You could use like a louver blind system and hoist it up with a string. Sort of like Roman shades.

B&M do tarps cheap as chips too Keith. Our local store is only a mile away, so always a good first stop. 5mx4m for a tenner. Great set-up though. I need to do more with dust control in my shed, so this could be a starter for ten
Nice! Thought about turning them in to Roman blinds? Should be pretty easy and then just pull them up with a cord, saves moving the bench/ladder about
My thought, too. Two small pulleys. Sash cord. Clip for the cord. But how to deal with an undesirable dangling cord?
How bout that pillar in the centre with the power? Could use some eyelets to run the cord through and down that
I was thinking the same thing. As soon as he added the PVC to the bottom, I thought of the blind idea.
Maybe add a extract fan in the ceiling as well to help remove dust or fumes

Looks great especially for painting, the other option with the eyelets on the tarps would be a curtain track. Screwfix do a cheap and nasty one for £10 for 4.5m. Wouldn't roll up but quicker to pull to one side.
But then I'd have the huge trailing curtains hanging down in the middle of my workspace?
Looks like a great solution! much faster rolling up with pvc conduits, and they also add some weight on them bottom when unrolled. would like to see them in action

I had a section (5m x 3.200m) in my (big) garage that I’ve just partitioned off and fitted a pair of secondhand doors to. It’s my new spraying booth area. I’ve added some LED panels for lighting and a heater to help the paint cure faster. Currently renovating the house so it’ll be handy for spraying doors etc.
This is brilliant and I'm definitely stealing this idea for a paint spray shelter in my garage. Well done!

Great idea. I'm thinking of using two battens on the ceiling, sandwiching the tarp so you get a perfect seal at the ceiling. Another thought is to slide some steel rebar into the pvc conduit.. it would give it some extra weight so it hangs better.
Great idea I could do with doing this! I’ve been making OSB veneer recently with my router sled and making a total mess. Doing this will save me hours of clean up! Thanks Keith.
Have had tarpaulin in my workshop for a year now but couldn't work out how to get it rolled up effectively now i know what to do great idea thank you.

Excellent, practical idea; easy to implement too. Thank you! Just some food for thought: maybe threading some rope through the plastic piping, can turn your screen into a "Roman Blind", and you can just pull it up, secure it to a hook, rather than climbing on your bench? Our agility does not last forever... 😉
Looks Great!! I have a smaller shop than yours and wanted to do a dust containment around the lathe. I looked at a Rockler's ceiling track system which would be perfect except that it is really expensive. The next thought was a curtain track to go around the 3 sides of the lathe table. (The 4th side is the wall) So I scoured the internet for a deal on the curtain tracks and found some at a dealer on clearance. The price was good, but then I saw a hotel was selling off the interiors of the hotel. Sure enough, they had exactly what I was looking for. The track and hooks for a 12 ft long track with two curves cost me $10.00! I already had two extra-wide clear shower curtains that were $3.00 a piece. Total price$16.00 +$5.00 worth of petrol. Like you, I try to find things I need second-hand or dirt cheap. I do have the luxury of time on my hands since I retired, that not all have though.

Great job! You finished in one time what I started to do ten(?) years ago and I never finished it. I only mounted some pieces of wood to the (concrete) ceiling.
I wanted to put it on rails, but this roll up system is maybe even better. Thanks for sharing the video. It reminded me that I should finish what I started.

Hi Keith, great solution. Agree with Nico that a pressure gradient might be helpful. Having said that, static might be your worst enemy.
Love it !!! You can do it smaller scale with the curtain rods for bathroom works fine too and can be removable for renters especially !!!!
I had a similar idea when i worked out of a carport (don't know if translates from 'Murican to the King's English - it's a wall-less garage). I used to have to take things inside to finish them, which wasn't great for fumes and such. I wanted to mount four transparent sheets to the ceiling of the carport that would roll up like yours, but they would have a half a zipper on each end that could zip the sheets together at the corners, which would keep the breeze and most bugs out. I also thought about having a cutout in one of the sheets for a box fan. Alas, we sold the house before those plans came to fruition.

This is like from some Guy Ritchie movie where they build this in your room for 1 reason only. To butcher your body into small pieces, roll it up and move to garbage hehe 😜 now I see it has other uses too. 😉

Good job! If you bought 1 more, you could cut it in 3 and stick it /staple it to the bottom of the others to close the gap . Also, you can get heavy duty velcro to tie them up quickly
I did something similar when working in my parents garage to protect their stuff. I found the fine dust still stuck to the tarpaulins but so long as they are taut, it was easy enough to vacuum off with a brush attachment.
looks great.. I think for wood dust it will be fine .. but to use it as a spray booth you will need some form of fan/extraction as the over spray will settle on the sprayed piece...

