The amount of emotions Hayden portrays saying "I hate you!" is literally one of the most heartfelt moment in cinema for me. I can really feel all this hatred and anger, it chilled my spine.
But at the same time, you can sense his sorrow, the way he was truly twisted by all that happened, killing the younglings, the way he felt betrayed by the jedis, how he choked Padme although he loved her... truly one of the most emotional scenes ever. Great acting.

Anakin was already to far gone at this point. All the injury did was set in stone his ideals of absolute and constant suffering he puts himself and anyone he trains through once he rises again as Vader. He sees his constant suffering as an edge that keeps him powerful. Not exactly my theory. Many others have thrown that one around as well since he never gets skins graphs and he never upgrades his cybernetic body even though he has nearly endless resources available to do so. Anyways sorry about the rant. I think these two actors perfectly compliment each other in this scene. One wouldn't really be as good without the other.

The only great movie in the Prequels is Revenge of the Sith, Ep. 1 and 2 are just garbage (except for Darth Maul and Dooku) because there was no plot enough for both movies (so they put all the politics mambo jambo that nobody cares... And Jar Jar Binks), everything Jorge Lucas wanted to tell was in Ep. 3. While in the Disney trilogy, Ep. 7 is good (not exceptional, but a very good introduction to the new characters and story), Ep. 8 is great (broke some expectations for the sad whining fans) besides the Canto Bight plot filler, Disney Trilogy only screwed up in Ep. 9, bringing angry JJ back and listening to "fans" bs, undoing all the good choices made in the previous movie. Why bring Palpatine back, if Kylo could be the supreme leader and main villain and not turning back to the light? Why Rey must be related to someone powerful if Anakin Skywalker was born like baby Jesus with no father? Anyway, Ep. 3 is certainly top 3 in SW movies, but that won´t save Phantom Menace and Attack of Clones from being the most boring and poor plotted movies of this franchise along with The Rise of Skywalker.
The Jedi have rules their members are required to follow. They don’t force people to stay. That isn’t slavery. By the time AOTC rolls around, Anakin is a legal adult. He could have chosen to leave the Jedi to marry Padmé.
I know, I think only one of them realized it right away. When I saw it in the theater I thought the same thing till I saw his arm gone too. That was a hell of a swing Obi-Wan took.
Dude, mad respect for George Lucas for daring to show us this very visceral physical transformation of Anakin into Vader. This raw emotion alongside the visuals... it's hard to stomach... so dark, so good. You know nowadays it'd be impossible, Disney doesn't have the balls to go here.
Euh... Kylo Ren a commis un paricide. Ce n'est pas rien. Mais la Prelogie est allée plus loin avec Anakin, dans ses souffrances. Plus encore que dans le Retour du Jedi même 😉
@Isaiah Zorro I see where you’re coming from. I would’ve loved to see an emotional Anakin/pre-suit Vader in the Kenobi series killing younglings in Order 66 like he’s being forced to do it (which he somewhat is at least in his mind he is) and at the end he can apologize to the dead younglings and then realize it’s too late for him to turn back to the light. I wish we would have seen more of Vader’s perspective in the series honestly
It's amazing how the prequels seem to get better and better with age. On release, people said that this was over-the-top and corny. Now, people cry to the point that it should get a retroactive Oscar nomination.
