What BMW needs to do with every single M car is provide a “pure” option. No battery assist. No auto. A TCS on or off button. Analog gauges. RWD. Doesn’t even need to make 700~ HP. Charge less, sell more. Winner.
Look, even Porsche recognizes this is what people who really like cars truly want, so they do make them; and it's called the GT3. You can't realistically buy a GT3 because they produce them in numbers so small you can't even be allocated, and even if you do you will charge huge, huuuge premiums depending on your country. They know the outcry and demands for a full-fledged purist variant. So they'll make you only pay outrageous numbers to obtain one. German sports car companines are only worth when boycotted nowdays.
Aim your ire at the administrative states shoving needless mandates down the manufacturers throats to force wealth transfers under the pretense of environmentalism.
The engine sound is louder inside than outside. Actually very polite to the environment. Appreciate that. I wonder when we will see the first tutorial videos on recommended settings. I love messing around with setup options, but some advice is also welcome.

An M5 will be heavier than 1205kg, but there's no way it needed to be more than double the weight. £110k, 700hp+ and 2.4 tonnes: The M5, or a 308 GTi towing a Lotus Exige...I know which I'd take 🤣
I love Tom's reviews! They're a pleasure to watch-he not only gives the new technology a chance but also draws fascinating parallels with older-generation cars. Well done, Tom!
I'm still left scratching my head wondering who greenlighted this 5 series design. Or didn't BMW do a design study with previous gen customers? And settings, settings, and more settings....why?
I heard that it was going to be electric but somebody convinced them to do a V8 late in the process. I think that makes sense because its so insanely heavy and it looks like an ev.
I sat in the very first new model BMW M5 Competition (looks identical to this car), 5 minutes after if arrived from Production to the BMW Welt in Munich! The BMW Concierge I was working with went directly to the Engineering staff who had just delivered the car and obtained the keys and allowed me to sit in and start this vehicle. I was the only non-BMW employee allowed to enter that car. The interior was Fascinating and opulent. Also, @ 6'8" (203 cm), I was able to sit in this car! Yes, I have the pictures and video to prove it. :-)
The weight isn't even it. They're exposing themselves for delivering a lame and badly tuned hybrid system. If that hybrid were potent and well setup, there is no reason that this car accelerates much slower than a high power electric sedan (low 2 seconds is the norm in this price range). It's a half arsed effort. Something we see also in German full EVs, they're barely trying. Porsche is the least bad, and we know even they are pulling their punches with Taycan and Macan.
To be fair BMW always underrates their figures. They said that previous gen M5 did 0-60 in 3.4 but it's been proven to be even faster. There should no surprise that this will do it faster than 3.5
So BMW made a function that highlights the turbo lag and transmission being slow, that you need to engage to make your 700hp car pass regular traffic better?
Don't think so. F90 will never be able to compete in terms of efficiency as a daily due to lack of hybrid motor, not to mention it's technologically behind. 2 different cars.
@@nikitamarynich1794 I don’t think being less technologically complicated means that it’s technologically behind. Not one person choosing an M5 is choosing it for efficiency either… this seems more like a fully optioned m550i than a Motorsport derived super saloon.
@@nikitamarynich1794 Tech won't mean anything when it comes time to evaluate the cars in the future (and it could be easily argued that buyers are getting tech fatigue in cars anyway; look at how positively people reacted to the Tourbillion's gauge cluster for example). Also if you want efficiency then just buy a 530d or hybrid or whatever they're called, no-ones looking at an M5 for efficiency.
The problem is that these cars are now “all things to all people”. It needs to be sporty but comfy. It needs to be a tech fest for your passengers. It needs to impress them EU emissions people. What you get in the end is this. In a decade (F10 to G90), an M5 has increased its mass by about 50%.
I've never been more disappointed with a new car. They took one of the most perfect looking saloon cars and turned it into a heavy Kia for absolutely no reason
There’s a reason why the new M5 still has a 4.4L V8, with new car regulations all manufactures are expected to turn their cars into hybrids and for bmw to do that without giving a smaller engine like Merc they had to make the car heavier to fit in the electric system. So why complain if that doesn’t reflect on the cars performance and we still receive the V8 we all love ?
