Beautiful timeless hymn! This presentation gives us a somber look at the truth of the cross and the depth of love that Jesus Christ has for us! He paid a debt He did not owe through His precious shed blood! Hallelujah! 🙏
My late wife of 51 years was gifted with a beautiful alto voice and sang in the choir from around age 12 until she developed Alzheimer's about 10 years ago. It was "angelic." I am sure she fits perfectly into one of a multitude of heavenly choirs.
Does it get any better than this? Solid theology and Scripture in music. Yes, Bach and Handel certainly did it well, and we appreciate that, but this, too, speaks to our souls and hearts. May we ever keep our eyes on the cross of Jesus and be covered with His most precious blood.
This realization was life changing for me. It brought me the knowledge that Jesus is truly God and that He truly loves me enough to suffer and die for me so I could spend eternity with Him. "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us..." (I John 3:1)

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (April 2), I attended a noon Lent service at a local Presbyterian Church. We sang this as the Opening Hymn. It is #101 in The Presbyterian Hymnal.
Still a fave song (1984/85 All Region Choir) and still my fave arrangement. Hearing this on resurrection Sunday makes me appreciate it's words more than it's beautiful choral notes, and I'm very much okay with it. Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice.
I love this song! I was first introduced to this hymn when singing in a choir of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is now one of my favorite hymns and I'd love to see it added to our hymn books with other great songs of Jesus Christ and His Gospel.
I have had the pleasure of being directed under Dr. Noble, and this piece of music, it remains one of my favorites and have sung it many times over the years in various choirs.
Shortly after I became a Christian back in 1999, I was at a conference in Dallas called Focus '99. It was a conference for Christian teenagers and young folks. I was 22 and I was there with some other Christian young folk from my college. The conference lasted three days, I think, with workshops and witnessing opportunities every day and worship services every night. One of the workshops I attended was on world religions and, being young in the faith, I came away from that workshop with more questions than answers. The most worrisome question for me was: How do I know I'm right? How do I know that one of those other religions hasn't got it right, and I'M in the wrong religion? How do I know for sure that Christianity is the way to go?" This question was really perplexing to me because, as you know, the answer to that question has ETERNAL consequences! I was really wrestling with this and very troubled. As a result, I was late to the worship service that evening. When I got there, the band was already playing and the people were already singing. And, still, I was pondering this heavy question in my heart: "How do I KNOW for sure?" At some point, the band, Watermark, who was leading the service, started playing the popular worship song "You Alone". (David Crowder sings a version of it and it's on UA-cam, if you want to hear how it goes.) I wasn't very familiar with the songs, I only knew that one a little bit, and I didn't know that it had a refrain in the middle of it. Then, all of a sudden, they came to the refrain and sang it out and it goes: "...AND IM ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE! I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE, I'M ALIVE!..." And, suddenly, light came flooding into my soul and my burden was lifted and I KNEW!!! "THAT'S how I know!!! BECAUSE. I. AM. ALIVE!!!" John 5:24 says: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." And 1 John 3:14 says: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death." I didn't know about those verses at that time. All I knew was that God had revealed to my heart and I KNEW that Jesus Christ is Lord and that Jesus Christ is THE ONE, TRUE SAVIOR because I am ALIVE!!! In other words, even though I didn't know about those Bible verses back then, I KNEW that Jesus Christ is Lord and that Jesus Christ is THE ONE, TRUE SAVIOR because I knew because God had revealed to my heart that I had passed from death to life, and I. AM. ALIVE!!!

Its interesting how certain key signatures and their attendant modulations in an arrangement like this....cause the soul to SOAR. When that last b flat (is it b flat?) went to the four chord (and so e flat)...and the choir came in for the final amen I about lost it. Amazing arrangement. Definitely inspired. The physics of music and sound can be quite miraculous. And this is one of them no doubt....
At 3:53, I thought I was gonna lose it. Not many pipe organs sound like that. And little Frederick knows how to play them, for sure. I am in awe at this performance. The last key change is to an A major. If you listen with earphones, you will hear a couple of sopranos hitting the high C# while all of the other sopranos as hitting the high A (which is written in the song). Thank you for sharing this!
I practically envy your ability to listen to this and identify every chord and every note. Before thyroid cancer, I was a mezzo soprano, and had perfect pitch, and always knew what note came next by memory, but I couldn't never keep the names of the notes and chords straight to save my life, lol...still can't. That's a wonderful gift you have!
Can't wait for the Southern Adventist University Chorale reunion to rehearse and perform this with the Anton Heiller Memorial Organ in Collegedale, Tennessee, at Homecoming.
The tenor part is absolutely glorious. Sing your heart out ! Not too hard. I usually can’t get through the last verse. When our organist opens the organ on the last part of the last stanza, “My life, my all” I usually lose it. Then he hits the tutti button and opens the organ up totally as we are singing the final “Amen”. That last chord on full organ giving the roaring conclusion to the hymn kills me. I’m a complete wreck.

We sang this song in our High School A Capella Choir in the early 90's. It was a favorite. I don't know if any public school would allow their choir to sing this song, anymore--unlikely in today's politically correct environment.

Awesome, awesome choir, but ... their "s" sounds ruin the song in places. More hissing than a mad snake. And the choir is not following the music director in places. But the ending? Wow! The last 30 seconds is breathtaking. Little Frederick outdid himself, for sure. And to whomever recorded the last 30 seconds? You are truly, truly, truly awesome! Goose bumps are all working, for sure!
If it not broken don't fix it. I love this hymn and I have selected it to be sung at my funeral. I think this is an awful arrangement. This is not a reflection on the choir who did a great job with an awful arrangement .

The alto in this piece makes you fall in love with the alto voice. Marry yourself an alto gentlemen.

I was 16 years old when I first heard this arrangement. In 2018, I consider it to be one of the best choral arrangements ever composed of this hymn!

My choir sang this arrangement this year and I fell in love with it. The Tenor 1 part is such a blast
The first time I sang this arrangement as part of our choir (alto) at one point my knees actually buckled I was so moved.
Every time on Good Friday when we sing this the one verse on which the prince of glory died always makes me cry

The tenors and basses sound too heavy and causes them to be somewhat flat.
