🦒🐕🙌🙋♀Hi Nina, how are you today? I hope energy is back !!! King hahaha, so cute!!! Hello to Stan the man from his brother!!! He is envious of that beautiful moss and the maiden fern 😄Cold damage, oh no!!! I went straight to mine but I don't see the same. However the leaves are yellow at the tips which may be a consequence of the cold as well considering it does not get any direct sun and we do not lack the humidity. Good luck amiga mia, hope you have a better day, today 😘😘🤗🤗
FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! I would rather not go into detail of how I am today. I think you have a pretty good idea 🥹😘 no offence, but I need to watch my heart rate. Cold damage, yes! Well, now that it has rained for the past 48hrs, and we have another 48 hrs to go, I have a couple of degrees more. If he makes it, great, if not.... that would be another orchid that I managed to grow to size and then could not manage to accomodate it anymore, because of the size. Sigh! Oh well... I can speak on the experience. I shall finish my YT duties and go back to bed. 👍🏼 really appreciate you watching, thank you so very much! Also, thank you for being so supportive ❤️ have yourself a cozy evening, amiga mia ❤️🌸
Thank you Nina! Excellent information on caring for Stanhopeas. Stan the Man is a gorgeous beast! I appreciate the Stanhopeas so much from afar 😍🥰 but indoor growing and the space they require makes it too formidable for me to contend with. I have seen photos from one crafty, creative fellow that suspended a drip tray beneath the basket giving room for bottom buds and growth. Have a fantastic day Nina! 🙏💖🤗😊🌈
Robi, hi 😍💐 I hope that after the winter ordeal, I will still have him as the beast that he is now. It is possible that the cold damaged leaves, will drop off faster than they should, and then I am left with a basket of bulbs, looking rather bare and horrible. 😔 I will have been schooled by another orchid that I bought, grew to size and then would have to loose because the size made it untenable to take care of properly. Seems to be the story of my life. Anyhooo.... yep, size matters 👍🏼 I could do the suspended tray idea, but, the orchid is too heavy for the steel rod that I have indoors for the hanging baskets. If it weren't just the span of the orchid, the weight is something else! The hanging chains tell a story 😬 it was a nice stint with my stan, I hope that I will continue to have it after this persistent cold weather. Really appreciate you watching, Robi! Thank you so much 🙏🏼 hope you are doing well and having a lovely week 😘🌸
HI Nichet 😍💐 thank you so much for your feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to watch. It took a while, but I am glad that it was helpful 🙌🏼 really appreciate your patience, Nichet! Thank you so so much for your support here ❤️🌸
I got a Stanhopea Florida for Valentine’s Day & your information is very helpful. I have many aroids, but this is my first orchid. Thanks so much for such detailed care guide.
Carol, hi 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it! A STAN for Valentine's Day!! 😍🥳 that is amazing! Oh, you are going to love growing that orchid 👍🏼 and, it is very very unusual to get a Stanhopea as a first orchid, but what a fantastic way to start! I am so glad that you found this video useful, and I hope that you enjoy seeing how your Stan grows and then blooms 👍🏼 of course I had to google the one you have and I see similarities in the blooms. White with burgundy spots, whereas the blooms on your's look more elegant 😍 really appreciate you watching, thank you so much and once again, WELCOME! 🥰🌸
I guess Stan is never coming out of that basket and will, instead, just eat it. He sure is mossy and that looks like the exact same moss that is on victoria-reginae, so that must be the magic orchid growing moss. With the cold damage, so long as the bulbs aren't damaged, that is what is important. I would expect it will drop every leaf that has suffered cold damage, happened with my Grammatophyllums and Neomoorea (which is very Stan like) this year. I have new growths already on the Gramms (two months earlier than normal but everything seems to be ahead of schedule this year, the anosmum are already showing new growth even though the buds are just starting). Nothing yet on the Neomoorea but the bulbs are still green and firm so I'm sure they will come.
Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! If I have to toss Stan, then the basket is going with him, so, you are right... he is never going to come out of that basket. I may end up with only bulbs in the basket, after which I can bring the orchid inside for the winter of 23/24, but... its going to be a constant issue seeing as the basket itself is now super heavy as well. I do not like growing ugly orchids 😔 not a good time to be talking about that either though, I am at the end of my rope! mentally... I am done! When I venture outside again after 5 days of not going outside, I will have a good look around as to what has happened. The orchids indoors are probably going to need something tomorrow, and that is going to be a whole act as well. First.... I am off to bed, because, this is pointless. I am so done! 🥲 really appreciate you watching, though, Michael, thank you so much for being here 🙏🏼❤️🌸
Another beautiful and interesting orchid!! 👍🏻 One Orchid I have never tried to grow. I hope your power issues are much better and you don't have to keep your canoe 🛶 at the ready! Been busy helping the kids with the new house, and Drs. Labs, etc.... Catch you next time Nina. 🦇
🦇😍💐 good afternoon from another depressing cold and overcast wet day in Southern Spain 🥹 I am FINE! In Spades!! 💆🏼♀️💆🏼♀️ the power issues are intermittently sorted out... for the house! My power issues are broken. I keep checking the time to see if it is already reasonable to go back to bed. I even took Xyliano out this morning in case I put a check mark on this day as well. Supposedly Sat / Sun it will be warm enough to take the orchids outside and water them. I am having issues indoors and outdoors. Maybe its time to 'call it' and stop the nonsense. My heart is broken! 😔 really appreciate your support, Robert, Wingman, FRIEND!! Thank you so much! Get yourself a lollipop and hopefully, this time, a balloon 😘❤️🌸
Touch me not ,every orchid in bloom says so I think.I think of a friend whose only dendrobium before flowering tied an artificial pink ditto dendrobium plastic flowers into the plant, visited daily and finally the dendrobium bloomed and she was gung ho,went near it everyday and out of joy one day'touched' and touched and embraced the flower and it came off...Diasppointed.There was plenty of ornamental palms in her garden and we mounted some dancing girls into some palms and some dendrobium canes also into another tree on our next visit.Don"t know anything about Stanhopea Nina.Muchas gracias .
Jose, hi 🥰💐 hola amigo!! Desde un sur de España muy frío y húmedo, os mando un cordial saludo. Puede que no me sienta cálido, pero puedo hacer todo lo posible para enviar los saludos cálidos. 🥰 while it is true to stay away from touching orchid blooms, in general, blooms do not mind being touched, but some spikes, in the case of Stanhopeas... they don't like it at all! Once the spike has grown a certain length, then touching it is not a big deal. Just fresh, as a spear... its over! Very surprised to hear that your friend had the bloom drop after being touched. Dendrobiums usually 'don't care', but it is sure interesting and thank you for putting the reminder in the comments. I like the idea that your friend put a plastic bloom into the plant and that it encouraged the orchid to bloom 🤩that is awesome!! One day, if you find a stanhopea ... I am sure your garden will be blessed with it's presence! 🤗👍🏼 meanwhile, mine is being drowned out at the moment. So much rain, which is good for the land and the reservoirs, but wow. Really appreciate you watching, amigo mio! I am so thankful for your support ❤️🌸
Your affection for Stan is what made me take the plunge and add a Stanhopea to my collection, and while I haven’t gotten to experience blooms yet, I absolutely love this orchid! They are just awesome! Very unique 😊 thank you for your videos, they inspire me in my own collection 😁🌺🫶🏾🪴
HI Troy 😍💐 well, you know what comes next right? You HAVE to tell me when your Stan blooms. Stan the Man here, has just pushed out 3 more growths, totalling 19 and one fail, which would have made it 20. Silly growth went up into the basket and just like the spikes, when I tried to help it out and redirect it downwards, it aborted. I did not even break the silly thing 🙄 I say silly thing because it was growing on the underside of the basket, so why it chose to grow upward beats me. But, 19 actively growing is not too shabby 🫣😅 yup, I am telling you, if I had more space, I would have more Stanhopeas. FUN!! Thank you so much for watching and for being so supportive of the channel. Especially while I am only uploading shorts because of physical interferences 😤😤 hope you have yourself a fabulous day 🫶🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids I’m more than happy to always support! I feel apart of this family now 🤗 and I’m sending all the positive vibes, blessings and energy you need to get back to strength soon! Until then I will keep making my way through all of your previous videos and your shorts!! Hi 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and a massive thank you for being here, for watching and for your kind feedback on this video! Greatly appreciated the time 🫶🏼 if you are interested in another Stan video I did this year, in which I focus on the behavior of the spikes and their quirks (how to not ruin a potential blooming) here is the link to the video 'Stanhopea Spikes Specifics'. I don't want to push my luck by linking this video, however, it fits well as an add on. ua-cam.com/video/WTnNvMKjddY/v-deo.html I hope you are having a great week and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸
