As a child, i visited Robin Hood's Bay several times, and stayed in that little white house with the round windows right in front of the beach. I have such strong memories of playing on that beach, finding fossils with my grandparents, going to the sweet shop and the fish and chip shop, going on a ghost walk, and learning about the history in the village museum. Robin Hood's Bay is such a beautiful place, and the history is truly amazing. Did you know that it is named after Robin Hood because he supposedly stayed in the village after a near fatal fight with one of the Sheriff of Nottingham's men? The story goes that he was nursed back to health and healed by the ocean air and the healing plants of the local area. All in all, it was great to see you explore this area, and it brought me a lot of nostalgia. Love the videos!
Tom, I wanted to share how you have inspired me. I've been watching your channel from the early days. This summer I went to London and I went Mudlarking. I found many things but it was all the blue and white China fragments that truly charmed me. I went back to the river, both sides, three more times and took home many blue and white fragments. Earlier this month I applied silver foil to the edges of piece, glued a pendant finding to the back, used headpins to make tree hangers and I was able to decorate a small Christmas tree. It's so pretty. I wish I could share a picture, but, hopefully my description will do.
That sounds lovely @caliatthebeach118. I've just started work on a blue and white craft project too. Hopefully it'll turn out more than half as good as I hope. 🙂
Such a unique, beautiful and interesting part of our coastline, always enjoy visiting. As you were educated on your visit in turn you have educated me on what to look for. Wishing you both a 2023 full of happiness, take care. 🙂🎍
Happy Christmas to all🎄⭐️🎋🕊. Tom a special thanks to you. For me and others it was Christmas Mourning. Strolling about and around, looking at fossils and seas. Playing pirates, a break a holiday away from sadness and loss. My aunt passed away today. The last of seven. They're having a Happy Christmas in Heaven.
Valerie, I am sorry Christmas 🎄😢 isn't a day of cheer. Christmas is over for us 🇦🇺 it's 1:30pm on Boxing Day & 38°celsius and rising. My sad time is 2/1 & 25/1 suicide and death. This at the time of year for cheer. My friend said to burn a 🕯️. Then on their birthday celebrate their beginnings & the joy they gave .💖💖
On every post of yours I'm struck by how calming and pleasant your voice is. It is such a treat to tag along with you and listen to your spontaneous narration. Merry Christmas.
I am seeing this two weeks into 2023. You sir have a most soothing voice, and could probably make ( if we still had them) the telephone directory interesting.
Happy Christmas Tom!!! The reddish brown rocks are most likely septarian nodules they are pseudo-fossils but technically they are rocks. They are concretions of iron rich mudstone which over time would desiccate forming angular cracks. Those voids would be later filled with aragonite or calcite from calcium reach liquids migrating through the rock. They are relatively easy to polish. Maybe its something to try in your rock tumbler if you would find samples small enough.
What a wonderful seaside visit to watch on Christmas Day! I have always loved Geology, so all the beautiful, unique rocks and fossils are just perfect. And the old smuggler's tunnels! I love the mystery and the history! All in all, a charming video! Thanks.
Fascinating. I ve never been to Robins Hood Bay. How strange that nobody had found those coins before you did. I guess there aren’t many people brave enough to go that far into the tunnel. dark, low ceiling caves or tunnels I think are a common phobia.
My favorite Christmas gift; a new video from Tom Burleigh. Tell your girlfriend that I understand that love of the ocean. Swim every chance you get. The fossils are very interesting and I look forward to a time that you are not rushed and can linger on some of the more beautiful ones. I bet people would watch a video of grinding that fossil out; but it is gorgeous the way it is. Good finds in the tunnel! Very exciting adventure. Merry Christmas Tom. Thank you for the video.
Loved seeing the cliffs and rocks, and the walk in the tunnel. I am crazy because I love watching you dig out coins. Any day at the beach is a good day.
Tom, in Michigan we call those stones Lightning Stones. It’s said that was the name given them by the indigenous Americans. They are Septarian nodules. They started out as bacterial colonies over a billion years ago. At least here the crystal veins are Calcite. They are very beautiful polished and sliced.
Came here to say this ^^^ ☺️ That large circular one embedded in the big rock was beautiful! Would love to find one of those in Michigan!! 😍 I'd definitely go back with tools for that one. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!
I think whatever you find or whatever you experience is treasure, Tom! The fossils are amazing and the tunnel is historically significant. Thank you for bringing us along with you!❤️
Tom, I have several Pene shells from my coastal shore. We call them "Beach Tacos' due to the size. Some are even "toothed". But I collect the mother of pearl from them and make resin jewelry.
thing is i see all kinds of things that would interest me. i would b shouting out constantly. i have turned green with jealousy watching you find even scraps of things i have no hipe of ever finding where i live in Western Canada.
