Thank you for this!! I have a staffy and she has extra skin under her neck so no matter what I do the prong is either a little to big and slides to the middle of her neck while walking or it’s to tight and just doesn’t look right to me, so I always have it a little to big and I’m constantly adjusting it on walks. This is extremely helpful!!! I use the 2.25mm herm sprenger.
YES!! Plus it lessens the chance of not getting the prong links improperly installed. That seems to be the main cause for fails and needing a back-up clip. I bend metal by hand for work and even I find squeezing the prongs awkward. Steel buckle is much better!
I just use string. Thread it through the corresponding links, and you get the same effect without having to buy anything (unless you don’t have string). Such a difference maker!
I have a Vizsla and she has a very strong pull.... that we are working on correcting. I ran into a problem as the 2.25mm collar was just too small and the links on the 3.2 were too large for proper adjustment. Good new, HS has new 3 mm 'short links' collars equal to the link size of the 2.25 mm but with the heavier gauge steel. That quick link solution is pretty slick. Thank you for sharing.
I'm not sure what the smallest quicklink you have found is. Stainless marine quick links can get fairly small. And they have different shapes. I think I will look into it and see if I can find one that works for me.
Check out the new Herm Sprenger small link 3mm, with the shorter gathering chain. Super adjustable, much more contact, and easy on off with the new quick snap. I had a small part in designing it, so I might be a bit bias. I think it's the best thing to come down the pike since a pocket on a shirt.
Great video. My 106 lb GSD (29” at withers) who I handle commercially, I always use the wider Prong. Got him a new one but also got him a wide Martingale, and due to his age and training, I can still correct if required with the Martingale. I have to have 2 active collars on him when he is working so I still use the slip collar as a backup. Dogs grow up, and really understand what their purpose is as they age. Again great video.
I had accidentally ordered the medium sized 3.2mm prong for my mal instead of the small one and was too late to cancel the order. I have removed 4 links and might remove another one because it still slides down and moves around her neck instead of staying high up in place. Thank you so much for this!
This will help. You want to keep as many prong links as possible for the collar to work as intended as well as distribute the pressure across as many points as possible. As long as there's enough chain left to still provide the action, you can install the quick link down quite far on the action chain.
Do you need to still clip into the original loop or clip into the split ring? I think you should show where to clip in because it’s kinda vague on how it actually works.
My problem is my black mouth cur has a neck as straight as an oatmeal tube/carton. Even if its snug up behind his head, when he loose leash walks for ten feet it's going to slide down to his shoulders.
My husband got sick of me moaning about the inability to micro adjust and he made me five centre plates of different lengths, two smaller than the ones that come with the Herm Sprenger and three longer, and those gave me the micro adjustment and then someone said ‘Oh, I just use a cable tie on the chain!’ - my husband gave me such a look having carefully made and drilled and polished and measured these different lengths of centre plate hahaha!
LOL! I can relate on a few levels. I have a welding and wood shop, so like your husband, the all in, full custom is the first instinct. But, I wanted universal, off the shelf and inexpensive with no faffing around. My designer brain always wants to make improvements. But my practical brain also tries to temper that with the KISS rule. I considered cable/zip ties for 3 seconds. But they are susceptible to abrasion and degrade from chemical and UV exposure, so were quickly eliminated from the test list.
Yes, leash still goes on the original attachment ring/swivel. The quick link will be just below it. On my dog, it's only two chain links down on each side from the swivel so there's still lots of length on the chain for the 'action'.
