The M5 has always been --- from an engineering stand-point --- a very technological, very powerful 4 door sedan. The current model is likely no exception.
And I've THOUGHT, for years/decades, from a purely AESTHETICALLY stand-point, that the BMW M5 always has been one of the most exquisitely put together, big, square/boxy 4 door super sedan. All models throughout the years, decades, have their nooks & crannies, odds & ends, goods, bads, and uglies, of course. No car design ever is "perfect"...
But the current M5 is the only model whose REAR END DESIGN reminds me --- upon first & last visual inspections --- of the -ungainly, ugly, slanting, Hyena-like posture of a $15,000 Nissan Sentra of the 1990s.
      Horrible tail end design.
After decades of marvelling at the M5, thinking it's the most beautiful 4 door super saloon... I've now moved on to thinking the Porsche Panamera, the Audi E-Tron GT, for example, are just leaps above the M5.
Again, from a purely aesthetic stand-point.
I am sure engineering wise, & technologically, BMW --- and the mighty M5 --- will remain a true technological power house for years to come, yet.
P.S. For reference, & on staying evolutionary with body design (not radical BS like what Lexus been doing the last 8 years alone), I think the larger BMW 7 (including the "M" model) still retain BMW's big, boxy, beautiful design. It is so different from any other major high-end design (Lexus, Mercedes Benz S, Panamera, etc), you know immediately it (the 7 series/7M) is a reliable, historically significant BMW design branding...

This new M5 model is only fractionally smaller, around 2.5" shorter than the last swb 7 series. Too big! Basically the new 7 is massive, the new 5 has grown and this is what the M engineers were given, no choice in the matter really 0:04 0:04 0:04

9:12 "I don't know what the interior designers were thinking"
There are no more interior designers anywhere to be found for modern German cars. Even before you opened the door, I knew it would be the same interior we've seen for the last couple of years: a thrown iPad in lieu of a proper dashboard, capacitive buttons, and scratch-prone and reflective piano black. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn't buy it. This is for people who buy BMWs as a status symbol. The illuminated grille is tasteless.
Also from your conclusion: the M5 is not for M fans. Nice.

Former M5 LCI F90 owner, and test drove the G90 the other day, and came in with low expectations, but I was blown away by the G90 in every aspect.
Felt incredibly more responsive with the electric assist and just as fast if not faster. The interior was leagues better than the F90, and obviously much more modern. Also, the car looked MUCH better in person than all the reviews and videos I’ve seen beforehand.
And yes, you can feel the extra mass to a degree, but it was incredible how the suspension allowed a car that heavy to feel as nimble and acrobatic as it did.
Losing the soft close doors, massaging seats, and extended leather sucks. But the car still felt great overall and just about better than the F90 in almost every way.
I think anyone who sees it in person and has the opportunity to take it for an extended drive, will come away pretty impressed.

The car is compromised by design and I can’t live with that at this price point. The build quality and materials is still not even close to pre 2021 level of BMW build quality. Getting beyond that, the space in the rear and trunk is way too small for the size of the vehicle. It’s just a bad design even if you wanted it as a daily driver. This car won’t age well and will depreciate like a rock.

Thomas @Autogefühl the best 👌 in 4K, full screen, full length, let's go! One question Thomas: as a native German, can you tell us which is the most preferred brand by Germans in Germany in 2024 between BMW, Mercedes and Audi?

In 2024, among Germany's premium automotive brands, Mercedes-Benz led in new car registrations, followed by BMW and Audi. According to data from the first half of the year, Mercedes-Benz registered approximately 126,847 vehicles, BMW 114,690, and Audi 104,164.
However, it's noteworthy that Mercedes-Benz experienced a decline in registrations compared to the previous year, with a decrease of 12.7%, while BMW saw a modest increase of 2.7%. Audi faced a more significant decline, with registrations dropping by 17.1%.
These figures indicate that while Mercedes-Benz maintained its leading position in the premium segment, both Mercedes-Benz and Audi encountered challenges in 2024, reflected in their decreased registration numbers.

I low key hate the two tone interior, but apart from that, this feels like the M5 has kinda perfected what it was intended to be - not a track weapon, but a highway / autobahn missile that keeps you in relative isolation and very comfortable, but not mega luxury. Are the benefits worth it? Can it take all-seasons for some or part of the year? Is it too loud after you adjust it to be quieter? Was the front seat set for your height (6'2"?) Hello Thomas, good review of a very special car. Hate it or not, it is still a piece of great engineering. I found your personal opinion about hybrid technology interesting. Maybe something as a general topic to discuss. There are a lot of opinions, but from a technical view however still few facts. For example, there is something to be said that dual technology makes the car more susceptible to failure. On the other hand, if you use the electric component relatively often, say for commuting, you can greatly relieve the gasoline engine which makes for a longer life. Both arguments are for the sake of logic valid. Opinions are nice but facts are even better. Statistics on this I can't really find and I myself am hesitating between a gasoline and hybrid car.

Viewed online I would agree but I’ve learnt a few things about bmw over the years. 1) their cars rarely seem good looking on release but seem to magically get better with time. Quite a strange phenomenon but very true. 2) most modern designs you need to see in person. I saw one of these M5 in the show room and it actually looked good. Very muscular and chiselled. I shocked myself. So in summary, get down to a dealer to see one then judge. Even the interior look far better and premium in person.

