Now this video kind of bring me back to my art class studying in Singapore. Our teachers often encourage us to use cheaper watercolor like the pentel or sakura but often times we have to buy the higher end watercolour like the W&N Cottman and also their brushes are some of the best back when they are not made in China. Still using my brush I bought in year 1994 and they are still great.
I’ve been using a Cotman travel palette for my plein air painting and find the colors are just what I want. Most all of my work is outdoors, in a semi-arid part of the country. I do not want/need very intense color in that my countrysides are more earthy. Cotman fits my budget too. W-N and D-S are often too pricey for my expertise. I still love your videos because I learn something new most everyone time I watch one. Thanks for the help.
I love your videos. I watch them even if the subject is not one I am particularly interested in. Great work keep it up. I would love to see more of you sketching and painting in real time, with your thoughts and tips though.
i use W&N hand in hand with my M Graham Watercolors. W&N are a good brand and I don't have any complaints about them. They mix well with other paints when using them too so that's another plus in my opinion.
I also have the pocket box and love it. I started out with Pentel tubes then jumped to W&N Cotman and now I'm using W&N Artist only. Itis true I've never used others yet so far I'm delighted and in no hurry to look out for other brands. They dissolve easily, superb transparency and pigment concentration is always on point. Something I could mention is you can noticeably feel the great ease while working with them, they work marvels for you when combined with good quality paper. Great review, amigo. -A
Thanks so much Teoh! I am ready to step up from student grade paints, and trying to spend the money wisely. I like that the WN is available at the art supply stores and so many others you have to order online. That is a plus for WN. I have seen many artist go for the super expensive paints, like the m.grahams or the sennelier. I have seen many of your comparison videos and you also like Daniel Smith paints. I'm going to buy the WN ones and start there. I trust you, you do great work and are very experienced. Thanks Teoh!
Just found your channel as I am just getting into water colors. I thank you for your honest reviews & you sharing your knowledge with us as you seem like someone I could trust when it comes to paints as it seems you are very experienced. Thanks again. You gained a new sub.
Thanks, Teho..I also like Windsor Newton. I began painting with the Cotman set of 12, (and also am a Daniel Smith fan) but.WN is still one of my favorites.."go to" sets when painting warm ups or simple Line and Wash sketches.
I have the 24 half pan generic box with logo bought in 2014 and made in France and which were marketed then as artists colours. I like them better now than when I first bought them; once you have got through the top layer of paint they work beautifully. I think this might be typical of extruded paint. I am not sure about the newer Chinese made ones. I believe the French version were made by a very good historic paint company. I would give my eye teeth for the box you have but can only find the huge one or the tiny one. The one you have is now rare as hens teeth! I have added about 8 colours to the box at the ends and in the middle. Only one colour is not good, and that is aureolin, which has visibly changed colour in the box. I bought an identical looking Cotman box, slightly different logo in 2016, it is far inferior to the tiny pocket box I have had for around a decade, and I didn't like using them at all unlike the paint in the smaller box which gave great results at the time. The cost of watercolours has just rocketed in four years. Though I paid low prices for all three boxes I have mentioned here from a great seller my Cotman 24 set cost half as much again as I paid for the artists version two years earlier. and now the cheapest professional set costs at least three times that, even when on sale. In four years! Goodness knows how expensive they are in some countries! I think there are other very good options for less these days, that will produce great results. The comparable British company is Daler Rowney, I was gifted an artists quality set of these and find them excellent, they are half pans, not the tube colours which some dislike. They are still made in the UK afaik.
I really want that compact tin. It looks more convenient than the long 24-pan tin boxes. I don't mind not having space for brushes or pencil since I put everything in a pencil case anyway.
.....been using W&N for awhile now....love the vibrancy and how soft these stay in the pans...makes them mix easier....great review Teoh, and loved the sketch......
I like your sketch! I have been using wn watercolors for years. I have no complaints. They seem to be the standard i compare other brands to. Thanks for the video.
