Here's the problem I have with the institution of royalty (not the individual royals) - It is the justification and the living, breathing symbol of acceptance, the acceptance of the notion that one man can be, simply by circumstance of birth, better than another man, more worthy than another man. I cannot accept that notion.

2. There will never be a revolution in Britain. Too lazy. Too spoiled. Too engrained in the culture of believing that a posh accent somehow makes a person 'better'. That being born into money somehow makes a person 'better'. It's in the culture to believe this nonsense.
3. The cultural need to be governed. To be controlled, which, I think leads on from the previous point of being spoiled, and expecting others to live your life for you ('you' as a plural).
4. The mass-non-acceptance that the Empire is dead. That is quite mind-boggling.
5. A few more, but I've gone numb
6. Too gullible.
7. Nobody is even aware the press is bent.
8, Nationalistic egotism is rife and getting more problematic by the day.
9. People don't know the first thing about micro-advertising using modern tech, they are tracking trends and conversations and using these motivated demographics like the far right by siding with them.

The national anthem is about an old lady who lives off our taxes.
Maybe if the song was about the country, the nation itself, the focus might change for the better.

How is this sovereign grant financed?

@@Philljag.Under the sovereign grant act (2011) it pays for one part of the total running costs of the Royal family. In 2021 it amounted to £87.5 million, as this is an unexpected expense which is not covered by the grant, how will the settlement be financed?
I hope this is the start of their downfall…imagine kneeling or calling another human person your highness..
I'd call Andrew (and all the others) 'your lowness'.
Look into the people who are so keen to do so and you'll see a mountain of self-interest.
Let's hope so none of them wherever they are in Europe should exist not just the British royal family all of them
As an American, I find the British class system incomprehensible. My country certainly has its problems and is far from perfect --- events of recent years show this --- but the concept of a "royal family" wreaks of arrogance. Addressing another human being as "your highness" is just insanity. How Brits can accept this as normal is beyond my capacity to understand.
It's just our history and tradition. America was formed in a different way, a country founded by those who left Britain because they were persecuted for their religious beliefs wanted to create a country where personal liberty was of upmost importance. That's where the root of American culture comes from. I find the American gun laws incomprehensible, as a British person, but it's part of your culture of extreme personal liberty.
@@Andygb78 ...I do not disagree with your analysis in which you conclude that personal liberty is a foundational element of American society. But to use “history” and “tradition” as a justification for having a class system that elevates one caste above all others on the basis of birth is, in my view, ultimately indefensible. It is precisely this attitude of unaccountable privilege that gives rise to the monstrous conduct of “Prince” Andrew and others of his class. In the Declaration of Independence, America’s Founders asserted that “All men are created equal.” This they got right, and while my country has often failed to live up to this ideal --- its embrace of slavery in its early years is an obvious example --- equality remains a guiding principle of American society. Brits could invoke this aspect of the American conceptualization of a just society as a means of improving itself and finding redemption for clinging far too long to its indefensible class system. Failing this, people like "Prince" Andrew will continue to make a mockery of your otherwise admirable nation.
The families of the people who turned up in 1066 still own most of the UK in one way or another.
The French had the right idea of what to do with recalcitrant and decadent royalty.
... and then, as they often do, the revolutionaries found the line, crossed it and were justly punished for their crimes, meeting the same fate as those they murdered.

