  • Take a trip to the top of the world, 800 miles south of the North Pole, where a brewery is making great IPAs, lagers and barrel aged beers stored in a mine. While researching his next book Jonny gets to grips with beer culture in a Svalbard mining town so remote and northern that it experiences 3 months of darkness, 3 months of the midnight sun and average winter temperatures of around -25C.

Thank you for bringing us an important story…, wonderfully tough humans who have to embody the best characteristics of our nature to survive. It’s not surprising that a major part of their culture centers around the enjoyment of good beer. The best craft brewers reflect and incorporate local culture and values into their beer as is obviously done in Svalbard.

Excellent episode, mates! It really speaks to the indomitable nature of the human spirit not just to exist in a place like Svalbard but to thrive there. And, yes, craft beer and brewing is concrete example of that spirit as well as the brewer's persistence to bring it there. Thanks for the very profound look at how beer is an essential part of the human experience.

I live in Norway, which is undeniably bleak for 5-6 months of the year, even in the south, but that is truly bleaker. Truly, truly bleaker. Can you imagine living there? Waiting for the next shipment of malted barley and hops? The next shipment of pretty much everything, except polar bears? WTF! 😱 Unless you need to be there for some reason, seasonal work, research, etc., don't go there is the best advice. Misfits running away from life mostly. One of the highest turnover rates in Norway, which itself has among Europe's highest attrition rates for settled foreigners. Do the maths.