I like the WN cotman, pretty good for me - I also use Grumbacher artist tubes. I am torn between liking pans verses tubes in pans, I had to take some time to appreciate both. I like that I can buy the cotman paints cheaper. I don't like being an artist on a budget, but I can do some great work using the cotman. And most people viewing the art don't know the difference unless they are also experts. Your videos, like always are my favorites to watch before I buy - thank you, Teoh.
My favourite colour is WN winsor blue (green shade) after watching your videos I feel I should check what pigment etc but never remember. I think it is a form of pthalo blue.
As a beginner my question is how much of each color--proportion wise-do you mix for your color chart. It would seem to me that that would be very important in your results. thanks for a great video I am awaiting the WN Cottman set...I presently have the KOI Field box....thank you Julie
I generally mix until the mixture appears to be somewhere in between. Some colours have high tinting strength and only require a tiny bit for mixture. E.g. To get a bright green, you have to use lots of Lemon Yellow with just a tiny bit of Phthalo Blue because Phthalo Blue is such a strong colour.
i ended up getting the winsorand newton 12 color portable set because Art friend didn't have stock for Daler rowney aquafine pocket set that everyone in my school was using. im not sure what to think of it < D but i haven't really been using my set properly, tho i sometimes feel Daler rowney is a bit better cause the colors they have seem brighter then winsor and newton?
They should be quite similar in quality. I didn't know that ArtFriend sells the Winsor & Newton pan sets. Anyway, you can swap out the colours for the better quality Artist grade tube paints easily.
Windsor Newton is more available than any other brand in my town. I can't find M. Graham or Daniel Smith at the stores. I can find Grumbacher, which is a student grade. I also wish WN was not so expensive. I like them alot! I use some of the cotman, they are better than other student grades. Thanks for your comparison! I love your videos!
Can you perhaps do a video about the various hues that granulate, stain, the pros and cons, how it affects color mixtures, how it might be used to create deliberate effects, etc? Also, do you ever use glazing techniques?
+Marisa Hernandez I'll make some videos on the watercolour attributes in the future. I seldom use glazing. Although I do use layering to add shadows or enhance colours.
+markallenwils Difficult to answer since I usually run out of individual colours first. Colours I refill more often are yellow, Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna.
All the colours in this box set has already been jumbled up with a mixture of Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith and other brands. I also can't remember the exact colours. The standard colours should be close to this: www.dickblick.com/items/00319-0121/
Im currently using Da Vinci watercolor for my Hansa light yellow it has been the only one that mixes well for transparency. Most others seem stain and over ride the pale light yellow I'm looking for ...any opinion ?
Hi Teoh, Thank you for yet another interesting video. I 'd be interested to see a side by side comparison of W&N Cotman vs artist grade. Would you be able to do that review? Many thanks in andvance!
+Piefje P Main difference is just their pigment concentration. I personally feel that Cotman loses their vibrancy with mixing a bit faster compared to artist grade. However, they are still quite intense out of the tube. Cotman is good for beginners. There's an artist Holly Exley who uses Cotman paints and her work is amazing hollyexley.blogspot.com
Hi Teoh, I'm enjoying watching your videos. I think you have sparked an interest in me to paint. I was starting to look at oils but they are not the place to start learning to paint I don't think. So I was stalled because it was so daunting. But watercolours on the other hand look much easier to learn. Your art is wonderful. I am traveling to Hong Kong at the end of the week. While I can buy the Winsor Newton Cotman sets in Australia where I live, they are cheaper in other parts of the world. Do you happen to know of any art suppliers in Hong Kong that stock these water colours? TIA Paul.
