A moment of your time, please: 1. I never once claimed to be an expert on IP laws or tried to explain IP laws to anyone. I'm just posting my findings. What little ones are left after all these years. I don’t expect game devs to respond back to me because I don't have a following and some of them have distanced themselves from the internet, the industry, or this 20-year-old game entirely. That makes my work much harder because of it. I sometimes mess up facts because of it. Even when I double or triple check. 2. The issue isn't "DURR HOW DO IP LAW WERK?" That’s the straw man that keeps getting shoved in my face. The issue is Sega's double standards when it came to handling these C&Ds. SEGA ENCOURAGED FAN GAMES BEFORE AND AFTER SORR, but they pick and choose which ones get shut down sometimes. Some Sega fan games thrive and some get taken down. THAT’S THE ISSUE. The Taxman made a non-profit Sonic fan game and Sega let him handle the mobile Sonic ports and Sonic Mania (a damn fine sonic game too). The SORR team makes a non-profit SOR fan game and Sega shut them down. There are more instances of certain Sega fan games getting shut down over the years. I could've gone more into detail about it, but this is a review of the SORR game itself. This is a gaming channel after all. SORR is, and has always been, a freeware game. Don't believe me? Here: sorr.forumotion.net/t86-sorr-project-history 3. BTW, the "unreasonable demands" was an obscure Space Ghost: Coast 2 Coast reference. Props to anyone who gets it. I excel in making references that only 5 people on earth will get. That's my fault. And if you still feel the need to insult me or leave a thesis paper in the comments, don’t worry. This channel is doing just fine without you. I just wanted to honor a request from one of my subscribers. Nothing more.
PSA - I absolutely love SORR, but 5.2 is pretty terrible as the AI is insane and irritating. It came from nowhere and it's unclear how it's linked to 5.1, but I would recommend 5.1 to everyone and 5.2 to no-one as it is far too hard.
A very important thing to note is that Christian Whitehead was NOT hired BECAUSE of his fangames. He pitched his Retro Engine remake of Sonic CD to Sega. That pitch impressed them and so they hired him to do the Remakes on mobile. That in turn gave him a good name and good will from sega. So than the team pitched Sonic Mania to Sega. Point is the circumstances of SORR and Mania are completely different. It still is weird that Sega shut it down and kinda shitty too but they didnt just hire Christian Whitehead to make the mobile remakes because they saw "Retro Sonic" (the Sonic fangame the retro engine was made for if i am not mistaken)
Tons of easter eggs. Double dragon 2 nes helicopter stage. Train stage inspired by turtles in time. SOR4 got inspired by it and added it . The Tomato store from shenmue and the music where you unlock the extras is the tomato store theme. Definitelly a sega fan's dream
Streets of Rage Remake is the definitive Streets of Rage game. Yes, I even consider this better than Streets of Rage 4, even after Mr. X Nightmare DLC. This is to me, the best beat 'em up game ever made.
Did you guys played final fight ultimate lns?, I thougt that sor remake was the best fan game and now I guess it is the second. Whatever they are the 2 best beat'em up games ever made by far for fans
Totally agree. I’ve tried to play streets of rage four recently after finally acquiring it and it’s just no comparison to remake. I played remake for like 12 years straight though, so maybe I’m just used to that lol. 4 is definitely good but man it’s just lacking something imo
I've lost track of how many times I've played through this fan remake. It literally never gets old with all of the characters, paths you can take and things you can unlock. So fun.
I'm glad you covered SOR REMAKE! This game is so good! If SOR4 never came out and we were left with this game, I woulda been okay with this. It would be great if Sega made this available for the current systems.
18:18 The game also gives you the ability to change out soundtracks if you have your own music. A man by the username of Iceferno has produced a few albums of original SOR styled music that people can use in Remake.
oh yes the remixes by Iceferno on s0rr remake are fiere. I can't post links because of scammers and bots used to do that, but search "Gardeweg - All I Want (Streets Of Rage 3 Remix)"
Streets of Rage Remake is easily the best fangame I've played, I love the "compilation/remake" way in that it integrates content from the original trilogy in a seamless manner, the amount of content is incredible. My favorite feature is the ability play with SoR 1&2 versions of characters, all with different moves and stats. If this game came out in recent years it would have garnered so much attention, so it's great to see videos like these bringing more exposure to it.
I don't know if i forgot to tweak the difficulty balance or something when i last played it, because i remember playing the game just fine and then the final boss (Shiva and Mr. X, the SoR2 route) knocked ALL of my remaining lives and continues. Like, the difficulty spike was THAT obnoxiously excessive. Kinda put me off from playing it more, but i still want to give it another shot. EDIT: so update, i managed to get much more comfortable playing V5.2, basically i copied the option configurations i had from 5.1 and also *left one of the new balancing options from v5.2 set to "ORIGINAL",* because if you set it to "BALANCED" it weakens some of the player characters, particularly the SoR3 versions which i like to use the most, so that's probably what was messing my experience.