How was your New Year's ? I have a Stanhopea and a Coryanthes Imaginations now that maybe trying to spike. I want to get more of these for the spring. I discovered that at home that I can really maintain orchid bundle plugs well in netted pots. I am getting excited for the spring here in NJ😊
I had a 5 hr live stream on NYE. Had a few guests on, watched the fireworks from the major cities in the world... it was awesome 😆 yes... indoors, these orchids will love their life! You saw the cold damage mine now has. That is a first, but I am also struggling with cold damage to my mind, so... I am looking forward to spring as well, FOR SURE! I hope that I still have some orchids to show when that time comes 😬🤞🏼❤️
🌸🥷🏼 Trish San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 heeeeeyy Orchideen Schwester! Definitely an option for the first 3 years, and then be aware that it will need not only a place of it's own, but the weight increases as well. The chains that this basket is secured with, they are not there because they do not rust on me 😂 even if my steel rod were located where I could hang this basket, it would not hold the weight, and I have a stainless steel rod of substance. It would pull out of the connecting joints in the wall. So... just something to keep in mind. Space and weight 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you so much for watching 🌸🥷🏼 wishing you a cozy evening when you get there ❤️🌸
Thought they are warm growing plants? I got a chance to adopt 5 or 6 species last summer (I don’t think you know that)… They are all specimen and have to be divided. One of them now has two spikes though!
HI Yoshi 🥰💐 they are, sort of! Cloud forests can be warm, but the humidity really cools the orchids down. Several degrees lower in the fog, so that are not as warm as many people think. But, persistent cold, like what mine has to cope with now, is a big no no, as is clear in the images at the end of the video. If the days do not offer anything to warm them up at least a little, then they will probably go downhill very fast. Mine has to hold on... if not, I can speak on Stanhopea based on my experiences of the past 😬 hope it manages to hold on. It is going to look really rough. I shall get cold growers in future 😡 jk!! Thank you for watching, Yoshi!! ❤️🌸
I love him, and one day get him. I first have to perfect the greenhouse. Nina do you have Iwangara Appleblossom. I got a bag baby a week ago and I want to get it right. It spent a week on my table now I am ready to move it in with the rest of my orchids. But I want to know if there is anything that it likes that might be different from other orchids?
HI Sandie 🥰💐 I do not have an Iwanagara Appleblossom, but I have an orchid that has the Appleblossom as a parent. Congratulations on your bag baby 😍🥳 what a wonderful find! The one thing I have noticed about Appleblossom and anything that has the parents in a hybrid, is, they love their calcium. Seeing as you have a bag baby, I am assuming that you have a new growth starting or already somewhat developed.... give it a good dose of calcium, more than you would give your other orchids. They love that! 👍🏼 really appreciate you watching, thank you so much! I hope that your day is already beautiful, lovely lady ❤️🌸
HI Sylvia 😍💐 you can definitely use coco fibre to line the basket yes, but I would not put it in as a whole, the way it is purchased. I would only put it in very thinly so that it just holds the media and prevents it from falling out. The spikes on Stanhopeas are super sensitive and are quick to fail if there is too much for them to push through. If you would like to check out this video, where I touch on spikes and their behavior and sensitivity, here is the link ua-cam.com/video/WTnNvMKjddY/v-deo.html the material I used is the inorganic substitute for sphagnum moss that I use, and it comes in form of an extractor fan filter. The white stuff that gets cut into shape for above the hob... not sure if that is what you have in your area, but, if you think of quilt batting, or stuffed animal stuffing, not sure how to describe it otherwise. In this case, I used it as a base for the orchid to maintain humidity, but as the orchid grew and established it's own little eco system, I have removed the excess, and now, you can almost not even see it anymore. I have the same material on my mounts where more moisture retention is required. I hope I described it correctly. Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼 I hope you are having a great day ❤️🌸
Hi Nina, How are you ? so glad you did this video. I have a Stanhopea just bought it this year , so this will help me. thank you . Since they are easy to care for , I'm going to buy a few more. 😁 Also, their growth go to all angles , how do we repot it when we need to up pot it? or should we just use a bigger pot for small plant too?