I've been painting for decades now and I can say confidently that oil painting is way easier to master than watercolour. Watercolour might just be the hardest technique, unless you are sketching as in a pen-n-wash style like Teoh is doing in his sketches. Oil is predictable and with a few guidelines you have to follow it is enough to control the media. Watercolour on the other hand has you relying on the way the water flows on the paper. Of course you can control it but you have to be comfortable with uncertainty to a certain degree. But then watercolour requires less materials, is cleaner, and portable so the appeal is understandable and quite worth it IMO :)
I've noticed that I have W&N Cotman pans that are made in China and pans taht are made in France. I also notice that China pan cakes are a bit bigger (in height). I wonder, is there any difference between them in quality? Did maybe W&N move production to China or is there like "better" pans from France nad bad from China?
I really like your videos and opinions, I´m an Illustrator, mostly I made digital art, but I love watercolor, I'm from Colombia, so I can relate with the fact, that you don't get many brands easily available, but you definitely can find the Winsor & Newton, only the Cotman are available here in Bogotá, but i find them really good quality, you can get it for around $100.000, and that is really a bummer, because thats like 33 dollars, quite expensive, but that's what you get, is really the best watercolor i can find, here is very common find the pebeo and the reeves in tubes, and many people considers this brands like semi professional.... I know... youtube, really opens your mind, I'm looking forward to get a really artist quality watercolors, and your videos have made this decision really easy for me, thanks anyway.
Great video... very informative! I have watched several of your videos now and enjoy them, as well as learn from them... Thank you for taking the time and effort to post them!! cheers :)
I absolutely love your channel ! I could watch your videos for hours💖💕💕 great video as always . I gotta say I like winsor & newton watercolors but don't find they rewet as well as daniel smith . some of my W & N dried into hard rocks 😢
Hi Jin, I suggest you take a look at Steve Mitchel's (Mind of Watercolor) post - "SHOWDOWN! Cheap vs Good Quality Watercolor Paper" - ua-cam.com/video/zEC0-PRmw10/v-deo.html It took me a long time to accept the truth because I really am a stingy mutt, but the fact is Paper is everything - you can skimp on anything else but not the paper, it's just false economy. Buy a good quality 100% Cotton paper. If not, you will be fighting the cheap paper every step of the way ...and "convince yourself it must be something you are doing wrong" - streaks, back-runs, hard edges or blotchy flat washes. Ironically, experienced painters can sometimes mitigate these problems and still achieve a good painting but for the novice, you'll just be setting yourself up a mountain of unnecessary hurdles. I know pads and blocks are nice and convenient but if you buy loose full imperial sheets, the cost difference is negligible and may work out cheaper per page than buying student grade cellulose paper in pad form. I work on 1/8th sheet size 11" x 7.5" so I cut down a Full sheet of Saunders Waterford which is about £3.45 per sheet here, into 8 sheets, working out about 43 Pence per sheet - If I'm just practising, I can turn it over and use the other side so 21 Pence per side - It just makes no sense buying the cheaper stuff.
For beginners, White Nights. Note that Winsor & Newton has artist quality paints, so those would be better but also more expensive. Their student grade is called Cotman.
Yea i've already worked with van gogh but i was searching for one similar, i saw the cotman too and watched your review, aren't cotman and white nights similar ?
White Nights have the ambition to be artist grade, so they're nice to paint with. But their pigment selection is oldfashioned. If permanence is an issue for you, you need to handpick your colors. Check out their lightfastness information. www.stpetersburgwatercolours.com/colours.html Every single color in the latest generation Cotman range is made with extremely good, durable, modern pigments. (As is VanGogh). I think White Nights are nicer to paint with (big pans, easily dissolved, strong), but Cotman is far more reliable for the unwary and the finished results look good.
Fantastic video. Which do you think is better out of the 2. Schminke or NW artist ? They are very expensive and I want to invest in one of them. Thanks.
@@budakart The rust will only happen at places where there's no paint. I've many metal palettes and rust is usually not a problem. There are also palettes that use metals that dont' rust. Or just get a plastic palette.
+Angela Bong You can get that metal box from Arters Singapore. arters.com.sg/ As for the watercolours, Winsor and Newton you can get them from ArtFriend. I get Daniel Smith from Arters.