No they're still pretty much garbage...just because the new disney trilogy is bad as well...but in different ways...doesn't somehow make the prequels retroactively better... Bad writing and dialogue, stiff awkward acting, terrible plot, stupid contrivances and a lazy over reliance on green screen...and the whole thing is so lacking in self awareness...thinking it's Shakespeare or a greek tragedy when in reality it's more like a big budget version of "the room" I have pretty low opinion of the Oscar's and what the industry believes his high art worthy of recognition but anyone who thinks they deserve anything but a "razzie" is blind, deaf and dumb.
@@John-kc4cg Nah george forgot or misunderstood what star wars fundamentally was...he somehow got into his head he was frank herbert or some shit...that he was a great science fiction writer capable of handling, prophecy, politics and serious tragic drama etc He seriously overestimated his own talent and skill... It's no coincidence the best star wars film wasn't directed by him and even now no one really recognises how much heavy lifting the other writers contributed to it's success...don't get me wrong...george lucas is a smart businessman (i.E keeping the merchandising rights etc) and true visionary who revolutionised the film industry when he built industrial light and magic...and for that he should always be respected...but he's not a very good writer or film maker...he managed to catch lightning in a bottle and he managed to power and propel an entire career with it... Ultimately though at the end of the day...his legacy is turning a cultural touchstone into little more than mass produced lunch and cereal boxes...all the comics. the extended universe, the lore, all the crap books written by mercenary hacks over the years...it's all cash grab merchandise with no more artistic value or intellectual quality than those cheap empty hollow and plastic lunchboxes...then he sold out "to the souless white slavers at disney" (his words not mine)
@@kamwalker6296 I dont know the writing was crap and it lacked all cohesive planning but the overall production quality and general acting was far superior...and yeah it's obvious george's heart wasn't in it...but the argument that he couldn't find anyone is ridiculous. The truth is...back then like now...there would literally be a million directors lining up around the block to work on a star wars film...more so as it would've been before george and disney devalued and overexposed the I.P...this was long before the whole marvel superhero shared universe craze and the rise of the Y.A (young adult) franchises etc as well...so it literally would've been a once in a lifetime opportunity. If anything the problem would've have been sorting out all the applications, bids and pitches...and considering how the prequels turned out...anyone even a first time director with no experience might have been better at the job. Also we're just talking about direction and managing a production here...this shit doesn't even address the terrible writing, plot and dialogue which george is entirely responsible for...the truth is he'd become too rich, powerful and complacent, no one challanged his decisions whereas back in the day he had calibrators and had to make compromises..."art through adversity"...star wars didn't turn out exactly as he intended...yet it was magnificent.
It was originally scripted when Anakin is burning and he reaches out that he was supposed to cry out “Help me!!” To Obi Wan and then Obi Wan turns and walks away. That brief moment when Vader fades and Anakin resurfaces just adds a whole new layer of emotion to this scene
I think it was scrapped because obiwan would have so much trouble not helping him, and the audience would have negative reactions to him not, same thing as azulas character redemption ark in ATLA, shes too hard to make sympathetic in a short time, zuko would do anything to help her if she asked for it, but she doesnt and that keeps things simple

