- In this episode, we finally pick back up on the Killer Instinct restoration project. We complete the rest of the control panel and get read for final boot up and testing.
A little about Killer Instinct:
Killer Instinct is a series of fighting video games originally created by Rare and published by Midway, Nintendo, and Microsoft Studios. The original Killer Instinct was released for arcades in 1994; the game was then released for the Super NES and Game Boy in 1995. Its popularity led to a sequel, Killer Instinct 2, which was released for arcades in 1996; the game was then released as Killer Instinct Gold for the Nintendo 64. The series was rebooted with the release of Killer Instinct (2013) for the Xbox One.

Oh man, I can relate Ralph! I was putting the finishing touches on my KI last week and had the brilliant idea to change the coin lamps with the game on. While doing so, I touched something inside the coin door and the entire game shut off and wouldn't come back. I was freaking out!!!! Left it for a few minutes, came back and it started working again. Dodged a bullet for sure. I think you should keep it, regardless if you are good at it or not. It's a piece of arcade history and not going to get any easier to find going forward, if you ever wish to add it to your collection down the road.
That tune is just so iconic
As a big KI fan I need to say this; if you don't fix this thing, we can't be friends any more.

I wasn’t into KI also, my allegiance was MK. But man I always remembered that KI intro/attract screen blaring across the arcade.
Me too, it was iconic, even if you didn't play it. It blew my mind the first time I saw the intro.

Firstly, that control panel art really looks great! It is super cool to find stuff like that preserved underneath! Your smash TV was the same way! Secondly, thanks for sharing what really happens! Forgot to secure the monitor chassis. A classic blunder! That's the real stuff we all do! Most just have the guts to show it! It is especially easy to botch things up when your thinking about multiple projects at the same time. I try to force myself to work on just one at a time. That does not always work.

It’ll buff out…Probly just a fuse 😬 I remember I dropped a screw driver in the back of my turtles cab while attempting to “adjust” the monitor…no clue what I was doing. Turtles was my first cab and I was learning damn it lol. It landed on the fuse block and they all shorted at once with a brilliant spark. I was like oooook and slowly put the back door on and went upstairs 😂 I’ve learned though the years that most mistakes can be fixed on these wonderful machines. Nice video man ✌️

The Indiana Jones of video games is saving another treasure from the trash heap of history. You'll find someone who loves KI who will take it off your hands and you will have contributed righteousness to the universe. Keep fighting the good fight!
A nice episode Ralph. A word of advice. If you have any interest in this game title at all you should consider keeping it in your collection. I've owned both KI1 and KI2. I sold them many years ago and regretted it. Plus, with prices going up on them it's not one that you can get back cheap unless you find a project. Anyway, something to think about. Learn from my mistake. I finally found another one after a few years of looking and don't plan on selling it again. :)
I wish I would of documented my MK1 cab restoration, it was converted to a Sharpshooter gun game, and painted all black. I managed to strip all of the paint, and by some miracle restored the original artwork in the end. It was a hell of a task. But damnit I love restoring machines

@@RetroRalph It sounds like the excitement to see if it worked wasn't the problem. If anything, use this as a learning experience to leave things at a safe endpoint (I can be guilty of this). Something like not plugging the AC into the chassis until its properly mounted could avoid the sparks :) Like I read in a few comments, hopefully this is just a fuse. KI is looking great otherwise! Stay Retro!

It’s finished, I sold it to my buddy Rudy who’s a big fan of KI. So it went to a great home!

yikes! man hope you can get it fixed, that's never good. looking forward to future updates on the KI project, definitely one I had fond memories of in the arcade and on SNES! the soundtrack still jams to this day!!

I was going to ask about recessing the housing for the joysticks so that the joystick has a longer shaft, but then you said you weren't that attached to KI. So I doubt you'll have interest in doing any further work on this amazing cab. #playki

Man I'd love to own a real Arcade.. If I ever had the money I would get Moon Patrol. Back when I was a little kid my older brother would take me to the grocery store and we would play that game. I miss those days..

Unfortunately I listen to those impulses too. Causes me to start over way too much lol. Then of course kick myself in the ass and tackle it again 🤷
You would quickly realize that Killer Instinct is the best fighting game of all time if you learned some of the basic combos. I've played everything and am only mediocre at knowing the combo system in KI and I stand by my statement.

Unfortunately, it's not a fuse. I haven't fully gone through it yet.
Do the wiring harnesses for the buttons and sticks usually age well or do you have to replace a lot of those?
It depends, the Smash TV harness was Butchered and hacked up so I just replaced it. This one is actually in good shape so I'm reusing it. It really depends on how it was treated throughout it's lifetime.
So what broke the monitor chasey, moving it around unsecured or turning it on while doing buttons and sticks?! Sorry for that BTY. I'm hoping that it is a huge expense! If you end up selling it, are you going to make sure that someone doesn't end up throwing in an LCD and making a multi-cade out of it?! Awesome video Brosef! You are truly a talented and gifted individual!
