Not only the greatest voice of all time, but his characterisations are astonishing. It's almost as if a different performer is playing each role. Peter is truly phenomenal...and a total distraction as his voice and performances demand full attention. Can't have him in the background... such a Gift to music and to the world. His Winterreise is still my favorite.
The one from the Royal Opera House 2009 (Florez/ Spagnoli) is also lovely, as well as a concert version from Vienna 2016 ( 'Gala Latina' - benefit concert for Sinfonía por el Perú), you can find it when you search for "Juan Diego Florez & Adrian Erod - All'idea di quel metallo (Il barbiere di Siviglia)"
Why the Lord hasn't sent me my first million??? Perhaps because I'd insist on seeing .i.e., HEARING, the extraordinary Peter Mattei in every role. His characterisations, through music, movement, personality are so unique and individualised it is as if he is even a different performer....His ability to transform from il Barbiere -giocoso, naughty, to Winterreise, so poignant to the tragic Don Giovanni - whom he humanises with such role fulfillment, such musical elegance, interpretive excellence... is just amazing, and unique in the history of Opera.

This is amazing. I am so disappointed that this production is not available on DVD. I don't know what MET opera is thinking by not making it available.
I was grieving the very same thing and was happy to discover that there is another way to see it for those who missed it or want to re-watch it. Go to the on demand video service of the Met Opera and you will find this production. I prefer having my favourites on disc in my shelf, but in this case I am happy that I get to watch it at all.