Thanks so very much for posting this and the hard work that went into film!!! I'm so happy this can be shared. That was my biggest wish, to get it out to as many folks as possible! I love the key ring mod and that was actually one of the things I tried. My concern was it's strength (not that there's a lot of pressure on it), availability of heavy duty key rings and the heavy duty ones could be a bit tough on folks finger nails! LOL! I've got another alternative I'll post below. Something important to add is to tighten the quick link nut once you've got it sized. When testing, I found 'finger tight' wasn't enough and it would rattle loose. Just tighten it with a wrench or pliers. 👍 There's been a few questions about the mod and/or alternatives. If you don't mind, I'll add some notes below as I'm sure you're a busy guy! Again, can't thank you enough. I hope this helps owners and those that struggle or have given up and their Herm Springer prong are collecting dust in a drawer! Best regards, Bert
RE: The smaller chains. The smallest link I could find at the local shop was a 1/8 inch. (sorry metric folks, I don't have the equivalent size link.) Perhaps elsewhere in the world, there are smaller ones (Please post here if you find one!) Alternates for the smaller chains could be key ring carabiners. A company called Nite Ize makes some very small double ended ones. These may be stronger and easier for some people to employ as the heavy duty key rings can be pretty hard on the fingernails! 😁 There are also small accessory carabiners with a twist barrel closure that are meant to hang gear of a backpack, but they tend to be a bit too big I think, but YMMV. In both cases, you should find a way to fix the opening so it doesn't open accidentally. Nite Ize may make a unit that locks and the accessory carabiners can be bent a bit to keep the brass barrel from unscrewing. Or, once happy with the fit, a drop of Locktite or super glue would hold it. The heavy key ring Robert used would certainly work as the pressure is mostly on the chain itself and no one should be yanking on these collar anyway! **Update: I saw online there are smaller quick links, in metric sizes. And they were available in even smaller 2mm sizes (1/8" = 3.175mm) So that's a great option. Hopefully available in Europe and North Am. That small a size may not be commonly available in the local shop, but could be ordered.
RE: Quick Link. Once you've got it sized correctly, tighten the Quick Link nut with a wrench or pliers. Finger tight isn't quite enough in my testing and it could, surprisingly, rattle loose.
RE: Folks with the HS NeckTech collars without the action chain. This mod it for the 'usual' style prongs, so this mod won't work. I'll have a look at pics of them, but I don't have one to play with, so anything I think of, I'll post. But it will just be a guesstimate. For those with the knock-off prongs: Please, most of them are poor copies made with no knowledge or regard for the proper design and quality of the HS prongs. Some have nylon webbing for the action chain as a cheap manufacturing choice. And many of the ones I've seen, the prongs are sharp and sometimes not even oriented the correct way. I realize the HS ones aren't cheap. But wait, save up a bit more and get the proper ones. Buy once, cry once, as they say.

this hack is so good. i use a 2.25 on my alaskan klee kai and using 5 prongs is a little loose and spins around the neck but having 4 is too snug and wont rotate at all. i like to have the prong on the fitted side that can still spin especially using with the ecollar as well. the key ring let me dial in the perfect fitment
Does the keyring really need to be heavy duty? When there is tension on the leash, the force is applied vertically on the links themselves so there is practically 0 force on the keyring. The only tension applied to the keyring is when the collar is at rest on the dogs neck and the force there *should* be fairly minimal, right?
Hello! While this is a great idea, it unfortunately doesn’t work for smaller prong collars like the 2.25 mm collars. The smallest quick link available (1/8th in) is too big for the links within the back chain (at least for the quick release collars). Please let me know if you’ve found an alternative. Thanks!
People have talked about zip ties, but that seems like a waste to adjust all the time. Wire keychains are looking interesting. They're cheap on Amazon and come in huge packs so you have backups.
Great idea, my English lab has that extra skin so his prong collars seems to fall down where I know it should fit up by his ears, but I don't want it too tight of coarse to beable to correct ?
If you have enough prong links so the collar is just a bit too loose, the quick link will insert through the chain quite close to the leash attachment ring/swivel. On my dog, the quick link is only down two chain links on either side, from the attachment ring so there's still lots of chain for the 'action'. I think Robert just had it quite a bit further down than will be needed just for demonstration purposes. It's a pretty hard thing to film. 😊👍
Also, once the collar is properly snug, there isn't a need for a huge amount of action. The great thing about the prong collars is you only need a light pop or tug. They should never be yanked. So as long as there's a couple inches between the rings the chain goes through on the either side of the collar, that should be plenty of room for actuating it.
At what dog age do you recommend I can start using the prong collar ? I have a 3 month old GSD puppy. Can I start using it ? I keep getting mixed answers on google.
What if the prong does not have the chain? It’s like a flat color but prong (also from herm sprenger). My Mali without the clip too tight it snaps off! Add it? It’s super loose! Help!