He gave it to someone he never met,
For something he never did.
People can say what they like about how the British monarchy basically has ceremonial powers, but in a situation like this, it’s pretty clear that that is a load of nonsense. Wealth and prestige is real power, not ceremonial
That and the fact that the ceremonial powers include very real powers to vet laws that come before parliament. Look into how the Queen has been secretly amending laws to ensure her family are not subject to the same taxes etc as the rest of us. That's what our head of state has been doing: serving herself.
Guilty as sin
Can anybody tell me how andrew is any different to Margaret Thatchers friend jimmy saviille?
Savilles mother wasn't a monarch, everything else is identical
Andrew didn't get the keys to the hospital?
Oh my!. Well said sir O'Brien.
The royals have always been presented as this great example to us lesser mortals. After Diana I think that was severely dented but they managed to overcome it, sweep her under the carpet and rehabilitated Camilla. I believe that after Andrew, whether or not they continue, they will never again be seen in the same light nor have the same level of deference.
Forget transparency, just pay up to sweep things under the carpet lol
Just confirms That with money and privilege you can buy your way out of" having been unlawful" with out getting into a court room . Privilege Privilege. Where is the even handed and equal in law that we are subject to ? Seems some are more equal than others ? Don't think the innocent post masters and mistresses would have ended up in prison etc if they all had privilege and money ? 700 times ?
He might have got out of the courtroom but we all know how the land lies, I wonder how many other victims there were as the old adage you never get caught the first time.
That equality in law never existed. It's always been a pretense so that the majority won't rise up against oppressors. They let some of us through the gate now and then to maintain the appearance of fair and balanced. It's all a farce.
@@BobK5 that's a FACT!
O'Brien's spot on in his assessment. Monarchies are useless anachronisms, and no, they don't attract tourists. It's your history that attracts them, just as does France's or Italy's.

@@BakTrak1 Working? None of them have the faintest idea of what real work involves. Come on, we'd all live to 95 if our working and private lives were as pampered and cushioned as theirs.
@@BakTrak1 What work? The Queen was not always an old woman. How many hours a day did she put in during her younger for her life of total comfort and privilege? I wonder what her hourly rate can be calculated as being?

In fairness, you have the country you deserve. The British have put up with this medieval set up without the slightest whimper of protest, while the rest of the world moved on into the 21st century. Only you can change it and while a large portion of the population continue to doff their caps to people with posh accents nothing will change. I lived in rural Norfolk in the 1990's and it changed my view of the English completely. The only difference between now and then is that they don't bother hiding the corruption anymore.
“Woke” seems to mean that someone cares about something or someone that the person using the term doesn’t care about or doesn’t like.
That's what a "woke" person would say to try and cover up their own "wokeness"
@@AdamSmith-de5oh How would you define "woke" then?
Being woke is all about awareness of injustice and not "sleeping" on it, in other words don't be oblivious because social awareness is uncomfortable. That discomfort is what wakes you up.
@@AdamSmith-de5oh What's the opposite of being woke? Being oblivious? Being willfully ignorant? Being so mired in selfishness that any awareness of other's is uncomfortable?

Andrews interview where he mentioned the Falklands war and said he couldn't sweat really exposed the contempt he has for ordinary people. We saw a man that believed the peasants are fools and will believe literally anything he says. And why wouldn't he?
I live in Scotland and there are a handful of families that own 90% of the land. Land that had belonged to clans who were forced off it in the land clearances. Yet even when we voted for independence there was no plan to simply take the land back from people that didn't earn it, they were given it for supporting the elites that oppressed the masses. I read vast tracks of Scottish land are being sold to foreign investors but these people had no real right to that land in the first place.
Remember that working-class men only got the vote in 1918 after WW1. On the 100th year anniversary of universal male suffrage that wasn't mentioned or celebrated as the powers that be knew questions would be asked. 100 years earlier the Peterloo Massacre happened when soldiers slaughtered 700 men asking for the vote in Manchester. Why are we not told about these things? Why did we instead celebrate wealthy women getting the vote in 2018?
18 year olds only got the vote in the 60s in the UK.
@@billgreen576 - Sure, the UK was one of the first nations to lower it from 21 to 18. I believe it should be 18 although in Scotland it was reduced to 16 for the independence referendum.
Anyway, this is different to the fact that my grandfather and millions of other working-class men were forced to fight in WW1 for a nation that didn't consider them worthy of the right to vote. Ironically the Germans did allow universal suffrage for all males from 1867. So this means WW1 was British subjects without basic voting rights killing fighting free German men. We weren't fighting for freedom as we didn't have freedom. We were slaves fighting for our masters.
