Now I know what my mechanic was talking about; registering the battery. He wants $400 for a battery change on my 5 series. Now I see why. Thanks for making this video available. It helps a lot.
After almost 9,5 years of operation, I had to change my battery of my 135i last saturday. In an E82 this is actually a lot easier and more accessible than an E90. Everything is in reach in the middle of the trunk. What I missed in your video is that you need to plug the other side of the vent opening on the battery when installing. Either take the plug from your old battery, or use the plug provided with the new battery to plug the vent hole that is not in use. There is one on either side of a battery. You plug the grey hose in the + side vent hole (9:00), bot say nothing about plugging the other hole. If you don't plug it, it could lead to venting unwanted gasses into the trunk. And registering the battery with MHD, as long as it is the same spec, is ridiculously simple and quick.
I always replace my batteries after 4 years in the fall. Had to do that “when it’s f****** zero” one too many times. Just decided it would be on my terms after pulling a battery by sled two miles so I could go to work. Great video!
No wonder bmw wants every bmw owner to bring their car up to them for any maintenance. They purposely make everything super difficult, even removing the battery is a chore.
My car is FUCKED right now because of the battery being taken out with no memory. My signal lights don’t work, nothing on the control module for that matter, my front windows are stuck rolled down and now have to take it into the shop for a factory restart. Will cost me $300...

Many questions after this video: you can do the registration with INPA, ISTA or NCS Expert and a generic OBD. Besides, you dont say how much time you must have the car turned on the first time so that the ECU measures correctly the SoH (state of health) of the battery. You dont cover as well whether to charge the new battery before installing it. It can be as low as 60%.

I was told by BMW once you replace the battery with the same battery by that I mean same amperage and spec you do not need to register it again. So other than the labor involved removing and reinstalling it it shouldn’t be too big a deal.

Hi Lee, I was wondering if you have heard of intermittent starting issues. My car is a 328i (not x drive) It has 78K miles. From one day to another it decided to not turn on. It sounds like an old car with a plugged fuel filter. It basically starts when it wants to. Usually if I let it sit for a few days without attempting to start it, the next time it try it works. Sometimes all the lights turn on (check engine, some weird multiple lights, etc) other times it starts without a single light on. I have had 3 places check it out BMW dealership messed up my car and I have zero confidence in them, they wanted $3500 to repair it prior to having this issue. Another dealership ran a diagnostic and said it was caused by a oil leak and charged me $230 for the diagnostic, the last dealership wanted to update everything and wanted about $4K. I requested to replace the spark plugs and the MAF sensor based on a video that I saw on youtube, but my car is now running amazing, but I still have the intermittent start issue. I know have a battery issue and am hoping, perhaps that was the issue to begin with. Now that I am seeing how complex a vehicle battery is, maybe I should have started with that. Hopefully you can give me some guidance. The car battery light NEVER turned on until today and after everything I tried was before this. Hope to hear from you. Thanks in advance!

