- Staining the Flamed Maple Veneer of my Fretwire LP Guitar. Not an easy task. Lots of elbow grease and care. And patience!

Hats off to the UA-cam algorithm again. I just ordered some stuff from Crimson and until it arrives I watch videos to avoid mistakes.
You’re a better man than I! No way I’d attempt any of this. Nice work!
Thank you, sir!!
Thanks for this effort. I am about to attempt the same with a quilt top veneer, and I can see where applying too dark or deep of a base coat requires too much sanding, so I will definitely first, not sand so much beforehand, second thin down the dye about 50%,and third, precoat the top with either water or neutral to assure the black doesn’t penetrate too deep past the first layer of veneer. Very touchy area working with these veneers and your video showed me exactly how far I can go without burning the veneer, which is about the hardest mistake to cover up once it is burned through. Looks great man, thanks for taking the chances I was too nervous to take myself
Us old dudes got to stick together and help each other. I, of course, don’t have the stones to video my first attempt at a veneer top, so thanks from all us grandpa guys for taking the first licks for us. Kudos to you, sir.
Hey just noticed something I’ve had to struggle with getting a process- but right after you hit record on the camera, wait 3 beats before u speak. Even fast focus cameras take a second or two to focus: then you can edit off the out of focus and not lose the speaking. I’ve got a couple of vids where that happened and I just had to leave it in because I was too lazy to reshoot. If your face isn’t in the shot it’s not nearly as noticeable but when it is its self cringe worthy. I’ll usually count it in but that’s an old habit from radio and voicing commercials. Really nice pacing on this - no lulls at all! 🤘🏻
Thanks! I'm working on it!
Looks good so far. I can do a lot guitar maintenance and upgrades, but I have never tried staining one. I have done a table and a couple of bookcases, but no flame tops. 😀
Thanks, brother!
Really like how this came out.
I'm building a 29 inch Baritone lp, planning on making a autumn burst for it.
Thanks!! Very cool!
Right on bro!! I have stained furniture and doors but never a flame top 😁 thanks for sharing that with us and Rock on my friend!!
Thanks!!
i wish you offer me this on my 50th bday ,good job
How to applyng veneer on too lespaul?
I never attach the neck to the body before staining. I do them seperately. Much easier to handle each and hang them up for dry time!.
Leather dyes are perfect for guitars. Get the alcohol based dyes and some teak oil. To avoid over-dying the wood, mix dye and teak oil. Rub it in and keep it wet until it has the color you want, then wipe off all of the excess oil. The next day, if the color isn't as dense as you wanted, just wipe with straight dye. It will not over-penetrate because the teak oil in the wood will limit penetration.
Thanks for that tip bro. Getting ready to screw up my first really expensive build. You may have just saved it !!
@@WilliamLassley Yep, I made all the mistakes so you don't have to. Good luck, and be patient. Nothing can ruin a guitar build like being in a hurry.
Nice. I love the crimson stunning stains. The yellow is SUPER concentrated. It's tricky figuring out the perfect amount of water to dilute it. I'm going to have to buy myself an LP kit eventually. Thanks for sharing this journey!
Thanks for watching!!
How thin was the veneer on the guitar? I'm going to stain my LP kit, but it is very thin and also has what I's describe as stress marks on the wood which I wan to sand smooth, but afraid to sand through the veneer, DId you use wood filler or sealer on the veneer?
Don’t sand any more than absolutely necessary beforehand, and thin the dye down and wipe back quickly. Also using neutral first and color while still wet will keep color from going too deep. Then only sand back what is absolutely necessary, because hiding the burned through spots on a veneer is not for the inexperienced or faint of heart. Better for the stain job to look a bit off than to burn through the veneer.
Veneer is usually about 1/8” to 3/16” thick. Not much.
@@WilliamLassley Thank you! I think I'll go for a better body and neck for my next project
I like the stripes near the 3 way switch. Dark and pronounced. Over priced stew Mac Amber has that real pretty over priced Gibson look. Wonder how that would’ve done with your black and Orange . Looks good though. Easiest quickest probably cheapest way to get it done.
Good job bro... & turning out quite sweet looking, can't wait to see the finished product! Cheer O.G.G.V. Like 14
Thanks, brother!!
I'm not sure if that was intentional, but I like how black accents look uneven at the final product... The final look is very original...
I'm going to try accenting with black dye on a similar flame maple veneer and I was wondering - how did you get away with using the 180 grit sandpaper on the veneer without going through it? I'm really hesitant about touching the veneer with the sandpaper, I was considering if I should start the sanding with 400 or higher...
i wish they would make the cap on these a bit thicker so you can actually sand it without sanding thru it.
Where’s part 1 and 2?
You should have used keda dyes if you wanted yellow to be bright. Keda dyes are the best bright dyes for such tops. Try it up next time
Cool! Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
Nice work,nice guitar.
Looking good Old Guy. Doing a great as far as I can tell, keep it up. BTW... 420 is my favorite sandpaper grit.
Thank you!
Nice! cant wait to see it once you have the top coat on. I think those colors are gonna pop! reminds me I should head out to the shop and work on my burst 12 string kit 😎
Thanks!!
420 grit..... I get it. lol
I have a LP Vintage AFD and the veneers are really light
Is there a way to make them darker?
The only way to make the flames darker is to stain with black, but the risk is that you will completely soak the veneer causing it to potentially lift off depending on the glue used. If you want just the wood to look darker, you can always use a dark wood stain to achieve that goal. Thanks for watching!
Looking good. Nice color and background jam track.
Thanks!!
Its coming along nice. What guitar kit is it? I was thinking of building one too
Thank you! The kit is from Fretwire, which if you are in the US, is a great place to get it. If you are in Canada, Solo has them as well.
@@oldguysguitarvlog183 i will check them out im in the US i seen some from other companys but not this one yet. Thanks!
So far so good !! Looks nice so far !! :)
Thanks!
Did you add water in the cup or jusst pour the water based stain in it?
I didn't dilute the stain at all. Thanks for watching!
Ah ok i might have to try that because with my experience on colortone waterbased stains it seems the colors are too light even if im using a med brown color
@@cabronismo you may have to reapply the color a few times to get the depth you're looking for. Just make sure you don't soak the veneer or it could separate from the wood. Apply one layer. Let dry. Next layer. Let dry, etc until you are happy with the depth of color you're looking for.
Old Guy's Guitar Vlog yeah i initially applied the stain diluted and in one small area the venner actually soaked a lot of water thus i dont want tonapply with water anymore
What grit did you used to sand the base dye?
