As the video states, what are some areas of your life where you still feel trapped? And where are some where you maybe feel more liberated? Definitely share your journeys below to help each other out!!

I think something that gets overlooked and I'm constantly raging about is expandable phone storage. You don't have to use invasive cloud services at all if you have enough local storage (and backup/off load to a nas or desktop occasionally). After all the best way to securely store data is to have never transmitted it to a cloud in the first place.

In my recent experience, microSD storage has been nothing but a big headache. Even if a phone I have supports it, it usually slows down the device and the card gets filled with random shit the OS and apps put there.
Only workable solution I found is using USB drives and card readers to avoid putting the card directly in the phone or just offloading stuff to the PC when my phone's internal storage fills up.

For some reason, you can plug an android phone into a windows or mac pc with a USB cable and access the files on it as if it was a USB drive, or at least you used to be able to (maybe they've changed it since I last had reason to try). Linux? It'll find the phone as a data storage device... and then the phone will refuse to let the Linux PC actually access the files.

Synology is proprietary so you're trading one ecosystem for another. Might not be as bad as the main players we think of when hearing "Big Tech", but important to point out nonetheless.

Its strange to use synology as the hookin when they are trying to make lockin with hardware.

I’d like to host my own Fediverse social networks for my family to use. Is that something a Synology NAS can do? It would need to not just be limited to my own household. It would be for my family around the world. I have done some quick searches on UA-cam in the past, but the results usually are few and pull up guides for using a third party hosting service with a subscription fee. I’d like this to be something hosted in my own home preferably a Mastodon server and a Pixelfed server. Hopefully not too complicated to setup? Is that something that exists?

    • @tonydarcy7475

Self hosting anything that needs to be accessed outside of your household is not an easy task. You need to have your own server (an old PC you don't mind leaving on 24/7 would probably be fine, but a NAS won't work as that is for file storage only, not web hosting), set up port forwarding and have a static IP address from your ISP. Even though I also like self-hosting as much as possible, I don't think it is feasible for your use case. If I was in that position, I'd either just pay the subscription fee to the provider of the open source software (or someone they recommend on their website) or purchase my own web hosting (Namecheap is competitivley priced) and self-host it on that.

@@tonydarcy7475 Thanks for the response. I do have a domain with Porkbun and I am using Neocities to host my webpage.
Neocities supporter tier is $5 a month and gives you 50GB of storage and 3000 GB bandwidth. I am not sure if they allow or are setup to host something like a Mastodon server though.
Porkbun offers hosting but I am not sure what plan I would use for hosting a server or if it's possible with them. They have something called "Easy PHP" but it seems expensive and the storage is pretty limited. Then there is "Shared CPanel Hosting" not sure what that is.
I was really hoping there would be something like Plex or Jellyfin that you could just throw up your own local hard drive and serve out from there. I guess something like that doesn't currently exist though for hosting a Fediverse server. I do have an old iMac I currently leave on 24/7, it's running Windows and hosting a Plex server.
Currently the router I use for my household is connected to a router/modem combo from my ISP. So I wouldn't know how to port forward through a double router. Or if only 1 router is handling the port forwarding? But I do have a standard modem I am going to end up using once I get around to calling the cable company to activate it, so I can get rid of their router/modem.
I looked into NameCheap. For $70 a year it says everything is unlimited. Seems too goo to be true. Maybe there are some limitations I don't understand.
Anyway I went to the PIxelfed website and was looking into their guide on self-hosting. Seems like it would be a super long and complicated process, really meant for experts. It also requires multiple different kinds of servers working in tandem. So I think I am going to take your advice and research the suggested Mastodon dedicated all in one providers and see if any of those fit my budget.

I think privacy is only the beginning of how big tech companies violate our lives. Read Unintentional by Doug Smith, a software developer who felt compelled by his faith to talk about this very subject and how many Christians’ lives are controlled. The book is not strictly religious, but he makes references to scripture in part of his arguments.

"Privacy solutions for the masses" and yet Techlore pushes an expensive option that the average person doesn't need. At least $300 for the NAS itself, then spend a few hundred more on the hard drives.