I had posted a reply, but was thinking of the off brand prongs that I've see with a strap instead of the chain, for the action/attachment point. These cheap, terribly made knock offs should be avoided!!! Most of them I've seen are poor copies and have been made with ignorance to the purpose. I've look at the HS catalog. Is yours one of the ones with the metal links with the small, triangular prongs? Kinda looks like a wrist watch band. I'm not a fan of these, as I they don't seem to distribute the pressure over the circumference of the neck and still, like a flat collar, focus the pressure more on the front of the throat. However, I've not used one so I'm just making assumptions based of looking at them in pics. But I also understand that you've got one and it's not cheap to just toss it and get a standard style HS Prong. Let my look at the pics more and see if I can make a suggestion. 👍
@@sarahhatouka1166 Only thing I can see doing is cutting off the straps and using a section of chain and a quick link to convert that one to the cinching style. HOWEVER.... I can't see the collar well enough to say if the rings on either side would work with chain. I think, realistically, I'd sell the one you have and get the version with the cinch/ Martingale style chain, like in the video. Better than chancing ruining the one only to have to buy a new one anyway. At least you could sell yours to help pay for the new one.
That'll work, but I'd only use it temporarily. Plastics tend to breakdown/weaken with exposure to UV's from the sun and chemical exposure (natural oils from the dogs coat).
In Germany the use of a prong collar is illegal for everyone since June 25 2021, even for the police, customs or military service. Some federal state police departments have applied in vain for an exemption, because under such circumstances their previous selection of particularly energetic dogs with a highly drive can't therefore no longer be continued. I guess that the majority of the responsible political decision makers do not have any real experience with such kind of fine working dogs and their nature.
hi Robet! I did cut the chain off from the small prong and add paracord to its ends to fit the Mali and it works safe if you know knots. Hello from Romania
Great topic...any experience working with/training Black Mouth Curs? (The guy who trains all the local LE K9s near me(he works with civilian dogs too) couldn't get off the phone fast enough when I told him the breed I had. He told me good luck, you don't have a shot in hell with those dogs, and wouldn't work with them for obedience training and I was always curious why?) Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
@@wingnutbert9685 thanks, I wasn't upset, more so curious to why he thought that! Either way he was wrong about his assumptions, as my two dogs get a long beautifully now...but I still ponder his reasoning behind it
I've got a remote collar that came with the shock cord and cam lock. Hated it as it caught on branches and got stretched out quickly. The plastic cam lock also broke after the third time. but if it's working for you, great!
@@wingnutbert9685 Yes it is working great. I use it on prong collar and on e-collar and it has not streched out or broke. I bought it from hiking/climbing store(cam lock) and cord from nautical store and it works perfect. Cord was less than 2€ and 4 cam locks were arround 3€.
If it fits through the "action" chain links, probably. There are the ones they sell for clipping accessories to back packs. But they may be too long and/or bend over time. If you go with it, use locktite on the threads or bend it slightly so the brass barrel nut doesn't come loose, which they do. If it's a spring opening one, I'd be very concerned about it popping open. Been there, suffered that. I made some other suggestion in my own comment and replies. Let us know if you have a carabiner that works. 👍
Hello Robert! I’ve been using an HS 2.25mm backed up with a flat collar for about 4yrs now with good success. The only downside I’ve experienced is the HS flat d-ring slipping through my bolt snap on occasion. I was wondering if you could do a video explaining the different leash snaps on the market, their various uses, pros and cons as well the same for brass, stainless steel, and zinc hardware?
Bolt carabiner = safest method provided it has a good quality spring, unless using a screw locking carabiner Scissor carabiner = can be opened under tensile load Materials: Steel = most resilient everything else is softer and less resilient up to the breaking point Hope I could be of some help.
From my experience and others these things just do not work on most pit bulls Staffordshire or even with the Cane Corso I had the dog l have now happens to be that Corso puppy but also half American pitbull terrier and won't work on him either just will not fit and as soon as he shakes as much as he does it goes down especially due to much of the area being excess skin their necks are too horizontal and not vertical or straight up as with other breeds am I wrong also in the way I'm going about it as well as with the hypothesis that they just don't work the same way with certain breeds
They can be pretty hard for some to get apart. I highly recommend getting a metal buckle. There are a few ones made for prongs. They can be added in and replace a prong section or two to get close to the fit. Then fine tune with the method in the video.