They had to resurface the road after this test. You know those twin grooves slowly edged into the highway that you often see in the truck lane? Yes.. that...
The spirit of BMW as a whole has collapsed fallen off the cliffs and is digging under the earth with every new release they have done. They have ruined the name, the authenticity, the german peak performance and the rawness a car should offer. They are proudly moving in the wrong direction ! RIP BMW in hopes that it gets revived one day!
Interesting you say BMW is moving in the wrong direction or fallen off a cliff yet they're selling more and more vehicles each year, gaining new customers and expanding their product line. New M5 doesn’t make me jump and say I want one, but I will give it one thing, there is now clear distinction between the purposes of an M5 and M3. The new M5 is the Autobahn express for the German business exec, who just so happens to love cars and could go for a nice Sunday drive if he wanted. The M3 is the family sports car, smaller, cheaper, lighter, more enjoyable on a track than the new M5 will likely ever be. Because previously an M5 was just a bigger M3 and most would just say take the M3. I think BMW is trying to segment their customers better this time and I think they will succeed at that. Long time M5 fans will be disappointed, but the M3 is still there to provide some fun.
They are both too fat and too numb. Chasing acceleration numbers. Back in the day, the M3 was a real sports car. A cheaper option to a 911 even. Now it’s not even really a sports sedan. YESS!!
Just posting an unpopular view: I love it.
The fact that that BMW will still provide a V8 and the battery range / boost when others are downsizing shouldn’t be forgotten.
Only a mother could love that
Finally a good review. A review where you are willing to talk smack about a car and be honest. That is proper journalism! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Proper journalism? LOL You do know that negative reviews that go against the norm gain more media exposure because it generates more clicks/interests in social media channels. Unless you've been living under a rock all this time or just dropped in from the planet Mars 😂😂
It will never look as good as the E39 M5
privieldged to have owned one
@tindets how did you find it? Dynamically speaking.
Been close a couple times now and decided against it
Truth.
It looks like a newer F60, I don't see an issue.
Never ever
Great review, on point and honest. Definitely lost its spirit, someone at BMW is cooking but it ain't alright
What BMW needs to do with every single M car is provide a “pure” option. No battery assist. No auto. A TCS on or off button. Analog gauges. RWD. Doesn’t even need to make 700~ HP. Charge less, sell more. Winner.
They won't.
They would do it, they are not stupid - but they cannot due to environmental compliance
The environment don't give a crap about noise, thunder everywhere.
Push throttle, speed goes up, fun achieved, yay!
Alternatively, I'll take something half the weight, with half the power. I'm sure they've done very clever things with the dynamics, but no "sporty" car should be heavier than a Giulia QV towing a Cessna...yes really.
get the All wheel drive 2024 gr yaris with either 6 speed or the new 8 speed auto it makes about 276hp and weight exactly half of this m5 and its 2+2 hacth.
@@patthonsirilim5739 Can never go wrong with a GR Yaris!
I got a 308 GTi instead. 1205kg, 270hp (before the decat 😄), completely insane 380mm brakes, an LSD and a chassis that loves going sideways - I've had the tail out more in 1 year of that than I did in 9 years of exclusive RWD ownership 😁
The 308 also isn't much less practical than an M5 (bigger boot, less rear leg room) and has stuff like massage seats while being 5* NCAP (at release). An M5 will be heavier than 1205kg, but there's no way it needed to be more than double the weight.
£110k, 700hp+ and 2.4 tonnes: The M5, or a 308 GTi towing a Lotus Exige...I know which I'd take 🤣
12:28 to show the E28 in this video is so cruel. What an utter regression by BMW. The F10 M5 is the last good M5, it has to be said.
F10 m5 was shit. So un reliable and could never even put its power down. F90 was better in everyway
F90 mate
BMW's fall off has to be studied
😅😅😅
What kind of fall?
Company sales numbers are skyrocketing.
The most profitable auto manufacturer in the world with $27.6 billion net profit.
I love Tom's reviews! They're a pleasure to watch-he not only gives the new technology a chance but also draws fascinating parallels with older-generation cars. Well done, Tom!
