128GB BD-XL Sony discs and Linear Tape-Open cassettes (which can cost cost around $45 for 6 TB of data storage) are better than simply using external HDD drives as backup.

I always use Syncthing, a FOSS application to synchronize files across various devices. In my case I have a one-way synchronization, pushing all photos from my local photos folder to my Server/NAS. It is pretty easy to set up, at least not harder than something like Synology Photos. It is not just available for Synology and works pretty reliably in the background, at least on non-iPhones. It could also be an option for people without a server who have a PC though (Windows, Mac Linux). Then it would always push the photos if both, the phone and the PC are running and connected to the same network . For most people, this should be the case if their PC is running. I think this might even be the best opinion. It even works securely encrypted over the internet without opening ports.
@hiamben I just noticed a minor loss of battery life. Perhaps 1-2% more per day than without. However, my phone has a rather big 5000mAh battery (4 years old now). On my old phone (S7) it would probably have drained the battery as you described.

Naomi, a good video as usual, but as a proton user i dont recommend it for photo backup just yet. you can not create folders or should i say albums, therefore if you are like me and have hundreds if not thousands of photos, it just becomes a total mess with no structure and trying to find a particular photo to view is frustrating and time consuming. eventually proton will sort this out, but they are slow to update there apps. You can also choose to only share fully encrypted copies of the files with an external device if you dont trust it, in which case you have full end to end encryption. A huge problem with proton drive is web and javascript. I'd love to try to self host stuff locally, but it would make me anxious for two reasons: 1. Can I secure access to the server easily? 2. Higher chance of drive failure than, let's say, Proton Drive. Any tips? :)
1) This topic can go quite deep but the simplest answer is to keep whatever device you're using to self-host on behind a firewall and don't expose it outside your LAN. If you need to access it when you're not home, you can setup a VPN to remote in securely. Setting up a Wireguard VPN isn't too complex if you simply follow a guide but you can also use something like Tailscale. Alternatively, if you do want to selectively expose certain services, you could utilize something like Cloudflare Tunnels via their Zero Trust service to act as a secure reverse proxy (you can even configure Cloudflare's authentication in front of these exposed applications, kind of blurring the line). 2) Redundant storage (whether it be hardware-based like a RAID controller or software-based like Unraid or ZFS) significantly helps with reducing the chance of data loss due to drive failures, but you should always keep an off-site backup for critical files. This could be another NAS or similar device left at a family members home or simply a cloud service, like Proton Drive.
QUESTION PLS, I have noticed that every so often Facebook, OneDrive offers to show you an old DELETE file from a year ago or 5 years ago. How do we stop them from storing our deleted files? Thanks
I use ResilioSync to sync my phone's photos to my computers, one of which gets only an encrypted copy, which is the only one that gets backed up to the cloud.
@@NaomiBrockwellTV You just have to create an encrypted share from a PC because there's no option to do it on the mobile app. Then you do a read/write link for the phone to use, and an encrypted link for the other PC (or sandboxed/virtualised ResilioSync copy) to use for cloud backup. Just make sure you keep a secured copy of the read/write key so you can restore from the encrypted copy if need be.
I store my own on my own cloud. No cost except to purchase and run the hard drives. I wish I had a permanent form of saving my stuff that will never go away like a forever disk. I don’t really need a HD running all the time for something I don’t always access.

yeah sure: nextcloud, raspberry pies, nas systems etc. but look at the design of the apps, look at the tweaking needed to set them up. there just is no convenience. i personally would go with e2ee icloud photos and have apple read the meta data. actually, doing local backups of the phone is the best way to go, but thats just an opinion.
Can anybody suggest if there is any way to backup my photos (taken by my phone camera) on any cloud service directly from my android phone without saving on the gallery app of my phone ? It is a hassle to delete my personal memories from my phone every time after they have been stored on cloud as I dont want to keep any photos on my phone.

This could be another NAS or similar device left at a family members home or simply a cloud service, like Proton Drive.
odd... why did you exclude things like immich, ente and maybe even tailscale 'n friends?
QUESTION PLS, I have noticed that every so often Facebook, OneDrive offers to show you an old DELETE file from a year ago or 5 years ago. How do we stop them from storing our deleted files? Thanks
i use mega. is it good?
I think so, here is our evaluation: ua-cam.com/video/yND3ogYFVp0/v-deo.html
I'm on Graphene, and my proton drive is not syncing. It says it does but it is stuck on the same remaning nulber of files. Anyone faced this issue ?
Thanks for sharing Naomi.
I use ResilioSync to sync my phone's photos to my computers, one of which gets only an encrypted copy, which is the only one that gets backed up to the cloud.
thanks for the heads up!
HOw should one accept the request to be the backup account? on my side it says that the other has not accepted but it is not clear how to accept. what is the accept action to be taken? pls help
I only have stuff backed up offline on an external drive.
Thanks!
Proton drive one of the best cloud picture or not
What about Ente? Is it good?

I love my Synology. Best investment I ever made.
Proton Drive better be able to do a full phone backup one day :)
Connect phone to PC, copy all photo's over to VeraCrypt encrypted container. Done.
I already know google can see anything stored.
So why they need to violate longer than necessary is puzzling. Or not really I should say.
yeah sure: nextcloud, raspberry pies, nas systems etc. but look at the design of the apps, look at the tweaking needed to set them up. there just is no convenience. i personally would go with e2ee icloud photos and have apple read the meta data. actually, doing local backups of the phone is the best way to go, but thats just an opinion.
Nextcloud + Photoprism FTW. How is the privacy of the Samsung Cloud?
wish there was an alternative for backing up contacts, calendars, etc...
What do u think of pcloud?
Nice video!
Mega is perhaps a good option
I use syncthing to sync my Graphene phone with my Linux Laptop and Desktop
great video!