This is amazing!! I have a whole bunch of quick links for safety clips. I love this! I hope they have smaller quick links for a 2.25mm. Just saw the end of your video-of course you thought of that already 🤣
@@joyfulk9services I added a suggestion to my post on here with other suggestions and answers to question in the replies to my own post. 👍 2mm links are available!
I don't use them for every dog, or even for most dogs. But when I do, I actually put one on myself and let owners correct me with it, so they can see that it doesn't hurt and isn't meant to hurt. The problem is that there are a lot of people who don't have correct timing or pressure, so it's not a tool for everyone. I look at them like a surgeon's scalpel: it's a specialized tool designed to help when all other options are ineffective. But, just like a scalpel, you have to be trained how to use it properly, otherwise you can hurt someone accidentally.
It's simple manufacturing economics. If they made prongs in 1mm increments, the cost of manufacturing, overhead, inventory holding would go through the roof. And the price would go way up accordingly. Plus, there would still always be dogs that would be just between size. And dogs all having uniform neck sizes isn't gonna happen. 😁 So this is the cheap, easy way to fix the issue. Ultimately, I'd love HS to see this and suggest it to their customers and/or even start including an appropriate size Quick Link with all the collars. Would be a cheap thing to offer and likely increase sales and get folks to use ones they have but don't use due to bad fit.
You are f……k kidding me …….I did the same thing two years ago , although I set it up so that it is the closer so I do not have to take apart links . I have an 85 pound yellow lab , who was the hardest pulling dog I have had in 40 years . He is good now .
That's great. Glad it worked for you too! It's pretty simple. I use the links when making my own leashes. The bad fit was driving me nuts and I just sat on the hall bench one day before a walk and put two and two together. First was a nut and bolt. Too finicky and common bolts that small are very strong with side loading in that situation. They also needed a second jam nut. Then I grabbed a key ring. Great but the heavy duty ones are pretty tough to get on the links even with my ridiculously tough fingernails! LOL! Then looking at the Quick Links on my DIY leashes, the the light bulb went off. Glad it worked for you and your pooch! My American Bully has a very short, smooth coat and works well for keeping it in place on her stump of a neck! LOL!
What's unethical? Metal is sustainable to produce. It will likely last forever, in this application, therefore minimizing waste. Available off the shelf, so preventing unnecessary shipping pollution. By no means is it perfectly earth friendly. But it's definitely not terrible. 👍

But I also understand that you've got one and it's not cheap to just toss it and get a standard style HS Prong. Let my look at the pics more and see if I can make a suggestion. 👍
Much appreciated, it’s the one with the lock on the clip. I wish I can post a pic here 😂
@@sarahhatouka1166 You could find your collar in their catalog and post the model# here if you want. 👍
@@wingnutbert9685 B07V1JZ83F I believe this is it
@@sarahhatouka1166 Only thing I can see doing is cutting off the straps and using a section of chain and a quick link to convert that one to the cinching style.
Awesome! I still struggle with fitting the 3mm prong collar on my 80+lb wgsd and will try this immediately.
Let us know how it goes! :)
this looks like it gets rid of the martingale's tightening effect. Is this true?
Yes, but you should still have a small amount of play sufficient to operate the synch function depending on where you add the quicklink.
You can do the same with a cable tie too if you haven’t got a quick link.
That'll work, but I'd only use it temporarily. Plastics tend to breakdown/weaken with exposure to UV's from the sun and chemical exposure (natural oils from the dogs coat).
Can someone help me ? How many more links do I need to buy for a German Shepherd? it is still growing and I want to save on shipping to Brazil.
Thank you.
A small zip tie works even better & is easier to install with less bulk.
Great thank you for this hack,
Robert Cabral is this for real?
Great idea 👍
Thank you very much Robert!!
Brilliant, but also be aware quick links are notorious for becoming impossible to remove as they age and are exposed to the elements (climber tips)
No they don't, the ignorance will do far more harm than good.
Funny because herm springer is made in Germany
It's proof that the woke suckers are taking over the world.
@@thefamily2707 You'd think such an old company (1872) would have a little political clout to prevent such a law.
