The 96 was a bad ass just always had a odd smell coming from the engine after driving it for many years then not smelling it for many more . I had a 96 should pull on the side me the other day and I must admit I miss that smell remind me of the 90'
@@myquickjab2098 I had to replace a water pump once. Luckily found a rebuild kit for $60... a new water pump itself was $500. That was the only time I had a smell... I drive a Speed 3 now... however I sometimes wish I still had the SHO... would love to find a nice garage kept grandma's SHO for sale one day...
@@cyberrednec No, not completely, the intake and valve train is Yamaha, that is where it ends. The rest is a Ford/Cosworth, engineered where the F1 motors are designed in Canada! When you own one of these cars (coming up on 24 years now) you learn a thing or two about them. And yes, I still own a '97.

I just found out that not only is the steering system made by ZF (same one BMW uses) but the computer controlled struts (all four in the case of 96-98) are also German made by the same Co. ! I heard years ago that the wheels were made in Italy, I have to research that, just have not got around to it. LOL

I can't get over how great this engine sounds! Such a shame it wasn't used in more cars like the Vulcan or Duratec sixes. Best-sounding 235 hp of all time! I'd love to see one in an early 80s Mustang or Camaro just for the hell of it, it's not like it has less power.

Also, because of the low HP per liter, it ought to be very unstressed most of the time, so should last very long provided you take care to change the oil and stuff. Finally, also from the low HP/L, it must feel very strong compared to smaller 175-hp engines.
@@nthgth previous owner mistreated it but surprisingly still runs like new only thing is it leaks oil from the valve train area since some bolts are missing but we are in the process of rebuilding or maybe even do an LS swap
Damn, That sounds freaking amazing! My dad has a 99 SHO and loves it. They are great cars, It's too bad Ford really skimped out on a decent Transmission and of course, the Cam failure.
The cams are an easy fix though. Just need to pull the valve covers, and spot weld the crossover gears to the cams. It's actually a fairly quick job. I did mine in an afternoon.
God I love it, my very first car was a 2002 Taurus SES I fell in love with that thing. But a few thousand miles past 100k the transmission was completely blown it was the worst day of my life that was my baby
I had a friend with a 1998 Ford Taurus DOHC with an aftermarket V8, although the car has numerous problems and bad rust. I've had a 2006 Ford Taurus SEL (Completely stock) for about 2 years and 114k and I think it's a great starter car. I have some minor interior mods. Unfortunately modern cars with their 4 cylinders are more efficient and powerful than the older V6s and V8s, although their sound is awful. I was thinking about doing an exhaust mod on mine. You can't beat the reliability of the Taurus engines though.
Haha man that sounds great. Takes me back to my high school days when I had one of these! I'd unbolt the exhaust and it was loud as hell. It was still slow as hell too sadly, but at least it sounded awesome. It got all kinds of funny comments. Happy motoring!

I drove one in '97,and argued with a couple buds about a Taurus with a V-8.They said they only had 6's and I was wrong.I was working at a Ford dealership,and worked on it.I counted the plugs because I was so surprised by how much power it had.Here's proof guys.
For as boring as a car this looks on the outside, it has one of the most legendary drivetrain combinations out there. I would definitely drive one around town just to get looks as you scream by in grandma's ford Taurus.
I wonder if it's possible to swap the front and rear of like an 02 Taurus to this? I'm sure it's possible in one way or another, but would it be similar to the 5th and 6th gen Monte Carlos all you had to do was basically connect the dots.

I’m not really a fan of the Taurus but when I saw that this one had a V8 that tells me that Ford should of kept the V8 then it would of been a great competitor with the Charger

The 2010 and up Taurus SHO is fords biggest sleeper and with some mods you can easily get it to 400+ HP