Keep in mind obiwan loved the jedi order just as much as anakin and was fully prepared to kill him. He wasn't at all the renegade like qui gon, he was by the book, and anakin had just destroyed the entire library.
One of the scenes in cinema that never fails to get me teary-eyed. Their story and John Williams' music under "You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you" hits really hard.

And the final "I loved you" by Obi-Wan just truly hits home, shows that Vader lost himself the moment he accepted Palpatine's call.
The “I HATE YOU” by Anakin is much deeper and sadder than at first glance. Not only is he in agonizing pain and has to watch Obi-Wan take his property and leave him, but he blames Obi-Wan for not making him stronger to save his mother. He also disliked the hypocrisy of the Jedi of making him commit treason. He also blames Obi-Wan for turning Padme against him and sees him as the reason why she’s going to die. Obi-Wan really crushed and saddened by this telling he loved Anakin like a brother makes this the saddest scene in all of cinema. Two brothers gone right in front of our very eyes.😭😭😭😭😭😭

He murdered children, as well as so many other killings. Imagine saying "he wasn't evil" about anyone else in reality that did that, and people would think you were either an apologist for evil or insane. There's a reason Lucas couldn't have Anakin survive in Return of the Jedi.

@@f0x4wd Sidious ordered Anakin to wipe out the Jedi Temple. In doing so, this would inevitably involve killing Younglings, yes. Sidious knew this, and made sure to imply that Anakin would have to "do what must be done. Do not hesitate, show no mercy" in order to become stronger in the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin, completely distraught and clinging to Palpatine as a lifeline after betraying Mace Windu and the Order as a whole, was willing to go along with whatever he said if it meant saving Padme.
I remember seeing this in the theater in 05’ as a seven year old. Everyone was on the edge of their seats because we all wanted to see exactly how Anakin became the masked Darth Vader. When Anakin’s legs got cut off, everyone gasped. It was dead quiet because everyone was so stunned. And once Anakin burst into flames, people gasped again because it came full circle to them. That’s how Darth Vader had to wear his suit. An experience I will never forget!
I was 14 when it came out, and where I saw it, the biggest gasps were when Anakin ignited his lightsaber in front of the younglings. As soon as Anakin lit on fire, my first thought was, "you deserve this. You murdered countless Jedi and children, so this is your punishment." That is why I personally never felt sorry for what Anakin went through.
I always love the people who mention Obi-Wan calling Anakin his 'brother' on the first watch-through. Cuz, in my opinion, that is how he unknowingly failed Anakin. Anakin needed a father, but what he had was a brother/friend. Though that bond isn't to be understated, losing all your parental figures at 9 will mess you up. You can't fully blame Obi-Wan though since he was so young too. Anyways, props to the people who mention that.

The damage was more than external, and he went through surgery without anesthetics or painkillers. The droids had to scrape away all the dead and dying tissue for months. During his transition into the Darth Vader we know and fear, he came to the realization that everything that happened to him was his fault and he owned it vowing revenge on Darth Sidious in whatever way he could. However, during the OT, Vader knew he couldn't beat Sidious and was okay with being replaced by his Son, at least that way Vader would have post-mortem revenge due to The Rule of Two. And then council gave him title right away he didn't take any exam to be a master like others throughout the clone wars and prequels we always saw that obi wan never trusted him plus obi wan was so unqualified to be master that even palpatine didn't bother to eliminate him because he was never an obstacle finally we see in a new hope by the time Luke saw the duel between vader and obi wan , obi wan realized that moment and he unpurposely let it go and was killed by Vader so that Luke could feel the anger and hate towards Vader I believe obi wan had always been a selfish arrogant guy just like other council members

Obi wan thought that everything that was once good about Anakin had disappeared and that this empty shell full of hatred and anger that remained of him should disappear for the good of the Galaxy, to prevent him from spilling the blood of more innocents, Luke then had to finish him off, that's why Obi-wan trained him, but his sacrifice was not intended to create anger towards Anakin within Luke, but simply to die so that Luke and the others escape, since Obi wan knew that Luke wouldn't leave as long as he was alive, and escaping Anakin's wrath without a fight was impossible at that point. Obi wan had many flaws, but being selfish was not one of them, the guy spent almost two decades on a desert and inhospitable planet living badly in order to make sure that the son of the man who betrayed him and ruined his life was safe.

From "Revenge of the Sith" novelization, by Matthew Stover: This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker, forever: The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain. The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew at your flesh. You can hear yourself breathing. It comes hard, and harsh, and it scrapes nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You can never stop it. You cannot even slow it down. You don’t even have lungs anymore. Mechanisms hardwired into your chest breathe for you. They will pump oxygen into your bloodstream forever. Lord Vader? Lord Vader, can you hear me? And you can’t, not in the way you once did. Sensors in the shell that prisons your head trickle meaning directly into your brain. You open your scorched-pale eyes; optical sensors integrate light and shadow into a hideous simulacrum of the world around you. Or perhaps the simulacrum is perfect, and it is the world that is hideous. Padme? Are you here? Are you all right? you try to say, but another voice speaks for you, out from the vocabulator that serves you for burned-away lips and tongue and throat. Padme? Are you here? Are you all right? I’m very sorry, Lord Vader. I’m afraid she died. It seems in your anger, you killed her. This burns hotter than the lava had. No…no, it is not possible! You love her. You have always loved her. You could never will her death. Never. But you remember… You remember all of it. You remember the dragon that you brought Vader forth from your heart to slay. You remember the cold venom in Vader’s blood. You remember the furnace of Vader’s fury, and the black hatred of seizing her throat to silence her lying mouth… And there is one blazing moment in which you finally understand that there was no dragon. That there was no Vader. That there was only you. Only Anakin Skywalker. That it was all you. Is you. Only you. You did it. You killed her. You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself… It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith - Because now yourself is all you will ever have. And you rage and scream and reach through the Force to crush the shadow who has destroyed you, but you are so far less now than what you were. You are more than half machine, you are like a painter gone blind, a composer gone deaf, you can remember where the power was but the power you can touch is only a memory, and so with all your world-destroying fury it is only droids around you that implode, and equipment, and the table on which you were strapped shatters, and in the end, you cannot touch the shadow. In the end, you do not even want to. In the end, the shadow is all you have left. Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself- And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame. This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker. Forever…