I have a question. My daughter in law has a 2007 BMW 328i. She needed a new battery so I went to Costco. The salesman at Costco seemed somewhat confused when he looked into the manual to locate the battery. Finally he said, "I'm not sure which one of these batteries is the right one..." He showed me what he was looking at, and in the battery listing from 2007-2012 BMW's of her make and model, there was listings named as: "2012-07 L6/3 OL" and some had "AGM, Option 3...", "w/o AGM, option 3", and w/o AGM option 1". What is an AGM option and how do I know specifically which battery is the correct one for her car? I don't want to get the wrong battery that could damage the electrical systems in her car. Mahalo 🤙🏾
AGM (absorbed glass mat) is an upgrade to the typical wet style lead acid. The battery class should be a 9AGM49. I went to Batteries Plus for mine. $215 with a 10% off online code took it under $200. Dealer wanted $286. Good luck!
When registering the new battery through the bt tool. Does it compensate for a higher cranking, amp etc. if it’s not the same battery type? I have Carly’s app and the bt tool. I noticed both have different process for registration of a new battery.
Had the original battery for 7 1/2 years in 2006 325i. Replaced with an identical battery and never registered it. My driving habits changed from 6K/year to 4k/year..short trips. My new(3 1/2 year old battery) started to die. Used a CTEK battery tender from time to time, and when I make a 2 mile trip to post office, I let the car idle. Suprisingly for my now 5 year old battery, this cold winter in NY has been a non-event. No dead battery. So maybe registering would have helped, but what if I reconditioned the battery with a CTEK, should I re-register the battery to do it properly?
Is your battery still alive? I am very curious as I did not know about registering it. I did the exact same thing just replaced with the same one. Should I register it as the car seems to be charging it normally
@@derekmaldonado3300 Old comment. I have a foxwell scan tool to register my battery if I chose, but I believe I am on my 4th original BMW battery and never registered the battery and never had an issue. The DME does not know that the battery was changed. Don’t you need to enter the Amp hour for the battery? I have seen that in other videos. Thanks
Do you recommend using a memory saver or does it not matter considering you have to reset and register the battery with BMW?
Paul Skinner I’m wondering the same thing
What if i want to add a second battery for auxillary items, do i need to code it too?
Hey where did you buy that cord to plug into your car and after 4 years has you car had any electrical issues?
I'm in the middle of replacing my batter and the red power wire with the black connector came out from where ever it was connected to the vehicle. Any idea where it goes?
soooo what if you don’t get a bmw battery and have no where to put that little white hose on? is it still good like thag
The cable you left disconnected and just tucked away, you said is only for transporting a battery? How would that work?
it probably goes to the positive and negative terminals and has a tinny fuse. its almost Stanley used to connect a battery maintainer system so they are always float charged in storage
thank you for your helpful video. exhaust sounds good. engine valve lifter sounds a little loud. i think syn oil is too thin to seal lifters mechanism. i add some regular 10w/40 oil, after 2 weeks drive, no more lifter noise.
kevin fan It’s a little loud in these cold temps and since this was a cold start
@@BMWFanatic Cold start is definitely not at proper engine operating temperature.
I plan to use a memory saver cable and power source during battery changeout. Is it really necessary to register the new battery like you did?
Great video. Will the car run with a new battery that is not programmed to the car? Like an AGM aftermarket one from advance autoparts?
Great video. Can the battery registration be done with ProTool?
The process he performed was "reset battery adaptation". Is that the same as registering the battery?
Is there a link for that software?
Keep up your awesome videos man ur the best!
Andrew BMW 7511 thanks man!
I have a question for you I just got a 2004 BMI 530 I and I got it from my boss the car was majorly well taken care of but he just put a new battery in it and I don't think he registered it and my screen my I drive screen comes on shows the BMW and them blinks back off the BMW comes back on and it blinks back off could it be a fuse or is my I drive controller it's self pad or is it just because he did not register the battery? please help me I'm going nuts
Not the fuse and not the battery.
@@RomasQuicker what is it? I changed the idrive because it didn't click anymore and I changed the module
I have a 2017 X5 and every time I start my car the heat comes on automatically.. Please tell me how to how turn this function off? THANKS IN ADVANCE! 😊
It's in the iDrive climate settings! I did this myself and was confused 😂
Is this process needed for a 2007 bmw 330i
Yep
Hi had to remove my battery had a drinks spill.reconnected the terminals but now I get air bag emblem and seat belt emblem and roof top emblem.120i convertable 2010 how do I remove emblems thanks Trev in sunny cape Town south africa
Is there any other way to register the battery beside using Bavarian Scanner???
www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/#1460993734087-ea97bdb5-d811
MHD has a battery registration reset adaptation. Would that work instead of going through the Bavarian Technic process?
Sebastian Stanglmeier Yeah you can use MHD too. JB4 has an option as well, but I wanted to use my BT cable so I know for sure it was done 👍🏻
11:00, what cable is that and what is likely to happen if you connect it to the positive?
Did you get it running better?
You had a random small wire that was on the red power block cable. It wasn’t plugged in, does that do anything?
No, that's used in the import process to trickle charge the battery during transport...I just zip tied mine so it's not loose
Got a question for you that I can’t find info on, thinking you might have that knowledge. Going to replace my daughters X3 F25 battery, wondering if I place a battery charger on the connection point under the hood and then remove the battery will that same all her memory items in her car, yes I will protect the positive cable in the trunk not to short it out. Just wondering to save some time reprogramming , radio, seat and such. Then I can just register the battery with my Carly.
Sorry if I missed it, but what did you do so you don’t lose all your settings while the battery is unhooked? Thanks
Is this method the same for a 2011 F10 5 series, Specifically a 550i XDrive ?
Its bmw so i wouldnt doubt it
For all the DIY videos you’ve posted do you normally remove the negative connection on the battery before performing engine work? Not sure if it’s needed to do spark plugs, injectors, etc. I’ve been religiously following your videos and you’ve given me the courage to start work on my n54 e90 but something I’ve been pondering, worrying about possible shock. Pretty sure I’m spooking myself here. Thanks and keep the vids coming!
Good job! Is battery bigger in BMW 745i?? Maybe 95/110 amp??? Is procedure same?? How much these BMW batteries cost?? Can I put "regular" battery in there, if size/ amps are same?? And, one more thing, where could I get that BMW program into my laptop computer?? Could I buy it on line?? Thanks a lot, youtheman !

What happens if you don’t register the battery ?
Just like my car! Thank You!!! My battery is almost ready for a change. Soon is going to take a hike!!!
You made it look easy given that it is so cold. Great job dude.
Yeah it was 0 degrees outside lol
@@BMWFanatic Yea, and I only counted 7 re-takes......
I had my battery replaced by a non BMW mechanic and I think they messed up. My car won’t start after I kept getting warning messages and I compared the wiring to the one In this video. They didn’t plug in the last blue connector that he plugged in....can anyone tell me what that ones for and if that could’ve cause the problem
Is this a AGM battery or Led Acid ?
Where can I get that cable from ? How much is it ? What software program are u running to code
$179
Burgertuning.com
Software from BavarianTechnic.com is free to download / just need the cable
@@BMWFanatic how does this compare to INPA
Can you link to the cable and the software?????
watched your vid 3x and swapped mine in 20min. thx
Can you do it with obd11?
someone said u have to plug in a 9 volt battery to cig lighter to hold the cars memory before u take out battery is this true?
awesome video demo. It is straight forward with clear instructions. Can you advise please how you know when it is time to change car battery?
I just wondering if that JB4 1/7 menu its not for reset batery also. I did that 10 month ago. And all looks preety fine

Good luck!
My Costco doesn’t carry it or Walmart , only O rielly and paid $199 w AMG.
When registering the new battery through the bt tool. Does it compensate for a higher cranking, amp etc. if it’s not the same battery type?
I have Carly’s app and the bt tool. I noticed both have different process for registration of a new battery.
Pinoy Boy Nope, you would have to code the car to have those values updated - so INPA
This was a direct swap for specs, so nothing different needed
@@BMWFanatic Thanks for clarifying. So essentially useless for a battery with different specifications.
I am interested in the Bavarian technic scan tool? which one did you get?
If you don’t use an OEM battery and there’s no place for a vent line what do you do?
Does even the corporate edition without i drive need battery registration?
Some would say that the battery should be registered so the battery monitoring system knows that the charging profile has changed, but again I never had an issue.