Hey Teoh! first of all, your videos are awesome, hope you are doing ok. I have been trying to find this set online because of the portability of 24 pans in a relatively small box and also have a good mixing area, but cant find this 16 pan box, does it have a specific name or something? I live in Argentina but my brother in Germany could get it for me.
The company that makes Van Gogh (student grade) also makes the artist quality Rembrandt series. Similarly, Winsor and Newton has both artist and student grade. I should think that their student vs student and artist vs artist should be comparable. Just get whatever that's easier and cost effective for you.
Hi Teoh! Just wondering, would you happen to know whether the W&C 16 Half-Pan Heavyweight Box is still being sold? After watching your videos/reading your reviews I decided I'd buy it, but I actually can't seem to find them anywhere! Thanks again for the helpful videos, I always refer to your reviews before making any watercolour-related purchase, haha.
+JayTheBirdFlyZ In this video the paper is Daler Rowney Aquafine 300gsm coldpress. I use that for testing art products because they are cheap. For actual work I want to keep, I use Fabriano Artistico 300gsm coldpress. Here are examples from Fabriano paper www.parkablogs.com/picture/all-my-sketches-melbourne-and-sydney-2015
Hi Teoh! I'm from singapore as well and I'm wondering where do you get your watercolour supplies from? Particularly Winsor & Newton's watercolour sets because I can't seem to find it from artfriend/overjoyed. Thank you!!
+xue ping The box sets are bought online (sometimes eBay) while the tubes are bought at ArtFriend. Arters Singapore sell the box. You can then buy the watercolour tubes and empty pans yourself. arters.com.sg/store/boxes-and-palettes/445-watercolor-travel-size-box-empty.html
+Jiang Jay Depends on what you want to achieve. I personally prefer sable brushes. A bit more expensive but can last longer than synthetic brushes in my opinion.
+Tanyue Xue Depends on where you are. Daler Rowney Aquafine paper is good and cheap. You can consider Fabriano Studio 25 too. Check out Bee Paper Company also.
Hi Teoh, Love your very informative videos, I have learnt so much from them. I have a question about W/N Artist Paints... Could you please explain to me the different series number meanings. Thank you.
+Aelle Ae11e I can't remember where I bought mine. ArtFriend does sell box sets, but not sure if it is the same one. Go check out Straits Art across the street too. They sell watercolour box sets as well.
WN heavy weight enamelled 12full pan box being sold in the UK, but without WN logo on the lid of the pallet in these days. Do you know where can I buy heavy weight 16 half pan or 12 full pan box with WN logo? I think it is old version from WN.
Do you have any problems with tubes being squeezed into pans? I know that the company doesn't recommend it because they say it can develop mildew and mold if you subject to repeated wetting and drying (probably with tap water). Or do you think it's just a marketing technique for them to get people to spend more money.
+My Panda Paints You should always dry the watercolour paints in the box before keeping them. If you don't, it will develop mold. I have had mold develop before so I always dry my palette boxes properly and keep them in well ventilated areas. Ever since I do that, I no longer have any problems with mold (for years). M Graham tube paints have honey so they stay moist longer and are not as suitable compared to other brands when it comes to squeezing them into pans. Generally speaking, you save a lot of money by getting tubes (15ml) to squeeze into the pans (2ml). I've a video on watercolour tubes vs pans. Watch it at ua-cam.com/video/wNNKAwA4PxI/v-deo.html
+Teoh Yi Chie I've seen it and yes. I always dry it out before storing. I don't use much of Winsor and Newton watercolor tubes because they specifically state that their formulation is not made to be dried in pans due to blah blah blah. So I was just asking your experience in their tubes vs pans. W&N reps have stated that their tubes, when dried, will ultimately start to harden more as they get used more and not dissolve completely, they also have a greater risk of mold and mildew due to their formulation. I was just wondering if what the company says holds true to real world use. I personally have noticed that the couple W&N tubes I have tend to release less pigment when rewet than their pan counterpart just like how W&N state they will act. But I mostly use their other mediums (oil paints...) and stick to M. Graham, Daniel Smith, and QoR for WC paints.