That is a great solution to a big problem.
That is unabashedly genius.
If you sort of reverse your design, with the pvc/dowel at the top, you can make drastically reduce the roll up time and effort.
Make a couple of hanging supports for the dowel on each end. One end can either be fastened through the center with a bolt and washers for free movement, or cut a slightly larger than the diameter of the dowel hole, run the dowel through it. Do this on the other end as well, but leave some extra length.
To the other end, secure a 3-4" length of hose (I recommend "heater hose" but anything flexible with the same or slightly smaller ID than your dowel) over the dowel and attach another dowel to the open end of the hose that is long enough to reach the chest height. The heater hose acts as a sort of poor man's u-joint allowing you to rotate the dowel (and roll up the tarp) from the ground.
Add a 8 in or so length of wood at this end perpendicular to the dowel and then another 4-6in length to the end of this piece to give yourself a sort of off set crank handle.
Loosely hold the long dowel in one hand for support, and crank away! you will quickly be able to raise and lower your new curtain. add a hook to the wall for bracing the handle while the curtain in retracted, or fold it back across the tarp curtain and secure to the ceiling to be completely out of the way.
You may also consider using this design for a DIY awning on your camper project! I got the idea for the flexible hose u-joint from a camper awning project, but I can't seem to find the vid.

An slightly more expensive but still fairly cheap alternative is a buget garden gazebo, worked well for us for race car fibre glassing and painting

Great idea, nice job, good video. Extractor in the ceiling might be good but perhaps a box fan with a filter on it might be a more simple to fit, flexible (and cheaper?) alternative.
😁 Nice job Keith. I tried this a few years ago as a spray booth but I used some very lightweight sheeting... it was great until I opened my workshop door and the sheets got caught by a slight breeze.... and stuck to my fresh paint 😖. Your setup is much better. Thanks for the video Keith 😁👍

Good idea, Keith. This is a creative method and an inexpensive on. Kinda the Daily Double as far as I am concerned.
For flattening wood slabs I prefer to use my sled on the drive way as it is far easier to clean up afterwards but your idea is good for an occasional paint booth.

I have considered this because I would like to get a sprayer. I like how you added the pipes at the bottom. I feel like there should be some sort of vacuum mechanism to help filter particles in the air though. Maybe I am over thinking it, but contained doesn't lower the amount of particles and dust collection units can be pricy. I don't think it would be good to do any sanding shortly after spraying either as the particles would adhere to the tarps, but the likely hood of the happening seems low. 🤔

I like the idea. I have a garage shop and work with the doors open most times. Spraying fine finishes is something I have had many issues with. Doing outside, always ends up with bugs in the paint. Doing it inside there’s always a chance of getting over spray on things however I do use a HVLP turbine set up. I think this might be the solution but I have to ask. Why didn’t you go all the way to the floor? In my case it wouldn’t work like that, bugs get in my garage too.

I'd probably have gone for a bit of string with a loop at the end tacked to the wooden battens (on the non-hook side of the battens) that the tarpaulins are attached to in line with the hooks that the tarpaulins are on - then you could just hook the string over (to the tarpaulin hooks) when you roll up the tarpaulins - this avoids the need for spring clamps. Air circulation is going to be a problem as the other comments have made clear - avoiding moving air will be good for reducing the problems of dust settling on something just sprayed but will reduce the amount of time that you can spend in the 'booth' with the build up of fumes - all things weighed up, it's still a good solution.

Did some slab flattening in my shop with a home made router jig. My only question is....How did you clean up in an hour? Is that some kind of Metric time? I used my dust extractor as a giant shop vac, and then an actual shop vac, and a broom and dust pan, and then a leaf blower. Then I had to wash my car. I going to buy some tarps.

Try using a 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" Long Dowel connect it to the bottom of your tarp to roll it up easier.

For those that are thinking about the shower curtain route ua-cam.com/video/nUpIUwNVh70/v-deo.html and two additions if you don't want the messy bundle of fabric would be a simple MDF enclosure floor to ceiling (a sort of vertical pelmet) perhaps adding a length of dowel on the end of the fabric to use as a handle to help manoeuvre it. The downside would be it would take up a small amount of floor/wall space and would probably cost a bit more. Thanks again for the video, great to see different ideas.
Doesn't the fact that it doesn't reach the floor kind of negate the purpose of it? Most paint would fall to the floor any still get around. I guess it'd block most stuff getting on other equipment but the floor and surrounding objects would still be getting coated.
My wife calls mine the "murder curtains" when I put mine up :)