Still masking and isolating due to age and asthma, so loving the armchair travels. I would probably not venture into the tunnels though, even if I could! Thank you. That was lovely.
Thanks Artie. I'm a little sad that masking and isolation are still necessary, but glad you're keeping safe. There's a big rise in Flu, Covid-19, and Strep A here. I'm keen to avoid all of them if I can so I'm still masking and mostly isolating too. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
Merry Christmas Tom. I've been watching your videos on my husband Mike's account and had to come subscribe on mine so I can comment. I am a mineral collector and I believe your mineralized balls are septarian nodules. It's a mud fossil filled with calcite. If you have a uv light, next time you are there around dark put your uv on one then take it away. It could have a glow in the dark effect as many do, and certain formations of calcite. It is called Phosphorescence. Just a very fun little experiment. A lot of fossils will also glow in uv light. The nanometers needed should be found on Google by searching "what wavelengths of uv does calcite Phosphoresce under." Hopefully that will get you there. Loved this video, and hope to see more in the future 😀
The fossils were both weird and interesting; the tunnel was intriguing and I wanted to see more; the 3 secs of night footage was gorgeous; your graveyard walk at the abbey sounds amazing; glad you did not get buried in the cliff falls because your videos would be missed; I love that you kept the pirate sword; and finally, Merry Christmas!😬
Thanks for sharing this awesome adventure!!! Some of those rocks with the crazy quartz patterns are septarian noduels or are sometimes called dragonstone or lightning stones and they polish up really nicely. For extracting fossils a dremel 290 is awesome and there is even a fossil extraction tip you can get for it
Thank you, Tom. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. As you are happy to discover new treasures from the past, I am happy to discover and collect the interesting educational bits you so kindly share.

Thanks Guadalupe. I don't find caves and tunnels scary, so I don't think I'm especially brave. Sometimes a little more caution would be a good idea though; got a bit too close to the cliff a few times.🙂
Thanks Catherine, kind words. I do hope to give audiobook reading a try one of these days. And at that place, yes... couldn't fail to find treasures. 🙂
Merry Christmas to you and your girl friend! It was so nice to see the warm beaches after I came in from shoveling in snowy Minnesota! It warmed me up more quickly!
This is a lovely film Tom, I really enjoyed it but I would not go into the tunnel without friends, too spooky, I'm easily spooked! Great advice about the tides and cliffs etc. X
Hi Tom, A lovely video and what a beautiful coastline to do some mudlarking on. Happy Christmas Tom, I hope you and your loved ones had a really great day...🎅⛄👍🏻
I enjoyed your adventure. I’ve seen many videos of fossil collectors along that stretch of beach. Your eye and your camera landing on bits of naturally formed designs delighted me. In the tunnel reminded me of my youth, exploring streams and creeks.
The mention of an old dump in Robin Hoods Bay reminded me of the 2008 cliff fall here in Lyme Regis that exposed a Victorian dump. I find it much more interesting then marine fossils. Lots of car parts, engines and the like strewn all over the shore. But also reminders of peoples lives before us. Most finds are inkwells, bottles, nails and coins etc. Lovely video and most enjoyable commentary, thanks.
Hi Tom and Merry Christmas to you and your lady :) I always love going on a wander with you through creekbeds ,seasides and tunnels and considering that the cold and I don't get on , it's even nicer to do the walk whilst snuggled under blankets :)
Thank you, Tom, and a very happy Christmas to you both. It was lovely to see Robin Hood's Bay again. We holidayed there with family several years ago and spent many happy hours on that beach hunting for fossilized treasures! Have you and your lady ever visited Lindisfarne island? It's such a magical place with many treasures to be found on its gorgeous beaches. We once spent a summer holiday there and I've never forgotten the absolute peace of the place, especially once all the day-trippers had fled back across the causeway to escape the rising tide. Being woken by the sound of the seal colony singing during the night is one of my happiest memories.

I have really enjoyed this video, learning about anything is, for me, a great pass time, the reason for this is because I am bed bound, so not just restricted by sight. You offer a peak into much and fortunately I can lap it up. thanks !
I would love to see a quick meander where you find a few bits and then a bit of crafting. Not worried about the end product or any how to... just a bit of puttering around, giving things a good stare, maybe a story that goes no where.... whatever floats into the thought eddy..... thank you for the visit and all the efforts that go into these videos, I deeply appreciate the travels and companionship.
Thanks Mary, that might be an approach I try sometime. Though I will find it difficult to let go, and do things more casually; I'm always aiming for videos that I won't look back on with cringes, (aiming, but still sometimes missing 🙂). One of my next videos; I did ramble on quite a bit, thoughts branching off away from the core context of where I was.
