Good luck! 😊
i wouldn't do a 100% water change since that can kill the beneficial bacteria in the filter
Amanda my betta fin rot is getting worst!! Can i do a aquariam salt bath for my betta fish every single day? will it work?
Michaela Banana From what I researched salt baths aren’t recommended unless your betta isn’t eating or is pineconed or another serious condition...salt baths are very stressful for them.
Hi! Where did you buy your tank? It’s so nice!
Thanks!! It’s an Imagitarium 3.7 gallon from Petco. Originally it had a black wall in the back as a filtration compartment but it wasn’t working very well so I took it out.
Gee, it wouldnt be those plastic plants tearing his fins now would it ?! 🤔
I have that same rock in my tank for my Betta!
If he has a little pice of does it mean he bites it HELP PLEASE!!!!
this is really helpful, i’m gonna go to petsmart and get the products and see if this helps him! thanks so much
Did you just keep adding the salt? Or did you take the water out then add salt. Thanks!
GH0ST66661 Do not keep adding salt, no multiple doses in the same water!!!! You have to do a water change first, then you re-add the amount of salt that you just removed. For example, if you do a 50% water change, when you put in the new water, you’ll dose that water with 50% of the original salt dose.
Amanda Lauf got it! Thanks :)
How do you know how much salt you took out from the tank when doing a 50 percent water change?? Please answer ASAP!😀Thanks
Also, is it good for a betta to live in a 0.5 gallon tank? Anyways my betta fish is a Vetail male betta fish!😀
The Crafty Slime Girl Yes! Yes, if you removed half of the original dose, you will put back that same amount (half) when you do a water change.
Half gallon is not the best...1 gallon would be much better. Do you have a filter and heater in the tank?
folks over at reddit/r/bettafish can help out in detail on bettas is anyone has any other questions about bettas that they cant answer! They helped me with live plants.
Great information- Thanks!
Can you have the fish in the tank while you put the salt in?
Kayley Boo You need to dissolve the salt in a separate container of water. Then once it is completely dissolved, you put that water into the tank (if the fish is in during this part that is okay) The granules of salt will chemically burn the fish so the salt needs to be completely dissolved before you add that water into the tank.
I need help so I have a 2.5 gallon how much salt am I supposed to use ?
well depending on the severity of the fish you can use 1-2tsp do 50% water changes every day for 10 days then stop for a few days then start again. keep going until full recovery which usually takes 2.5 months.
My premium rose Betta has fun rot also.
I’ve been looking for a good sized tank without those built in filter sections. Where did you get this one??
This one is from Petco. It is the 3.7 gallon Imagitarium tank. Originally it did have the back filter compartments, but I hated them so I had my boyfriend use a utility blade to remove them. The glue wasn’t hard at all, so you could pull off the plastic pieces and then use the blade to remove the rest of the glue from the glass. The tank doesn’t come with a hang on the back filter, so the one in the video is a Tetra Whisper, but now I have the smallest Fluval hang on the back. It works great, much better than the Tetra Whisper.
Amanda Lauf
Okay! Thank you so much!!
What tank is that?
Amanda Lauf cool how did you get the back out?? You just ripped it? Lol I heard those filters kill fish tho. Did you hear that? I love your tank.
Using it to repair fins: 1 mL (it says on the back to double your normal dose if youre using it to repair fins)
Keep in mind youre going to have to do some math because you need to replace the amount of stress coat that you took out each time you do a water change. So for 100% changes, you would put in 1 mL. For 50% changes, you would put in 0.5 mL. 1 mL is the smallest circle in the cap.
Amanda Lauf okay thank you! Today I did a 100%, do I do a 50% change tomorrow?
@@ashtontruelove yes!
My silver arowana has fin rot , does aquarium salt affect on arowana s?
Nivanthi Dissanayake I’m sorry, I don’t know! I have only ever had Bettas and Goldfish, you should ask a local pet store, they might know!
Can betta fish's fins regrows on it's own without using any medicine and just by maintaining all the parameters of the tank water?
Rajendra Khedekar yes they can! It depends how on bad the fin rot was for that to happen.
I'm going to do all that right now, I hope her fins get better they were so pretty when I got her :(
Too many plants can also tear fins
How often should I put in the stress coat?
Emily Underwood With each water change you will replace the amount of stress cost lost in that water change. Directions for amount is on the back of the bottle.
I got a betta fish today and his fins are okay BUT his fins are like dropping
O M G T R O L L Did you figure out what it was?
0.5 gallon tank? You need atleast a 2.5 gallon tank. It stresses them out which is probably why your betta got fin rot
🙏🏻 Thanks
Does non iodized sea salt work?
Moua I would suggest researching that, but I’m thinking it probably would not be safe. Any type of marine/sea salt is harmful to freshwater fish. Aquarium Salt is formulated differently and is a completely different type of salt that is safe for freshwater fish.
I usually put the salt in the filter so itll totally desolve
