I just removed a third valve slide with a screwdriver and a table knife. I inserted them in the fingers of a pair of rubber gloves to protect the brass. I used a glass bottle for leverage. It was quite satisfying when it finally opened!

I recently started playing trumpet again. I stopped to pursue being an audio engineer, which I did for over 20 years. During that time, my Bach Stradivarious was left in its case and not touched, but before I packed it away, I oiled the valves and greased the slides. After 20+ years, the entire trumpet came apart easily, cleaned up nicely, and after being cleaned and properly greased and lubed, it's playing good as new. A little care goes a long ways. For those who don't, I like your use of rather commonly available tools to address the problem. At the same time, sometimes it's best to take it in to a repair shop. Know your limits.

With all the brass instruments you see come into your shop, which brand do you see the least trouble with? Or, do you have a recommended brand for student models which hold up the best with regular care? Thanks for all the great videos.

Thanks. It worked beautifully on my Bb horn. Did you ever work on a Bach Chicago C Trumpet? Does it have the same type of third slide?

I’ve bought a new adams a5 recently but I didn’t know that the 3th valve slide could remove the top. Now, I don’t really like that... it opens automatically when pressure builds up in the horn. So the tuning is off. I hope the shop can fix this so that this doesn’t occur.

Ok, the slide your are showing that gets stuck...mine there seems to be extra pressure as I am playing my trumpet to the point it will almost shoot off of the trumpet itself. Any idea how to fix that or what is causing this pressure build-up?

Usually there is not very much air pressure on the inside of a trumpet. However, there are some notes that have a certain frequency that can create lower and higher pressures in certain places on a trumpet. One of those notes may cause a higher pressure in the place where the slide is. Also, slides can come out due to gravity. You can fix it by using a slide expander to expand the slides just a little bit. You have to be very careful while doing this because it can cause damage if you go too far.