Typical politicians. The same all over the world. Making decisions for topics with no knowledge.
hi Robet! I did cut the chain off from the small prong and add paracord to its ends to fit the Mali and it works safe if you know knots. Hello from Romania
Yep, that's another way to get it custom fit! Just need to watch for wear on the paracord.
Great idea and video! Thanks!
Epic thank you
My puppy is 5 months 30 lbs should i use medium or small then. The 3.3mm collar said for 30lb plus so thats why i got the larger one smh
2.25mm
@RobertCabralDogs thank you picked up the size you recommended and he is doing great. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing.
Nice tip. I've been using zip ties.
Another great video
love this!
Brilliant! Thank you
Thanks!!! Love your training 🎉
You're so welcome!
Great topic...any experience working with/training Black Mouth Curs?
(The guy who trains all the local LE K9s near me(he works with civilian dogs too) couldn't get off the phone fast enough when I told him the breed I had. He told me good luck, you don't have a shot in hell with those dogs, and wouldn't work with them for obedience training and I was always curious why?)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry to hear that! That would certainly leave you feeling dejected! Hopefully Robert might have a suggestion and/or a trainer in your area. :)
@@wingnutbert9685 thanks, I wasn't upset, more so curious to why he thought that! Either way he was wrong about his assumptions, as my two dogs get a long beautifully now...but I still ponder his reasoning behind it
@@jesusmaryandjoseph6 Indeed, very odd attitude for a trainer of that level, without knowing the individual dogs. Happy that you had success!
I like to use a zip tie.
I have always just used a zip tie! LOL
I use elastic cord and cord adjuster and loope it like the chain and then you have infinite adjustment
@@kristjanposavec6834 That's great. Likely much better quality cam lock and cord than what came stock with my remote collar from Dogtra. 👍
Maybe I can use my carabiner. I will try.
The quick links for hanging bird toys in cages may be small enough.
Awesome!!
I bought a harness for the dog instead and he stopped pulling.
Awesome
Hello Robert! I’ve been using an HS 2.25mm backed up with a flat collar for about 4yrs now with good success.
The only downside I’ve experienced is the HS flat d-ring slipping through my bolt snap on occasion.
I was wondering if you could do a video explaining the different leash snaps on the market, their various uses, pros and cons as well the same for brass, stainless steel, and zinc hardware?
Bolt carabiner = safest method provided it has a good quality spring, unless using a screw locking carabiner
Scissor carabiner = can be opened under tensile load
Materials:
Steel = most resilient
everything else is softer and less resilient up to the breaking point
Hope I could be of some help.
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
The prongs on the collar I have are impossible to get apart...what is possibly wrong with this?
They can be pretty hard for some to get apart. I highly recommend getting a metal buckle. There are a few ones made for prongs. They can be added in and replace a prong section or two to get close to the fit. Then fine tune with the method in the video.
This is amazing!! I have a whole bunch of quick links for safety clips. I love this! I hope they have smaller quick links for a 2.25mm. Just saw the end of your video-of course you thought of that already 🤣
I'll add a comment here with another suggestion for the smaller collars....👍
@@wingnutbert9685 Thank you! We love dog training hacks! Anything to make things more efficient and easy! Thank you Bert! Looking forward to it.
Liked and subbed
thank you!!!
All this could be alleviated if Herm Sprenger made a size in between 2.25 and 3.0 but nope they won't.
Actually the issue is that the 2.25 can still need adjustments.
Why not a premium strength nylon zip tie. Much more adjustable.
Nice! Pause for the “I’d rather put a dog down than use a prong collar” people…
😆 Helmet on......👍

Nice production
LOL!
I have a better idea. Not micro, nano adjustment. How can I share with you?
Just wow! So unethical.
Say you don’t know shit about training working dogs without saying you don’t know shit about training working dogs…
What's unethical? Metal is sustainable to produce. It will likely last forever, in this application, therefore minimizing waste. Available off the shelf, so preventing unnecessary shipping pollution. By no means is it perfectly earth friendly. But it's definitely not terrible. 👍
Thanks for caring.
Tell those dogs hush! We got idiots trying to listen here. Thanks for your videos and help