+My Panda Paints The tube paints may be more difficult to rewet when dried in pan. However, it also depends on the pigment. Some pigments will dry into a hard rock (Viridian) and it will be too difficult to use afterwards. Generally speaking, I've not had any problem with my paints getting too hard. I always put a drop or two of water into the pans that I want to use. I find that it softens up the paint slightly, and makes it easier to pick up paint with brush. In fact, I find that those pans in pan sets are the ones that are more difficult to dissolve. Anyway, I've created a video to answer this question that I'll upload in a few days time! Your question gave me the idea to create the video.
+Teoh Yi Chie Yes. I know about the differences in pigments and I usually spray my palette with water depending on the brand. I find I don't need to with M. Graham nor QoR. You can disregard this thread as I think you are thinking I'm asking another question than I actually am. I thought I was coming across clearly so I actually deleted a sentence prior stating, "I'm not talking about the hardness you experience with certain pigments such as Viridian or Raw Umber, I am speaking of a general feel across the entire line." So I will just take your answer to be a simple "No." Which was basically what I was asking. It's funny that W&N are so adamant on NOT squeezing their tubes out to dry in a palette, going as far as to give excuses why.
+My Panda Paints Oh. I've already created a video for that to compared dissolving WN tubes dried vs pans. It should be helpful for other people as well. Will upload that in a few days time.
You need more paint from Cotman to get the same level of intensity of WN Professional. This means you're likely to use up Cotman paints faster, at least for selected colours that are weaker.
Defintely no longer the company we knew. No longer british high quality colours. No more commitment to the arts. They moved from UK to France in 2011 and fired 200 long time employees in UK. Just to make Big money by selling Winsor and Newton factory in Harrow to real estate companies. Product portfolio has been drastically reduced. Terrible loss of knowledge, craftmanship and quality. Colours are now made in France and China (!!) In cheap plastic colour palettes. Now just another anonyme global company, called Colart. Nothing genuine. Based on this latest change in manufacturing colours, products are completely overpriced. I use now Schmincke colours. A family owned manufacturer based in Germany. Highly commited to provide the best colours for more than 100 years. They offer an excellent range and quality of colours.
+Bingsu Wow. I can't really remember what's inside that box as I switch around with other boxes quite often. What I can say is there's a warm and cool version yellow, red, blue, then there's Sap Green, Phthalo Green, Burnt Sienna and other earth tones. Check out this article for colours that I currently use, mainly Daniel Smith: www.parkablogs.com/content/colours-pick-12-pan-watercolour-palette
when I go to your page, i get tiny message that the page is trying to load (additional stuff??) from unauthorized sources. I love the page. But what can this scary message mean? It gives me option to allow them to load or not. i said no.
Can't tell if youre from Malaysia or Singapore, judging by your accent! Haha. Where can I get Winsor Newton paints? Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places, but so far, I've found that Malaysia's supply of big name brands from the US are disappointingly limited. Do you buy yours online?
+aidreu Haha. I'm from Singapore. I bought most of my brands online, from Amazon (mostly) and eBay. Sometimes you can find good deals on eBay. Or you can just buy empty boxes and load them with your own tube paints. Winsor Newton tubes can be found at ArtFriend Singapore. If you buy box sets, I recommend you compare prices with Amazon USA as their prices are quite competitive.
Hello, you are Malaysian right? I bought some Copics at Art Friend, and I do think that Winsor & Newton brands are available there. It kinda depends where you live tbh.
Rainbow Dipped hey I am from malaysia, yeah. Thanks for the reply! I found the winsor newtons in art friends the other day, I own the small Cotman set now :) Also saw the 45 pans in an art store called Stickerrific!
