I think you underrated Dread to be honest. I might be a little biased because I’m a Metroid fan but although it’s pretty linear there is sequence breaking and the controls are absolutely air tight and feel better than any other one of these games that I can remember. The claustrophobic feeling of the game is absolutely intended and just kinda the vibe the series has always gone for and although you didn’t like it, that adds to the tension that makes you wanna like kill everything and succeed in the game. I thought the visuals were great and that wasn’t really mentioned but the game looked incredible. As far as wanting a future game with multiple endings…that may be cool for some of these games with just a single installation but a franchise that is so like cinematic and where the ending of the previous game sets up the next one, that’s a little unreasonable to ask for. I agreed with most of what you said but it’s the only metroidvania I played like 4-5 times in a row when I bought it. Most of even the games I consider very good won’t even get me to play thru a second time. A tier game in my opinion but I’m just a fan. U were fair with it other than hovering in C tier for a little while haha cmon

You’re correct in saying the controls are air tight. Samus has never controlled so well. And the game does look incredible. But I don’t factor these things very heavily when it comes to the tier list, unless the controls are bad. That’s an issue regardless of genre.
I’ll have to play through it completely again, though I don’t know if it’d change my mind. The controls, combat, and presentation are all S tier, so I can comfortably say it’s an S Tier video game, but because the exploration isn’t very rewarding, it’s tough to say it’s an excellent MV, if that makes sense.

@@MetroidvaniaGuruI won’t argue with your placement since your opinions are fair across the border, even though I rate Dread as the best Metroid game. But I will say I strongly recommend Dread Mode (one hit kill mode) if you haven’t tried it. I initially thought it would be impossible but I was able to beat it and it was my favorite run of the game. It really brings to light how tight the controls really are and how well designed the bosses are. Additionally, it makes you take the room to room gameplay slower which made me appreciate the level design, environments, and enemy placement a lot more.
P.S. I also love Ender Lilies lol. I got it on sale years ago and never played it then finally decided to play it in 2023. I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner since I was hooked. I got 100% and all 3 endings. Great game.

I absolutely adored Metroid Dread. I thought the route curation was a brilliant way to help onboard new fans, and then the intentionally added sequence breaks were there to let you off the ride for repeat play through if you want.
The only actual complaint I have is with the clear video gameness of the EMMI zones. Obviously you can’t have them hunting Samus all over the map if you want people to push through to the end, but it’s still ridiculous that these indestructible robots that have been programmed to specifically hunt you down have less room to roam than my apartment-bound chiweenie. Taking your map-recontextualization point to heart, I think a brilliant and workable solution would been to have a couple the EMMI zones slowly expand as the game progresses. Since there are already a couple zones that the game pushes you through early before bring you back later, it would be simultaneously cool and horrifying to realize that, since you were last through this way, Emma has expanded her borders and converted an extra room or two into her hunting ground.
Extra environmental storytelling without sacrificing gameplay.

Playing through Metroid Dread now as a matter of fact, so funny that you are reviewing it. My biggest ding against the game would be that it is quite tedious to get from one area to the other. I would want to backtrack and pick up loot but things were so damn far away, and I would only be rewarded with a missile tank the vast majority of the time...

I liked Blasphemous 2, but I still prefer the first one. The second game I found too linear after the first half. You have to get A and B appears and you have to do B to get C to get D. Blasphemous 1 was more like Dark Souls "you need this things, go find them".
Gameplay (movement+combat) is superior in 2, but the bosses don't feel as epic as in the first one.
Let's hope they do some expansions in the future like the amanecidas and the true "true" ending of 1. That'd be great, the story didn't convince me too much.
Oh I remembered, I thought that for the true ending I had to fight the last boss with 100% guilt, so they wouldn't be able to combine at the end or something, because the penitent would be very impure. That also makes the last boss more interesting, as it hits like a truck and you can't use magic. I think something like that would've been better than equipping the 4 altar pieces and burning them in that room.

Loved both Blasphemous, but first one (which is the final version, not the 2019 one) had more immersion, the atmosphere was darker, more cruel and everything was in a rotting world. BL 2 is more bright overall. As many i do miss the Pixel Cutscene that were really distrubing even if they were basic. The lack of executions hitted me, in BL1 each enemy was having his own violent execution, in 2 there are like 3 or 4 overall. Last none of the weapons have the charisma of the Mea Culpa, maybe cause in the first one much of the lore was centered on the sword and his story while in BL2 they are just weapons you pick for some reasons from a statue.
Still l enjoed it a lot and a DLC should be on work according to IGN

I greatly preferred blasphemous 2 over blasphemous 1, and it’s not even close. I liked the world design, animations, combat, music, character growth/build options…metroidvania aspect. All of it. I will admit that the first game was a little more grotesque and moody, but I could care less that the bosses were bigger and weirder looking. It was such a major detraction for me that your move set was so limited. I felt like I was just looking for windows to do basic sword swings 90% of the time.
I liked that there seemed to be more nimble/human sized bosses in blasphemous 2. It just appealed to me a bit more.
I agree that the cutscenes were too clean, and didn’t really match the mood, but that’s such a minor thing for me in my overall rating of a game. Gameplay always takes priority for me, and blasphemous 2 is just much more satisfying in that way. It doesn’t waste as much of your time, and it’s not clunky. It always felt like a chore to backtrack in the first game, and the combat felt so rigid. I will probably never go back and replay it after experiencing the second game
I can’t wait for a dlc or two. It’s gonna take what is basically my favorite metroidvania (next to hollow knight) and hopefully elevate it to a new height

Never understand the complaint of Metroid dreads linearity. The prime games aren’t super open and everyone loves them fusion also has color coded locked doors and people also love that. Oh and Metroid 2/Samus returns/am2r are also linear unless you play new game+ but it’s still way slower to go to the final area in am2r and play backwards or jump around areas due to the game being designed with linearity. If your saying Metroid dreads linear is bad compared to games like hollow knight then I agree but compared to other Metroid dread has the most sequencing breaking besides super which allow you to get updates early or even skip ‘em is and bosses.

