Ive been wanting to play deaths gambit… im on an xbox series x btw. But all the reviews say there are save issues with the game deleting files randomly.. so i feel like it’s a waste of money if thats the case. Anyone know if this has been fixed??? 🤔

I feel like you should have a "not a metroidvania" tier. A lot of great games get put into the F tier unnecessarily because of that imo, whereas I get this is a metroidvania tier list, but just feels unfair to be in F tier even when it's a great game otherwise.

I started following your channel because our opinions aligned fairly well compared to other enthusiast. In fact, the one time I thought I would totally disagree with you because I really like puzzle heavy games I tried out Greak… Not a fan didn’t finish. It seemed like it would be so much better than it was lesson learned.

Salt and Sanctuary is one of my favourite games of all time. The world is very interesting if you read all the descriptions and stuff. Also contrary to what you said, I think the soundtrack is awesome, one of my favourites.

where is Strider 2014 ? The 5 best Metroidvania's are Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Metroid Dread, Strider 2014, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night & Super Metroid.

I agree that the combat and movement felt clunky at times but pretty much everything else you disliked I loved. Especially the atmosphere of this game was so thick and I thought it sounded and looked great. It is a really hard recommendation though. I had the weirdest journey with this game as I absolutely loved everything about up to defeating the first boss which is one of my favourite boss fights in any game I've played. Then the game got so hard so fast that I just couldn't make any progress no matter how hard I tried. I have no idea how reached any ending in 6 hours I think I spent that kind of time trying to get anywhere at all past the first boss. Eventually I noticed it had the trials of fear update and I have no idea if this was new or not for the update but I restarted the game and turned on most of the assists and loved it all the way to final (don't know if it was the true) boss. It was still quite the challenge though not gonna lie. It sits in a weird spot being pretty much as enjoyable as it is hard to recommend ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interesting video and transparency for your processes. That's quite a *lot* to take in at first, even more so with the possible overlap in the columns, but having a structure is useful for getting one's thoughts in order and seeing how the grey matter machine ticks. I don't really know how i'd do rankings myself, only MV i've played is Cookie Cutter (nice to see that voiceover trailer footage in the Metrics Breakdown section!) and i thought it was a good time. Just... felt good, played well, I really like the world and am eager for more, but there's stuff outside of it as a playable product that are part of the reason why I'm so excited for more. One of those being that Stefano (the lead dev) has proverbially fought tooth and nail to be able to make a story that's for a large part, the culmination of his tastes and things he loves in media, from games to comic to paintings to music and the like. And making sure that it's not limited by a publisher trying to extend their influence or make it more marketable. He still regularly teases many ideas for the full story he wants to tell on Twitter, from characters and areas to weapons and questlines. I really hope Subcult Joint can craft and tell this tale in full, stick the landing, and be a good game throughout. Being able to make a full game and world like that, and being granted the blessing to continue working on it because it has reached many people and the sales are good, is very special. It is possible and I hope that many good people will be able to do so throughout time. To tie it back to the ratings: a game being a passion project, regardless of the story behind it, does definitely NOT exempt it from criticism. People should be able to receive what they dish out and keep a level mind about it. And I do wonder what ups and downs and possible new issues, which hopefully can be resolved, the new updates and additions can bring. Based on your criteria, I assume that CC as is would receive an Average rating on the explorative part. The second half of the game has the levels follow each other up in a linear fashion: from the Crystal Pits to the swamp area to B@$%ardville to the Golden Tower. So i'm curious if the area(s) in the firstmost big update will have some choices on where to go first, or if they will be linear from there on as well. And how that may affect people's experience with the game. Either way, thank you for the video, wish you a good rest of the week, and have a good one.

This system has a really weird quirk in that it measures the quality of a metroidvania until the f-teir where it sort of overlaps with measuring a games metroidvanianess. If it lacks a pillar it is automatically f-tier no matter how good the game is. This might be your opinion ofc but that implies metroidvania games are superior to all other games. I'm half joking ofc but that and another thing stood out to me. Seems by this rubrik that most b-tier games on the list are worth playing and b-tier to me just has the sound of being sub par. Maybe a universal problem with tier lists/me tho.

I love this channel, I've played so many metrovanias that I otherwise would never have heard of, some real good ones and some stinkers but it's always fun.

This is a very nice explanation. For my personal ranking I am very subjective, I think of it as a game hitting the right notes - when it does it's an excellent MV and I've never for myself found a more objective formula (despite liking metrics as well) that satisfies on a personal level. When it comes together well it does, and when it doesn't, it doesn't. I have certain sensibilities of course, but there are games that objectively should work and just don't for me and the other way around - and depending on how that goes I usually find it fairly easy to see where I should place them on any kind of internal ranking. This of course works personally, but less so for your goals. This is a very good method.

I don't know fir me - I did not play the game I just saw it here - unsighted not being a 2d side scrolling platformer is not really a metroidvania... I mean I get it has features that metroidvanias also have but that roguelikes, action adventures or action RPGs also have. So if this is a metroidvania then why not a ton of other top down action adventure games?

I think ur definition is reasonable but the confines of this subgenere of 2d action platformers is nowadays quite blurred: soulsvanias, rogue-vanias, shmup-vanias... tons of run and guns would fall into this definition too. And then this priority of Metroid over Meagaman I honestly also find debatable ;) for me I just see 2d action platformers and that's it ;)

Great video explaining your method, which i would say is very scientific and empirical (like i would do it)! I totally resonate with your descriptions, maybe some will not because obviously how much someone likes a game or not is based on a lot of factors and emotions.. Your tierlist tries to be less personal and a little more objective which helps (at least me) to decide what to try first! Of couse all the games from S to i would say B tier are pretty good and everybody should give them a go and decide for themselves 👍

I can’t wait to play this one I got Balatro “the poker rouge like” and it took over my brain but this game keeps drawing to it and I’m super curious. Watching carefully but I don’t mind spoilers cause my memory is crap.

1:07:08 can’t believe you like d the puzzles! Usually you hate on them. I loved them in this game and how they incorporated all of the unique abilities. But the game didn’t feel like a puzzlevania like Greak

Also with lost Crown, I was completely motivated to play different styles and use every weapon and test out so many different bills because the game felt so different. There’s obviously a few optimized builds you can get, but it was really enjoyable to play a different style of game than I’m used to, just for the fun of it because it was fun playing and it always felt exciting to try something new or max out a certain ability

Oh man, I don’t know what it was with the beginning of Prince of Persia, but I almost gave up the game and tossed it because I was glitching into walls all over the place for the first four hours of gameplay. The game seems to work almost completely seamlessly when you have all of the power ups and all of the special moves but early on it was very easy to get caught in a wall and have to reboot and lose a lot of time. I got a few of the abilities pretty much never happened. I played a day of release so I’m not sure if there were updates later. After that, though, I love the game and was so excited that it’s the first Ubisoft game that has an asked me to participate in all of their normal BS in the extra DLC that they had isn’t necessary and is pretty much purely cosmetic so I didn’t feel like I was missing out.

I won't say it's the best thing since sliced bread, or the worst thing not worth your time. It was just a very solidly designed game. They didn't overscope it, and it's characters each had meaning even when they were simplified.