@@tom_burleigh sir, you will always find something cringeworthy, especially if thats all you're looking for. Better to be looking for giggles, and magic- so much more interesting to find. :) I hope you know, like all the way deep down in the unloved places, that you bring a lovely companionship to the world with your videos. We don't even know what you look like, but it doesn't matter at all. I have a dear friend named Tom Burleigh in the UK, he doesn't force eye contact, he makes silly puns and speaks softly with a lovely tone. We go for walks in odd places and I listen to the water and the leaves, the muddy banks... I never know when he's going to whisk me off for a forage for the lost or forgotten, but its always a gift and most welcome.
You know, your videos are unique. Your videos, those experiences,it’s almost like you are filming using some wonderful technology that not only captures the visual, but the narrative of the mind,as it happens! It is brilliant. Ok there is one or two that narrate in the same vein, and I admire them as well, but you started that inner-thought feel. Happy Boxing Day. I have no idea what that is. I live in Ohio,USA 🙄
Thanks Charles, I'm not sure how I arrived at my approach to videos, but I am glad I did, it seems to work reasonably well. Sorry for the delayed response, My Girlfriend went into Hospital the day after I uploaded this video, and I've been in Nurse mode since. Boxing Day was historically a day when rich people made up gift boxes for servants, and the poor. The servants would have a day off, too. Don't know why one day got a long lasting name; because of such a brief act of almost mandated kindness, when so many rich people gained their wealth primarily by extracting it from the labours of the poor on all the other days. Happy New Year to you, I hope 2023 is a good one for you. 🙂
On a rainy day here in Germany there is nothing more relaxing than to watch your lovely visit to that fossil beach. I love fossils, my best find this year is from the Thames foreshore, a sea urchin. Merry Christmas and happy hunting for the 2023!
Excellent choice of place to explore/mudlark Tom. The beach walk very interesting, the high point being the variety of fossils in all those rocks. Fascinating stuff surrounded by those high cliffs and ponding waves. The walk of those tunnels capped off another enjoyable video. I (Ian) have always been intrigued by stories of smugglers and their hidden caves and tunnels; stems from my young days of reading the Famous Five and the Secret Seven books.
Thankyou Tom, the Bay and Whitby were once regular haunts of ours there are some wonderful tunnels further along the coastal cliffs bit less well known about but easy enough to find if you just explore!! Really enjoyed revisiting a place I have always loved.
Your fossils were very interesting and I am always astounded at how fossil hunters can recognize what is hidden beneath a millennia’s crustacean. I have recently discovered a fossil hunting channel out of New Zealand called @MalamboFossils that I know you would find fascinating. The chap that runs it recently found a penguin fossil that was utterly magnificent!! Anyway, thank you as always for your video, along with your calming voice and commentary. I always enjoy the peace that I feel when watching and listening to them. I hope you and your girlfriend had a lovely Christmas and that you have an equally lovely Boxing Day! Cheers!
Thank you Tom Burleigh, loved spending time watching you today , always a pleasure and never offensive or boring . Loved the tunnel and seeing the small fish was a treat too . Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your Girl friend . Be safe and peaceful . 💖🕊🎄🎆🎇🎊🎉

Hi Tom I will have to rewatch it I just tuned in hope you had a Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks Kandy. I hope you've had/are having a Merry Christmas too. 🙂
You know,your videos are unique.
I live in Ohio,USA
🙄
Very interesting
Merry Christmas
Thanks Judy, and a Happy New Year to you. 🙂
A wonderful time! And thanks for heads-up about at least copying the "Share" link. Did not know about that. Glad to do it :)
Liked the cello version of your song, Happy Christmas
Merry Christmas
“The size of the family car”.😂😂😂
Thankyou Tom, the Bay and Whitby were once regular haunts of ours there are some wonderful tunnels further along the coastal cliffs bit less well known about but easy enough to find if you just explore!! Really enjoyed revisiting a place I have always loved.
Very pleasant end of a depressing day for me, thank you! Pretty village (with such narrow roads!)
Have a great new year...
I'm very sorry you had a depressing day Linda, I hope it's but one amongst many that are happier. I hope you have a lovely New Year 🙂
First time i've watch one of your videos and I enjoyed watching your video well done.
Cheers!
Enjoyed this video, love walking on the Beach,
Thanks Christine, I'm glad you liked it. I hope to get back to the seaside soon.🙂
Thank you Tom Burleigh, loved spending time watching you today , always a pleasure and never offensive or boring . Loved the tunnel and seeing the small fish was a treat too . Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your Girl friend . Be safe and peaceful . 💖🕊🎄🎆🎇🎊🎉