Watching this makes you realize just how actually powerful the prequels are. They got their share of hate back in the day but when new people see scenes like this with fresh eyes they get the huge torrent of emotions this narrative climax delivers.
This is by far and away the best emotional acting in all the prequels though and it's basically all because of Ewan. The prequels were not like this overall
@@cptsteele91 He's not wrong though, this movie is a big step up from Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I mean I enjoy those movies, but they are basically just setup for the events of Revenge of the Sith
Love this scene and everyone is giving Hayden his deserved credit on the delivery of the "I HATE YOU!" Line, but coming back I've realized Ewan does an OUTSTANDING job at showing the resentment in his actions he truely believed Anakin was still the savior. You see him come to the realization and fallback on their own personal relationship. Such a heartbreaking scene for cinematography and both actors deserve full marks for their performances.
To this day, Vader’s screams as he catches on fire are just terrifying and excruciating to hear. I almost had to look away in 2005, and 17 years later, it’s just as painful to watch.
My sons didn't know that's how Vader wore the suit he did they watched this scene and they went "That was scary i never knew that's how he got into the suit" My youngest couldn't watch it fully until recently
I think a big aspect of Anakins fall and him and Obi-Wans relationship that is not really touched on is that Anakin had viewed Obi-wan as a father but Obi-Wan had viewed Anakin as a brother.
I think the fact that Obi Wan saw Anakin as a brother as in an equal shows how much Obi Wan really loved Anakin cause he never saw himself as better than anakin but as his equal, which is the greatest admiration that a pupil can get from his master.
@@williamdean4775Qui-Gon is the true father-figure Anakin needed. If he was alive, things would’ve been different. Obi-wan could never fulfilled that role because he wasn’t prepared to train the most powerful force user in the universe.