Hi LienLien 😍💐 its good to see you! I hope that you are doing well 🫶🏼 you will need to make sure that the media you use for your Stan orchids will last at least 2 years, and that would determine your pot size. Unless, you go completely inorganic and then you can choose a big open basket, which will look silly for a couple of years. However, that will have you set for years and years without having to consider a repot, allowing your stan to just grow and take the basket over. As you can see, I don't have a classic orchid basket for stanhopeas. I found a decorative galvanized shallow basket with huge square mesh and then just set the orchid on some water retentive material, if you don't want to go inorganic you can use coco fibre with some bark only, just to keep the media in. However, do not expect to need to repot for a very long time. Stanhopeas will start to create their own microclimate around their roots and structures. However, if the oversized basket is not the way you want to go because your stans are still small, then make sure that you are ready to cut your stan pots completely, rendering them useless for any future use. Once the stan has grown out on several sides, a repot will be difficult without having to cut the next basket to allow for the side growths to fit. I am not familiar with your grow space, what kind of space you have, but I would go with a size your are comfortable with, and then allow the orchid to grow into and 'eat' the shallow basket up. You may not have all the spikes succeed because they are so sensitive in the early stages of their growth, but eventually spikes will find their way and you won't need to do any repotting. My orchid was smallish when it arrived, but it only took 2 years for me to have to deal with it. I don't want to repot stanhopeas anymore. It is a painful procedure for the hands, but also for the orchid. My resituating my stan was absolute carnage. For that reason... not again. If it ever needs anything done to it, I will need a bigger chain 🫣😆 I hope I could suggest some options, LienLien. If you search Stanhopea on my channel you will find several other videos I have done on this orchid. Incl. the traumatic 'repot' after which I needed a drink and a couple of days for my hands to heal 😅 thank you so much for watching! I hope you are having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Hi Nina, I have my stanphonea in a medium plastic net pot.I thought your wire pot was a great idea , and I'm thinking the same idea using the wire pot for it, too. I love using metal hanging wire pot, it saves space, get more orchids. I really don't like to cut the orchid when I have to up pot it. I 'm going to watch your other video on stanphonea before I change repot my stanphonea . Thank you so much for the information ! ❤ Have a wonderful day !
How long does the blooming take place? I can’t find that video but you’d said something about it blooming sequentially and it lasting a bit longer as a result…
🌸🥷🏼 Nina San, hi 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 every spike with it's only blooms, only lasts 3 days. However, because the spikes grow at different times within the flowering period, it feels as though the orchid is in bloom for 6 weeks. That is what I experienced last year, ua-cam.com/video/WTnNvMKjddY/v-deo.html as described in this video. So, if the orchid is young and only produces a single spike or 2, and they bloom out relatively at the same time, the blooming experience is very short lived, 3 days only. However, once the orchid matures, it starts with spikes 'all over' and they don't all mature at once, allowing for a longer experience. I think the video I linked is the one you were thinking of because in that, I talked about spikes and blooms in greater detail. My Stan, started a spike in January of this year, which is super unusual, but it grew very very slowly and only started to take shape with buds in the past 4 weeks as temperatures were more favorable. That spike is currently in bloom, but totally out of season. I am now learning to see if the orchid just had a massive growth increase and all the energy has gone to 42 new growths and the single spike is all I am going to get out of this orchid, OR, I should be seeing the seasonal spikes start to develop within the next couple of weeks IF she sticks to her normal rhythm to be in bloom by the end of June through July. We shall see.... to a spike this early on this orchid, is new to me and I am wondering what I am going to learn next about it 😊 my east patio smells of rich cinnamon... its an insanely amazing fragrance. Just 3 blooms, but wow! Luckily, I will still have them for tomorrow's live stream 🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🙌🏼😅 Thank you so much 🌸🥷🏼 Nina San, for watching! I truly appreciate seeing you and having your incredible support 🫶🏼 I hope you are having a fabYOULous Friday afternoon 🫶🏼❤️🌸

It is called
You'll LOVE it!! Iwanagara Appleblossom is such an awesome plant, the one I had yrs ago grew like crazy and was a very reliable bloomer!! 😀
Such a lovely orchid. Could I use coconut fibre on the base of the basket & what is the white material you've used beneath the orchid?
Thanks Nina.
