    I´ve got a Synology myself, bt the only problem I see here, is that you alone are responsible for everything. If you misconfigure your network or security settings, malware can find its way onto your NAS and encrypt all your stuff especially if your NAS is "always on". If you f.. up your filesystem, your files can be corrupted or are simply gone; if the drives fail, your files are gone too. If you have a mediaserver running, your NAS will never be in sleep mode and that cant be good in the long term. So, as much as I´m interested in having control over my data and be able to have it all in my personal network, i fear the moment I make a major mistake and my stuff is at a risk. So the most important things like photos, password container, keys, etc. are still backed up (encrypted) in the cloud additionaly.

      Somehow, over the past 6-7 years, I managed to accumulate 4 NAS's ( 2 QNAP's, 1 Synology, and a Terramaster ). In all of that time, I managed to never do any of the things that you cite. Just be careful. If in doubt, don't do it. Watch lots of YT videos on the particular procedure that you are contemplating. And, most of the potential problems that you cite would also apply to your desktop or laptop.

    Was expecting at least one small discussion of where privacy concerns have been exposed/breached, which was the main factor preventing me from taking the Synology NAS plunge; Sad to see none featured, but a good overall discussion nonetheless. Tq.
    ---UPDATE:--- I tried to find what I thought was some discussion of data breaches but I couldn't find the UA-cam video that I came across this 'news' and any article on data breach was imho quite minor so I think it fair to say Synology probably is highly secure (data breaches due to users poor configuration)

      I don't think Synology have been breeched (technically). I believe qnap have been, or shady practices that exposed some keys. There was one issue with Synology with a disgruntled employee that tried to blackmail them or something, but I don't think has got them breeched.
      Also, and the reason why I said technically, is the ransomware attacking Synology nas's and generally from what I understand are the older Nas where the user has left the login and pass as admin/admin.
      The biggest issue with Synology at the moment is that Synology is moving further and further into a walled garden. With the recent introduction of their drives the expectation is that they would only start supporting their own drives and not the drives from current Nas hd providers. And, in general the walled garden/proprietary is not going to be good for privacy and openness of the company.

    Thanks for the video, I was always wondering about the privacy aspect of Synology, like do they have a backdoor into your NAS...? Probably not... I used Nextcloud for several years but last year I decided to buy a Synology NAS. It does take a while to set everything up the way you want, but once it's done it is quite convenient. I'm very pleased. I've not had any issues with CalDAV syncing of contacts or calendar/reminders with iPhone. My only main gripe is how expensive their additional hardware is, like additional RAM if you want to expand or upgrade. It's extortionate!!

    I own the same NAS and my biggest problem with Synology is how disconnected they are with their primary group of consumers. Why use Google services in most Synology apps?
    Using Photos on a non-GMS phone is a pain. When they could have used OpenStreetMaps instead.

      Very interesting points! I can see it being a challenge to cater to so many different use-cases for power users, while still keeping it accessible for people like myself who would be hesitant to migrate to something that isn’t usable enough without a lot of tinkering. I’ve seen some people echo already they recreate most of what I covered in my video with their raspberry pi and other solutions. I think the largest oversight from a “primary group of consumers” POV is I can’t think of a single demographic that would prefer synology being proprietary. That’s still a big thing that I wish was a reality. Appreciate your insight 🙏-H

    I've been searching for a while, but haven't found a good answer so far, and this seems to be the perfect video to ask: can anyone recommend software that runs on a Laptop/Pi and acts like Google Drive/Dropbox, with basic streaming capabilities? I've been meaning to create a storage/basic streaming station for my network for a while now, but so far all I've found are either way over the top media servers connecting online to get metadata, or way too simple FTP'esque servers. The perfect software for me in this case, client wise, would be to just type something on the address bar, see my files and have the option to either play/see them on the browser or download them.
    Sorry if this seems lazy of me, but, again, I've been searching for a while and really have no clue where to turn to

    Self hosting is the only way to go, in environment where fediverse, federated solutions do not work. I have been using nextcloud for a long period of time. I had no problems with it. I run my private email server, but it certainly is not for everybody, but for programmers like me. Since I have set up my NAS I have never looked back. Always self host. Everything. There is no excuse for laziness. The only excuse might be lack of knowledge.

    The ds923 is what i have, overall im ok with it. The biggest issue is that they left out a gpu for transcoding.
    Overall this is ok for an introduction to nas, and the reason why i went with synology was because of hybrid raid (shr). But the rest of the stuff, video station is meh, moments is ok and passable and is probably best photo management outside of google photos. The real issue with moments is that it was good when hey released it and the external sevices are going to go leaps and bounds over synology moments and its going to be stale vey soon. The biggest issue is that hardware wont be able to keep up with these types of changes and moments will look stale.
    Also, there is this looming issue that synology is becoming a walled garden.
    So imho i wouldnt get too invested into synology dependant applicaion in case you wanted to move to something like truenas. Which imho, is very good as a nas but with a steep leaning curve.

