Typical structure of a Stanhopea flower and how I care for my Stanhopea impressa

- Parts of the Stanhopea lip are:
Hypochile: upper part with sac that contains the fragrance
Mesochile: in between hypochile and epichile. The connection to the hypochile is called the "knee"
Horns: guide the bee towards the hypochile
Epichile: the lower part where the bee lands
Column across from the rest
PS: This is the American spelling. In British English, the final "E" is dropped: hypochil, mesochil, epichil
PS: the 9 so called "primitive" species (tricornis, candida, reichenbachiana, grandiflora, pulla, ecornuta, cirrhata, annulata, avicula) have a less elaborate lip
Very beautiful garden full of variety of orchids,im one of ur subcribers and hope to learn from ur green thumbs for plants
Beautiful flowers and very interesting explanation. I have had one for a couple of years now and, still no blooms 😩
😁👍❤❤❤ Thank you
Yea…long awaited video! I have one orchid that was gifted to me 4 maths ago; it’s Stanhopea Florida. It’s young so I’m not expecting any blooms this season. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful blooms!
My pleasure!
Very beautiful flowers…wow🎉.
Thank you!
Beautiful flowers. I have bought a division which is small. It is a Stanhopea Golden Egg . When it arrived, it appeared to be very wet in sphagnum moss. I removed it and put it in an orchid medium mix. I removed the yellowing leaves. It has a lot of roots now but no leaves. How long may it take to grow any new bulbs or leaves? All I have now is a single firm bulb. I want to keep it because it is a rare hybrid.
If it grows fresh roots, then the plant is on its way back. Patience LOL.
One bulb is not much but Stanhopeas are eager growers and it may well grow several new bulbs all at once. You just repotted it with a new medium, so the plant must get used to its new "home" first. I would recommend some sphagnum moss in the mix or at least part of the mix with serious moisture retention.
I have several Stanhopeas that lost all their leaves because of a bacterial infection 18 months ago (see my video) and most came back without problems (after a while) . These are hardy plants! Good luck
I looked up Golden Egg and I believe it may not a be hybrid but a cultivar of Stanhopea tigrina? Did you buy it form Orchidweb?
Hi, Thank you so much for your quick response. I wish that I did get it from Orchid Web but I got it from another seller. It would have been in better shape if I got it from Orchid Web when they had the plants years ago.
I did see your video weeks ago about your orchids with the bacterial infection. I sprayed the division with Neem oil as well as a precaution but I basically clipped the leaves anyway
Waiting for mine to do something but maybe I'll change its place as the leaves are not looking tvhat good. It's in shade, but still. thanks for great video! Do you do videos in French?
Cheers and looking forward to the next one.
@@michaeldornan7737 My pleasure.
Enjoyed your video. Which Stanhopea would you recommend it I want just one for my collection here in Pompano Beach.?
I love them all.
The so called 9 "primitive species" are the most suited for our SF climate as they all like it hot while most Stanhopeas prefer more intermediate temps. The primitive species have a slightly different look as their lip is less "elaborate" (often missing horns etc..). Check out Stan. reichenbachiana (pure white) or Stan. annulata (yellow/golden) to see what you think.
In the dark flowers, Stan. tigrina is popular and is the largest flowers but it needs some rest and is not the easiest to grow.
Stan. jenischiana is a common crowd pleaser. Also require a small rest
Stan. platyceras is gorgeous and has typically very dark hypochile.
Stan. wardii is a great pick but is very variable.
In terms of looks, I love hasselowiana (the only one who carries it as far as I know is Peruflora), costaricensis and panamensis but they are also very variable and not so easy to find
@@orchidhouse Thanks. Now the hunt begins......
@@patsfreund9164 Happy hunting!