That's the funniest question I've seen in a while. I'm not sponsored by them. I have three t-shirts, red, yellow and green. I like to wear them while making video because they dry my sweat faster especially when it's humid and hot. Sometimes I sweat a lot making videos in the afternoon as it's really hot. As to why you see them so often, it's because I can make three videos on one day wearing the same shirt. On YT, it would seem like I'm wearing them every day. LOL.
Hi Teoh! I love to watch all your video as you always bring a lot information that I need. I am not a professional, just a mommy that love to enjoy simple water coloring for relaxation :D err .. I search many source for a beautiful skin color and I love the one you use on your sketch on this video, as they are a lapse could you please help me to know the colors you use for this skin color ? Thanks in advance and always looking forward for your next video.
My skin tones are usually mixed from a muted yellow and warm red. E.g. Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, with a warm red. Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/BaF1ZhRXiSU/v-deo.html

Sueton i see.. i guess i’ll have to go to your suggestion then! i never knew W&N Cottman watercolor turned to a much bad quality than it was before!! but which is more expensive?
It is a shame and sad for the company, but regarding quality of the professional paints I understand the French company are sticking to the same recipes in the paints. (although tube colours are no longer recommended for decanting into pans). I have sets of various ages and many paints from the 80s and 90s as well as newer sets and I haven't noticed any degradation of quality. Some pigments have changed due to availability and often that is true across the various brands. I have no problem with continuing to use W n N....I use many other brands also, so it's not a case that's all I use.
That's interesting news. I too have been a great fan of W&N watercolor and have got their heavyweight 12full pan metal box as well as the Bijou box. They are just top notch products. It sad that such a great company had to end like this. It's just that name now it seems.
Now this video kind of bring me back to my art class studying in Singapore. Спасибо за видео! Мне очень нравится, как чётко ты говоришь на английском, я понимаю абсолютно всё) Очень приятная речь и полезное видео)
My favourite colour is WN winsor blue (green shade) after watching your videos I feel I should check what pigment etc but never remember. I think it is a form of pthalo blue.
That's Phthalo Blue
Teoh Yi Chie Thanks, I am going to experiment, it doesn’t seem as strong as Schminke, now you have kindly answered I will swatch them.

Thanx
i ended up getting the winsorand newton 12 color portable set because Art friend didn't have stock for Daler rowney aquafine pocket set that everyone in my school was using.
im not sure what to think of it < D but i haven't really been using my set properly, tho i sometimes feel Daler rowney is a bit better cause the colors they have seem brighter then winsor and newton?
They should be quite similar in quality. I didn't know that ArtFriend sells the Winsor & Newton pan sets. Anyway, you can swap out the colours for the better quality Artist grade tube paints easily.
Are the Professional Winsor Newton paints made in France when purchased in Japan?
How often do you have to refill your 12 pan set?
+markallenwils Difficult to answer since I usually run out of individual colours first. Colours I refill more often are yellow, Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna.
What is the difference between student grade artist grade and cotton men's grade I believe that's right
Hello Teoh, another good video, what brushes are you using in this video please?
Theo, can you provide a full list of the colours you have in your 24 pan box please.
All the colours in this box set has already been jumbled up with a mixture of Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith and other brands. I also can't remember the exact colours.
The standard colours should be close to this:
www.dickblick.com/items/00319-0121/
That was informative and i like your line drawing too. Thanks
Im currently using Da Vinci watercolor for my Hansa light yellow it has been the only one that mixes well for transparency. Most others seem stain and over ride the pale light yellow I'm looking for ...any opinion ?
PY3 is low staining so the paint may get picked up again with subsequent washes. If you want permanent colours, look for staining yellows
thanks for ur great art tutorials they r really very helpful
Hi Teoh, Thank you for yet another interesting video. I 'd be interested to see a side by side comparison of W&N Cotman vs artist grade. Would you be able to do that review? Many thanks in andvance!