Are BMW animal grown especially for the skin? I bet most are just offering leather as a by-product to crucial healthy sustenance supply. If we all stopped using leather overnight, we'd be piling it on waste dumps or trying to burn it cleanly. Quite a lot of it. Commanding extra resources for non-animal skin alternative may actually be a lot less "green", depending on one's chosen definition to suit the specific narrative that suits them for the issue at hand.
I'm not a fan of leather unless I can get good seat ventilation. Sweaty back. I'd want back ventilation in my t-shirts, dress suits, winter jackets, everything :) Imagine we could add in some body deodorant to our sent vents, just a quick extra cool application :)

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  2 місяці тому +8

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ua-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/v-deo.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ua-cam.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/v-deo.html
And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ua-cam.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/v-deo.html
New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ua-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/v-deo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: ua-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/v-deo.html
Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ua-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/v-deo.html
For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ua-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/v-deo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest:
      www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html
In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars.
We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary:
      ua-cam.com/video/-8gNXlRGngA/v-deo.html
The argument that leather is merely a "waste" product of the food industry and therefore ethical or sustainable has been a topic of debate, and there are several reasons why it is considered problematic and unethical:
      1. Leather is a Profitable Co-Product, not a Byproduct.
      * Leather is not a waste material. It is a valuable co-product of the meat and dairy industries, meaning that the skins and hides of animals are sold for profit. The global leather industry is worth billions of dollars, and the demand for high-quality leather, particularly for luxury goods, is significant.
      * Economic Contribution: By buying leather, consumers are directly contributing to the profitability of the meat and dairy industries, reinforcing demand for animal farming. Leather adds financial value to the slaughter of animals, which in turn incentivizes the continuation of intensive animal agriculture.
      2. Encourages the Environmental Impact of Animal Farming
      * Environmental Harm: Animal farming is a leading cause of environmental degradation. It contributes to deforestation, water pollution, and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The leather industry, as part of this system, intensifies the environmental impact.
      * Tanning Process: Leather production itself is extremely resource-intensive and involves harmful chemicals like chromium, which can pollute water sources and harm ecosystems and communities living near tanneries. The argument that leather is a "waste" deflects from these significant environmental costs.
      3. Supports Cruel Animal Farming Practices
      * Factory Farming: Most leather comes from animals raised in factory farms where they endure inhumane conditions-such as overcrowding, mutilation (dehorning, tail docking), and often brutal slaughter practices.
      * Leather Sources Beyond Cattle: It’s important to note that leather is not only sourced from cows. Other animals such as pigs, sheep, goats, and even exotic animals like crocodiles and snakes are often killed specifically for their skins. In some cases, animals are bred solely for leather production, especially in the case of exotic leathers.
      4. Leather’s Role in the Global Meat and Dairy Supply Chain
      * The "Chicken and Egg" Relationship: The leather industry is deeply intertwined with the meat and dairy supply chains. It is misleading to claim that leather is merely a waste product when in reality it adds value to the entire system. The more leather that is purchased, the more profitable it becomes for the animal agriculture industry to keep raising and slaughtering animals.
      * Ethical Disconnect: From an ethical standpoint, using leather under the assumption that it’s “just waste” ignores the larger systemic issues of animal exploitation. It perpetuates a cycle where animals are bred, confined, and slaughtered in massive numbers, not just for meat but also for profit from their hides.
      5. There Are Viable, Sustainable Alternatives
      * Innovation in Vegan Leathers: Today, there are numerous cruelty-free, sustainable alternatives to animal leather, such as pineapple leather (Piñatex), mushroom leather, apple leather, and even lab-grown leather. These options do not involve the same ethical, environmental, or health concerns as traditional leather production.
      * Sustainability Argument: Many leather alternatives are far more environmentally friendly. For instance, plant-based and recycled materials often require fewer resources and generate less pollution compared to the production of leather from animal hides, which requires heavy water and energy consumption and the use of toxic chemicals in tanning.
      6. Moral and Ethical Considerations
      * Devaluing Animal Lives: By framing leather as a “waste” product, it downplays the intrinsic value of animal lives and reduces sentient beings to mere commodities. This perspective is often criticized for failing to acknowledge the rights of animals to live free from exploitation and harm.
      * Speciesism: The belief that animals can be farmed for their skins because their lives are less important than human needs or luxury goods can be seen as a form of speciesism-the assumption that human interests always take precedence over the welfare of other species, even when non-leather alternatives are available.
      7. Global Impact on Communities
      * Health Risks to Workers: Many leather tanneries, especially in developing countries, expose workers to unsafe chemicals like chromium salts. These chemicals can cause severe health issues, including cancer, respiratory problems, and skin conditions. Communities near tanneries often suffer from polluted water and land.
      * Environmental Justice: Often, the communities that are most affected by the environmental harm of the leather industry are poor and marginalized. These populations bear the brunt of the environmental degradation, even though the demand for leather comes largely from wealthier consumers in more developed countries.
The idea that leather is a "waste" product from the food industry is misleading and unethical because it ignores the significant role that leather plays in the profitability of animal farming, the environmental degradation it causes, the cruelty inherent in the industry, and the availability of sustainable alternatives. To label leather as mere "waste" downplays its substantial impact on both animals and the environment, making this argument a way to justify the continued use of an ethically and environmentally problematic material.

@ They may be have better functionality but they look cheap and stuck on - a bit of an after thought. I’ve had both, too and currently have a new 840i Gran Coupe and can honestly say I prefer the look of the dashboard in this car. It feels way more sophisticated.

Thomas is mistaken, that is a static light show, for mood and character, they don’t work once the car starts moving. BMW don’t fit turning indicators.

so if we talk about the M5 yes it's too heavy, the hybrid totally distorts the car... (but hey it's not BMW's fault it's the case for the future AMG RS.... and this is European legislation)
now for the design (apart from the red seats) I find the new series 5 really great!!! it's no longer a 5 series I think we're more on a sporty 7 series 🤷🏻‍♂️ but it's great the seats seem ultra comfortable... if you want to swallow miles on the highway I think that This is the ideal car!!!

by the way, the pure electric new 5er is better because of the much lower center of gravity. (due to placement of the battery)