GrooveMaster303 gave his permission for us to use his music in our feature length Streets of Rage Fan Film “Rage: Unleashed” coming out later this year 😁 SOR is the best franchise Sega ever created and SORR is unbelievably good.
@@8StringFuryGaming Thanks dude 😄👊🏻 We’ve also got the legendary IceFerno on board as well! 😁🔥 Search “Streets of rage movie film teaser” and click the thumbnail with Estel 👍🙂 I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I totally agree with this. I was sitting here thinking the other day that I really think this is my favorite game of all time. I’ve put well over 1000 hours in it in the last 12 years. That’s OCD levels of insane for a beat ‘Em up. And I still play through it like 5x a week on my Steam Deck. Based on that it’s GOTTA be my favorite game ever lol
I followed their development up through version 1.2.1, or whatever the first 'official' post Sega takedown edition was. Didn't know there was a new build as little as three years ago. Gotta go get it. Great video!
From what I remember, there was a big change in the latest version with the AI from 5.1. The previous made the ai smarter depending on the difficulty, whereas the current one, even on easy, the enemy is super smart. It's been 3 years, so I can't be sure, but I remember it was polarizing. At least they have an ai tool to tweak that. That's the best way to solve any issues with your game; add some damn options.
I thought something was up when the enemies started dodging my attacks on normal around the 15:23 mark. It's like some kind of input reading or something. I gotta give props to the SORR team for making competent and challenging AI. And we definitely have plenty of options to tweak the AI as we see fit.
The only music theme then is not included in the remake is The Poets III from Bare Knuckle 3 and is not a suprise because that theme is lost media (even the original composers forgot this theme then they not included in the live concerts). I discovered that theme by accident in youtube then is actually a mix with Blood in the floor by Michael Jackson and then i finded the original theme and a remix with Pokemon Black & White 1&2 setup but the channel then uploaded that videos was deleted so... is more lost media then anything.
Thank you so much for this underrated and detailed overview of the game. I nearly forgot about this game's existence due to the legal reasons. Despite the time needed for unlocking some content, it looks worth it considering how much features was added. I'm more than tempted to try this game out now.
Great video SoR remake was amazing its a shame I think Sega maybe could have done something similar to Sonic Mania with SoR remake. I really appreciate and thank you to all the people that made and contributed to SoR remake such amazing talented people
Its incredible this is available for free and other companies dare to sell things like Anthem for 60 dollars...... It would be fantastic to see this released on ps4......
What is the name of the song in 1st minute of video, and the song at 19:28? Really good video. I agreed with everything you said which is rare to happen for me. I also love the extra information you put in the video, like when you mention the names of some of the artists for the music. Really good and rare to see info like that in moat videos.
20:18 is why this game is worth its weight in gold and held in high regard. Sega had one job to bring streets of rage back yet opted for the "4th" instalment (which I'll likely never play) and then the weak-ass copyright takedown. watching this review re-sparked my interest in playing this again. the only complaint I have is there have been some instances where my entire progress has been wiped booting the game up but nothing in this game is game-breaking. I wish it was on steam or something similar. Top retrospective and review. your content is often so good I revisit your videos on occasion.
One of the greatest games I have ever played. Period. So much variety. So much to enjoy. I'd love to play it for my channel but I'm honestly worried Sega might do a Sega and claim the video. They seem to have a REAL problem with this one.
Also last thing, Glad to find another big fan of SORR . Super under rated game and really inspiring to make your own passion fan game project like all of these guys did.
Great video!!!! You got me playing this again =D. You should check out streets of rage 2 New era by gsaurus and Final Fight LNS by CON 5 DUROS. They're doing great work for us beat um ups players. Why would they add a command moves for the 3 blitz moves? When you can't execute/buffer the inputs during the auto combo... You have to stop attacking. Hit the combo button, then quickly down, forward, up to do a blitz. During that time your just standing there like a toe tickling psychopath, while all the enemies beat you up. It's just so strange that you have to hit button. Then do the inputs.

The fan games are always better because they fans actually give a shit and are passionate about what they make. If these game companies had any brains whatsoever, they'd just hire these fan creators at a discount and save money while ALSO making more money with a better product! But because they're insecure untalented losers, they have to send cease and desists that ultimately end up failing. Yes, Streets of Rage Remake is THE best Streets of Rage game existing out there! Far better than Streets of Rage 4 (which I own) and worth $30 or more, if it was an official game. It's THAT good! Its bizarre that it's free, while Streets of Rage 4 cost money and had that garbage pseudo-anime art style attached to it.