+Piefje P Main difference is just their pigment concentration. I personally feel that Cotman loses their vibrancy with mixing a bit faster compared to artist grade. However, they are still quite intense out of the tube. Cotman is good for beginners. There's an artist Holly Exley who uses Cotman paints and her work is amazing hollyexley.blogspot.com
+Teoh Yi Chie Thank you. When my budget allows it I'll give the artist grade a try. I had a look at Hollys work: love her style.
Piefje P Try looking for the White Nights 12 pan watercolour set on eBay. Those are good value for money too.
TIA Paul.
+Paul Kennedy Not sure about art stores in Hong Kong. Maybe you will want to ask people from Urban Sketchers Hong Kong uskhongkong.blogspot.com
+Teoh Yi Chie thanks mate. I'll do that. Also a quick search on Google showed up better results than I'm used to for HKG.
The irony is, with my El Cheapo WC paints (non-flowy, not nearly transparent enough), I could be painting "like" non-WC mediums ...!!
Not sure if there would be any difference if (big if) they use the same formula for their paints.
Hi, you can check out eBay for White Nights watercolour. Look for those with free shipping. The quality is good.
Great video... very informative! I have watched several of your videos now and enjoy them, as well as learn from them... Thank you for taking the time and effort to post them!! cheers :)
+s olsen Thanks for the support 😁
I use WnN so far i tried some cheap paint from market, also reeves, but wisor so far is the best i tried. Rich in pigment and not that expensive
I absolutely love your channel ! I could watch your videos for hours💖💕💕 great video as always . I gotta say I like winsor & newton watercolors but don't find they rewet as well as daniel smith . some of my W & N dried into hard rocks 😢
Thanks :-D
What paper would be best for watercolor??
Which one do u think it's better, the winsor & newton , van gogh or the white nights?
For beginners, White Nights. Note that Winsor & Newton has artist quality paints, so those would be better but also more expensive. Their student grade is called Cotman.
Yea i've already worked with van gogh but i was searching for one similar, i saw the cotman too and watched your review, aren't cotman and white nights similar ?
White Nights have the ambition to be artist grade, so they're nice to paint with. But their pigment selection is oldfashioned. If permanence is an issue for you, you need to handpick your colors. Check out their lightfastness information.
www.stpetersburgwatercolours.com/colours.html
Every single color in the latest generation Cotman range is made with extremely good, durable, modern pigments.
Thanks.
+runa begum Personally I think they are equally good, just get the one that is easier to replace when you run out of paints.
Can the metal palette rust?
Yes.
@@teohyc thank you for your reply. I was thinking of purchasing one. Do you think it's a good idea?
@@budakart The rust will only happen at places where there's no paint. I've many metal palettes and rust is usually not a problem. There are also palettes that use metals that dont' rust. Or just get a plastic palette.
Hi Mr Teoh, I would really appreciate it if could you share where you get your art supplies, especially this watercolour set, in Singapore?
+Angela Bong You can get that metal box from Arters Singapore. arters.com.sg/
As for the watercolours, Winsor and Newton you can get them from ArtFriend.
I'm just curious are winsor and newton better than van gohg??
The company that makes Van Gogh (student grade) also makes the artist quality Rembrandt series. Similarly, Winsor and Newton has both artist and student grade. I should think that their student vs student and artist vs artist should be comparable. Just get whatever that's easier and cost effective for you.
+Teoh Yi Chie thankyou....Btw love all of yours video 💗💗💗
yea
i can only afford one watercolor set at the moment and i was wondering which would you recommend the most.. the wn cotman or the prima classics?
+Jovanna Jade Estrada Both are good. Get the one that is easier to buy for you.
+Rowena M [ROMIMZA] You can buy it from Arters arters.com.sg/store/
You have a nice day, too :)
What kind of paper do you use? Like what brand and grain?