One of my All-Time favorite theater experiences this fight was sensational on the big screen. They show the OG trilogy and the Prequels at our theater here on the IMAX screen every year for Star Wars celebration 2 full days of Star Wars! Absolutely amazing! If a local theater does it close to where u live I highly recommend it especially if you have a Warren Theater.
Well he has mechanical body so his mobility was nerfed to core but his mechanical arm can overpower that of human's. He lost mobility but was replaced with super strength and of course, he spam his force choke more frequently than Anakin.
As an older fan of Star Wars, I took SHEER care to avoid every spoiler way back then, when ROTS first released back in theaters. People often sung praises about it, so that made me even more excited. Once I watched this on DVD, and heard Anakin scream, "I HATE YOU!" it broke my heart... yet once Obi-Wan said that he loved him, I cried like a bitch. ;A;
I remember being 10 years old in the theater watching this. I know the prequels aren't everyone's bag, but this was the most heartbreaking thing in the world to see at 10. It felt like I was losing a brother along with Obi Wan.
Fun, but actually sad fact: If you look closely to Anakin’s face after Obi-Wan says ”I loved you”, he actually regrets what he has done and wants to beg for forgiveness. Just before he bursts into flames😭😭😭
Maybe his Sith eyes just barely dissipated in that moment, but I actually doubt that he genuinely wanted to ask for forgiveness in that moment. Yeah, the only thing Anakin truly wants in life is validation and love from the people around him, and that "you were my brother, I loved you" would sound like a good argument for him to turn, but with how much the Sith corrupted him already, and after that whole fight... AND after having screamed "I HATE YOU" at him... I'd find it a bit strong that he'd be that quick to ask forgiveness 😅
@@potitishogun2961997 there is a deleted scene where Anakin does ask Obi Wan to help him. Obi Wan then responds that he can, but he won't. @@pyxl666 Hm... I'm lowkey glad that scene was deleted, cuz it's way out of character for Obi to ignore a plea for help, even from his biggest enemy...
This movie did a great job of showing how Anakin becomes Vader both physically and mentally and both actors did a phenomenal job making the audience feel the pain in that scene "in my opinion"
I'm an OG Star Wars fan. I was 2 years old when A New Hope dropped, and SW has been in my life for many great years. So, I was already aware of what was coming, but this scene absolutely broke my heart the first time I saw it. I remember this collective gasp in the theater when Anakin lost his legs, but even a louder gasp when he burst into flames. Despite this being the moment when Anakin emotionally and mentally succumbed to the dark side, my thoughts were with Obi-Wan and how this completely changed both his life and his status as a person. His self-exile to Tattooine was probably the only way he knew how to get any kind of peace after seeing his pupil become the most sinister Sith in existence. I agree, he should've have killed him, but Obi-Wan simply couldn't bring himself to do it. The years he spent alone with these memories was probably punishment enough.
Damn, I didn’t expect to tear up again for this scene. It’s been a while since I saw this movie. The reactions of everyone really got to me. That pain was transmitted so well by Ewan.
I always wondered about that (why Obi-Wan left Vader alive, I mean). I'd always assumed it was because Obi-Wan's emotions were clouding his judgment and that caused him to mistakenly believe Vader would die there, or because he believed Anakin was still in there somewhere, and couldn't bear to hurt him any more than he already had.
i thought he didnt finish off vader because he assumed (with no Palpatine intervention) that the burns would kill him in a few minutes anyway. Shock from losing limbs. Heat exhaustion. Physical exhaustion. Dehydration. Severe burns. Shock from burns. Hypovolemia from burns. For a human being....they'd like die in a few minutes. I assumed Obi thought like I did: "he's dead in a few minutes anyway, better to let him slip into shock, lose consciousness and die than to have his last sight be me walking over to kill him with my lightsabre. Also, I dont want to kill him. " I didnt think mercy or the jedi code had anything to do with it. I assumed it was plain human emotion that made him walk away.
In the novel "dark lord" its literally the weeks after rots, Vader is revealed to the galaxy in news reports of the imperial subjugation of kashyyk. Obi wan is in a cantina and overhears it. He's just in shock and overcome with guilt that he let him live like that.
My dad was a star wars fan and took us to the theatres for all 3 of the prequels. My brothers and I were bawling our eyes out and he was just silent the whole way home. People can criticize the prequels and its fair but this is one of the most impactful events in cinema
It's crazy to think that this movie was made almost 20 years ago. It's also one of the best examples of a tragedy, the other being the story of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings franchise.
@@Tanknuggets217 I wouldn't be too surprised. Sure, there were some dark moments, but nothing too crazy, especially if they wanted to keep a PG or GA rating.
EVERYONE remembers this scene in the cinema..... audience was quiet. shocked with mouth open. some were quietly sobbing. most have tears in their eyes.... (T.T)
I've clearly lost my mind when the second reactor said "he has 1 limb left" I started laughing, Star Wars is my favorite movie but that was just funny as all get out 😂
To see their reaction is how we all felt. But also to think that when most jedi lost limbs or eye sight they lost their connection to the force and to see Vader have no limbs left but still be such a powerhouse in the force shows how powerful he really is. And to know if he wasn't mutilated he would be the most powerful force user in the Galaxy is incredible
I remember when this movie came out i was in middle school and i was shocked that even the girls in class were talking about this movie. How all of them were saying that they were crying. I've always loved the prequils.