      @@techlore Hey huge fan of the channel and generally very appreciative of the info you provide, but sorry but no - a review is not a review unless you, in reasonable detail, compare and contrast competing products.
      You flashed a screen shot of TrueNAS for a fraction of a second, but failed to mention any of Synology's direct competitors with regard to pricing or functionality, either in the off the shelf NAS boxes space or the various FOSS DIY options to use on your own hardware.
      Software like unRAID, Proxmox, OMV and TrueNAS will run on any old PC from the last 10 years, especially anything that was in it's time a "gaming PC" which will be significantly more capable than the CPU, RAM, I/O connectivity etc in off the shelf NAS boxes, and be upgradeable, expandable and repairable.
      In the UK this DS923+ without hard drives is about £600 - with 4 x 4TB drives that's going to get up to £1000 and significantly more than that if you opt for NAS standard drives or drives with higher storage capacity than 4TB.
      Without that perspective this was a 15 minute advertorial for Synology which I'm sure they're absolutely delighted with.

    • @frankboyer1490
      @frankboyer1490 5 місяців тому

      @@julian.morganHuh? Reviews don't need to mention competing products at all. Those alternatives that you mention have a steeper learning curve and if you listened to the beginning of the video, you start to understand why he went with Synology. It's a review of a device based on his and his team's use case.

    • @julian.morgan
      @julian.morgan 5 місяців тому +1

      @@frankboyer1490I would define a review as a PROCESS of comparison. If you receive a £1000 product and do not make any meaningful comparison to either competitors or alternatives then you have created sponsored content, NOT a review. Doesn't matter what you call it !
      You've effectively been paid £1000 to get 50,000 eyeballs on the Synology brand. This is massively exacerbated in this video by the number of times "NAS" and "Synology" are used interchangeably, as if they were synonyms.
      This is underlined by the simple fact that everything positive said about Synology in this video could equally accurately be said of either a DIY NAS or a a competitor's off the shelf NAS - it's simply misleading and inaccurate to ascribe the benefits, convenience and privacy of self-hosting in general and associate these qualities exclusively with any single brand, in this case Synology.
      In partial defense of this video's creators it is obvious that the Techlore team ONLY has experience with Synology, (because that's what they were given) but they don't even acknowledge that very straightforward bias.
      Lastly if it takes you months to figure out workflows using proprietary software you probably don't want to even hear that you could have done the same thing in less time with any old PC for free - that's a simple fact Synology REALLY don't want anyone to know !!

      Just bear running costs in mind when building your own server. If it's a powerful machine you could easily spend 100's of Euros in electricity bills per year - depending on your tariff. After a year or two it might even add up to a new Synology NAS cost.

    • @Jonteponte71
      @Jonteponte71 Рік тому +2

      That's only valid if you value your own time (to build, install and configure) at zero. With Synology you get a simple way of getting most of what you need without spending to much time setting it up. And that includes great backup software and raid options.
      Add docker to that, and it's basically a general purpose home server that can run anything with very low power draw. If you build on your own, you are also on your own when things go wrong.

Plus you can set up encryption ("in flight" and "at rest") of your data if you are truly paranoid about someone physically reaching the unit and opening it up for the drives. Moreover, if you follow the 3-2-1 backup rule you'll have an offsite backup running on a nightly job to provide you coverage in case something happens to your house (fire, flood, theft, etc.) and/or the device ends up broken beyond repair.

    I am at 10:23 yet, but i have to write: if it is only on the NAS, that is not backed up! Yes 2-4 disks are in the device, and data is redundant on those, but if the NAS dies and corrupts the data, that data gone.
    Combined with the video editing issue: LLT has a video about sinology, when they can set up folders, to connect two NAS together, to be the backup of the other. (So the problem above solved)
    Also if those are connected those can sync the files in a given folder (so the editor can edit locally, and before and after the 2 nas can finish the datatransfer between them over night).

    Before buying Synology, check their subreddit.
    Default packages are utter garbage, sluggish, buggy, and not receiving much support from the company.
    Plus, they (almost) don't say which exactly work on which model, and the cheaper ones (still quite pricey to be honest) don't have that many of them to begin with.
    There's not a single week without some horrendous action take by that producer when it comes to bad updates, or anticompetitive practices, that sometimes brick the mid tier drivers they repackage for premium prices.
    First and foremost, if you really want to choose them, make sure to buy one with Dicker support..
    EDIT : forgot their encryption sucks as hell, there's really low (140-250 something character limit for the PATH + NAME, I don't remember exactly, I encrypt using 3rd party, much slower but safer and more convenient)
