Hi Chris, Just had 3 Hermanns eggs hatch. I live in the south of England Temperature is around 22C at present Should I keep the 3 newly hatched Hermanns outdoors throughout the summer straight away from day 1 and what is the best substrate for them? They are in an open tortoise table with access to water and shade and vegetation fed on flowers weeds and access to cuttlefish. Then should I keep them in the unit shown in the video in the Autumn prior to a short 6 to 8 week hibernation and once they wake up prior to putting them in the garden? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
As a former keeper I can say this is the best 15 minutes of advice that I have ever seen for anyone wanting to raise a tortoise. Exceptional job! Your vast experience is so valuable and appreciated.
This is amazing info…. Especially about the calcium… a lot of people over do the calcium by not only how often but by how much thank you for all this info
Should I be concerned about what bin I choose to keep my baby in, is propylene plastic a safe plastic to choose to keep my baby tortoise in or will it leach out and hurt my tortoise? If so then what bins do you guys recommend?
Watching baby tortoises just never gets old…especially when you are teaching us how to properly take care of them. They are such beautiful little miniatures of their parents…who will one day be all big and impressive.🖤🇨🇦
I was gifted a four year old red foot tortoise last may. Her previous owner couldn't take care of her anymore, and since I have a very large backyard she can explore, he gave her to me. She has slight pyramiding, but I've been doing research to keep it from getting worse. Even if she just turned 5 years old last week, I'm still going to follow these tips as a new tortoise mommy.
Great instructions. I'm not a turtle owner, but I just love learning about animals with a spotlight on reptiles. I love what you do. But I especially love your conservation work you do. Thanks for all your hard work on saving the turtle family.
Hello everyone! I hope you’re all having an amazing weekend and that you enjoy this video. For how to house slightly larger tortoises of juvenile size, watch this video next: ua-cam.com/video/0PJ9EP05JrE/v-deo.html
Love the support shirt !!! Education and compassion can go far :) Thank you for showing him you care. I adore your children helping in the background and love your content!
Great video!! Oh my goodness, makes me miss my tortoises!! I had to find them a new home after my divorce- I didn't have the room for their indoor habitat and lost the yard for their summer playground. I had a Russian tortoise and a painted wood turtle, both had been surrendered to the pet store I worked in. Luckily I found a great person to take them in.
Thank you so much for the great, informative content! I definitely prefer the long videos, they are kind of therapeutical because of the way you explain all important things but also help A LOT with raising tortoises and getting to know them better without having to read 100 articles or books 😂💚
Another great, informative video! Would love to see a dedicated video on how to care for mature/senior adult turtle & tortoises. Common sign of illness to look out for. How to trim their nails, beak at home. Indoor burmation, etc.
luv tortoises and turtles. Exspecialy baby one's. there so darn cute. I had a tortoise when I was little. But it was stolen. I cryed for days. I think who ever sees this for real there very lucky indeed. and I'm jealous. there's no greater gift then to give life as a woman does. What a beautiful thing to have. from UK 🇬🇧👍 an old cockney gal
@@GardenStateTortoise thanks I appreciate that. but It did happen nearly 80 years ago. I think I was similar to the big ones you showed but not that big. The same size as the one you showed with the little tortoise. I called it zapper. It looked as thou he zapped he's food. it was quite funny to watch him. from 🇬🇧👍 an old cockney gal
Our younger son will turn 8 this Friday, and he has recently become obsessed with tortoises. We adopted a 3-week-old Russian, and your videos are making all of this so much easier! Thank you so much!
Love your channel! You and Casey are amazing. I have learned so much. Im not getting video notifications either, i saw your community post to know you posted. UA-cam needs to get it together.
You inspired me to get a baby hermanns tortoise! Just recently bought a house with a big backyard and I was looking for something that can live outdoors in Arizona, found the perfect pet to grow with my daughter thanks to you. I also found a breeder nearby!
I found baby red footed tortoise in my backyard a few days ago. I thought about leaving it out there but I decided to bring it inside. I don't know how to take proper care of a tortoise so this video is extremely helpful.
Thank you 🙏 very much , I was in a jam , expected my baby tortoise in at least a few weeks , just picked her up yesterday . Well I think it's a her , Of course did not have almost anything except the tote with a lid and a light , bought everything for about just under $20.00 without the tote and food . I have the pansies I planted one in the enclosure . Now just too find the food and calcium . Great information thank you again
This was great! When I was young, my sisters & I adopted box turtles we found. Watching this brought back some great memories. I saw what we did right and wrong. So glad you detailed this. If I was a kid today, I'd be more successful with my pet turtle after watching this! Great job! Otis is awesome! Enjoy your videos and your family being involved. :)
Babies 😍 I have seen on other channels that they have run into the problem of their videos not being recommended. One of the things that they asked people to try is to have everyone go into the search area and type in your name. And then watch a video. And then do it again. Maybe this is something that you could suggest to your subscribers? It is supposed to help notify The UA-cam algorithm that people want to see your content.
Your daughter (in pink at the beginning) looks JUST LIKE you!! It’s adorable. Question: how do you avoid lots of mold and bacteria growth in such a warm, humid container? Just frequent substrate changing? Do you need to give the bins a scrubdown occasionally?
This is amazing! I wish more videos like this were out 2 years ago when I was doing my research. Hope ill be able to acquire and raise radiated babies in the future. They are beautiful ❤
Thanks for the explanations. Very useful. Your daughters seem to be very disciplined in the background. Autumn is already here in the north of France. 🎉
Love these videos. Hope you can make a video on how to care for some of these species on a daily basis. Maintenance, food, cleaning, substrates, what to do when sick, etc..
I have a question about Rhinoclemmys manni, would you raise babies like you would baby box turtles? I'm keeping mine in pretty much straight Sphagnum moss in a Rubbermaid tub angled on one end to provide a water area on one end and I'm wondering if there is a better way or if this would suffice?
@@GardenStateTortoise Thanks, they are on a layer of three inches of moss with about a inch of water underneath with a 75 watt CHE for heat and a small 5.0 uvb arcadia fixture. I'm also soaking daily as I would a tortoise just to be on the safe side. When I was newer to turtles I got a incisa and kept it too dry, while he is healthy now 15 years later those early mishaps left him with a pretty bumpy shell.
So much valuable, detailed information here, very nice. You guys have some of the best turtle content anywhere, thank you for doing what you do! Also, loving the Reptarium shirt - we're all pulling for Brian!
Wish my parents had this video when we were fostering a couple rescued box turtles when I was little. Thankfully my parents soon sent them on their way to a proper, licensed tortoise/turtle rescue center.
It would be great if you could include the link to the juvenile care video in the description, for mobile users. We don't get the in-picture links. Thanks. AMAZIN content.
Always love the educational learning in your videos. I just love the tortoises, but learning their habits & habitats are fascinating. Like being 100% sustainable right after birth. Just have to watch out for ‘gators’! Ouch! Thanks for all you guys do, and the kiddos❤️ PS…? How do they breathe under the substrate?

I’d definitely raise them the same as box turtles with the exception of R. rubida that need humidity but not an overly wet environment.
