    A little story from a Canadian whose Mother was born in Portsmouth....my Mother's small story told by her...King George V was recuperating from a severe illness at *Bognor, a small town on the South Coast of England. It was a small seaside resort and had a certain reputation for its’ sea breezes and healing properties. My Mother’s parents lived there, Charles and Emily Freeman, and my Mother and I spent most of our holidays there.
    My Mother took me down to the beach one day, and we decided to walk along the sands to where the King was staying at a large private house right on the shore. We were lucky, the King and Queen Mary were out for their morning walk, and we were the only ones there. Queen Mary was pushing King George in a wheelchair along the private promenade in front of the house. I waved and the King waved back. It was quite a thrill for a little girl. It was in gratitude for its healing powers that the Town, after his recovery was in future known as Bognor Regis.

    At 52.53 there's a 1916 penny which might be a rare example of the 'broken tooth' variety. Between the last T of BRITT and the O of OMN is a colon. This points to the rim where one of the dots or teeth is missing. The second 1916 penny at 53.31 doesn't have the broken tooth. IDKY my kids think I'm boring......

    What a massive haul!!! WELL DONE!!!!!
    The 1816 silver broke my heart as that was the year without summer due to a large volcanic eruption which blocked enough sunlight to cause crop failures and famine, and later disease. That coin would have been very dear for many years since its minting.
    BTW, I will never tire of hearing about Gorgeous George. Keep digging him up.

    A shilling is 1/20th of a pound. Twelve pence = one shilling ; 20 shillings makes one pound, so 240 pennies to one pound. Very easy to remember if you are ancient.

      @chewskewsme Рік тому +4

      I grew up on a council estate in London and we had a big Scottish family living amongst us. That meant several weddings and you reminded me of the dad throwing hands full of coins out of the car window as he set off to church with his daughters to ‘give them away’. Maybe a way of sharing his good fortune at easing the financial burden each time a daughter was no longer his responsibility…..

    If there were Oscar's for videos, you would win for this two-part posting. So interesting and historic, but your enthusiasm kept me wanting you to find more and more silver! You bring history alive for many. Now some trivia about Gorgeous George. He attempted to save his counsin, Czar Nicholas, and family, but rescinded his offer when public sentiment waivered. So GG left the Romanov's to their fate ultimately. However, George and Nicholas were almost identical in appearance and first cousins!

    American quilter here. Agree with the "baskets and vines/plant" comments. I don't know what it is, or anything about coins, but stylized quilt designs from the 1800's looked totally like that. Similar versions were also painted onto some furniture, for example Dutch chests and kitchenware.