New subscriber here, awesome video and channel! I love your genre veteran perspective, you frequently manage to hit thoughts and feelings I also had, but was unable to articulate properly. I come, mostly, from an action and JRPG background, and MVs have been a staple of my game diet only for the last 3-4 years, so I treat this list more like recommendations, and you've given me "homework" for months.
I don't know how popular this sentiment is, but I feel that striving for objectivity in reviewing is kind of a trap, and would love to see you embrace the subjectivity, inherent in making a tier list, like, if you love Ender Lilies that much (I also do), there's nothing wrong in placing it in S tier. I mean, personally, since Circle of the Moon was my first and only MV as a kid, I would probably place it high, despite agreeing with all your criticisms on it. I even played it recently as part of the Advance Collection and I definitely felt its age and shortcomings, but still loved it.

Too bad you don't appreciate puzzles in MVs man, I love the variety and change of pace that some quality puzzling adds to them. I suppose thats the reason why that wheel doesn't have one of my favorites: "Phoenotopia:Awakening" since it's more like a 2D Zelda.
However, leaving the puzzle thing aside, I find your take on the genre spot on. Keep up the good work!

"Dead or school" is not a metroidvania at all. It is a 2D action RPG. I myself thought it is before I bought it. It has different levels. You go from level to level. The map of them kinda resembles a metroidvania map slightly, but it's very far from that. This is a very PS2 Era clunky hack and slash RPG that's divided into stages. It's a very mediocre game at best, and definitely has nothing to do with a metroidvania.

I love you tier list videos and don't want to be too critical because overall i love this channel, i just wanted to mention that i'm not sure what the point is of the metroidvania purity test.
Maybe if it strays too far fans of the genre won't like it? But then again, games that fuse genres are fantastic. I think games like Jedi fallen order, Dark Souls and Elden ring can wear a metroidvania tag with pride, while also being excellent games. I agree that the absolute BEST metroidvanias should have that flavor as a core part of the experience, but fantastic games that are lighter on the metroidvania should probably be high on the list as well (in my opinion of course).
Maybe all of this is too say that i highly agree that Dread is a linear game that, in part, betrays its metroidvania roots. But i also think it's a 10/10 game that undoubtedly is in part, a metroidvania. I would've placed it probably in the A tier for the exact same reasons you placed Blasphemous in S, even though its not a "hard" metroidvania experience, its an amazing game.
Besides that i thought this was a great video and great list so far.

I’m glad you like my content!
The “Purity” test is used as a form of assessment. It’s tough to objectively rank something if there’s no criteria to evaluate (I’m a learning professional and a college prof if you couldn’t tell 😆). But it’s only part of how I assess MVs.
I use two major criteria to assess: The 4 Pillars of Metroidvanias (the “Purity” Test), and the Characteristics of an Excellent Metroidvania (Combat, Abilities, Progression, Exploration, Atmosphere, and Narrative).
I made these criteria up, so I don’t think you’ll find them referred as such anywhere else 😆
Anyway, concerning the “Purity” test, as you probably know, I’m pretty lax on it. And by lax, I mean I look at MVs on a spectrum and don’t mind it when MVs mess with the formulas.
For example, one of the Pillars is that an MV should be a Platformer. Knight Which is not a platformer; however, It nails everything else an MV should, and the “spirit” of its movement feels platformer-y. So, I consider it an MV, but it takes a significant hit on the assessment. Thus, its placement at D. But don’t get me wrong. Knight Witch could have scored higher had it done some things differently.
As for Dread, there’s no doubt it’s an S Tier video game. I’d personally give it a 9 or 10 out of 10. But as an MV, I’m assessing it with different, highly specialized standards. Dread took a significant hit on Exploration and a little ding on Progression. Of course, each of the Characteristics of an Excellent Metroidvania has sub-categories. For instance, for Exploration, there’s a category for “Is it Rewarding?” which then has sub-categories that focus on the rewards MV players would be looking for, such as “Loot, Gear, Upgrades, Secrets, Etc.” And because the “loot” you find in Dread isn’t very exciting and actually becomes dull about mid-game (missile and bomb expansions, energy tanks/pieces of energy tanks), the game ranked poorly.
I hope this helps with my reasoning behind why I rank things the way I do. I might publish my scoring system some day, but I figured people would find that boring.

    • @metamyther
      @metamyther 9 місяців тому

I appreciate the purity test because sometimes i am looking for exactly that type of genre game. if i want a linear experience, there are a lot of other genres that service that.@@MetroidvaniaGuru

I have but haven’t played blasphemous 2, though I’m really looking forward to playing it when I get to it. As for Metroid Dread, it as good but not great. I didn’t like the Emmies (is that how you spell it?), anyway the fact they were in their own little areas just sort of made them an annoying. It was less like a cool part and more of a place to get by to keep going with the game. And the fact you had to keep going through them to backtrack was just annoying. I would much rather they or just one shows up here and there and you never know when. And then you could have had them for whatever reason go away. Though I just really don’t like the trope of the unbeatable enemy.
Also way down in the list, why is F.I.S.T so low? I though it was good and had some cool upgrades. The combat was good. It was a little long but it was over a solid game. (Yes I know it was in a past video, but I’m lazy)