+JayTheBirdFlyZ In this video the paper is Daler Rowney Aquafine 300gsm coldpress. I use that for testing art products because they are cheap. For actual work I want to keep, I use Fabriano Artistico 300gsm coldpress. Here are examples from Fabriano paper www.parkablogs.com/picture/all-my-sketches-melbourne-and-sydney-2015
Teoh Yi Chie Ahhh, thank you so much! ^0^
+Teoh Yi Chie thank you!! :)
Question, is it worth to buy?
It's worth it
hi, what kind of the brush do you use or recommended?
+Jiang Jay Depends on what you want to achieve. I personally prefer sable brushes. A bit more expensive but can last longer than synthetic brushes in my opinion.
Do you have any recommended watercolour paper for students, beginners and is cheap?
+Tanyue Xue Depends on where you are. Daler Rowney Aquafine paper is good and cheap. You can consider Fabriano Studio 25 too. Check out Bee Paper Company also.
Hi Teoh,
Love your very informative videos, I have learnt so much from them.
I have a question about W/N Artist Paints... Could you please explain to me the different series number meanings. Thank you.
+Judy-Ann Ford Series mean the price range. Series 1 is cheapest. But cheapest does not mean it's poorer quality.
Thank you Teoh.
Please let me know what is the camera that you have used to make your videos
+Ahmed Farghal Panasonic GH4 with Olympus 12-50mm
Where did u buy your 12 pan set? And how much is it? Did u buy it online or in store? Art friend got sell that one?
Thank you very much for this vid! Do you find there's much difference in the quality between WN professional and cotman watercolours?
They offer an excellent range and quality of colours.
hey teoh/ yi chie, what 12 colors do you have in your pocket w&n box? ^^
+Bingsu Wow. I can't really remember what's inside that box as I switch around with other boxes quite often. What I can say is there's a warm and cool version yellow, red, blue, then there's Sap Green, Phthalo Green, Burnt Sienna and other earth tones.
Check out this article for colours that I currently use, mainly Daniel Smith:
www.parkablogs.com/content/colours-pick-12-pan-watercolour-palette
when I go to your page, i get tiny message that the page is trying to load (additional stuff??) from unauthorized sources. I love the page. But what can this scary message mean? It gives me option to allow them to load or not. i said no.
w&n vs mijello?
Similar quality. Mijello Mission Gold is more affordable but the paint is not suitable for pouring into pans to dry
Bonita Glaser
Thank you
great video. congratulations!
+Silvia Meneses Thanks 😁
How is it? I'm going to Art Friend tommorow, my dad's going to buy me copics, but hey, I could try to search 'em.
Ooh that's great! :) They're really good, I prefer them over Daler Rowney, to be honest.
So I was wondering..Are u sponsored by adidas? Every video i click i see a adidas shirt haha. Nice review thanks I order it now! love it so much!
LOL.
Aa that explains it! Haha keep up the amazing video's!!
Hi Teoh! I love to watch all your video as you always bring a lot information that I need.
I am not a professional, just a mommy that love to enjoy simple water coloring for relaxation :D
err ..
Thank you so much Theo .. it helps a lot!
Hi Tech, have you got a new microphone recently? :)
+William Marler I switched to a lavalier microphone recently. It's clipped to my t-shirt collar.
Senpaiii :3333 You are my passion..
Love your videos btw.
+My Panda Paints Thanks!
got 24 pans pro, viridian cant dissolve and flakes like wtf? prussian blue also doesnt dissolve wtf
These two colours are the classic problematic ones that are always difficult to dissolve
Really nice video. New suscriber :D!
Thanks for the support 😁

I came across someone pointing that Winsor & Newton is not a British company anymore.
+janeil arlegui I hope this is not one of those fake news
such a silly scetch!
Thx, I am going to start some painting with the cotman.
You will also love the cotman range I have professionally and cotman they are vibrant and gorgeous hope this helps you
i can only afford one watercolor set at the moment and i was wondering which would you recommend the most.. the wn cotman or the prima classics?
by the way i am a beginner trying to see if i would enjoy watercolors