Not even titanic can carry this😮😮😂
It wasn’t an iceberg that sank it 😉
0:45 "Subtle Looks" proceeds to walk past bright yellow car Haha
The last gen m5 did 0-60 in 2.9-3.1 depending on spec. "3 and a half seconds" is a fair bit worse.
No surprise given all that weight added.
New one is faster, joe achilles has a video testing it
To be fair BMW always underrates their figures. They said that previous gen M5 did 0-60 in 3.4 but it's been proven to be even faster. There should no surprise that this will do it faster than 3.5
@@CloxxkiWho are you implying is doing a good job? Lucid? Even pulling their punches, the Taycan is one of the best if not the best EV sedan on sale.
Depending on spec? Those are CS and this is a stock BMW that hasn't been tested properly nor tuned. This will be a 2.5 sec car down the line.
you nailed it, very well put
Whoa, I totally felt that earthquake last month. Now I know it was related to that gargantuan behemoth doing launch control things.
BMW have finally found something too heavy for it ever to be an acceptable reference in a "yo momma" joke. Nobody's mother is this fat.
So BMW made a function that highlights the turbo lag and transmission being slow, that you need to engage to make your 700hp car pass regular traffic better?
Is that a tank?
😢😂
A German tank!
Gotta appreciate how 4RA handles recalculations, always fair and quick
That’s no moon… it’s a BMW!
Used to have an E39 M5 gen2 in the 90's... how i miss it 😢
Respect ❤
The '22 M5cs will be worth all the $$ one day... it was exactly what, in my mind, people want from an M5 (coming from an E34 M5 owner).
@@nikitamarynich1794nobody buying a V8 thinks about efficiency
I want to dislike it but i don’t, seems like an incredible car!! love the color too. Would be a great daily and autobahn stormer
The problem is that these cars are now “all things to all people”. It needs to be sporty but comfy. It needs to be a tech fest for your passengers. It needs to impress them EU emissions people. What you get in the end is this. In a decade (F10 to G90), an M5 has increased its mass by about 50%.
I'm keeping my '20 Competition, hopefully can find a '23 Competition to upgrade to in a year. I just don't understand the weight gain.
My phone fell when I clicked on the video because of how heavy the car is

Same 100000%. The brand bores me. Sorry and I love bmws (e39 owner)
It has its own gravitational pull. Quite the selling point.
And we’re back to nine planets
The way 4RA displays stats and info, makes deciding bets so much easier!
Very valid point.

can we get an M5 lite with less weight and just the essentials?
Yes, for $225,000 they will remove the rear seats, add a roll bar, and call it a Competition... And it will only save 100kg. 😂
The spirit of the M5 has sadly vanished.
You don't become the number 1 premium car manufacturer on the planet by 'falling off a cliff' in your business model 😂😂
@@blackpanda7612 right and I have not mentioned them being a bad-selling company. I am talking about their designs and the people who buy these cars over a Mercedes or Audi are dumb. They have created a completely new type of genre in vehicles. Heavy cars, with subscription features, ugly designs increased complex tech, lack of reliability and maintenance issues, making grilles bigger and bigger every year, and much more. I suppose this sounds like a perfect recipe for a car company to you. But I tell you what, its not quite right. Their German competitors have taken good advantage of this. But one thing is for sure, I am surprised how BMW can confidently sell cars like this and make success out of the sales. Its basically a scam on what they are doing. Or it could be a group of people with a spoiled taste in cars.
Gotta love how 4ra manages to keep every bet feeling fresh and fair, they know how to run a game.

Why does BMW insist on making large, ugly cars? With the exception of the F Series, this brand lost their identify after the E46 platform.
The M8 was their last beautiful car before going downhill
Love how 4ra keeps adding new features, always something exciting to check out.
I'm guessing this m5 was developed during the electrification period just like the c63. It was a weird moment for automaker
But now that they see there's a push back, the next gen M cars will be the one to look for as it'll be "purer" and more ///M ethos focused
The next gen will be in 7 years so who knows what the market/trend will be then. I highly doubt it will be purer in any way.
If this is BMWs way of making us unable to wait to see the next generation, then they have done a GREAT job
Just a cheaper option to an M5. The closest thing to a real M3 now is a Supra. Hell, Cadillacs are more like older Bimmers than BMWs are now.