Only Two there should be. One Master. One Apprentice. One to embody the power. The other, to crave it.

@@thesigmamale1720 Half true, yes. Vader did, indeed, serve Sidious as his punishment. However, the other half is that Vader didn't have any choice, he wanted revenge, and he was a Rule of Two Sith with little to no hope of continuing the line, himself. He tried to plant seeds of decent, but they were all found and destroyed. Only until Vader found his Son did he accept one of two outcomes.
1.) Train him in secret and prop Luke up as the new Emperor.
2.) Die by Luke's hand, trained by Sidious, and Luke kills Palpatine to become The Sith Master and Emperor. A sort of posthumous revenge, either way, Vader won.

Obi wan was not prepared but he did the best he could, Obi wan always trusted Anakin, that's why he was incredulous when he saw the things he had done in the Jedi Temple, Obi-wan also hid that he knew about Padme and Anakin's relationship, because he knew that this made Anakin very happy, Obi wan already in episode IV believed that Anakin was irredeemable, after all the things he had seen him do, from killing children to suffocating his pregnant wife.

From "Revenge of the Sith" novelization, by Matthew Stover:
This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker, forever:
The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain.
Never.
But you remember…
You remember all of it.
You remember the dragon that you brought Vader forth from your heart to slay. You remember the cold venom in Vader’s blood. You remember the furnace of Vader’s fury, and the black hatred of seizing her throat to silence her lying mouth…
And there is one blazing moment in which you finally understand that there was no dragon. That there was no Vader. That there was only you. Only Anakin Skywalker.
That it was all you. Is you.
Only you.
You did it.
You killed her.
You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself…
It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith -
Because now yourself is all you will ever have.
Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself-
And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame.
This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker.
Forever…

Not fun. Comments are never fun, but that once really isn’t
Maybe his Sith eyes just barely dissipated in that moment, but I actually doubt that he genuinely wanted to ask for forgiveness in that moment.

I'd always assumed it was because Obi-Wan's emotions were clouding his judgment and that caused him to mistakenly believe Vader would die there, or because he believed Anakin was still in there somewhere, and couldn't bear to hurt him any more than he already had.
@@Tantalus010 it’s also fault of the jedi code…. the whole “no striking an unarmed man” thing
@@wandered_rogue22 he still had one arm tho
i thought he didnt finish off vader because he assumed (with no Palpatine intervention) that the burns would kill him in a few minutes anyway. Shock from losing limbs. Heat exhaustion. Physical exhaustion. Dehydration. Severe burns. Shock from burns. Hypovolemia from burns. For a human being....they'd like die in a few minutes.
I assumed Obi thought like I did:
"he's dead in a few minutes anyway, better to let him slip into shock, lose consciousness and die than to have his last sight be me walking over to kill him with my lightsabre. Also, I dont want to kill him. "
I didnt think mercy or the jedi code had anything to do with it.
Most brutal, sad, heartbreaking movie scene ever... rest in peace, anakin skywalker.
When I was a kid when obi wan said I loved you man it had me crying because you can hear the pain in his voice
Disney could never show this type of emotion
@@Tanknuggets217 I wouldn't be too surprised. Sure, there were some dark moments, but nothing too crazy, especially if they wanted to keep a PG or GA rating.
EVERYONE remembers this scene in the cinema..... audience was quiet. shocked with mouth open. some were quietly sobbing. most have tears in their eyes.... (T.T)
I've clearly lost my mind when the second reactor said "he has 1 limb left" I started laughing, Star Wars is my favorite movie but that was just funny as all get out 😂
Yeah, and it was a prosthetic arm as well so in a way he had no limbs left...
“Oh no no that’s disgusting” while her friend is sobbing was too funny to me 🤣🤣🤣
To see their reaction is how we all felt.
3:08 I love how she’s the most stoic of them but you can see how much she’s holding back in the moments when it breaks through
